I'm Micah Phillips, Executive Vice President and Marketing Director for Nevada State Bank. And I'm joined with Megan Comfort, Executive Vice President and Head of Small Business Banking.
Megan, through the door was a concept that you came up with and something you've been championing for a long time. What is it that sparked your interest in creating this space? Well, I've been working with businesses almost exclusively throughout my entire career in banking. But not only that, I'm also married to a serial entrepreneur. My husband owns two companies, one that's been in business for well over 21 years and the other one that he started right before the COVID shutdown. So I have a unique vantage point because I'm a banker that helps so many different businesses and gets to hear their stories. But I also have a front row seat at home to the ups and downs of business ownership.
I myself have gotten done with my week as a banker and then on Saturdays have to work answering phones as a receptionist for my husband's business cuz someone called in sick. So I understand and have a little bit more compassion for business owners.
One thing that I've noticed throughout my years helping businesses is that there's this gap when it comes to business owners and decision makers having a space where they can share their own experiences. And those experiences will help cultivate ideas and problem solving for others that are facing similar challenges or looking to take on different opportunities. So expand on this thought. What is it that business owners will gain from this space? Well, we plan to bring business owners to the table to talk about their successes and failures. We call this podcast through the door because we are really going to dig into the details of businesses and we're gonna learn from them. This isn't a podcast about bankers and what we see. This is going to be about real business leaders that are talking about their experiences. So in some of the upcoming episodes, you're gonna be hearing from a business owner about cultivating a great culture that leads to retention and employee development and growth. Also efficiencies that really help improve their bottom line and help them grow their business. You'll hear from another business owner that is really leaning into the customer experience and how he's created great relationships with his customers that have kind of helped him become extremely networked and has allowed his business to continue growing and reach so many people throughout the areas that he serves.
What all of our guests have in common is that they're real life business leaders that are here in Nevada and they wanna share these experiences with our listeners. So who do you think would benefit then from listening in to this podcast? Well, I think that this podcast is going to be entertaining for anybody. That's my own bias opinion. But I do think it's gonna be more for business owners and decision makers that are interested in learning from others. That's one thing that I think is interesting is that everybody has advice and they always wanna give it. But generally, you don't really utilize that in the way that you need or you're not getting out of it what you need. And so this through experience sharing is going to help spark those ideas, I think. It's going to help come up with a refreshed new perspective on how to tackle something because you're gonna be hearing how others have done it in the past. And you're going to probably relate that back to your own set of issues or opportunities and you're going to figure out how you can address that. So what I'm hearing you say is you're really bringing business leaders to the table in a way that connects them almost like business networking. Exactly. So what we're going to do is bring the networking to you. One thing that I've also noticed working with so many businesses is that there's this finite resource that we just can't get enough of. And that's time, right? How do you as a business owner find the time to do everything that you need to do? To keep your business open and operating, to continue to capture all of the opportunities that you have, to continue dealing with all of the new challenges that are coming on the horizon as well as the challenges that you're already facing today. And you don't have enough time to really figure out how to gather all of that information to help you. And so this brings that information to you. It's going to allow you to tune in and listen and get information out of it that is really going to be beneficial for your company. And you're going to be able to do that from the luxury of wherever you are. I love it. So what should listeners expect from this space? Well, we plan to publish one episode a month and we're going to be focusing on Nevada-based businesses. So we invite our listeners to reach out to us to tell us what episodes they've liked, what topics they want us to cover. One thing that I think Nevada State Bank is always extremely focused on is how do we provide real value to the business community? And that's one of the things that I think this podcast should be. I like that.
And this is a pretty big undertaking, right, to put out a podcast like this, to bring in these business owners. So why did Nevada State Bank choose to take on a project like this? Because I begged you. True. That's probably the real answer. But being the head of small business, I have had the opportunity to travel throughout Nevada and get to talk to so many different businesses and hear so many amazing and inspiring stories.
And being a business bank and being around for over 60 years, we've really kind of cultivated so many avenues and opportunities to really help a lot of those businesses.
So this podcast is going to be a source of inspiration for business owners and leaders that are looking for solutions and information for their own business. And that's one of the things that I'm so thankful that we have the opportunity to do because we have all of this information and we have connections to so many different great companies and great business leaders in Nevada that not every single entrepreneur business owner has. And so by bringing them here and allowing them to share some of those experiences, I think is going to just reap benefits and create ripples throughout the business community that's going to help so many other businesses within our state. I love the idea of really connecting with businesses in the community and being able to hear from the experts. I myself am looking forward to listening in, learning from the best and the brightest.
And to our listeners, thank you for joining our special introductory episode of Through the Door. We hope that as you listen to the stories that are going to be shared here, you'll find inspiration and it will help open doors for your business. Thank you for joining us.
