What If One Man’s Obedience Saved Civilization
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
St. Patrick’s Day gets marketed like a drinking holiday, but the real Patrick is one of the most gripping figures in Christian history and his story is nothing like the stereotypes. We walk through the facts: a British teenager taken by Irish raiders, sold into slavery, and transformed by faith while tending sheep in isolation. Then comes the part most people never consider: after escaping, Patrick chooses to return to the land of his captivity, not for revenge or comfort, but because he believes God calls him to preach the gospel there.
From there, we separate legend from history. No, Patrick didn’t “drive snakes out of Ireland,” but he did confront a pagan power structure, endure real opposition, and leave behind rare first-person documents like the Confessio and his letter condemning violence and enslavement. We also explore the bigger historical “so what”: how the Irish Christian tradition and monasteries helped preserve manuscripts and learning after the fall of Rome, and why those downstream ripple effects still shape Western civilization, European history, and even ideas that later influenced the American founding.
After the history deep dive, we jump into Houston and Texas headlines: a quick weather update, a practical Telge Roofing conversation about roof lifespan, shingle quality, warranties, and how insurance policies can quietly shift from replacement cost to actual cash value. We also cover a Texas Supreme Court decision requiring PFLAG to produce documents sought by the Texas Attorney General in a dispute tied to SB 14 enforcement, highlight a VA Rep Range Day benefiting the veteran community, and discuss a Houston-area trade secrets case involving attempted data transfer to China, plus a final note on a Red River land dispute and Texas sovereignty.

Why Holidays Get Secularized
Patrick’s Childhood And Indifference
Kidnapped Into Slavery In Ireland
SPEAKER_18Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative brought to you by Textellant AC Service. And uh what a good morning it is. Not only is the temperature pretty nice, I mean, I guess it's a little cool this morning, though it'll be nice later in the day. But additionally, today is a holiday, obviously. Um if you were not aware, which big shocker, uh, it is St. Patrick's Day. And I know, I know, I know. Most people don't even view St. Patrick's Day really as a holiday. I mean, especially when it falls in the middle of the week. They're like, what are you gonna do? I guess it's become popularized with you know, green beer and shamrock shakes and drinking with your friends. And of course, any time that you you secular secularize a holiday, this happens. Obviously, Christmas, the whole the whole point of Christmas has gone to Santa Claus and gifts. Though at least there's still the resemblance, right? The gifts obviously uh came at least in theory from the Magi, the wise men who delivered gifts to Christ, though not at his birth. So it's a little mixed up, but it's okay. They at least still get the point. Um, and of course, Saint Nick was a real person who did a lot of good, by the way. And so I get it. Same with Easter, right? That's popularized and secularized with an Easter bunny and Easter eggs, um, which at least to a degree I guess are supposed to symbolize new life in springtime, which of course Christ rising from the tomb. And then you get to St. Patrick's Day, and it's like, let's uh let's celebrate this guy by wearing green, drinking, and and what have you. Big celebrations. And I think shockingly, a lot of people probably don't actually know the real history behind it. And you guys know that I'm a sucker for holidays. You guys know that I am a big fan of holidays in general, regardless of what they are, because I mean, of course, if they're like a bad pagan, disgusting holiday, uh, we'll probably stay away from those. But I don't believe Halloween is that. Before before I get the comments, well, well, you celebrate Halloween. Yeah, I don't think Halloween's actually pagan. I've ex- I explain that on Halloween, because I do shows on holidays. I quite enjoy doing shows on holidays. And St. Patrick's Day is actually one of those holidays that if you did not know is incredibly cool. Um obviously it's not, you know, breaking my favorites with Christmas, Fourth of July, Easter, but in terms of the story behind the holiday, it's actually quite an incredible story. And the impact that it had on history, the impact that St. Patrick had on history through God's providence was, if you don't know, rather unbelievable. And it's another story of where you can see, you know, the hand of God very, very clearly. Uh there are those sorts of stories where you hear them and and you can't you can't read them. I don't know how atheists do this. You can't really read them and walk away saying, Oh yeah, it was a mere happenstance. I mean, I mean, it just was bound to happen. No, this the stuff that happened throughout St. Patrick's life, if you don't, if you deny God and I mean not even deny God, you don't even be an atheist. You could just be a deist that believes in this far-off God that doesn't interact or doesn't engage in human events and human affairs. Even if you believe that, I think you'll have a hard time hearing this story and walking away still believing that if you read the history of St. Patrick. But of course, since it is St. Patrick's Day, hopefully you're all wearing green. And I want to I want to discuss just a bit what St. Patrick's Day is all about, who St. Patrick was, and so I'm gonna dedicate at least the first segment to that, though you know me with holidays, it might end up being a couple segments. Take a take a sweet break from the local news and the statewide news just for a couple segments. We had a couple interviews today as well. Uh it is Telgi Tuesday, so we're gonna have Telgee Roofing on at 7 o'clock. Uh, and then we're gonna talk about the uh VA Rep Veterans Association Real Estate, and uh we're gonna have them on for a few minutes, talking about an upcoming event at 7:30. Lots of lots of stuff going on today that you will not want to miss, but I want to kick it off talking about St. Patrick because it is a holiday, and here on this show we celebrate holidays, and we actually think that holiday celebrations are important and they're good. And so we'll kick it off. Uh, if your experience of this holiday has merely then has merely been something like the drinking and the green and people, you know, pinching each other and all that sort of stuff. I want to give you something very different this morning. Because the real history is is vastly different. The real Patrick, the historical Saint Patrick, the man behind the legend, his story is one of, I would argue, the most remarkable uh in in maybe the entire history of Christianity. Slavery, escape, all these sorts of themes coming together, the gospel, uh a divine calling, and a return to lands that that he for for most of us we would look at and say, how could you ever go back? And uh I I think it's it's a very good reminder, especially today, why I think holiday celebrations are so good if you know the history behind them. They're rather meaningless if you don't, why celebrating today is a good idea. And so let's talk about the real St. Patrick because he deserves better than a parade or a drink. Um, first, let's let's clear up the biggest misconception. Patrick was not Irish. I think that that's something that people just assume. So St. Patrick was an Irish guy. He was not, uh, by any stretch of the imagination. St. Patrick was actually British. Uh, he was born around 386 AD in Roman-occupied Britain into a Christian family with a little bit of standing, actually. He had uh, I don't want to say royalty, but fairly high status. Uh his father, uh Capernaus, was a deacon, his grandfather was a priest, so Christianity was was not foreign to his household. He would have grown up in it. Uh, but and this is very important for the story. By his own admission, in his own writing, Patrick didn't care about any of it growing up. Uh he he writes in his autobiography, which is his his confessio, as we'd call his confession, that in his youth he was rather indifferent to God. Uh he knew of God. Uh he even confesses to to sins that he committed when he was a child because he didn't see the importance of God or obeying the law of God. So we're not talking about this lifelong saint who always had it together and was just this great man. Yet again, as as it turns out, this happens all the time. We're talking about a young man who was living a comfortable life in a nice area in Roman Britain who had largely ignored the faith that he was raised in for many years. And uh when Patrick was sixteen years old, so still still I mean, I guess back then it wouldn't have been seen as a child, but still young, certainly. A band of Irish raiders attacked his family's estate in the Britain coast. They took him, along with some others, across the sea to Ireland, where he was sold into slavery. His master was a druid high priest, so pagan, named uh Milchu, I believe. Uh Patrick. His job as a slave was to tend sheep. And so he was outdoors, exposed to the elements all the time, away from people that he was raised with, away from the culture that he was raised in. And he was alone in the hills of Northern Ireland, a slave in a foreign foreign land, his home very far away, no expectation he'd ever return. And uh it was there in that loneliness, in that sort of rock bottom suffering, as many of us have experienced, that Patrick found God. That Patrick found the truth of the gospel. And he writes, I would pray as many as a hundred times in a day, and almost as many by night. The faith that it meant relatively nothing to him, that it just seemed like something he was raised in, something unimportant, came knocking on the doors of his heart when he was enslaved. Uh, he was not the same person who was taken as he was years later. And so he he writes that a voice, uh reportedly which he believed to be God, spoke to him and said, Your ship is ready. But he had no ship, he had no plan. Uh he walked, I think something like 200 miles across Ireland from his captivity in the north to the southern coast near Dublin. When he arrived, there was indeed a ship that was preparing to depart, interestingly enough. Shocking how that works. Uh the captain initially refused him passage, but Patrick prayed and he ended up on the ship. After a very harrowing journey, he made it back to Britain and he made it to his family, who begged him to go nowhere ever again. They said, You're never leaving home. This is this is where you're staying forever. But he was not done with Ireland because God was not done with Ireland. Uh he writes of a second time that he heard a voice, and uh he was he was basically given this letter. The the heading of the letter that he read said, The voice of the Irish. As he read it, he heard the people of Ireland calling out to him, We beg you to come home and walk once more among us. Patrick heard that call. And unlike the story of Jonah, where he ended up in a really big fish in the water, uh, he actually decided to listen to the calling of God. What Patrick did next, I think, is a a very good reminder for all of us of what we're called to do as Christians. He didn't just go back to Ireland on impulse. He spent more than 15 years in preparation for his trip. He traveled to Gaul, which is we'd call it France today, uh, where he studied under St. Germanus, a respected bishop. He was ordained as a deacon, and he was later ordained as a bishop. And so there's something I think worth noting here. Patrick was embarrassed about his education his whole life. He writes, I blush and fear exceedingly to reveal my lack of education. He was not a scholar. Uh he wrote in rough Latin. Historians describe his Latin as simple, awkward, laborious. He was not a polished writer who was well educated in these sorts of things. But God does not call him, did not call him, and does not call us based on our credentials. He called him because of what he was what God had called him to do. He called him because God uses often the weakest among us. He doesn't always call the strong, he calls the weakest among us to be strong through his grace. And so in 432 AD, many, many years ago, Patrick returned to Ireland, not as a slave, but as a missionary sent to bring the gospel to a nation that was still, at that time, largely pagan in culture and in nature. And so he went to the barbarians. I mean, he didn't just go to established parts of Ireland. Uh, he went beyond the edges of at that time what would have been Roman civilization. Any cultural norms he would have known, he abandoned them. He he was far outside of that realm. And so he went to a land the empire had never conquered, had never largely even seen. And in a people uh to people that at the time would have been considered beyond reach. In the modern day, with all the exploration that we've done, we have full maps, right? This was this was a very long time ago. This would have been an area that people in in Roman civilization, what they would have known, they never would have gone. They didn't even know what lied there. What that would have looked like. And so um he knew the Irish, of course, by nature of having been a slave. He knew their language from years of captivity, he knew their culture, their beliefs, their fears. Because he had been under a druid druid high priest, he knew the druid worldview. And rather than bulldozing it, he engaged it. He faced, by the way, very real opposition when he went. The Druids, which of course were the both spiritual and legal authorities over Ireland at the time, saw him as a direct threat to their way of life. And so he paid protection money to local kings to keep his missionary team safe as they traveled across the island. And he was one guy. I mean, this was not a large, large team, he was one guy in charge of this whole thing in hostile territory, carrying a message that the people of Ireland largely did not want to hear. But he did it anyway. And so thousands, because of St. Patrick, came to faith. Churches were founded, bishops were established in regions across Ireland. He founded a church in Armagh, which became the ecclesiastical capital of Irish Christianity. He codified laws that championed the rights of women, the poor, and slaves, uh, the same class of people that he had once been in when he was in Ireland as a young man. And by the end of his ministry, Ireland had been completely transformed. And let me, I think, tell you one story from St. Patrick's life that kind of highlights that character. About 15 years of ministry in Ireland, a chieftain named Carodocus, uh, who Patrick had converted to Christianity, raided a group of newly baptized Christians and either killed them or sold them into slavery. And of course, Patrick was furious. He wrote a letter, his letter to the soldiers of Charodocus, that excommunicus and told his soldiers they were no longer bound to obey his commands because those commands were incompatible with the teaching of Christ on the dignity of human life. He said, disobey your leader, because he's calling you to do things that are evil and that are wrong. Which, by the way, was not a very safe letter to write. Let me remind you, Croodicus was a powerful man who certainly could have had Patrick killed for what he did. But Patrick did not wait, he did not flinch in the face of that. Instead, again, he was not a powerful man by any worldly standard that we'd set up for what we consider powerful in in any position of authority. He had no army, he had no technical political office, he had no wealth in Ireland. What he had was the conviction that human beings were made in the image of God and deserved to be treated accordingly. And he put his life behind that conviction, even in moments where, for most of us, we'd look at that and say how terrifying that was. But for Patrick, it wasn't about being terrified or being fearful. It was about doing what God had called him to do. It was about doing the things that despite the opposition, despite the fear I'm certain that that most men would have in his position, St. Patrick said, Yeah, it doesn't matter. Because God has called me to a mission greater than myself. And regardless of the outcome of whatever happens to me, whatever happens to what I'm doing, if God calls us to do if God calls us to do something and it's in his will, then who are we to say no? Who are we to look at that and say, no, but I'm scared? No, but I I don't want to risk it. No, but I I think that's dangerous, right? Who are we to do that? And if you want an answer to that question, right? If you want an answer to the rest of the story of St. Patrick and actually the importance of all of this, where this kind of went after this moment, you'll have to stick around because we're going to the break. After the break, we're going to come back, we're going to talk about some of the truth. Of course, there's legends, um, talk a little bit about St. Patrick, and then I want to do some, it's kind of speculation on, you know, the whole what would have happened if he hadn't gone. But I actually think it's quite fun in this case to see the impact ultimately uh that that St. Patrick had long term on Christianity in the West. So we'll talk about all that when we come back from the break. If you'd like to text in, let us know your thoughts. Wish me a happy St. Patrick's Day. All that's on the table. Escape And The Call To Return
Mission Strategy And Druid Opposition
A Letter Against Enslaving Christians
Debunking Snakes And Other Legends
Irish Monasteries Preserve Civilization
The Ripple Effects Of Obedience
SPEAKER_18Now, let's address some of the misconceptions, the legends that I think take away from the story, because they they add things that just aren't true. First of all, one of the big things is that that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. I don't actually know where that came from, but that did not happen because Ireland never had snakes. The Roman geographer Salinius documented that in the third century, before Patrick was even born, the snakes are almost certainly a metaphor, apparently, for paganism and for evil. It was this symbolic language rooted in the biblical tradition, going back to the Garden of Eden. And so Patrick drove something out of Ireland, what was what the snake was symbolizing, but it was not reptilian creatures, right? It was it was not actual snakes. What is very real about the story of St. Patrick, undeniably real, is his slavery, his escape and his visions, his return, his timeless and tireless mission, his courage, his humil his hum his humility, really, and and I would add his own autobiography, his confessio, his confession, his own words in his own voice, that is still, by the way, available for anyone to read about the life of St. Patrick. The real Patrick, I think, is far more compelling than any legend that's been concocted about him. Um and so I want to leave you, uh as you kind of wrap up here with two things. One, his own words on things, and then a sort of speculatory hypothetical as to how important St. Patrick was to Christianity in the West in general, in Europe in general. Unlike most ancient saints, uh St. Patrick actually left us his confessio and his. Letter uh to Corodocus, that are the two writings we have that are verified as his, and they are what I would I would I would wager that they are some of the most extraordinary documents from the early church. Uh on his calling, he wrote, I am Patrick, a sinner, the most unlearned of men, the least of all the faithful, and utterly despised by many. That was his own self-description. And that's that's how he introduced himself, by the way, in his writings. A man chosen by God, who never throughout his life forgot who he was apart from the grace of God. He still saw himself in his humility as this man who didn't have the education of other men, who didn't have the talents and and the things that you'd expect that you'd need to perform such a great task. No, no, no. He was he was a normal guy. A lot of people didn't like him. He didn't see himself as particularly smart or intelligent. Instead, he saw a sinner who deserved none of what God gave him, and yet God gave it to him anyway. And so on his mission, he also wrote, quote, I must cry out aloud and so also render something back to the Lord for his great benefits here and in eternity, benefits which the mind of man is unable to appraise. And perhaps one of the most powerful quotes on why he returned back to the people who had once enslaved him. Because you have to remember that's a big part of the story. Yes, because of slavery, he had the traditions, the culture, the religious knowledge, and the language of the Irish, but he chose to go back to a place that the only thing he'd ever known about it was being in captivity and being forced into this force. And he wrote, I came to the Irish people to preach the gospel and to suffer insult from the unbelievers, bearing the reproach of my going abroad and many persecutions, even unto bonds, and I give up my free condition for the benefit of others. So he he what he thought was knowingly giving up his own freedom to go back to the land of his slavery to sort of the very people who had enslaved him. And that's that's not a holiday, right? It is, but it it it has to be a reminder to us that that's a real person who dedicated his life to a calling that he thought would inevitably result in a huge giving up of his freedom. At bare minimum, giving up of his life, giving up of his home, his culture, his friends, his family, uh, to do what God had called him to do. Now, one of the things that I do want to talk about just for a moment, because it it is it is quite interesting. The Roman Empire, of course, as we all know, collapsed in about 476 AD, just a few decades after Patrick's mission concluded. When Rome fell, it didn't just lose political power. It also lost a lot of the infrastructure that at the time would have carried Christianity across Europe. All of the roads, the institutions, uh, the libraries, any of the stuff you think of associated with Christianity in Europe, all of that information, uh, the faith that spread along the Roman roads, which I'm sure you've heard of, well, those roads were, of course, crumbling. And so what Patrick had done almost accidentally, uh and I'll say accidentally because it wasn't by his own strength or his own knowledge of what he was doing, but of course we can now see hindsight's 2020, the providence of God on display was plant Christianity in a place that the Roman Empire had not touched. And so when Rome fell, didn't really have too much of an impact on these outskirts of Ireland, uh, because Ireland was outside of the Roman Empire's control entirely. And so when the lights went out on what is much of Europe, because of where where Rome was, Ireland did not go dark because Ireland had never been dependent on Roman infrastructure to begin with. The faith in a lot of these parts of Ireland was we'll call it self-sustaining, because they weren't reliant and dependent on Roman infrastructure because they didn't have it anyways. Which matters enormously, by the way, uh, for the rest of the story, because uh and by the way, Thomas Cahill uh wrote a book on this called How the Irish Saved Civilization. And of course, while the title seems dramatic, uh, the thesis of that book is actually pretty incredible. Uh, after Rome's collapse, the monasteries that Patrick's mission gave birth to became the preservation vaults, essentially, of Western knowledge in general. Irish monks copied manuscripts, not just scripture, though it was also scripture, uh, but classic literature, philosophy, history, people like uh Virgil, Cicero, Jerome, Augustine, works that existed nowhere else, by the way, in surviving copies, were sitting in Irish monasteries while continental Europe was being overrun by successive waves of invasion, of course, from barbarian invaders, among others. And those same Irish monks went back to Europe. Uh, that would be Columba, Columbanus, Gaul, Killian, monk after monk who were trained in the Irish Christian tradition, who crossed back into the continent in the sixth and seventh centuries, hundreds of years later, and re-evangelized large portions of what, again, is now France. Uh, without the manuscripts, without the access to that information, without the Irish monasteries, and without the people coming from those monasteries, the intellectual foundation of Western civilization, uh the synthesis of Greek philosophy, Christian theology may never have existed in the first place to bring back. If you had not had an established faith outside of Roman control, then when Rome fell, there would have been no final copies of all this information. Not that God, of course, couldn't have done a great thing from that, uh, but but we can see how important that was to maintaining historical Christianity throughout the entirety of Europe. I mean, we could, again, be talking about a Europe that never recovered its intellectual heritage after Rome fell. And so here's here's where if you again, if you're if you're going with me through this speculative hypothetical, this is where it kind of gets, I'll say shocking, staggering, whatever word you want to use. Every major movement that we know of today in Western, uh we'll say Western intellectual and political history is downstream of the medieval church, uh, including the movements that rebelled against the church. For example, in order to have a Protestant Reformation, you needed to have something to reform, right? You needed to have an established Roman Catholic Church. And so the Enlightenment's concept of individual conscience was a secularized version of the Reformation's concept of individual conscience before God. I mean, even the American founding's framework of natural rights was built on centuries of natural law theory developed in the monasteries of Ireland. And so if you remove St. Patrick, if he had never gone and established those things, you've potentially pulled on the thread that just completely undoes the whole outfit. And so think about it from like a geographical standpoint, maybe a political standpoint. Islam, of course, as we all remember the Crusades, emerged in the 7th century and expanded rapidly across both the Middle East and North Africa. Regions that before that had been largely Christian. It reached Spain in the early 8th century and was only stopped in 732 by Charles Martel. The stopping force, by the way, that stopped the Islamic invaders that first time was a Frankish Christian kingdom, one whose Christianity had been, we'll say, substantially shifted, renewed, by, by the way, Irish missionaries about a hundred years before that. Irish missionaries come in and said, do not lose faith. Here's the truth of the gospel, renew your dedication to Christ. Only a hundred years before that point. And so again, you see the impact of Irish missionaries who, again, were downstream of what St. Patrick did in Ireland, who are the reason that you even had a strong Christian kingdom to stand up against the Islamic hordes in the eighth century. And so a Europe without the re-energized Christianity in the sixth and seventh centuries may be a Europe today without any of the cultural and institutional resistance that would have been able to stop the expansion of Muslims. We could be looking at a fully Islamiszed Europe by the ninth century had they not been stopped by people dedicated to Christianity and to stopping evil. And from there, no crusades, uh no Renaissance, no Reformation, no Enlightenment, and of course, by extension, no United States of America for sure. And so here's the thing I think that makes this more than just speculation. Uh Patrick didn't understand any of this. And I want to highlight that again because he was not, he was not playing some sort of 4D, 5D chess, right, as we often say. He was a man who, again, had been enslaved, who heard a calling from God, and then went back. He was motivated by the love for the people that had wronged him, for the benefit of others, for the sacrifice that God had called him to, and that that's it. He had no idea that the downstream effects of what he was doing would end up preserving all of the intellectual inheritance of what we now know as Western civilization. He had no idea that his converts would re-evangelize a collapsing continent, that the Roman Empire would fall, and the only thing that re-enterized Christianity in Europe were Irish missionaries. He had no idea that the monasteries that, of course, would be built in his wake would be ultimately these libraries that would contain all of the knowledge and keep it alive through the Middle Ages. He just went back to Ireland because God told him to. And I think that act of obedience, it's one man with one distinct calling and one journey there, uh, may be one of the most consequential decisions in the history of Western civilization that we have all seemingly forgotten. I think that's what makes St. Patrick's Day more than pinching someone for the color of a tire that they're wearing. And I think it's a very good reminder to us, by the way, because I think we still today, and the men have struggled with this for much of world history. I mean, you can look back at Moses, even, you can go back very, very long time ago. And Moses had the same issue. He was like not a learned man. He's like, I can't speak well, I'm terrified of public speaking, right? All these sorts of things. And yet God said, Doesn't matter, I'm calling you. You you have a job to do, so let's let's get on it. And St. Patrick is a very similar story, one where he considered himself not very bright. He didn't consider himself special by any extraordinary means. The only thing that separated him from anyone else was that God had specifically called him to do something in Ireland. And rather than make excuses for why he couldn't, rather than come up with reasons, logical reasons, that would have it would have been fair for why he should not go. Instead, no, he said, God's called me to do this, and so I have a moral and theological obligation to obey my God. The God that, by the way, he found because of the suffering he was in. What a testament that is to us, by the way. I mean, every single day we're reminded of how fierce a fight we have ahead of us, the opposition and persecution that we will likely face. I mean, if you've been in the space for anytime at all, you you know about uh Charlie Kirk, you know about the threats that most people on this side of the aisle get. I don't want to say on a daily basis, but at least relatively often, death threats, threats of fighting and what have you. And you know a lot of the dangers associated with being on the right, with being a Christian and a conservative in modern day America, and not just a squishy evangelical Christian that sometimes wants to, you know, go to church for a holiday, but somebody that actually worships God and allows God to inform your worldview and the way that you believe about politics. If you're one of those people, you know a lot of the dangers associated with that. You know that that's not just an easy little task you just do. It requires a lot of intent. And if you're not being driven by the grace of God to do that, you're going to give up. It's not something that you just pick up and you just do. Something that's just easy to be done. It's something that requires a lot of dedication. It requires strength that I would argue we don't have apart from the grace of God, that we don't have apart from Christ, strength that we're given through the Holy Spirit to continue doing what God has called us to do. And I think we all need that reminder in in America today because so many people just give up. So many people. And and here's again, the highlight for me, one of the highlights, is this sort of comparison between the ultimate effect that St. Patrick had on the world and the impact that St. Patrick thought he would have on the world. Because, again, and I said hindsight's 2020, this is how you see it. St. Patrick only saw himself as a missionary to Ireland. That's it. That's that was his whole goal I want to be God has called me to be a missionary, to spread the gospel, the Great Commission, to go and baptize people, to convert them to Christianity through that God would use me to do that, to call people to his word and and to Christ. That's that's all I can do. He never ever imagined that the outcome of his life would one day largely end up being the preservation of Western civilization, that all of what we know today as Christian history possibly only exists because one man had a calling from God and went to the coast of Ireland to preach the gospel to pagans who, again, he thought would probably end up enslaving him again. He went back saying, I'm gonna write a letter to a very powerful, wealthy man who could order me to be killed, and I'm not gonna hesitate doing that because I I have to I have to tell his man, you can't do this. You can't kidnap and and and and murder Christians. You can't do that. That's evil. And you're all believers, I've talked to you. Your leader is telling you to do things that uh are not compliant with the word of God, so you must disobey the worldly authority. You don't just get to do that whenever you want, but when it's causing you to sin, you you are certainly allowed and are certainly obligated to do so. And they did. And and that sort of stuff right there is what makes a legend. Not a person who is playing the sort of political game that I think a lot of people get caught up in. And this is part of the funny thing of it, because how many people have you heard who have said, I just don't think I can have an impact? How many times have you heard that? I just don't think I'm gonna make all that much of a difference. I I've been there, by the way. Uh before I was on on the air, before I had any sort of position, I suppose. You know, I was knocking doors. That was that was my job, planning events for people to come out to, learn about property tax reform. I remember them well. And I know there were days that I struggled. I said, I'm not, I'm not making much of a difference at all. Um I I maybe changed a couple minds here and there, knocking on some of these doors uh for politicians. Maybe I've convinced a couple people over time of some things they didn't formerly believe. But I I'm one guy. I'm not gonna I'm not gonna make much of a difference. And then of course, the same way, hindsight's 2020. Had I not decided to keep knocking doors anyways, I never would have met the guy uh that wanted to start a podcast. If I had not met him, I never would have rented podcast space from a guy that owned a radio station. I never would have been hired as a social media manager for a radio station or an on-air talent for that radio station. I wouldn't have a show. I wouldn't be able to talk about what we're talking about today. Had I said, oh, but uh can I really have an impact? I I can't do anything knocking doors. Maybe not. Maybe I maybe I did, maybe I didn't, but God does not think the same way that we do. Praise the Lord for that. Uh God has plans that are so much more broad than we could possibly imagine for our own lives. And really, the question of can we have an impact is not one of logic. It's not one purely of intellectual thought predictions on, you know, how much of an impact will I have each day doing this, that, or the other. Rather, it's it's a question of faith. Do you believe that God has called you to do these things? If the answer to that question is yes, you have zero right, and it's also pretty dumb, pretty foolish to question God's will for your life. Because, again, God's plans are not only greater than yours, but by any metric, any metric at all, of intelligence, of the ability to know what's going to happen, to have a plan for your life and for the lives of everyone who knows the hairs on your head more than you do, certainly, to question God. And St. Patrick's Day is a really good day to be reminded of the calling that we all have as Christians to spread the gospel, to preach the truth, and to do it, by the way, unapologetically and unafraid of the consequences. To say, look, if it means writing a letter to those in authority who are doing evil things, then I'll do it. It means going and calling your congressmen because they're they're promoting something evil, then do it. If it means uh speaking out at an LGBT pride event, speaking out at your school board meeting when they're trying to indoctrinate your kids, right? Austin ISD, we talked a couple days ago about Austin ISD hosting this LGBT Pride Week where they're not being transparent and they're not telling people, it means showing up and saying you can't do that in whatever impact you may have, that you, again, don't know. You have no idea what impact you're going to have. You you you cannot see the future. You're not you're not a prophet, right? God has not given you some sort of saw on, all-seeing eye where you know what is going to come out of your own actions. You don't. All you know is that God has called you to be faithful to his commands. That's it. That's all we have to go on. And when he calls us to do things, when he puts us in a time and a place with a specific calling, a distinct goal, who are we as believers to say no to that? Because you have you have two options, really. And you can compare and contrast these two men. You have Jonah and you have St. Patrick. Both are very important stories, and both tell you something a little bit about how God works. Because in the case of Jonah, you have a man who was called by God and essentially said, No, I I don't want to do that. I I I don't want to go there. I don't want to deal with the people of Nineveh. They're they're evil, they're backbiting, they're they're frauds, they're gross, they're degenerate. I I I'm not going there. Even when God called him. And then you have St. Patrick, of course, who looked at the people of Ireland and said, ah, they're pagan. They're evil, they're they're enslavers, they're they're murderers, they're thieves. And he looked at all of that and said, Okay, if you send me, I'll go. And indeed, God sent him. And by the way, that is true of every single one of us. I know that again, it gets easy, especially with social media and seeing the impact that some people may be having, this, that, or the other. It gets easy to find excuses for why we won't have that big of an impact. And so why ultimately the things we do don't really matter, so why do anything at all? I I I certainly understand that. I've been there. And I had to eat crow to look back and see what God was doing in my life for the impact that God ultimately had planned for my life. To be able to talk about the things I'm talking about today. I mean, how many opportunities does someone get to preach the gospel on a political radio show? How many opportunities do we have in modern day America in a large city to preach the good news, to talk about the Christian history of St. Patrick's Day, the impact of the Irish church on Western civilization, ultimately on America, on our founding, on the possibility of that ever even happening, coming from Spain, and then of course from uh from Britain, from the Dutch, that never none of that ever would have been possible had a man not answered the calling that God had set out before him, had it not been for the providence and the sovereignty of God in our lives. And that's not different today. It it wasn't like St. Patrick was called, and now today God's just kind of like hands off, you got it, don't worry about it. No. And that's by the way, why I'm not people are like, aren't you worried about what's going on here? And aren't you freaked out? No, I'm I'm not. Yes, I'm gonna hold my government officials accountable. Yes, when when men are dying overseas, and I think it's not for a good cause, we can have a conversation about that. And we can call out our elected leaders who are doing evil things for sure. That should not be a problem. In fact, we're called, by the way, to do that. But let's be clear, God is still very much sovereign. That's not changed. God's providence is still on full display here in the United States and all across the world, and I am not going to be the broken link in a chain of Christian heritage that says, but but God's not around today. Oh, but but I'm scared. Oh, but somebody was assassinated like six months ago for their faith. I I don't want that to be me. I want to I want what uh whatever that looks like, I want to be whoever God calls me to be. If that means giving up my life for this, so be it. If that means that I go my whole life, because again, remember, we have the benefit of looking back at history. Saint Patrick never saw the fruition like this. Of course, he saw Christian churches that he was planting, but he had no idea what would come of that. He didn't know that. That one day they would be the bearers of of truth, largely re-giving that back to Europe after the fall of Rome. He had no clue. And so if God decides to use me to help build a foundation in Houston, and I don't see the results of that until and the results of that don't come until after I'm gone, so be it. Because God has called me to do this show. God has called me to do it well. God has called me to use my platform that I have here to preach the gospel, to preach the truth, unapologetically, unafraid. And I promise you, He's given you a calling as well. If you're a believer, he has called you to great and mighty things. Regardless of your credentials, regardless of the strength that you think you possess, regardless of your position or what you see as your position in the world, God has called you to great and mighty things. And St. Patrick's Day should be a reminder of who are you to say no. So happy St. Patrick's Day. We'll be back from the break for the last segment here of the first hour. SPEAKER_18Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. Before we jump into the weather, real quickly we've got a text in it says, Good morning, Michael. I just want to say thank you for the history on St. Patrick. It's something I never knew. Have a blessed day, my friend. Yeah, and I uh a lot of people don't know. I mean, St. Patrick is one of those holidays that has been so secularized and commercialized that most people probably don't know. Which is why I thought it was especially important to cover it here on the on the show. Because St. Patrick was actually an incredible story. Uh one of the coolest that we have, especially because we have an autobiography, which is rare for a lot of the early church. And we can see the direct effects of what Irish missionaries ended up doing and Irish monasteries ended up doing across the West. And so we have a very clear picture as to why we celebrate St. Patrick's Day, why it became commercialized, why it's such a big day. Nevertheless, Houston area residents are getting a reminder or should be, that uh winter is not quite over as temperatures or points of surge toward uh record heat by the weekend. Uh we have clearing skies, light winds, and dry air overnight, which created ideal conditions for radiational cooling, allowing the day's heat to escape quickly into the atmosphere overnight. That process allowed temperatures to drop sharply before sunrise today. Pre-dawn temperatures fell into the 30s, dropping to the upper twenties, by the way, from the Brazil Valley into the piney woods, while coastal areas stayed mostly in the forties. A brief freeze, North Houston, is now in memory as temperatures begin their climb. Uh, after afternoon temps struggled to climb above 55 degrees yesterday, temperatures will reach the sixties this afternoon, still again, nearly 10 degrees below normal for this time of year. That chill is very short-lived. Uh strengthening upper-level ridge bat high atmospheric pressure building across the southwestern United States is going to quickly send temperatures climbing through the middle of the week. Afternoon temps should rebound into the 70s by tomorrow. By Friday, which also happens to be the spring equinox, temperatures could reach the middle to upper eighties across Southeast Texas. The warmth may peak over the weekend, temperatures a few thousand feet above the ground are forecast to climb to unusually high levels. Combined with dry air and southwest winds, that setup favors significant warming. That means Houston could approach or even reach ninety degrees by Saturday, potentially breaking a daily record that has stood for nearly 120 years by about three degrees. For perspective, Houston typically doesn't record its first 90 degree day until around Memorial Day. However, we did hit uh 90 degrees in mid-March last year. But again, it's just changes in the weather. I mean, obviously it's not just global warming because it is very cold today. It was a high of 55 degrees yesterday. So it's just you just never know. It's unpredictable. And it doesn't mean that the world is dying. It just means that that's the way the weather works. With that being said, as I promised earlier, when we get back from the break at the top of the next hour, we're gonna have on Telgee Roofing for Telgee Tuesday. We're gonna have Josh Heyman come on talking about all about Telgee Roofing, the importance to the community, and the kind of work they do, all that coming up in the next segment. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. Don't go anywhere because we will be right back with that interview after the break, and you will not want to miss it. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. Stick around, and we'll talk soon.
SPEAKER_10From deep in the heart of Texas, Coach Houston's God-loving patriot, the voice of reason. This is the Lone Star Conservative, Michael Wilson.
SPEAKER_18Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative brought to you by Textellant AC Service. It's Tuesday. You know what that means? It is Telgi Tuesday here on Patriot Talk 920. Each Tuesday, we're checking in with the folks over at Telgey Roofing, Houston's go-to name when your roof needs attention. And I've got Josh Heyman on the line with me right now. Uh Josh is a senior project manager over at Telgi Roofing. Josh, good morning and welcome to the show.
SPEAKER_09Good morning. Thank you for having me. I'm looking forward to having a conversation with you.
SPEAKER_18I am as well, and I want to kick it off, by the way, talking specifically about you guys' history here in Houston. I think this already just speaks volumes about your company and about the way you operate. Before we even get into reviews or the way you actually do business, any of that stuff, I want to kick it off talking about how you've been in business for 17 years. Now, just as a little background for our listeners, in the roofing world, that is nothing short of remarkable. Uh, I've heard that most roofing companies fold within two or three years of opening their doors. So what does 17 years say, not only about the future of the company, but about how you guys operate? That's the kind of grownness.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, I mean that's that's a fantastic point. Uh ultimately, most as you said, most roofing companies fail pretty early on. It's it's a very tough business. Uh Telgi has been around since 2009. We've we've got over 65,000 customers that we've done roofs for. Uh and ultimately it's just our consistency and the quality of work that we do. Uh we we are out there providing a higher level of service uh than than any other roofer in the in the industry. Um it's just it goes with the Telgi name, and and when people do go to those reviews and look us up, uh they they can see that in the work that uh our customers are acknowledging.
SPEAKER_18Right. And I'm a big analogy guy. I I love analogies. I think they they paint the picture for a lot of people. Imagine you had a spot, ladies and gentlemen, where a burger restaurant consistently would open up and within about a year, two years, it would just close down. It was just they would argue it was terrible location, or it was this problem, or there was that problem. And then one day, if a burger restaurant pop up, it's been around for almost 20 years, you're probably just first random assumption is going to be that they probably make a pretty mean burger, right? It is probably the first assumption because the location didn't change, people didn't change, but they provide something better that's keeping them in business. I think this is a very, very similar point here where you guys are in an industry that has I I think been uh severely charged with people trying to come in, get in the business, and it just doesn't last. It doesn't work long term. And so to have a business that's lasted so far 17 years, Lord willing at least another 17 bare minimum, um, you guys I think are showcasing the kind of business you provide. And so I want to know about the product itself, because obviously that's where a lot of this comes in. Uh not all shingles, I think it's fair to say, are created equal. Um Telgi Roofing is known only for using the best shingles on the market. Can you tell me about the specifics of what that means and why that matters?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, absolutely. Uh it it truly does matter. I'm a I'm a former home inspector, I'm a current licensed insurance adjuster. I've traveled the country looking at roofs. Uh it's it's been what my career has been around. Every every shingle uh you know works well in a in a different market. And with our local Houston climate, uh with the high winds, with the massively high temperatures, uh, we we decided to use this as the GAF uh shingle line. GAF's been around the longest, they've been around since the late 1800s. Uh they've got the best warranties in the industry. Uh, you know, with with that being said, Telge Roofing uh is one of GAF's three-star gold club presidential members. There's only 14 in the entire state of Texas. Uh there's only about a hundred in the entire United States. And so when one of our customers comes and does business with us, that gives them peace of mind that they not only are using the best material on the market, but they're doing it with one of, if not the best, roofing companies in the entire United States, not just Texas, not just Harris County. So that gives our homeowners just a tremendous peace of mind because they have not only the backing of Toggy roofing, but we get the opportunity to have that backing of GAF.
SPEAKER_18Right. And we're gonna get into that here in a moment. Before we go over there, I do want to also bring up you guys' warranty. If you're gonna have a quality product, I think it's also fair to have a quality warranty to accompany it. Can you walk me through what your warranty looks like? I think most homeowners don't realize how important that is because it's not just the moment that the roof gets put on, but they want to make sure that they're protected moving forward as well. What does you what does you guys' warranty look like?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, absolutely. Uh we we offer uh a variety of warranties. We have a five-year no-leak labor warranty uh that can certainly be optional for upgrades depending on that homeowner's uh personal needs to either a 10 or even a 25-year no-leak labor warranty. Uh they also will come with a 25-year stain guard protection warranty, meaning you're not you shouldn't have any algae or mold or any discoloration to that roof for for 25 years as well. Uh and then we couple that with with GAF stacking of their manufacturer warranty with a 50-year manufacturer warranty that is transferable for that homeowner within the first 20 years. So if they were to sell or move or you know, do any of those type of things, they can transfer that and that gives them peace of mind as a selling point when they sell their you know largest investment that they've got.
SPEAKER_18Right. And I think also with that, I want to pivot over for a moment because in today's world, um, especially with have heavy access to the internet, I think people, when they're vetting a company, one of the first things they do is they pull up the reviews. They want to know what other people thought. They just they don't just want the promises from the company, though that matters. They want to hear what real people had an experience with. And so Telgiroofy, Tel Gee Roofing, you guys have a ton of reviews, strong Google reviews from real people with real experiences. And of course, that results in a ton of five-star reviews all over all over Google. You can see it just by Googling tech Telgi Roofing. Can you tell everyone? I I guess this is kind of a big, big, kind of filled question, but what do you think it is about how you guys treat the customers that keeps generating that kind of feedback consistently?
SPEAKER_09You know, uh ultimately that was one of the things that's impressive to me is uh I I shared a second ago, I was an insurance adjuster for a long time, and uh I constantly was running into customers that that had were asking me, you know, who who I could recommend, and and I couldn't do that uh, you know, unless I gave multiple names out there. But uh, you know, Telge Roofing, when you go to Google and you you can see that we've got over 634 reviews. Uh I believe about 620 of those are five-star. We've got a I believe a 4.8 or 4.9 rating across Google. But one of the things that's impressive is uh, you know, when we go out and we meet our customers, we can give them a folder and we give them a reference page. We're so confident in our work. We have so many of our customers that want to tell everybody about how great their experience was. So we don't have anything to hide. We're completely transparent and we want our customers to to talk to anybody else that's worked with us because we're confident in what our previous customers will tell our new new new customers about us.
SPEAKER_18Right. And I want to remind everybody, ladies and gentlemen, if you're just now tuning in, we have Josh Heyman here from Telgee Roofing on Patriot Talk920 for Telgi Tuesday. And the next thing we're gonna jump into here, because you mentioned the GAF President's Club three-star gold status. Uh, that sounds like a tagline to a lot of people that may not know about the roofing industry, but I want our listeners to hear this. I want to explain what that really means from you because I I don't think people realize how exclusive that designation is. I'm hearing that that's something like you mentioned how many there are in the entirety of North America, but I think it's something like two percent of all roofing companies have that designation. Out of tens of thousands of them, um, you're in the top two percent. And so I I want to highlight again how important that is, not just to peace of mind, but for people to know the kind of quality they're getting when they go to Telgi.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, absolutely. Uh I mean, as I said a little bit ago, there's there's over 6,500 roofing contractors just in Harris County alone. Uh we're we're one of 14 that has that three-star presidential member um status with the whole state of Texas. So when you when you narrow it down even further, uh we're we're in the elite, even probably less than 1% when it comes to Harris County uh roofers. Uh so it gives the homeowner just a lot of peace of mind uh because when a company like Telly Roofing is involved, if and when there's ever an issue with the roof, with the warranties or any of those things, you have the backing. When we pick up the phone, GAF wants to take care of us because we do a great job of representing them and their products. Uh so it gives the homeowner just uh a tremendous amount of comfortability and peace of mind knowing that they've got uh such such tremendous backing from both from from two very well-known companies.
SPEAKER_18Right. I also want to talk about something that I know is affecting a lot of Houston homeowners right now, and that's insurance. Uh the lands the insurance landscape in general is shifting. A lot of people are finding their policies aren't covering what they think they used to cover. Uh some are moving from full replacement coverage to partial coverage. What should people be doing right now in terms of reviewing their policy, knowing what's on the table, and working with you guys to make sure that they are protected?
Warranties, Reviews, And GAF Status
SPEAKER_09Yeah, that's great. Uh, you know, as consumers, we we we fall into the trap that we just don't quite understand how we're insured, whether we're underinsured, overinsured, if we even have insurance to have any specific coverages. Uh it's very important every time your policy rolls around to review that and get with your agent and truly understand the language of your policy. Uh the laws changed back in 2023, uh, where insurance companies can convert your policy from full replacement cost value, meaning you have full coverage on your roof minus your responsibility, which would be your deductible, to something called an actual cash value policy. Uh and what that means is you don't have full coverage. You you typically would have 50% coverage or less. And so unfortunately, you you can run into it where if you have uh a roof that's in that, you know, 15 plus year age range, where you actually don't have any coverage. You've got higher premiums and you're not going to have any particular coverage from your insurance company. So it's it's it's incredibly important to you and your home to have that stuff looked at and and potentially even get ahead of it. Uh so if you've got a roof in that age range of of even eight to 15 years, it's important to one, check with your insurance agent, but two, give Toggy roofing a call because people like myself that are insurance adjusters, we we guide our customers through it uh and and we get in the depths of the policy and and we explain what their current situation is and we try to get ahead of it. Uh, I had one particular customer that uh they had been with the same insurance company a very long time. They were paying premiums of about$9,700 a year for a typical three-bedroom, two-bath house. Uh, after we did their roof and we put up a GAF Timberline HDZ that's a class three hail impact rated with the infinite wind rating and all the things. We I I worked with them and and kind of educated them on what their situation was. And uh they went out and shopped and they found new homeowner insurance premiums for$2,800. This was an elderly this was an elderly couple, so they were on a fixed budget. So they went from insurance premiums of$9,700 a year to$2,800 a year, almost a$7,000 a year savings for uh for a for a family that's on a fixed income. Uh it was massive, and they constantly were were thanking me because I mean, you know, if i I don't know about everybody else, but I'd be more than happy to put about another five to six hundred dollars in my pocket every single month.
SPEAKER_18Yeah, I think I think most of us are uh probably on that list. One other thing that I want to put on people's radar, you mentioned eight to fifteen years. That's actually a a window that matters a lot for homeowners. Can you break down the eight to fifteen year window for us? What happens to a roof? Why is that window so important?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, absolutely. Uh so you know, when it comes to roofing materials, everybody gets fixated on, hey, I've got a 20-year roof, I've got a 30-year roof, any of those things. The the roofing industry doesn't really go off of those numbers anymore. Uh, you know, it we live in a very uh difficult climate. The the heat truly is uh is something that breaks our roofs down quite quickly. Uh, you know, along with the humidity, and we get hail and we get tornadoes and we get hurricanes and all the other things. These are all things that can break down a roof. Uh and so as I said earlier, the the insurance industry is big with the control of this. Most insurance companies are the the magic number is 15. There are certainly some out there that are 10, but depending on the quality of your roof and and when it was in. So if this is a you know the very first roof to your home, uh a lot of builders just use the very cheapest material possible, and so those those tend to break down so much quicker. So that's where that eight-year number can kind of come into play, uh, is because it comes down to the quality of your material, how much maintenance you've been doing to your roof, because a lot of people forget about that. Uh, you should be doing maintenance to your roof just like you do to uh to a vehicle. Uh, you know, you can help extend the life of it. And so that's one of the things that's nice about toy roofing in our free inspections, is to give us a call, whether you feel like you need a roof yet or not. Let us come out, take a look at it. We can inspect it, check out the quality of it, educate you on where your roof is, uh, and and the status of it. And you may not need one, but the roof will tell the story. Uh, together roofing is extremely honest and transparent. And uh, you know, best case scenario for you, maybe we look at just doing a maintenance package so we can extend the life of that roof, build that relationship with you. Uh, worst case, maybe we can find some storm damage, look at a storm date, walk you through what that looks like, and help you get out get that new roof before we walk into storm season.
SPEAKER_18Right, which is, by the way, coming up, ladies and gentlemen. And so if anything that that Josh is saying here is hitting close to home for you, if your roof is aging, your insurance situation seems unclear, storm season has you considering your options. Uh reach out to Telgiroofing. It's very easy. You can go to telgeroofing.com. That's T-E-L-G-E-Roofing.com. Uh you can also call them 281-290-0606. Again, that number is 281-290-0606. This has been Josh Heyman from Telge Roofing for Telgi Tuesday. When you give them a call, make sure to let them know you came here from Patriot Talk 920, uh, that you heard this interview, that you heard about them through us, uh, so they can know that that we're we're here on their side and and so that Telgi Roofing is aware of all the good work that they're doing. I'm sure they know from all their five-star reviews. I'm sure you guys through this interview have also heard that as well. Josh, senior project manager for Telgee Roofing, I want to thank you so much for giving us your time this morning for coming on.
SPEAKER_09Oh, thank you. I appreciate uh getting the opportunity to come and speak with you and all of your uh all of your listeners. Look forward to helping them with any of their roof issues.
SPEAKER_18Of course. And uh as always, Lord willing, we will talk to you again in the future.
SPEAKER_09All right, have a good rest of your day. Thank you.
SPEAKER_18You as well. With that being said, ladies and gentlemen, when we come back from the break, we are going to jump over and we're gonna talk a little bit about an LGBT organization that has to produce court documents according to a new ruling from the Texas Supreme Court. But real quickly, before we go to the break, one more time, um, again, if you're saying that your roof is maybe 12, 13 years old, you know, with the Houston humidity, the Houston climate, uh, as we went over with Josh through this interview, and you're thinking, I I don't know what's going on with my roof. I just want to make sure you get a free inspection. So it costs you nothing, no obligations, no strings attached for them to come out, check your roof, and let you know what's going on. And you know, because of the relationships they've built with their customers, their reference pages, their five-star reviews, you're not getting scammed, none of that. They're coming out to help you. So you can go to telgeeroofing.com or call at 281-290-0606 for your free inspection. And again, let them know that you came from Patriot Talk 920. You heard the interview, you heard the advertisements, and you said, I just I need somebody to come check it out, regardless of what that looks like for you. Again, that's telgeroofing.com. Like I said, we're talking all about this organization from this Texas Supreme Court ruling when we get back. Text in 713-779-5978. That is 713-779-KYST. Text in, let us know your thoughts. Texas Supreme Court Orders PFLAG Records
SPEAKER_18Since the enactment of that law, the Office of the Attorney General has sought to determine whether medical providers are misleading insurers and others by billing treatments outlawed by S4 SB 14 as treatments for lawful purposes, skirting the law. Because such a mischaracterization would be in violation as well of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act. And so parents, families, and friends of lesbians and gays, that's PFLAG, is a nonprofit corporation describing itself as a resource for LGBTQ people, families, and allies. It is incorporated in California, shocking there, but also has many chapters and over a thousand members here in the state of Texas. In the summer of 2023, PF Lag joined several other parties in a lawsuit seeking to enjoin the enforcement of SP 14. The executive director of that nonprofit, Brian Bond, submitted an affidavit in the case mentioning conversations about alternative avenues to maintain transgender care in Texas, which of course led the Attorney General's office to believe that the organization may be in possession of information relevant to the office of investigation of SP S B fourteen violations by medical providers. So a little over a year ago, on February 5th of 2024, or two years ago, excuse me, in February 5th of 2024, the Office of Attorney General issued a civil investigative demand to PF Lag seeking documents supporting the bond affidavit as well as other related categories of documents. Rather than producing those documents, the organization challenged the demand in the 261st District Court in Travis County. After significant delays, Judge Amy Clark Meacham issued a final judgment on March 10th. That was one week ago, or a year, one week, one year ago, in 2025, which broadly protected the organization from producing several categories of material. And so, of course, that decision got appealed by the Attorney General to the Supreme Court of Texas. And so they released their decision just over the weekend, ruling in favor of the Office of the Attorney General and ordering the organization to release the requested documents. The opinion, which was raised in by Chief Justice Jimmy Blacklock, was highly critical of the district court ruling. He said, although this matter could have been handled much like a conventional discovery dispute, it was not. It remained pending in the district court for over a year, during which time the corporation's section 17.61G petition was used as a way to put the Attorney General's investigation on trial rather than as a way to obtain speedy judicial rulings on recognized discovery objections. To boil that down, he essentially said, What the heck were you doing? You you have a judicial obligation. You're not interviewing the attorney general to find out, well, what are you really here for? Your job is to aid in the discovery. I mean that's your whole job is to do that, and you just ignored all of that. He noted that although the discovery dispute is related to SB 14, it should not have been subject to greater judicial inquiry merely because of its politically sensitive topic. And he reaffirmed the right of the attorney general to investigate those sorts of issues. He said, as with any other law governing the medical industry, if the attorney general reasonably believes that doctors or hospitals are using deceptive practices to avoid detection of their violation of the law, he may use the tools available to him to investigate the matter. And so, of course, he said that although the courts can be sensitive to the privacy interests of those involved, the Office of Attorney General already agreed to follow and allow redactions. He said the district court's rulings protection protecting the corporation from the requested discovery and enjoining further investigation cannot stand. The district court's final declaratory judgment with injunction is reversed, and the matter is remanded for proceedings consistent with their opinion. On remand, the corporation must produce responsive documents. In other words, the district court made a horrendous ruling, which Travis County can't really surprise anyone, I suppose. But he produced they produced a horrid ruling that stripped the rights of the Attorney General away, uh really for no protection at all, because there are already going to be redactions. There's not going to be publicly accessible information that's designed for investigations that are already ongoing into the medical industry for deceptive practices and for violation of codified Texas law. And so there's the full right of the Attorney General from the will of the people to investigate these sorts of issues. To say, you know what, actually, you may have relevant documents. Maybe you don't, but it certainly seems like you do. And the Office of the Attorney General has the full capability and the full right to go in and to make sure that that is being being investigated. To make sure that everything that is on the table to investigate can be looked through, can be poured through to make sure that we're finding out all the relevant details pending that case. And so it's frustrating that we have to deal with this in the first place. We keep talking on the show about judicial activism and how often you find these sorts of people who are on the bench who have a certain obligation to the people of Texas, who have a certain obligation to the will of the people, um, and at bare minimum, even if you ignore that, to to perform their duties in accordance with the law. They have legal obligations to be fair, to be just. And as the Texas Supreme Court has said, that's not what happened in the district court case. It was it was very fishy. Smells very similar to a cover-up, I might argue. And it's it's very frustrating because had this not been appealed, and this is a reminder to everybody, had this not been appealed, it would have just been done. The district court, that would have been the final judgment on it, and no one ever would have seen those documents. Those documents never would have seen the light of day, and we would have not been able to continue an investigation into a very, very important topic for many people, uh, which is this sort of transgender medical care that results in the mutilation of children. And we have the full authority as the people of Texas to investigate those things, especially if there's an organization uh that is committed to protecting and covering up those issues. And so the Supreme Court has affirmed our ability to do that as a state, as an attorney general. And I'm very excited to see where this goes from here, because hopefully, as a result of this, the documents actually do have pertaining information to the case and we can find out more about what these medical providers are doing. In the meantime, uh, we have another interview coming up after the break. That is going on with VA Rep, that is the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals for an upcoming Range Day event they have coming up uh here very shortly that you'll want to know more about. If you want to know more about that event coming up here in just a few days, stick around after the break. SPEAKER_18On the line, I've got Carleen Johnson and Alisa Lenton with me right now. They're with VA Rep. That's the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals, Houston Chapter. Ladies, welcome to Patriot Talk 920.
SPEAKER_06Good to learn.
SPEAKER_18Right. So all of these different components all kind of coming together to really make sure the veteran community is being taken care of. A community that is unfortunately, shockingly, often overlooked. Uh that they are getting the help they need in in any arena that that happens to be in, but especially here in the real estate area. And so I also want to talk about as we're getting close here, this event that's coming up on March. 21st. I think it's gonna be a great time. Can you tell me about the upcoming VA rep range day? What this is, who it's for, and what people can kind of expect when they show up for this event.
SPEAKER_05Okay, um, for range day and Saturday, it's March 23rd. Um, it is 10 a.m. Um, so it's not just for veterans only, it's for everyone. Um, veterans can render and anyone that's over 21 age. And we will have we've already received some weapons, so we will have some weapons training to familiarize those individuals that are considering just to inform a faith environment for the future. Um then everyone, you know, you don't have that to when you're finding a weapon, you can do it in a controlled environment with personal um for registration for members for the UF, non-members of$25. And we have an opportunity for um the first register, um, would be able to get a free meal. Um, and it will be able to encounter additional other organizations, other veterans-friendly organizations, and you know, if they want to participate, if they even want to join the reputation, we have that opportunity. It is$99 a year, and it gets you access to our events at uh discount rate, and access to our education, and you know, access to personnel, which you know offers networking opportunities and ability to continue to service, provide great service to our veterans.
SPEAKER_18Right, right, of course. And so again, that's this Saturday, March 21st. And a good reminder to our listeners, by the way, this this weekend is looking shaping up to be a very beautiful weekend to be outside. Um, and so make sure that you guys are checking that out.
SPEAKER_04Ladies, where can people find more information about not just this event but upcoming events so they can register, find more information, and and keep up to date with all this for our chapter.org, v-a-r-e-eo.org. Um there is a link in your ability to read your range. Um organization overview and everything that VA Ref knows and what we're about in VAREP.net for Saturday event and any upcoming event here in Houston, VAREf Houston.org.
SPEAKER_18Perfect. Carlene, Elisa, thank you both for what you're doing here for veterans in Houston for coming on this morning. Uh, you guys, if you want to be a part of Range Day, that's again this Saturday, March 21st at Van Road Gun Range. That's 18920 Van Road here in Houston. And again, register early because as they highlighted, early registrants are entered for that free meal. Um, and so head over to that website, check it out. That's VA Rep, the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals here at the Houston chapter. Carlene, Elisa, thanks so much for coming on this morning for your continued dedication to veterans here in Harris County and beyond. And I appreciate you both giving us your time this morning.
SPEAKER_06All right, thank you so much. Thank you for the opportunity.
MD Anderson Data Theft Attempt
SPEAKER_18Of course. And Lord willing, we'll talk to you again in the future with updated events and more going on here in Houston. Yes, thank you. Have a good day. You as well. And so again, guys, make sure that you go check them out. They're doing a lot of great work. I I think it's very important. I say it often. We have members of our community that have been willing to give everything for us to maintain the culture that we have here in America, uh, a way of life that I think we all take for granted. And of course, everyone in history has taken whatever their way of life is for granted, but especially with what we talked about earlier with St. Patrick's Day, it's a reminder uh that what we have is only secure by nature of the actions we're willing to take. And we have people who've been willing to give everything for our freedoms, for our way of life. Uh, and often they end up overlooked by the community, uh, by those in in elected positions. And so it's important that they have people on their side dedicated to that. And so check them out. Make sure to come on out, check out Range Day. That's this Saturday, March 21st of Enroad Gun Range. Be a part of that, uh, contribute, maybe consider becoming a member to support veterans uh here in the Harris County community, here in the Houston area. Because it's very important that we band together and stuff like this uh and that we're all a part of what's going on to make sure that our veterans are taken care of uh when they come back home. They're able to purchase a home, they're able to navigate all of that. I'm sure it's incre I'm I I've not dealt with the VA system, but if if the things that I've heard about it are true, there's a lot of complications. Same with any industry, by the way. I mean, I get it. No one wants to fill out their own taxes either, but things are complicated these days. Uh and people need all the help they can get, especially when they've been of such service to our communities and to make sure that we get to keep the freedoms that we take so dearly and often for granted that they are taken care of when they come home. So check out that that range day, and I'm sure that's not the only event. They have more events coming up that you can be a part of. I'd highly encourage everyone to check it out, keep up to date with all of that. In the meantime, before we go to the break, real quickly here, I want to jump over to another story, one of our last stories of the morning. Specifically, former MD Anderson, this researcher, is getting jail time after an attempt to smuggle data uh to China. Uh, this Chinese cancer researcher who attempted to take data from Houston and smuggle it back home has now been sentenced to a year in the Harris County jail after pleading guilty to attempted theft of trade secrets. His name is Yu Yunhai Lee, he's 35 years old, pleaded guilty to the state jail felony uh back a few days ago, according to Harris County Court Records, and he's been sentenced to 364 days in the jail. He expected to be deported once he was released from custody, according to court records. Now, for some background, uh he researched breast cancer, was working on an anti-cancer vaccine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, was accused of downloading MD Anderson data on personal devices and uploading it into Baidu, which is a Chinese-based cloud data service, which we've talked about before, uh, because that's often used for this sort of espionage. In June of 2025, he was confronted by hospital officials about data he had downloaded, and he resigned amid an internal investigation. In July, days after he left his position, he was stopped at Bush Intercontinental Airport while he was attempting to fly back to China, starting to get out of here on a one-way ticket back home. Customs agents found evidence that he had downloaded data on a personal laptop. At the time, he believed he told agents that he believed his research was going to waste and that he intended to continue his research at a Chinese university. Investigators wrote, Lee added that he was hoping that U.S. Customs and Border Protection would not discover this information on his electronics, and so he agreed to plead guilty to a downgraded charge of attempted theft. He began working for MD Anderson back in 2022. Uh part of his research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense. When he started working in the U.S., he also signed confidentiality agreements, of course, uh, that were meant to prevent him from sharing information outside the cancer center, according to court records. He also certified that he didn't have foreign research funding or outside affiliations, though, as we've all hopefully come to be aware of, if they're coming from China, they automatically have outside affiliations, just by nature of being Chinese. That's not a racist thing, that's just the truth. There's a reason this has consistently happened from people whose home country is China. Uh, they've come over here, whether that's in research positions, uh, elected positions, whether that's in staff positions, whatever that's in. We know that we've had consistent issues with this sort of trade secrets going back to a foreign adversary. And so I I personally don't know why we're still hiring people to do this sort of what we'd consider if you have to sign a confidentiality agreement, if you're given any sort of clearance to do this sort of research and have access to American data and American research, why in the world are we taking people from countries that we know, we know how the Chinese Communist Party operates. We're well aware that there are not only incentives, but there are dangers to not reporting back. What sort of incentive do we have to hire people from these sorts of countries? There isn't one, by the way. It doesn't benefit us at all. It's merely a benefit to China's data servers. And so, despite his pledges, he was receiving funding, of course, from the Natural National Science Foundation of China. So he was getting outside funding, by the way, and was performing research for Chongqing Medical University, according to a complaint written by a Texas Department of Public Safety investigator. While he was researching at Indy Anderson, he was listed as an author on medical research published in China. So again, it wasn't even a cover-up. He was doing this stuff actively. He didn't at the end say, Well, I guess I'll take this data back because I feel like it's going to waste. Merely a lie. He'd been smuggling this data out for an extended period of time, receiving funding from his home country. And again, that's exactly what we'd expect. Nevertheless, we're getting close to the break here. So when we get back to wrap up the show, we're gonna jump over and talk about a situation where Texas has now blocked Oklahoma land grab from this property owner in Oklahoma who's trying to take part of Texan's land and claim that it was his. We'll talk all about that case when we get back from the break. As always, if you'd like to text in, this is your final opportunity during the show to do so. You can text in at 713-779-5978. One more time. That is 713-779-KYST. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. SPEAKER_02The Medicare Minute with Justin White is brought to you by Senior Health Services.
SPEAKER_24If you are of Medicare aids or getting close or you have a loved one that is, be careful with those unsolicited phone calls that I know you know about. We get told about them all the time. What you need to know is that many of those phone calls are not even legal. They're coming from offshore call centers. Sometimes they're calling regardless of whether you're on the do not call list. Isn't that nice of them, by the way? It's really sweet of them to just do that because they are thinking that they can't get caught. Bottom line is when you get on there and you talk to them, they're already kind of operating sidelong of what should be done. And sometimes people end up in plans that they did not intend to enroll in. And so what do you do? Call somebody local. If you got a local agent, my gosh, call them and get in front of them. And if you don't have a good agent, think of an organization like Senior Health Services where you can sit down, talk about what you're looking for, and get the help that you need. You don't need to be talking to phone operators from other countries that you don't know who they are, where they are, or what in the world they're doing.
SPEAKER_02Medicare choices are easier with a professional in your corner. Senior Health Services is not associated with the government, so you know you can trust them. Visit Senior Health Services.com today to connect with a trusted agent for a free consultation.

SPEAKER_18The lawsuit, first filed in August of 2025 by an Oklahoma landowner in Bryan County District Court, argued that shifting conditions along the Red River meant the state boundary had moved, potentially giving the plaintiff ownership of land currently recognized as part of Texas. The case named several Texas landowners as well as the state of Texas itself. Pageant's office intervened alongside the Texas Department of Transportation, arguing that the lawsuit was relied on an outdated legal authority and that Texas could not be sued in Oklahoma courts without its consent. And last week, the Oklahoma District Court agreed. In a ruling dated March 8th, Judge Mark R. Campbell determined that the court lacked jurisdiction over the state of Texas and granted Texas's motion to dismiss the claims against it. Paxson said, quote, the full force of the law will come crashing down on anyone trying to seize Texas land. I will always defend our state sovereignty and will not allow erroneous theories to undermine Texas' landownership. Imagine you just you're in Louisiana and you're like, it'll be cool. If if Louisiana stretched a little further closer to Houston through Beaumont and stuff, and you're like, ah, I'll sue them. And so in Louisiana court, you're like, we want part of Texas. And the Louisiana court goes, Yeah, it's ours. Texas should Texas should just say, no. What are you gonna do, puny little Louisiana? What are you gonna do? You're gonna come in and take it? It's not gonna happen. Same to Oklahoma. So you know what? I love Oklahoma as much as the next guy, but you don't get to take our land. That's not gonna happen. And the Oklahoma district court knows that that's not gonna happen. So hence they dismiss the ruling. But consistently, people are trying to take stuff from Texas and Texan sovereignty. One of those things they're trying to take from you as a Texan is not only your land, but also your rights. And that's why you should join our sponsor, Gun Owners of America. They understand that you have God-given rights that cannot be stripped away from you, cannot be infringed, and they fight for them every single day. They fight for them by campaigning for candidates who are ultimately in support of the Constitution, as they should be, which means that they are willing to defend and support your Second Amendment rights. They also lobby inside the legislative session, which by the way is I know you're like, oh, it's a year away. It'll be here before you know it, I promise you. And you want gun owners of America fighting in the Texas legislature to make sure that our rights are defended and supported. Now they do that through lawsuits against tyrannical government regimes and tyrannical governmental policies, like the NFA, ongoing lawsuit. All that, as it turns out, is not free. They need your support. You can go to goahhouston.com. It is a$25 per year membership,$25 annually. That goes right back to the campaigning, to the lobbying, and to the lawsuits. Again, that is G Oahhouston.com to become an annual member for$25. GOAHuston.com. That will do it for the show today. I want to thank everyone for tuning in. We had a couple of great interviews. Uh we talked all about St. Patrick's Day, which again, happy St. Patrick's Day. I know that we talked about how it's not just about wearing green, but wear green. Be supportive of the day.
