Hope Is Back In Storytelling
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A box office sci fi surprise sparks a bigger question: why do people light up when a story feels clean, brave, and hopeful again?
We start in Houston with a local librarian earning top recognition, then zoom out to what our culture rewards and what it ignores. That leads straight into Project Hail Mary, where we talk about why audiences are packing theaters for a film that does not preach politics but still carries a clear message about sacrifice, courage, and meaning. I explain why I think movies are never truly “neutral,” and why a story that mirrors the gospel can hit harder than another round of grim, agenda-driven entertainment.
Then we hit Texas news and policy. We break down newly revealed Lena Hidalgo rodeo texts and what they show about public drama versus private reality. Julie Pickren from the Texas State Board of Education joins us to discuss the Texas social studies standards rewrite, including debates over classical education, Western civilization, patriotism, and organized pressure to remove major parts of U.S. and Texas history.
We also bring it back to everyday life: Houston storm-season weather, a Telgee Tuesday deep dive on roofing and Texas homeowners insurance changes like actual cash value versus replacement cost, a disturbing child endangerment case involving THC gummies, a school shooting that raises the culture question, Texas moving to block professional licenses without lawful presence, and whether screens in classrooms are making kids learn less.

Why Culture Needs Excellence Again
Project Hail Mary And The Gospel
Lena Hidalgo Rodeo Texts Unpacked
SPEAKER_18Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative brought to you by Texellent AC Service. Now, I've kind of held off doing this review. And before I get into this review, I want to highlight kind of the reason I'm bringing this up. Um, because this librarian here in Houston apparently won State Librarian of the Year, which I I guess I could say congratulations for that. I don't know what that actually entails. I haven't had time to really dive into the eligibility requirements for State Librarian of the Year. Not something I've ever pursued, if I'm being honest. So I don't know often what that entails. Nevertheless, this is a Houston librarian. Her name is Brooke Corso. And uh apparently she serves as the librarian at Pin Oak Middle School and has served as a librarian there since like 2018. And so she's she talked all about how she's excited to represent Houston ISD, all about all this different stuff. Uh, serve in these leadership positions, assist in whatever way she can. And so I kind of want to get into this because not only is this exciting for Houston, but I think that we're finally seeing a return, hopefully, in our culture to normal things worth celebrating, normal things worth doing, uh, and making it normal normal again. And what I mean by that is for a very long time, and maybe not a very long time at the same time, we have as a culture refused to to actually pursue excellence. We have we have refused to pursue greatness, and we have straight up refused to prioritize what's good. And and you can tell I'm kind of going a direction with this. I'm I'm trying to get over, I'm trying to segue it well. We'll come back to this in a moment. But I was I was talking with a friend this morning, and then you're like, what friend gets up that early? Blue collar workers, ladies and gentlemen, getting up real early. Uh it's a lot of our listeners, by the way, because who really nobody wants to get up this early. It's just the people that have to. Nevertheless, we were talking, and uh, he's a big, big sports guy. We have a lot in common, and then there's there's our where we kind of split, and that is that my form my favorite form of entertainment has and will always be media in the form of movies. I that I love movie magic, I'll watch just about any movie. I'll even hate watching a movie where I know the movie's gonna have some woke crazy agenda, and I'll watch it and I'll be upset about it. I'll still I'll still have a good time being upset. Uh but big sports guy. I mean, he'll watch football, he'll watch literally any sport. If it exists, he'll probably watch it played. And we were having just all in good fun a disagreement because I'm saying, you know, I've gone and seen the same movie now in theaters because I have a subscription where I can go see basically as many movies as I want. I think as of today, I'll have seen the movie maybe eight or nine times in theaters. And I know, I know the the gasp from from our audience saying, What are you doing with your time? But if you've seen this movie, I think you'll understand why I've seen it so many times. I really, I really should also do like movie reviews at this point. But I went and saw this movie a bunch of times, and he was he was saying, Oh, I can't believe you did that. I said, Dude, you're watching like so many sports. Like every night you're talking about what sport happened. I was like, you don't get to tell me that I can't watch a movie a few times. But I bring this up to say the movie that I watched is already arguably, inarguably, the most successful movie of the year. Already. And I know you're like, oh, well, we're only in March. We're basically in April, and Super Mario is probably gonna end up being more popular only by nature of the fact that really big IP kid movies always do well. Always. Uh whether that's minions, frozen, they just people just want a good family movie. Uh which the movie coming up, it's Super Mario, comes out later this week. Gonna do great. But the movie I'm talking about, if you've not heard of it, and I'm not, this is not sponsored, this is not an ad. This is just me talking. You should go see it if you're at all able, if you have the time and the resources to do that. Uh, the movie is called Project Hail Mary, and I haven't really talked about it on air much. It's a sci-fi, it's an original sci-fi based off a book. Uh, it's not connected to any of the other big sci-fi, Star Trek, Star Wars, uh, none of those. It's not connected to Interstellar. It's it was written by the same author who wrote The Martian, if you've seen that film. But I get into this because there's stuff going around right now, kind of discussing the political agenda of the film. The reason why I like the film so much. And when I was talking to my friends at church about this movie, I was kind of describing how seemingly we we've found a movie that's not slipping in, or, or I guess the big theory is that it's not slipping in a political agenda. Now, the left, of course, wants to claim it anyways because it's a sci-fi, there's like not climate change in it, but there's at least uh they say it's alleging, they're alleging that there's some sort of pointer to the concept of climate change, which I I don't think the movie does that, but that's what they're claim. At the same time, I'll turn it around and say, unlike much of the right, I actually think there is a political agenda. Because I happen to think that everything in one way, there's no such thing as neutrality. I don't believe that. I think something is good or it's not. I think the world is, for the most part, black and white. And I know that in in our modern sensitivity, we don't want that, most people don't want that to be true. Oh, what about this and that? It is. You either serve Christ or you serve sin, you serve the flesh, you serve the devil. Those are the options. And you can see that on display in movies that you watch. Uh C.S. Lewis has talked much about true myths, right? Where you take these fiction stories and you find out, wow, that's a that's a very beautiful picture of the gospel. Uh that was his goal through Narnia, Jarr, Tolkien's, of course, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. A lot of those things come out. Watching this movie, and I don't want to give any spoilers, I know it's been out for a little over two weeks now. So I guess it's not really spoiler alert at this time, but it kind of is, so I'm not gonna give any spoilers. But I'll say the film is in recent memory one of the best pictures of the gospel and of Christian living that I've seen in a very long time. Uh it it does an incredible job painting the story of what Christianity is supposed to look like, what sacrifice looks like, uh, the willingness to give up one's life for another. All those things are very common themes from start to finish in in the film. And it just does an excellent job portraying it. And the reality is the fact that this movie, as and for those who don't know box office numbers and aren't involved in the movie industry at all, sci-fi original films, original films in general, don't do nearly as well as franchises and big IPs, right? You're you're never gonna find, or you're rarely gonna find, an original film that does as well as big franchise series. Like if they put out another Pirates of the Caribbean for the the what, the eighth time, it it's it's going to do well just by nature of it being connected to so many, so much nostalgia. And so when people put out an original film, a lot of times it just won't do well because it doesn't have the name recognition that big, big film franchises have. Top Gun Maverick, great movie, but it was always going to do well because you had the nostalgia of the original Top Gun propelling it forward. This movie didn't have any of that, right? It had a pretty loyal book audience, but that's that's a small niche, especially for male lead sci-fi. Not necessarily uh the biggest realm for books these days. Uh not usually what you're going to find on the bestseller lists, generally. But the book was great. The movie was great, and I think it highlights how much people desire to see the gospel on display. Even in modern culture, even in situations where you have so many atheists and agnostics and Islamic influence and all these things going on, the number one movie right now of the year has been a movie that is is quite literally just a painted picture in sci-fi of what Christianity looks like. And they didn't put a lot of language in it. They didn't put any of the typical Hollywood sex scenes in it. It's it's very family friendly uh by any stretch of the imagination. And it's doing very, very well. Uh I think it crossed$300 million globally over the weekend. It's it's the highest domestic earner, the highest global earner at the box office. Everyone's going to see it. I mean, if you go see it on a weekday in the middle of the day, the showings are still booking up. You still aren't going to get a center seat if you try to reserve it day of. It it the theaters are still filled with people like you haven't seen in a very long time. The parking lot has been fuller, people are more excited. It's going to be a good year for movies. Anyways, you have things like The Odyssey coming out, uh, you've got, of course, another Spider-Man, another Avengers, another Dune movie, right? You have uh a movie about Michael Jackson coming out here in a little bit. All these things. But this movie, this original film, uh, this this sci-fi has done such an excellent job while sticking to, and and Ryan Gosling, who's the lead in the film, uh, actually did an interview where he was asked, like, what was the purpose? Like, why did you do this? What kind of drove you? And he said it was for his daughters that he wanted to kind of come out and say that there that we should not be hopeless, that there are still hopeful stories to be made. Stories to be made that that display why we have hope, what we believe in, what drives us, right? And and good things, beautiful things. And that's not even getting into the, of course, the cinematography, the beauty of the film, the fact that they they, of course, used post-production editing, but did not use CGI and green screens for the film itself. It was all built-out sets, which is unheard of in this day and age, especially for something like sci-fi, uh, where you're having to build enormous sets to make it work. But all of this kind of highlights that I think people are fed up with the hopelessness and with the obvious agenda of wokeness and social justice, and they just want to be told good stories again. And it it kind of throws back to the G.K. Chesterton I'm not I'm not giving the full quote because I don't have the quote in front of me, but to paraphrase, and I've said this before, it's a beautiful quote. He says You know, these fiction stories about dragons are not written to teach children that dragons exist, because they already know that dragons exist. They already know that there are monsters out there. That's true. He said these stories are written so that they know that there are people who can fight monsters, so that they know that good can defeat evil. So that they know it was like St. George and the Dragon. He said, This story was not written so that you knew that there was a dragon, it was written so that you knew that there was a Saint George, right? So that you knew that there was someone who would fight, someone who would stand up in in front of immense evil in the face of that, and do good anyway. And the story, again, does just a superb job at amplifying that, at highlighting that. And so I I gotta be careful what I say, because I don't want to spoil the movie. It really is the twists and turns will, if you have not seen it yet, uh will will certainly will certainly surprise you, will certainly be very dramatic, very difficult, um, and and very emotional, but it's it's well worth it. And so if you've not seen it yet, you should go see it. But a lot of people are seeing it. A lot of people on the right are seeing it. People that I usually look to who I know will go see movies and will have something bad to say about it, who are saying, you know, this is actually actually a really good movie. I think it has somewhere around a 95% critic score and a mid 90% audience score, meaning both critics and general audience viewers enjoyed the movie, which again is is a rare thing. Usually you'll see high critic reviews or high audience. It's not that common that you see both. Usually that's kind of a telltale sign that the movie is pretty good by by all accounts, and this movie has achieved that, on top of it also being wildly successful financially for the company. And I I think the reason for that is very straightforward. It's very simple. The people are done with with not done with, but but people are looking for something else. People are looking for movies that bring joy and hope and meaning back into filmmaking and and by by extension, back into writing, back into design and and beauty and architecture. And we've kind of lost sight of that in recent years, especially in the movie industry. As we're all well aware, even a lot of the kids' movies have had intentional side agendas in them and gay characters here and there and and this and that, all the other things designed to promote their agenda on the big screen. This didn't have that. That the the this was so obviously not the intent of this film. And the reason why it's so successful is because people want that back. In America today, and it's not just America, it's globally. People are looking for stories that speak the truth. People are looking for stories that tell us that once again, yeah, there are there are crazy things going on. There are things that are difficult to grapple with that are going to require immense sacrifice and hardship, but that at the end of the day are well worth the sacrifice and the hardship that require immense dedication to whatever we're fighting for. And this film, Project Hail Mary, has done that. And I I think it's it's finally time that we start having that conversation that this is what people desire, this is what people are looking for, and people want hope again. People want to celebrate that which is good, that which is beautiful, that which is true, even in their fiction, even in their even in their fiction sci-fi films, that's what people want again. There's just a good old-fashioned movie, right? It's not complicated, doesn't have all these crazy theories in it. It's not some super complex like interstellar where you gotta watch it a couple times to really understand the gist of what happened, right? It's a it's a it's a movie you can just go in, watch, and have a really good time. One that is without those side agendas and is very obviously pointing back uh to the gospel and how we're called to live as believers. With that being said, speaking of a lot of these changes that we're seeing, a lot of the stuff that's changing, one thing that is not changing that you're probably well aware of, is Lena Hidalgo. Uh apparently there are some new text messages being revealed, uh her communications with rodeo officials regarding her removal from the concert, emails and text messages that reveal those conversations between Lena Hidalgo and her staff with the Houston Livestock Show and rodeo leaders leading up to and after her removal from the concert a couple weeks ago. And so apparently it it appears to have been a mostly cordial relationship according to the released text messages, but things clearly went the other way. I wonder whose fault that was. We'll talk all about those newly revealed text messages and emails when we get back from the break. As always, if you would like to text in to the morning show, make your voice heard. The number is 713-779-5978. That is 713-779-KYST. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. I'll be right back with some updates from Lena Hidalgo's office after the break.

SPEAKER_18So as you get into some of these, uh dozens of pages, by the way, are adapted, citing public official safety and security or government security system spec specializations and operations, all those sorts of things. But in in a text from last year, Judge Adalgo reached out to Rodeo Houston chairman of the board, Pat Mann Phillips, to invite her on a trade mission to Paris this year on Sunday, March 8th. After the rodeo had been going on for about a week, Judge Adalgo texted Mann Phillips, quote, Hi, thinking of you. You're doing amazing. Hope you are cherishing amidst the busy. No need to reply. Then on Wednesday, March 11th, after posting about getting kicked out of the Megan Rooney concert on Facebook, she sent rodeo leaders a letter about the incident, which she claimed she's never felt more unempowered as a woman. The roadie, of course, said it's because they didn't have tickets, which we all we all know the story. So the email got sent to radio leaders at 5 07 P.M. that day, and 6 15 PM, Hidalgo texted Man Phillips directly. So essentially, uh, she said, Dear Pat Man, can we please meet tomorrow at your convenience? With Mayor Sample and Leisha Green. The father of late Sergeant Sarabia may also come. We would like to share how yesterday made us feel. The judge continued, also, I urgently need the recording from the shoot where people watching the show on the dirt walk into the dirt. I need all angles available for during the time of the mutton busting all the way until the concert was over. I was manhandled and believed that was a crime. Which it wasn't. Obviously. The following afternoon, Manhills replied, Per your request, the video footage is being couriered to you today from Legends Global slash HSHCSCC, which is the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation. She added a second message, quote, Lisa, please be advised, or Lena, please be advised. The HLSR executive committee met earlier today and has voted to revoke your ex officio director status and its privileges. If you have questions about the video footage you received earlier today, please contact Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation formal letter to follow. Now, of course, she didn't really respond to the heart of that. She just kind of came back and said, Well, who's who's in charge of l charge security, logistical questions? Later that Thursday, the judge came to visit NRG Stadium to review surveillance footage herself, but during a press conference afterwards outside the stadium said she couldn't find any relevant footage to support her claims of being shoved and threatened by rodeo security. Of course, after she'd already been sent the footage that they had, she said, Well, that's not what I needed, because it obviously did not show what she was hoping that it would show, maybe because what happened isn't what she said happened. But apparently, you also had staff uh that had been invited to the entertainment lineup. Uh it's unclear if she attended, but in February, the rodeo staff reached out to Lena Dalgo's staff to schedule a time for Man Phillips and President CEO Chris Bowman to drop off her badge packet. And they also sent a personalized letter asking her to participate in several special events, including giving speeches at Armed Forms Armed Forces Appreciation Day and First Responders Day. Text from last year also show uh one of the top staffers in Lena's office said, Thanks so much for all your assistance and support at the show yesterday. Judge Hidalgo appreciated everything you and your team did to ensure she and her guests had a great time. Nevertheless, they also get into free tickets that she got, all this sort of stuff. And the reason I bring all this up is to highlight really the common theme, the common denominator here, which is when you talk about Lena Hidalgo, one thing that everyone should be aware of, and there are a lot of people like this. It's not just Lena Hidalgo, she just happens to be the unfortunately the Harris County judge, so obviously it's on full display. But there are many people in our modern day that y just are eternally ungrateful. You've heard the phrase that you just can't please everyone. There are people who you just can't please them, period. No matter what you do. You can give them basically unlimited free tickets, have a very cordial relationship, uh, prop them up, promote them, have them speaking at your events. You could be as close friends as you possibly can. And then one time you run out of tickets and say, Hey, you can't be here, and the whole thing explodes to the point where she's now calling for investigations and allegations of racism and sexism on your organization, all because of one instance where she wanted something and she didn't get it. And these technologized emails kind of highlight what we already knew, but they also kind of showcase there was this real relationship there. There was a very cordial and friendly relationship between Lena Dalgo, Lena Dalgo staff, and staff at the rodeo with personal text messages, personalized letters, invitations, all this sort of stuff. And none of that made any meaningful difference in how she handled things, right? Because obviously, in a normal friendly relationship, you would text and call and have meetings before anything ever gets released publicly. Right? Your first response would not be to put out a letter on social media and then and then to text your friend and say, Hey, just by the way, put out a letter. Can you give me the footage? Right? That that's not usually how you'd handle things between friends. You should have text over and say, Hey, I need to talk about what happened. I don't feel comfortable with this, something went wrong. Can we talk about it? Where maybe you'd have been informed, yeah, that's policy. I I I I don't know what to tell you, right? Maybe there could have been some sort of rectification process to salvage that, which is what should have happened given everything we see from the emails and the text messages that came out. Obviously, this should have been handled very professionally, uh, but that was never going to happen because of the person involved, because Lena Dalgo is not a professional. We know that from her dealings with a lot of people, from Mayor Whitmeyer to the GOP3, right? Whoever she doesn't like or appreciate gets thrown under the bus at every available opportunity. And that's a character issue, a major character issue, by the way, and one that should not really come as a major surprise to any of us who have been dealing with Lena Hodalko for an extended period of time and know well her history. This is not a surprise. This is not a moment where we're shocked. This is kind of par for the course. With that being said, we're going out from the break. We're gonna have a couple things going on. First of all, we're gonna have Julie Pickering coming on from the State Board of Education to give us an update on some of the votes coming up, what's going on with school curriculum here in the state of Texas. Very exciting guest, by the way, very exciting interview that I've been coming up for the first few minutes of the next segment. And then we're gonna jump over and we're going to talk about a caregiver here in Houston who was accused of giving a four-year-old THC gummies that led to the hospitalization of that little child. All that coming up in the next segment. If you would like to text in, let us know your thoughts on anything we're covering or anything we're not. The number is 713-779-5978. That is 713-779-KYST. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. And Lord willing, I'll return right after the break with the interview and that story.

SPEAKER_03The Medicare Minute with Justin White is brought to you by Senior Health Services.
SPEAKER_05If you are of Medicare age or getting close or you have a loved one that is, be careful with those unsolicited phone calls that I know you know about. We get told about them all the time. What you need to know is that many of those phone calls are not even legal. They're coming from offshore call centers. Sometimes they're calling regardless of whether you're on the do not call list. Isn't that nice to them, by the way? It's really sweet of them to just do that because they are thinking that they can't get caught. Bottom line is when you get on there and you talk to them, they're already kind of operating sidelong of what should be done. And sometimes people end up in plans that they did not intend to enroll in. And so what do you do? Call somebody local. If you got a local agent, my gosh, call them and get in front of them. And if you don't have a good agent, think of an organization like Senior Health Services where you can sit down, talk about what you're looking for, and get the help that you need. You don't need to be talking to phone operators in other countries that you don't know who they are, where they are, or what in the world they're doing.

SPEAKER_18I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative brought to you by Texant AC Service. On the line from the State Board of Education, we have Julie Pickren. Welcome to the show, Julie. Hi, good morning. Good morning. So I want to get some background before we jump into all this, and we'll get into how people can sign up to testify, when the next meeting is going to be, all these sorts of things. But I want to kick it off so people are understanding kind of what's going on in Texas education right now. Can you give us some background on what's going on on the social studies history side of things?
SPEAKER_20Yeah, so um every every decade or so we look at entire silos of education to uh update or reform or you know, just um bring better, better standards or better techniques into play. And so right now we've been working on uh redoing entire the entirety of kindergarten through twelfth grade social studies. So US history, Texas history, world history, civics, government, economics. So everything that has to do with social studies, kindergarten through twelfth grade is undergoing a full rewrite of our of our Texas standards.
SPEAKER_18Awesome. Yeah. And so obviously for for some of us, this is a great opportunity to kind of bring back uh you could even say a sense of normalcy uh to education to say, hey, how about we actually just teach the truth and kids can grow up to be critical thinkers, and if they want to have opinions that differ uh in terms of what that means, then sure, we can have that conversation. But the large design is to educate, right? Is to teach them what happened.
SPEAKER_20Yes, exactly. And we've already adopted a framework for the uh for the standards rewrite. And so our framework, we have shifted Texas back to more of a classical education model, including we've added to it patriotism, we've added to it using the Bible, Old Testament, New Testament for instructional text, because you can't you don't get to the founding of America and the founding of Texas without the influence of Judeo-Christian values in Old Testament, New Testament. And also uh for the first time, we've actually added uh teaching Western civilization into social studies. So uh we're ready, we're ready to teach the truth, you know, the good, the bad, the ugly. But what we've seen now is uh this uh pair, the Council of American Islamic Relations, which Governor Abbott has designated as a foreign terrorist organization. They have now been before our board three times to testify before our board, and they also held a press conference, and they want a complete rewrite of U.S. and Texas history.
SPEAKER_18And I want to get a take on this because what what do you what when you say a full rewrite, what does that look like practically? What are they what are they desiring out of the curriculum? Because obviously, right now the goal of the curriculum is just to teach the truth, right? It's not just to inject Christianity and indoctrination, it's obviously to come in and say, hey, let's talk about historical reality. Let's talk about men like Christopher Columbus, like Thanksgiving, right? These things that did happen and are a major lynch point in American history and American civilization. So what's what what is care doing in terms of what are they looking for?
SPEAKER_20So they, like I said, they have testified now three times, and uh their their affiliates, their members have testified three times now before our Texas State Board of Education, and they held a press conference in Austin. So um, what they're looking for is they want us to remove Christopher Columbus, they want us to remove Thanksgiving, they want us to remove teaching founding documents, teaching founding fathers, teaching George Washington, even to the point of Texas history, they want us to teach that the Alamo was designed and built to honor Islam. So this is very different. You know, in 21 and 22, we were fighting against uh critical race theory, 1619 project, you know, all of the Marxist um indoctrination of our kids, which that Marxist indoctrination that left everything in place, it left founding theaters in place and uh founding documents in place and US and Texas history. That we just want to teach our kids to look at American texture through a Marxist worldview. This is completely different. This isn't leaving everything in place and teaching our kids to look at American texture through Marxist through Marxist land to create real resentment for a country and state. This is actually a replacement of US and Texas history. They want us to teach that the Islamic um um contribution to the founding of America and the Islamic contribution to the founding of Texas. And so in our meeting, I said it publicly, I said, that's great. Y'all if that's what y'all want. We'll teach uh what happened off the Barbary in the Barbary Coast with you know the men getting murdered and the women getting raped and children being enslaved to get off of the uh the Muslims off of the northern African coast that w that was the birth of the U.S. Marine Corps. Okay, we'll teach that. We'll teach real US history that that was that's your contribution. Your contribution was that so many people were being murdered and raped and enslaved that would that we had to create the United States Marine Corps to fight that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_18So okay, we can teach that. You want to teach Western civilization? Okay, well, if you really want, we'll teach the Crusades and why we had to have one of the most full-scale wars in history to deal with with the insanity that came from the Middle East back then.
SPEAKER_20Yeah, so they gave us a list of books. Kerr gave us a list of books that I'm gonna call historical fiction, which is a complete rewrite of US and Texas history to show that America's foundation and Texas' foundation is attributed to Islam.
SPEAKER_18And this obviously is the agenda, this is the goal, but that is why it is so important that people are kind of speaking out against this, uh, that we have something to say about it, because of course they're showing up en masse to testify in in favor of this sort of massive change to America and Texas history. So uh what what's that process look like? Where where do we go from here?
SPEAKER_20Okay, so just so everyone understands the urgency of this matter is that they already have members of the State Board of Education that are listening to them, that are sympathetic to their cause. That press conference that they held that demanded, you know, I appointed uh David Barton to be the content, an expert content advisor to the state of Texas on the social studies um uh review and rewrite of standards. And so in that press conference, they were demanding that he be removed. But in that press conference, they already have five Democrats that are going along with uh with their demands, okay? So they already have one-third of the Texas State Board of Education that is that is willing to do this rewrite of U.S. and Texas history. And then we saw the re uh Republican member from Houston at our last meeting that offered up amendments. The amendments are made online where he's carrying their water for them, too. He uh he put forth amendments to remove teaching all of our founding fathers and presidents, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, to remove them out of our standards, to remove patriotism out of our standards, and re and his amendments remove founding documents. So they've already got the one-third of the board with the Democrats. Now they've got a Republican helping to carry their waters. They're only a couple of votes away now. If they can get two more Republicans to go with them, that's it, they'll win. Texas will rewrite U.S. and Texas history to honor Islam.
SPEAKER_18Right. And as you mentioned, this rewrites go around every 10 years or so. So that's a massive shift for quite a long time in our education system. What do people need to be knowing or doing to try to change that outcome?
SPEAKER_20Okay, what people need to understand, number one, is this in fact this affects the entire nation. Uh, Texas is now coming up on having the most school children, and we have the largest education fund in America. And so, whatever standards we decide, whatever textbooks are written from these standards, these are the textbooks that will be written for every state in America. So this directly impacts um parents and grandparents and kids across the country. So, what we need is next Tuesday, April 7th, we are going to have a public hearing on this. We're gonna have a public testimony on this, and then we're gonna go to a vote. And so that vote is where these amendments will come forth. So, what we need is we need people to go to the website, go to um www.feo, it stands for state board education, f o e dot texas, p-e-x-a-f dot gov. And you can sign up there to come and speak publicly, or you can submit written testimony. Again, that is f-be-dottex, t-e-x-a-f dot gov. Sign up, come speak. I promise you, Kara's gonna bring a lot of people again um uh next Tuesday to testify in public testimony. Meeting starts at 8 a.m. We need your voice. But you can also go to my website if you need more information. You can go to my website, juliepicker.com, J-U-L-I-E, P-I-C-K-R-E-N, Juliepickran.com.
SPEAKER_18Julie, I appreciate you coming on this morning for keeping us updated, and Lord willing, we'll hear good news coming out the next time that we have you on.
SPEAKER_20Yes, sir.
Why Curriculum Battles Matter
SPEAKER_18God bless America and God bless Texas. Absolutely. Ladies and gentlemen, I before we end up going to the break, we're not gonna get to this story that we wanted to get into this segment because I want to talk about this for a moment. We've been talking about Islamic influence here on the show for quite some time now. And as I've I've been trying to kind of highlight and wake people up to, the reality is that, yes, while sort of violence and and this sort of jihad is often used as a fear-mongering mechanism uh to drive people into more government control and more government power, that is one aspect of what Islam does in its influence. And we've seen that for literally uh over a thousand years, right? That that is nothing new. That is the same strategy that has been used over and over and over again. But there's a strategy that's being used alongside that right now from organizations like the Council on American Islamic Relations and others like the Muslim Brotherhood, where there's this funding mechanism that is designed to influence American perception of reality, that is designed to influence the state itself without using violence, uh by kicking it off, by re-educating people, by attempting to rewrite history, by attempting to pretend as though Sharia law is good, as though Islam doesn't actually fight for Sharia law. No, we're not fighting for Sharia. We're just fighting for our rights and our enclaves and our beliefs. Uh but the Quran itself teaches things like Sharia law, right? That's where Sharia comes from, is the belief ultimately that the end goal of Islam, and I said this before, the Great Commission, as we as Christians know it, is to spread the gospel. The Great Commission, as Muslims know it, according to their own documents, according to their own what they call their holy book, is ultimately to subjugate every single person to the rules of Islam. That is the end goal, that's the design. And so they'll do basically anything they can to promote that goal, including rewriting our textbooks, including changing public perception, including being involved in politics and getting into elected positions, and so on and so forth, having that sort of influence, uh, donating to people's campaigns and so on and so forth. We continually see that. And so this is incredibly dangerous, this is incredibly toxic. If we allow this sort of curriculum to be rewritten, if we allow Muslims to come into the state of Texas and teach our kids false history, things that are not true, things that glorify a violent religion, that glorify a religion that is inconsistent and is incompatible with Western civilization in general. As we've known, again, for over a thousand years, it's been very clear that it is completely incompatible with us. And if they're able to rewrite the history curriculum to change that narrative, to change the truth of what happened in the perception of our young people, that's another major step, one of the most major steps that Islam has taken here in the West to transform how we participate, how we act and what we believe. Right. If you capture the hearts and minds of the young, you capture the hearts and minds of the adults. That's how it works. These people will grow up to vote, and those beliefs that they take from elementary to middle to high school will last long into their adult life. And it takes a lot to overcome a lot of the biases that you create at a young age. That's why they're trying to get so deeply involved in public education. And they're showing up with force to testify. So you need to do the same thing. As you mentioned, go to spoe.texas.gov, sign up. If you can't make it out to testify in person, that's obviously the best option. Sign up, write something written, put your testimony out there, say this is this is what we want as the people of Texas, as people of this great state. We want history revitalized, but but presented truthfully and honestly so that people know what actually happened and what this country is really about. Houston Weather And Storm Timing
SPEAKER_18I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative brought to you by Textellent AC Service. So strong thunderstorms could hit Texas later this week as a spring storm system moves in, followed by noticeably cooler weather in time for Easter weekend. While weather early in the week is going to stay mostly warm and somewhat humid, increasing moisture and a series of disturbances will gradually boost rain chances. The best opportunity for more widespread and possibly stronger storms arrives on Thursday, the day after tomorrow, followed by another round of rain and a cold front this weekend. Now, today is going to start off with cloudy and and and some patchy morning fog. Visibility could be reduced to a quarter mile or less in locations near and south of Houston, though they expect conditions to improve shortly after sunrise. Skies are going to turn partly cloudy by the afternoon as southeasterly winds pick up, especially west of I-45 and south of I-10, where gusts could reach 20 miles per hour or stronger. Temperatures could climb into the middle to upper eighties away from the coast with cooler upper 70s near the coast. A weak disturbance could squeeze out a few light sprinkles east of the Brassus Valley toward the piney woods, but most areas are staying dry throughout today. A light breeze this evening should also keep the fog from becoming too dense going in tomorrow as temperatures drop into the upper 60s. Now by Wednesday, by tomorrow, a few more neighborhoods could see a brief shower or downpour. Range heads are going to take up slightly as an upper level atmospheric disturbance moves overhead, though a rut ridge of high pressure over southeast Texas may limit how much activity actually develops. That means many neighborhoods are going to stay dry throughout tomorrow as well, with warm temperatures in the middle to upper eighties inland and again upper 70s along the coast. Now, further north and west across Texas, the same system is going to bring a risk of severe thunderstorms by late tomorrow, including large hail, damaging wind gusts, not here but throughout the state. That activity should stay well out of the Houston area. The storm storms could probably travel to Dallas or Wichita Falls. Now, if you don't get rain tomorrow, Thursday could bring better chances. Rain and storm change are going to ramp up significantly on Thursday as that stronger storm system moves in. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to push into southeast Texas, though we still don't know the exact timing of that. Some storms could be strong, and the system has the potential to bring more widespread beneficial rainfall. Clouds and rain will keep temperatures cooler with highs closer to 80 degrees as opposed to the middle to upper eighties. Friday is offering a brief break with only hit or miss showers, but another system is going to arrive over the weekend. Rain chances are going to increase again Saturday into Sunday as a cold front moves through the region. What is more certain is that behind the front, noticeably cooler air is going to settle. Regardless of the amount of rain that comes with it, temperatures may only reach the upper 60s to low 70s on Easter Sunday, with overnight lows dipping into the upper 40s to low 50s. Kind of highlighting again that you just don't know what the weather holds. And we're expecting some immense change in temperature pace for a bit going into next week. Nevertheless, I will do it for the first hour of the show. And when we get back from the break, we're going to have a very exciting guest. That is Shana Gayagos coming on from Telgi Roofing for Telgee Tuesday. Stick around, you're listening to Lone Star Conservative. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. Text in 713-779-5978, and I'll be back at the top of the next hour.
SPEAKER_09From deep in the heart of Texas, Houston's God-loving patriot, the voice of reason. This is our post-star conservative, Michael Wilson.
SPEAKER_18Uh, to talk all about what Telgee does, and furthermore, everything changing from insurance, uh kind of getting into details as to how insurance companies are functioning, especially with the storm season coming up, all that and so much more of this interview. Welcome to the show, Shayna.
SPEAKER_19Good morning, Michael. Happy Telgi Tuesday.
SPEAKER_18Happy Telgee Tuesday. I'm very excited uh to get into some of these details. I think a lot of people wonder about the details, what insurance looks like, especially with a an ever-changing landscape. To kick it off, for those of our listeners who this may be their first Telgee Tuesday, can you tell me a little bit about Telgee specifically?
SPEAKER_19Well, Telgee Roofing, we are one of what I like to call the dinosaurs in roofing in Texas. We have been open in the Cyprus and surrounding areas since 2009. Um in terms of roofing, 17 years, a 17-year, I mean, run of just growing and expanding is unheard of. Uh statistically, most roofing companies don't last more than two to five years out here. So we've built something strong, something solid, and we just keep on growing.
SPEAKER_18Right. And that also means a lot of the reason why, of course, is d dealing with how you guys treat your customers, what that looks like, that it's not always a roof replacement that they need, even though that might be more profitable. Sometimes that's maintenance. Sometimes that's just coming out and giving the inspection and letting the homeowner know what you found.
SPEAKER_19Yes. And you know, it's the free inspections. It's being honest. It's being, hey, it's not time yet, but we need to do some maintenance, or you know, we need to file, we need to replace. I mean, one of the things, the feedback that I love getting is oh, y'all came out last summer, you said it wasn't quite time, but you know what? Now it's time. Let's get going. Those are the feedback and the compliments that I love giving is getting is that Telgi is known to be honest and forthcoming and doing what's right for our homeowners and our clients.
SPEAKER_18Right. I think that's a large part of the reason why you've been around for 17 years uh and why people are calling back, right? It may not have been ready, but now they're saying, but we trust you to be honest with us, so please come back and be the ones who give us the next inspection.
SPEAKER_19Exactly. Exactly. I I actually got reached out yesterday. One of my one of my clients, I've uh I'm about to put up a third roof for their family. Wow. So, you know, I get I get clients that call back and oh, my mom's house, my cousin's house, you know, all of that. And we just love being in the community. We love building trust. You know, everyone with Telgi is very, very committed to taking care of it, might be their home, but it's our roof. Right. And we love taking that ownership. We love making sure that our families, our clients, our roofs are taken care of and performing correctly in this tough market with what we deal with out here.
SPEAKER_18Of course. And you mentioned uh you you use the word your clients because you're a project manager over at Telge Roofing, and I'm hearing that you actually uh kind of dealt with one of our listeners uh in terms of becoming a customer with you guys.
SPEAKER_19Yes, Michael. I actually um our first client that came that called in after hearing about Telgee Tuesday and Telgee Roofing, um, I actually handled their case. I built their roof, and that ended up being one of my bright spots of this season. A wonderful couple. Turned out they went to high school with my mother, grew up a street away from me, and they had actually been seeing me since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, running around with uh their goddaughter and buying us ice cream from the ice cream man and all of that. So you know. I have to give a little shout out. They'll know who they are. They listen every every time they can to, you know, Pecan Park for life. They'll know who they are.
SPEAKER_18Yeah, no, that what a small world, too, to meet people that you that you you know grew up around. That's incredibly exciting, but it also highlights for our listeners, by the way, uh, that this is a great opportunity. Some of our listeners have already taken that plunge and said, hey, look, it is a free, no obligation inspection. Uh we'll talk a little bit about that more as we get into this. I want to kick it off because I think what is or should be on every homeowner's mind right now, especially here in the Houston area, as we're getting into storm season, uh, we know that Houston does not mess around when it comes to weather, uh, from hail to storms, hurricanes, all the nine, the whole nine yards. What should homeowners be thinking about right now before storm season actually hits?
SPEAKER_19Homeowners, excuse me, really need to be gearing up for storm season right now. I am first of all, a free inspection. Get your roof looked at. We need to look at all your penetration points, your flashing, your valley, get up in your attic, externally, you know, visually inspect your soffit, your fascia, your gutter system. These are all going to be tying into your roofing system. Inside, walk all of your interior rooms, closets, garage, bathrooms, get a flashlight. If you are seeing any sort of even a dime-sized water spot, that's a sign of trouble to come. So, you know, having knowledge and power, knowing what state your roof is in before we get another storm like this derecho, or more hurricanes coming, or a hail storm, knowing where you are so you can get ahead of the problem saves you thousands of dollars. Thousands of dollars.
SPEAKER_18Right. And I love that one of the things about the free inspection is that it is no obligation, right? Um no no pressure, just kind of a professional set of eyes on your roof before we get those storms coming in, uh, which I think is a no-brainer. Now, something that I I exactly go ahead.
SPEAKER_19Yeah, no, no, exactly. We're not gonna push, you know, we want you to know exactly where you stand, and if you want that roof, we're gonna get you that roof. Um, you know, and and there's absolutely no obligation. There's not gonna be any pressure, anything like that. We just we want everybody protected because these storms, they can pop up and they can do damage before you even know it.
SPEAKER_18Right. And I I kinda want to pivot that in something that I think a lot of homeowners still don't fully understand, and th that's pretty reasonable given that the ever-changing landscape of insurance. I think the insurance landscape has shifted pretty dramatically over recent years, especially here in Texas. What are you seeing in some of those changes coming out from insurance and the way they operate?
SPEAKER_19You know, it's it's pretty disheartening because especially in you know, Texas, we are we we've always been under the impression it we pay our premiums, and when a storm comes, we can count on our insurance company. They're gonna be there to help us. It's the right thing. We've been paying, that's what we're paying for. And unfortunately, that's just no longer what I I'm seeing in this market. Um, you know, insurance companies, the ones that are staying in our market, uh, the ones that are not fleeing this market or refusing the right policies, the insurance companies that are staying here in Texas, especially along the Gulf Coast, are just um, you know, dropping coverage. And many times homeowners don't even know. They think that they are just fine. Their roof is only 10, 15 years old, and then, you know, they develop a leak or they get a hell storm, and then come to find out, the insurance company at renewal or, you know, another time has, you know, snuck in a drop of coverage. And so they are actually left holding the bag and having to pay way more than their deductible whenever the worst of the worst happens and they need to replace the roof.
SPEAKER_18Right. And so that's another thing. Uh, I want to get into some of the details on this, kind of the difference between actual cash value versus replacement cost value. I think this is you mentioned sneaking in some changes in coverage. I think this is one of the ways that happens. Can you kind of explain that terminology and what that distinction is for our listeners?
SPEAKER_19So, an actual cash value policy, the easiest way to understand it on layman's terms is going to be, let's say that your roof is rated at a 30-year shingle. And at year 15, there's a horrible storm and your roof is totaled. Well, what insurance is gonna do on an actual cash value is they're gonna depreciate it and they're gonna use some different formulas and algorithms to when it's totaled, actually pay you out what they call the actual cash value. The easiest way for homeowners to understand that in layman's terms is they're pretty much gonna give it to give you the Kelly Bluebird value on your roof. So they're not gonna be giving you enough money to replace the roof, which is what you're needing to do in that situation. And oftentimes right now, you know, you used to be able to get full replacement cost coverage on your roof up to 20, 25, even 30 years. Now the insurance companies, I mean, I've got clients in two million dollar homes with 11-year-old roofs that can't even get full replacement cost. They're on an actual cash value policy. So, you know, they're they're exposed to a lot of risk. And the insurance company is saying, no, and you know, they have their algorithms, their formulas, but it's it's pretty much like almost, you know, we would understand it as a Kelly Blue Book value of your roof. And it's never gonna be enough to replace the roof.
SPEAKER_18Right. So if your roof is, say, 12 years old and uh a hail storm comes in, totals your roof, destroys it, under an actual cash value policy, the insurance company is essentially saying, Well, your roof was already old. Here's what we think it was worth uh uh at the amount that it was before it was destroyed, not what it costs to put a new roof on. And I'm assuming the homeowner then would eat the difference between those numbers.
SPEAKER_19Yes, and also they're respect they're responsible for their deductible. And deductibles in Texas are getting pretty high. I mean, I'm seeing two percent, three percent, five percent deductibles, you know, and and that in those cases on an actual cash value with a two percent deductible, that's really the insurance company saying, hey, the roof is your problem, you're on your own. So, you know, that's also something you really need to check all the fine fine writing details in your policies because there are things getting snuck in and people think they are covered and they have almost zero coverage.
SPEAKER_18Right. And you also mentioned the age thresholds there. Uh you gave an example of 11 years. Insurance companies are now using it seems like 10 to 15 years as a depreciation trigger, um, rather than then, like you mentioned in the old days, telling homeowners, you know, replace your roof, drop in your coverage. Do we actually see that happening, that sort of shift down to 10 to 15 years?
SPEAKER_19Oh, Michael, absolutely. Um, in the insurance policy, I'm seeing it in, you know, written. But another thing that's happening is people are not able to sell their homes because of what the insurance companies are doing. So, you know, I'll have some of my real estate agent partners, you know, everyone that I work with in this industry, they'll call me panicking and saying, hey, I I have to close on this house on Friday, and the mortgage company is kicking back because my homeowner can't get insurance because the roof is 14 years old. Can you get out here quick and change my roof, Shayna? So, you know, if there's a fallout that's happening due to what these insurance companies are doing, but now, as a general rule, 10 to 15 years, you probably don't have full coverage, and you're gonna be forced if you want to sell your home to replace that roof.
SPEAKER_18Right, absolutely. Now, kind of pivoting that, tell Gee Roofing's perspective on this. How do you guys deal with insurance? Because I'm hearing a lot of talk that you guys are are very pro-homeowner in your approach, uh, even down to your interactions with insurance in general.
SPEAKER_19Now, when it comes to the insurance companies, we are we're we've seen it all. We've watched all the changes that have happened in the market. You know, we keep our ear to the ground on that. We are always looking for ways to make sure that our homeowners get what is owed to them. So we are here to guide homeowners through this because you know, once an insurance company gets involved, it is a completely different ballgame. You've got to know exactly what steps to take so that you can turn anything that the insurance company is trying to do that isn't in the best benefit of the homeowner, you've got to know how to correctly respond to that. And when you're in the business long enough, you kind of you get the playbook with you know, doing all of your different jobs and stuff like that. So tell me we guide our homeowners, we let them know if this happens, this is what's coming next. If this, okay, this door might be closed, but we know how to push this through. You know, so we guide, we work with other professionals in our industry to help us, and we do everything that we can to make sure that the homeowner is able to actually access the insurance premium and benefits that they pay for.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_18Absolutely. And so I I think for our listeners. Someone's listening right now and they're thinking, you know, I I don't actually know the last time my roof was inspected, or I have no idea then if my insurance policy covers what I think it does. That's I think what people should should go ahead and say, hey, maybe maybe we should call Telgi.
SPEAKER_19Absolutely. Absolutely. You can call Telgi. We can, you know, if you have your insurance documents, I can I can lift them over for you and let you know it it should be undercover. But you definitely want to call us out and you want to have us do a good free inspection. There's no obligation, no pressure. Just so that you can know. I mean, because very often people have no idea what's going on on their roof. And unfortunately, most people, especially in this market, you know, they believe that things are as they should be. They pay their homeowners premium. If something happens, they've got the backup, they've got coverage, they'll be just fine. Unfortunately, it's no longer that way in this market.
SPEAKER_18Right. And uh, you know, I I think the reality is that this is the time, especially with storm season coming up, a lot of people not understanding that the insurance companies are changing the way that things operate. Having someone come out, I think, is the first step. And so, guys, if you're interested in that, and you and you should be, you can either go to telgeeroofing.com or just give them a call to schedule that free no obligation inspection at 281-290-0606. And let them know that you you heard this interview. Let them know that you heard about Telgee Roofing through Patriot Talk 920 here on Telgee Tuesday. Shayna, I appreciate you coming on. This has been Shayna Gallegos coming on, project manager from Telgee Roofing. I appreciate you joining us for this Telgee Tuesday and for being willing to dive into the details on the way insurance companies are operating and what homeowners need to know.
SPEAKER_19Yes, thank you so much, Michael, and happy Tel Gesday, best day of the week.
SPEAKER_18Absolutely. Absolutely. I'm not going to correct you there. You're right. I greatly appreciate you coming on. And Lord willing, we will talk to you again in the future and get some good updates coming out from you.
SPEAKER_19Yes. Thank you so much, Michael. It was a pleasure to talk to you today.
SPEAKER_18Absolutely. One more time, ladies and gentlemen, if you would like to schedule that free inspection, you can call at 281-290-0606. And we kind of did it uh as a side mention, but I do want to highlight, you know, it is really unheard of uh to find a roofing company that's been around so long and is is still willing to work with customers the way that Telge Roofing does. That's why you'll find all the five star reviews. That's why you'll find so many happy customers uh who come back a second and third time for future roofs or for their friends and family's roofs, all of those sorts of things. Uh and so for sure, go check them out. Uh if if you're you know thinking to yourself, I just don't know. I don't know when I had an inspection, I don't know what storm season's gonna have this year, I don't know where my roof is at, I don't know if there's any issues. Totally free. It it literally is the simplest step you can take. Give them a call. Again, that is 281-290-0606. With that being said, when we get back from the break, we're gonna jump over and talk a little bit about that story we mentioned earlier, that Houston caregiver, uh, who's now facing charges uh after she was accused of giving a four-year-old THC gummies that led to her hospitalization, according to records. We'll talk more about the details of that when we get back. If you'd like to text into the show, the number is 713-779-5978. That is 713-779-KYST. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative here on Telgi Tuesday. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and I'll be right back after the break.

Child Hospitalized After THC Gummies
School Shooting And The Culture Question
SPEAKER_18Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative brought to you by Texellent AC Service. One more time, guys, for Telgee Roofing, when you give them a call at 281-290-0606, let them know you came from Patriot Talk 920. Let them know that you're a listener to the station, that you were here for Telgee Tuesday, uh, so they know that these interviews are worth something. And they are, by the way, because uh we've had Texan, not just getting a new roof, but things that people did not know about. Same, same when we have uh Justin White from Senior Services on Monday. People learn something new uh that a lot of people just don't know. Because if you're not in the business, you may not be aware of how these insurance premiums are changing, how they're charging you more, and essentially covering less at the same time. And so give them a call, let them know you heard about them through our station, get your free, no obligation inspection scheduled today. With that being said, let's jump in because this this is an absolutely wild turn of events. Houston police have arrested a 42-year-old woman who gave allegedly a four-year-old child THC gummies. Dania Ramos Velazquez, who's 42, is charged with endangering a child. Police said they were called last week to meet firefighters after a mother found her son unable to stand. According to investigators, the mother said she regularly drops off her four-year-old son at a neighbor's apartment while she goes to work. When she picked him up that day, he had fallen, appeared sick, was unable to stay conscious, and could not stand on his own. Court records show the child was hospitalized. Ramos Velasquez told police the child consumed more than one gummy inside her apartment, but claimed she didn't know they contained THC. Which I I I understand that if you're in a criminal kind of perspective, if you're dealing with the law, uh lying is usually the first mode of defense. Well, I uh whatever the lie is. But usually you'd hope, or you'd expect, not hope, I guess you want them to lie badly, but you'd expect that you could actually come up with a lie that seems even remotely plausible, even remotely feasible to be true. And this one is insane. Because not only did you have to purchase the gummies and the place where you had you didn't go get the gummies at the CBD Isle at Kroger, right? You obviously got them from somewhere that sold the psychoactive ingredient inside the cannabis all. So obviously you know where you got it, you know what it says on the packaging, you should be well aware of what it is. And even then, if you've ever used the gummies, I mean you bought them, what did you buy them for? If not to use them, if you ever use them, you very quickly found out that they were not merely CBD because when you use them, even in small trace amounts, you're going to notice the effects the THC has on your mind and body. That that that's just inevitable. And so this claim is so obviously untrue. Nevertheless, police contacted Child Protective Services and the Harris County District Attorney's Office, which accepted a charge of endangering a child. Uh by the way, this charge comes just at just before Texas has to implement new regulations on smokable hemp product. And so all of this is going on as the laws are the same as insurance in an ever-changing landscape where we're trying to keep updated on what the laws say, how they're changing, what that looks like in practice, uh, but regardless of what it looks like in terms of an overall ban, uh, as opposed to regulation, regardless of any of that, even if there were no real regulations at all, it is pretty obvious, or at least should be to almost anyone, if not everyone, that giving these sorts of things to little children, right? You didn't even just like say, Well, I know I gave it to a minor because you know we had a 16-year-old over and he wanted some. That would be obviously a problem. That would still certainly come with criminal charges. But you didn't do that. You gave it to a four-year-old, a four-year-old child, and then your only real defense is, well, I I didn't know what I bought. I didn't know what I was using. I I I wasn't aware, right, that that this was some sort of uh product that caused psychoactive reactions. I didn't expect hospitalization. I actually do believe that you probably didn't expect hospitalization to come, but I don't really know what you did expect when you gave a child this. And again, we should have higher standards for our society. And and I know that there's a lot of people who want to pretend like weed, marijuana, THC, whatever title you want to give it, pot, is not a drug. Right? I don't know where that claim comes from, but they they want to group it in a separate category. Well, it's not like, you know, we're we're we're smoking meth, right? It's not like uh we're we're doing lines of cocaine, right? So it's not that big a deal, but it is. Uh these are psychoactive ingredients that have frankly debilitating effects on people. They are, and I know that people hate this, but they are addictive uh by nature of what they do. Same as alcohol, by the way. Um, and and by the way, we'd be having the same conversation if we found out that you left your child with a caregiver who gave your child mass amounts of alcohol at four years old and ended up hospitalized because there were issues. It's the same thing. And so it's absolutely insane. But there's a lot of insanity going on among our young people. Uh, before we go to the break, let's jump over and talk about this other story because apparently this student has shot a teacher and then also shot himself at a high school here in the state. A 15-year-old student, by the way, who shot a teacher and then fatally shot himself yesterday, according to authorities. Uh no other injuries were reported at the Hill Country College Preparatory High School. But the teacher was taken to a nearby hospital. Como County Sheriff Mark Reynolds said hours after the shooting that he did not know her condition. He said, What happened today is something no community ever wants to face, but we prepare for something that we hope never occurs. He said the student shot the teacher before turning the gun on himself. Reynolds said that investigators were working to understand the relationship between the student and the teacher and looking into how the firearm was obtained. The small campus of roughly 250 students was placed on lockdown shortly after 830 AM, according to the school. One student said they heard loud bangs coming from a room on the second floor and then heard screaming. Another student told a TV station uh that she heard five shots and yelling before her debate teacher told the students to get into get inside a classroom. Students were bust to a nearby middle school where parents stood in long lines, some obviously praying as they waited to be reunited. Reynolds said the family members of the shooter had also gone into reunification line. Reynolds said, We're trying to collect as much information as we can from witnesses. You also have Jesse Lopez, a parent, who said that it would be difficult to tell his daughter that she has to go back to class. He said, for one, she has autism, she'll be afraid to go back, she'll be very afraid to go back. Uh the school canceled classes for today, but counselors are still going to be available for students and families, according to the principal Julie Wiley. Uh they said, she said, our hearts are with everyone impacted, especially that teacher, their family, and our school community. We know this has been a difficult day. Now, one thing that I want to highlight about this is uh kind of diving into what the left will obviously and inevitably do with a story like this one. Because the conversation will not be, how did we get here as a culture? The conversation will not be, hey, how do we actually prevent the thing that leads to these sorts of crimes? Hey, what's going on with our young people? No, no, no. That's not the concern. Obviously, the concern is only how did he get the gun? That that is consistently where the left goes. It always ties back into some way they can justify taking your freedoms on the basis that someone bad did something bad. And thanks be to God that our rights are not predicated on the actions of other people. Because if our rights were determined by how other people abused those rights, we would have no rights whatsoever. Every single right would be revoked from every single person on the face of the planet because bad people are, as we're well aware, and have continually done bad things. That's that's part of the nature of sin. That's part of the nature of a fallen world. It is inevitable that bad people are going to do bad things and they will use tools to do those bad things, whether that is a gun, a knife, a baseball bat, uh, you know, you have a car and a hit and run where they run over somebody, right? Regardless of what the weapon of choice is, people are going to use tools to do bad things. And the real conversation needs to center around where we've gone as a society and a culture for this to become a problem in the first place. Because I can tell you, as someone that grew up in a little more rural community, I I knew where my parents' guns were. There was there was nothing stopping me if I wanted to go get one, if I needed one, right? If I had to defend the home, if I was, you know, either home alone in high school or or if you know my dad was gone at work and I was the man of the house, even, you know, 10, 12 years old, I knew how to get a gun. It wasn't like I had no capability. You want to know why? Because my parents never were and never needed to be concerned that I was gonna go shoot somebody for no reason. Right? They never needed to be concerned that I was gonna go commit some sort of crazy homicide and go nuts. Because that wasn't culturally the norm, even just so long as a few years ago. Things have changed dramatically. Where violence has become justified, where young people don't see how evil a lot of this stuff is. And so they'll justify everything from school shootings to violence against their teachers or their classmates. And that that is the leading issue. That is the thing we need to be addressing. Not how did he get the gun? Not oh, well, the the kids have access. That's not the driving issue here. It's what kids are doing with that access. Because, again, we all are well aware that's not something different than it used to be. Right? It used to be the norm that that children could, if they so desired, have access to a firearm, but they understood the purpose. They were raised in a moral household that understood what good was and what evil was, and that's been transformed by a radical leftist culture where morality is subjective. Good is meaningless, evil, therefore, is meaningless. And the end result, it's why whenever an atheist asks me, how can a good God allow evil? I always ask, what is good and what is evil? What's your basis for even believing in that? Because if you're gonna believe that things like slavery are evil, things like murder are evil, then I want to know what you base that on. Because you've been telling me for years that we don't have an objective standard of morality, uh, that we can't legislate that, that we don't know what morals are, what good is, what evil is. So how can you even feign the question? How can you even ask it? Oh, well, why why why is Christianity been used to do such evil? Well, what is evil? What are you basing that off of? What's your standard of evidence for what's good and what's wrong? And of course, rather than being willing to address those very real issues, the left wants to take an opportunity for more power to take more rights away from the people, uh, and to interject their own, not even hidden, their own obvious agenda into these stories, which is well, the real issue is, of course, the guns, which is why, even in the midst of tragedy, is very important that we're fighting for our rights, that we understand where our rights come from and that they cannot be stripped away from us. And that requires becoming a member of our sponsor, Gun Owners of America. Gun owners of America understands that our rights come from God. And of course, they are enshrined in our Constitution, that they are not based on the actions of other people, that they do not change because bad people will do bad things, even when that's tragic, even when that's awful and evil, that the proper addressance of those grievances is not to take away the people's rights. And they do that in a variety of ways. Right. Obviously, they campaign for candidates. Right now we're in the middle of a busy election season campaigning for candidates who are supporters of the Second Amendment. Then, as we get into the legislative session, which is coming up, that's not just in the legislative session, by the way. By the time the legislation legislative session gets here, we largely know what the bills are going to be, what direction the House and Senate are going to go. They need to be preparing now and really from the end of the last session, going into the next session, what that'll look like, what they need to be promoting, what they need to be fighting for, and lobbying. That also sometimes means lawsuits. When there's actual tyranny that's been put into practice through policy, that means being willing to sue to say that's a violation of our God-given rights and standing on that. And so if you'd like to become a member, you can go to goahhouston.com. That is G Oahuston.com and is a$25 annual membership,$25 per year, which goes back to the lawsuits, the campaigning, and the lobbying to verify and guarantee that your Second Amendment rights will not and shall not be infringed. With that being said, we get back with the break. We're going to jump over because Texas is now moving to block professional and commercial licenses for illegal aliens, which of course comes after a recent opinion by Attorney General Ken Paxton requiring licensing authorities to obtain social security numbers from applicants. If you would like to text in, the number is 713-779-5978. That is 713-779-KYST. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. You are listening to the Lone Star Conservative. And I'll be right back after the break.

Sometimes they're calling regardless. Whether you're on the do not call list. Isn't that nice of them, by the way? It's really sweet of them to just do that because they are thinking that they can't get caught. Bottom line is when you get on there and you talk to them, they're already kind of operating sidelong of what should be done. And sometimes people end up in plans that they did not intend to enroll in. And so, what do you do? Call somebody local. If you got a local agent, my gosh, call them and get in front of them. And if you don't have a good agent, think of an organization like Senior Health Services where you can sit down, talk about what you're looking for, and get the help that you need. You don't need to be talking to phone operators in other countries that you don't know who they are, where they are, or what in the world they're doing.
SPEAKER_03Medicare choices are easier with a professional in your corner. Senior Health Services is not associated with the government, so you know you can trust them. Visit senior health services.com today to connect with a trusted agent for a free consultation.

Texas Moves To Block Licenses
SPEAKER_18Which is exactly the truth. I remember in high school, I went to a conference where the debate came up because we were talking about gambling. And the main argument against legislating gambling was, well, you can't legislate morality. And I remember thinking to myself, what's the argument here? And so I got up there on the mic and I said, What is murder wrong? And they said, yes. I said, Do we legislate that? They said, Yes, but that's because murder harms someone. I said, but is harming someone wrong? And they said, Well, yes. I said, So do we legislate against harming people because it's wrong? They said, Well, yeah, but that's interjecting. And it said, But you said, Well, yeah. Because obviously that's every single law we have is designed to pertain to morality. Every single one. Even if you argue from a libertarian perspective of, well, the goal is to not harm other people, you're still starting with the base assumption that harming other people is wrong. You are still legislating your version of government authorized morality, right? You're still saying, well, it is a big enough moral concern when people are harmed. Therefore, because it's wrong, we must legislate it. And so every policy is a legislation on morality. Every single one. Whether you're on the left or on the right, it's just a question of whose morality, which one's true, and which one should we legislate. We also had a question asking how to spell telgee. It is spelled T-E-L-G-E. Uh so if you go to telgeroofing.com, it's T-E-L-G-E-R-O-O-F-I-N-G, telgeroofing.com. With that being said, uh, beginning on May 1st, that is about a month away, Texas is going to bar individuals who cannot prove they are lawfully present in the U.S. from obtaining or renewing state-issued professional licenses. It is also going to impact occupational and trade licenses. Commissioners for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation approved a new rule to check essentially the lawful presence of people applying for or renewing state licenses when they are flagged for verification. The new rule requires the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to verify an applicant's eligibility under federal immigration law when that applicant is selected for verification under department procedures, which applies to all regulated licenses. If an applicant is selected, they must submit documentation before a license can be issued or renewed. The list of acceptable documents includes real ID compliant driver licenses, not limited term or temporary, a U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate, plus qualifying driver license, U.S. military ID, Texas handgun license, and certain DHS, USCIS, or State Department of Immigration documents showing lawful presence and work authorization specifically. If the applicant does not, or say cannot provide sufficient documentation, then they may deny the application under its existing denial procedures. This also comes, of course, as last month, Paxton withdrew a 2001 legal opinion issued by then Attorney General John Cornyn that had been used to let state agencies issue occupational licenses to illegal aliens who lacked social security numbers. Paxton then issued a new opinion requiring licensing authorities to obtain social security numbers from applicants and barring agencies from accepting attestations that an applicant simply does not have one. They say that the rule is not going to create any new costs or revenue changes, so it's not like we have to start debating, well, is this worth the money that we're going to spend? It won't cost anything extra whatsoever to do this. It's already part of the stuff they can and have the ability to do. But really, this gets into the heart of this because the only real argument against this, there's only two, there's only two, right? There are only two arguments that you can even make, not even good ones, but in in existence in general, for why this updated policy is bad. There's only really two. The first, of course, is well, those who are here illegally should have the same exact rights as you or I. Because they're people too. Right? That's that's the first major argument is, well, that we don't get special treatment from our own government by nature of being Americans, which is an insane argument. We can all see how insane the argument is. It doesn't make any sense, and it's exactly opposite of what the goal of a good government is, which is to take care of its people. Right? So that's the first argument that's insane. The second and only other argument you can really make are rooted in, of course, privacy concerns. You can say, well, I don't know how I feel about requiring these things in order to get this sort of license. What about four American citizens that don't want to provide that? Well, you have to do that anyway. That's not even the question. You know, if you've ever applied for these sorts of licensing regulations, you know what that process looks like. You know what you're having to verify and prove as an American citizen. This has nothing to do with privacy. It has everything to do with the fact that if you want the thing, right? That's like having concerns. Well, I want a driver's license. I should have a right. I I shouldn't have to take a test to prove that I yes, you should. That's why we have driver's tests. Actually, you should. That's a good thing. Actually, we we have that for a reason. And in a similar fashion, yeah, if you want the licenses, you have to go through proper procedure to get them. That is how it has always worked. That's how it's going to continue to work. The only question is who should be eligible and how should we verify that they are? And I think it's totally fair to say that those who are not here lawfully, who don't have work authorization, should not be taking the licenses and the jobs from Americans. I think that is a very clear goal. I think it's a very good thing. I think it is one of the main roles of government in general to protect their own citizens from threats, which these are threats, they are foreign invasive threats to American way of life. I think it's certainly a positive that we're addressing that. With that being said, we're coming up on the last segment, uh, which means the last story of the morning. Specifically, when we get back, there's kind of a question, because of course the Texas House uh has been charged with studying the role of technology in schools as well as the impact of certain technologies on children. And so one of the big questions going around right now is could Texas remove excess technology from schools? And if so, what does that look like? We'll address that question when we get back. SPEAKER_18So as lawmakers are looking ahead to next year, they have a rare chance to ask a very simple question that most of the people in this education area dodge. Do Texas kids really learn more when every lesson is mediated by a glowing screen? New interim charges from House Leadership direct key committees to examine how technology is reshaping Texas classrooms and, by extension, reshaping Texas children. The House Public Health Committee has been ordered to study the impact of social media platforms and artificial intelligence technologies on the mental health, cognitive development, and behavioral well-being of minors in Texas. The House Public Education Committee must review the role of technology and artificial intelligence as it studies academic outcomes and enrollment trends. It's also being asked to identify emerging challenges, opportunities, and best practices and suggest ways to streamline laws and rules so districts can operate more efficiently. On paper, that's broad enough, of course, to let lawmakers kind of have their own say uh in determining the difference between genuinely useful tools and say the flood of gadgets and platforms that at best, at best, distract students, harvest data, and eat up instructional time, at worst, uh make everything significantly worse. You know, already other other countries are backing away from this sort of technology automatically makes education better claim. Right? Sweden has spent more than a decade, or had spent more than a decade, trying to replace traditional textbooks with tablets and laptops only to watch performance consistently fall, uh children's attention pans attention spans get shorter, and critical thinking skills weaken. And so uh in response, Sweden is now spending more than a hundred million dollars so that every student has a physical textbook for every single subject. Printed books, handwriting, and face-to-face discussion are being restored to the center of the classroom while screens are being demoted to more of a supporting role. Uh you also have the Texas Public Policy Foundation, who said that one estimate suggests students now spend more than twenty percent of instructional time on school-issued devices, a figure that of course grew rapidly during and following the pandemic. And so now that the emergency has passed, and of course you have more data available, research overwhelmingly shows that personal devices and constant connectivity are reducing student attention, increasing distraction and off-task behavior, and undermining academic performance, which some of us have been saying for a very, very long time. Many of us actually have been saying it, that technology has certain uses. There are benefits to technological advancement, to things getting more impressive. It's also really bad when you give it to kids. It's also really bad when rather than learning how to think critically, rather than learning how to debate and how to converse and how to be social and how to be intelligent, they outsource all of that to a computer in one way or another that unsurprisingly results in worse performance. Because technology is not a crutch. Technology is not a wheelchair, it is a tool. And it can be used for good, or when you make it your whole life, it can be used obviously for bad. And that's what we've seen. And so the house needs to work on if we're gonna have public education, it needs to be better. And one of the big ways you can make it better is by just teaching things correctly again. That'll do for the show today. Thanks everyone for tuning in. You've been listening to the Lone Star Conservative. Lord willing, I'll be back bright and early tomorrow at 6 a.m. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of your Tuesday. Telgi Tuesday. Give them a call and Godspeed.
