Supreme Court Abortion Pill Ruling And Texas Political Fallout
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The Supreme Court keeps the abortion pill mifepristone widely available while the courts fight it out, and that single move exposes a bigger truth: modern policy spreads at the speed of telehealth, the mailbox, and a pharmacy counter. We walk through what the Court actually did, why procedure matters, and why the moral and public-health consequences still feel immediate when access expands before the final ruling. If you’ve been trying to understand medication abortion, state bans, and interstate enforcement, we connect the dots in plain language.
Then we turn to Texas governance closer to home. Attorney General Ken Paxton escalates the Epic City controversy with a lawsuit alleging a Texas Open Meetings Act violation tied to a Municipal Utility District board upheaval and a major annexation attempt. We talk transparency, taxpayer impact, and why “stalling” a project is not the same as stopping it. If you follow Texas politics, Collin County development fights, or public notice rules, this segment is loaded.
Houston headlines round out the hour: downtown parking disappears as the George R. Brown Convention Center expansion begins, a Humble ISD middle school gun allegation sparks questions about lockdowns and parent notification, and school choice demand keeps surging as Texas Education Freedom Accounts expand. We also cover the TEA’s conclusion in the HISD Bel Air parental rights investigation and close with Houston’s budget gap and a proposed water system right-of-way fee transfer.

Welcome And News Rundown
SPEAKER_06The voice of Respect, Michael Wilson.
SPEAKER_10Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and we have a lot of crazy stuff to get into this morning. Kicking it off here at the top of the first hour, we're going to talk about a recent, very recent, Supreme Court decision. You might have seen this if you even saw a headline of the news yesterday. If there was a TV on, this is where I first saw it. It was on the TV while I was out to lunch with some of my family. And the Supreme Court has now restored at least a level of access to a particular type of abortion pill. And they restored it through basically every means you can obtain it. That means telehealth, mail, pharmacies, however you get your child murder pill, you can now get it. You can find this pill anywhere that you find baby murder pills regularly. The pill itself is called Milfa Pristone. And we're going to get into it. But I just want to highlight that the show today has, as we frequently do here in Texas, has a lot to go over. We've got another update coming out of Epic City, uh specifically the municipal utility district. I don't know if you guys remember this. We reported on it a couple different times, but the MUD there for the Epic City Development, they kind of I don't want to say they cheated, but they cheated. They have people on the board that were not eligible. They had this meeting that took place in some remote field, basically got everyone that was on the original MUD to resign. They put themselves on the board and then approved annexing part of the land that they needed so that they could, of course, produce all the utilities and all that sort of stuff. And so now Ken Paxton's coming out and he's sort of targeting that secret meeting, uh, alleging perhaps this open meetings violation or violations plural. Uh, we'll get into that. We also have a big update because downtown Houston has now lost over 1,400 parking spaces as we have this expansion uh into the convention center that now is finally getting underway. We've also got an update from school choice. You guys might remember they did the first round of school choice a couple weeks ago, which specifically went to those with disabilities and siblings of those with disabilities. Well, they've just now done the second round of school choice approvals. That's gone to 53,000 more Texas students who've been awarded school choice funding. This time was largely based on income, though it was still a lottery of sorts. After that, we're gonna get into this student in Umbull ISD who's been accused of bringing a gun to campus. And of course, we had quite a few of these issues over the past few, I want to say past few months. This has been a big thing. Not just in Houston specifically, but in Houston area districts, students bringing guns, they're being accidental misfires, uh, plans of school shootings. This has been a much bigger problem recently than it ever was before. And so we'll get into why that is, how we can fix it. Uh, we also have a major update coming from the Texas Education Agency. Do you guys remember when we reported? I I remember you had Denise Bell, who first attended the school board meeting where she kind of revealed all of this, and then it kind of skyrocketed. Greg Abbott called for an investigation. Uh you know, we we reported on it for weeks. Uh, not only we in the sense of Patriot Talk 920, but also writing it in an official capacity for Texas Scorecard. I reported on this. Well, the TEA has now concluded their investigation of the parental rights case at HISD's Bel Air High School. Uh, you might remember this particular debacle because the question was whether these teachers, these staff members, these employees at Bel Air High School had violated parental rights and engaged in this sort of misconduct after there were allegations that some of these staff members were essentially socially transitioning students. And so the TEA has concluded their investigation, and they have said they have found no wrongdoing. And so we'll talk about the entirety of that investigation when we get to it. We also have a big update coming out of the fact that uh voters have now approved billions of dollars in new debt here in Texas. Technically, it was Dallas ISD, which has now set the record for the largest school bond passed by voters in Texas history. And you know what? I'm glad it's Dallas because I know they wanted it to be Houston. That's why they were trying to give us a $4.4 billion bond that would have been closer to $9 billion with interest paid back over the next 30 years. I'm very glad that Dallas. Dallas can have that record, but we'll talk about what what a horrible decision that is. Um apparently Houston is also coming out and considering tapping $100 million from our own water system to essentially close this sort of hanging over our head looming budget gap that we've got going on at the Houston level. We also have the Court of Criminal Appeals, uh, it's this judge, and his finance report shows donations that were far above legal limits, specifically his campaign reported contributions to his campaign that appear to exceed limits that are intentionally set by state law to keep everybody safe and honest. And so that's that's kind of the lineup for today. There are some other stories we may get into, time permitting, but I just went through all the stories I think we're actually gonna realistically make it through. Given the pace at which we go on this show, I can't imagine we're gonna get to more than that. Realistically, we're probably not even gonna get to all of those. If I'm being completely honest with myself and with all of you guys, there's pretty much no way we make it through every single one of those stories. But we're gonna do our darndest. We're gonna get to as much as we can, which means we have to jump into
Supreme Court Restores Abortion Pill Access
SPEAKER_10this. Let's talk about the Supreme Court, because this is a bizarre decision, to say the least. I that's that's putting it as nicely and as mildly as I can. The Supreme Court just yesterday restored broad access to the abortion pill, uh, specifically Mifepristone, blocking a lower court ruling that it threatened to upend one of the main ways that abortions are provided across the nation. The order, which was ultimately signed by Justice Samuel Alito, temporarily allows women seeking abortions to obtain the pill at pharmacies or through the mail without so much as an in-person visit to the doctor. In other words, you can call a doctor that's never met you and say, Hey, you know what? I want to murder my child. And that doctor can say, I will take care of it, don't you worry, and ships you baby murder pill to your mailbox. And now I I understand that we're trying to make sure that we follow all applicable laws and constitutional rights. I just so happen to believe that that is insane. I actually happen to think that sending pills that murder babies through the mail without even going to a doctor, right? There's no sort of conversation as to the safety of the woman. There's no conversation about why this might be necessary. There's no conversation about, hey, I know you, let's talk about this. No, no, no. You're just talking to some random person that's technically a doctor who does this all the time, who makes money doing this, who's going to send you a pill to murder your child in the mail. That's that's where our country has gone. And the Supreme Court is right now saying, Oh, yeah, that's that's good. Uh those practices have been permitted for several years until rather recently, when you had a federal appeals court that imposed new restrictions. And by rather recently, I mean literally last week. So this latest order, this kind of reversal of that, is expected to remain in effect for another week while both sides respond and you have the Supreme Court considering the issue more fully. So most abortions these days have completely changed. Right? It it used to be, I'll kind of give you an example of this. When you when you wanted to get a movie 20 years ago, where were you going? Maybe you were ordering discs to your mail off of Netflix, but for the most part, many of us were going to Blockbuster. That was kind of the thing. And you know, 15 years ago, 10 years ago, where'd you go to get your movies? Okay, well, Blockbuster had sort of died out. You kind of went to Redbox. That was a big place that you went to get new movies. Okay, now Redbox has died out. Where do you get your movies now? Okay, yeah, it's all streaming. Unless you want to purchase a film, and even then you're ordering it off of Amazon or or wherever. Maybe you go to Walmart. The rare occasion where you go to Walmart to buy a movie, almost nobody does that, especially not frequently anymore. Most people are getting their movies off of streaming. That's that's most of how people are getting films and TV shows is through streaming services. In similar fashion, you know, it's it's abortion is so much more accessible and affordable than it's ever been with these abortion pills that you can receive by mail. You don't have to go through the process of having a surgery. You don't have to know that a baby's getting ripped apart. You can kind of close your eyes, hold your nose, and just take a pill and say, this will make my pregnancy end. They can and they word it that way intentionally. If I just if I just eat this one thing, uh my pregnancy will be over. It'll it'll put an early stop to pregnancy. No one wants to use the phrase, I've just murdered my baby. And so abortions are now, of course, the number one way that abortions occur. Because they're so accessible and they're so affordable. Uh the majority of all abortions are, of course, obtained through medications. And so uh some Democratic-led states have even have laws that specifically give legal protection to those who prescribe drugs via telehealth to patients in states with bans. So a good example of this: when you have a doctor in New York that ships bristone to a woman in Texas where it is illegal, and we say you can't do that, New York says, uh yeah, you and what army? New York says, well, she that doctor's under our protection. And and we're gonna continue to allow him or her to continue to ship drugs into your state. What are you gonna do about it? Now, of course, that's where the federal government should have a much bigger hand in this, even if they don't have an abortion ban, insofar as the the right of state sovereignty and and interstate commerce, they should be stopping New York from doing that. Right. That that's that's a a very big issue of a state's right to self-government. And so that that's a whole other conversation, but that's also what's going on. And so again, while we technically overturned Roe v. Wade, and it would be easy to say that was a major blessing, and it was, we're still having more abortions than at any other point in American history. It's it's still more common because of the affordability, the accessibility, and the delusionability. In other words, the ability to convince yourself this isn't murder, this is just a pill of medication-style abortions. And so even though we overturn Roe v. Wade, even though there are states that have attempted to make abortion illegal, those prescriptions, those medications have essentially blunted the impact of abortion bans in a lot of Republican-led states, uh, which have sought to enforce since 2022, since they overturned Roe v. Wade. Um, one recent report actually suggested that the 13 states where abortion is banned, more women obtained abortions with pills probably by telehealth last year than by traveling to other states. In other words, they're illegally, and I'll use that word, shipping pills into the state of Texas and others that have abortion bans. More than women are even having to travel out of state to go get abortions. They're just getting the pills to their house. And so Louisiana sued to roll back the FDA's rules on how Mifepristone can be prescribed, asserting that the policy, the prescription policy, undermines the ban that their state has. The case also questioned the safety of the drug, which is approved 25 years ago. Um, and the FDA has said, oh, it's totally safe. It's totally safe, even though we have a ton of side effects and a ton of deaths that have resulted as you know, as a result of this particular drug. And so that lawsuit is the furthest along of several lawsuits, by the way, by abortion opponents to curtail access to this particular drug. Um, and so mipristone is usually hanging with the second drug, might have heard of it, misoprostol for abortions. According to the FDA label on mifopristone, the combination completes medical abortion 97.4% of the time. And so in countries or in places where myfopristone is particularly banned, mysoprostal, the second aspect of it, is often used on its own anyway. And so all of this is going on, and I understand the Supreme Court's decision, right? I I do get it, though I think that this is extraneous circumstances that would dictate that they change their typical approach. And yeah, let me explain.
Telehealth Pills And State Enforcement
SPEAKER_10Um, to kind of explain why I'm saying I do understand why they're doing that. This is not a ruling on the merits of the case. This is not them saying that that Mivet Bristone's good, that it's totally fine, that states can't ban it, right? That none of that is happening right now. Now they're hearing arguments for it, they're gonna ultimately make that decision, but that is not the decision they made yesterday. The decision they made yesterday was essentially saying, hey, if if we allow this injunction that stops the production, that stops their ability to send it through telehealth and whatever, uh, that destroys their business. And so until we're sure that that's what we're ready to do, in the meantime, while the case proceeds, we're not gonna stop them from doing what they've been doing for years. We're we're not gonna step in their way, we're not gonna step on their toes. Now, I understand why they did that, right? I understand why the Supreme Court, that's very good most of the time for a business. If you have a business, uh regardless of what your business is, and the government says, no, that's illegal. Right. You would also hope the Supreme Court, while making a determination, would allow you to keep operating your business in the meantime, that they don't shut your business down and you go out of business while you're waiting for the lawsuit to conclude. That doesn't seem very fair. And so I'm I'm I'm saying I grant a little bit of benefit of the doubt to the Supreme Court, just because in a normal case, you'd expect them to rule kind of like this. But this is not a normal case. And so while I certainly understand the perspective of the ruling yesterday, it's still insane. Because I I I mean, I I get it. You're not supposed to import your policy bias into the Supreme Court, into the interpretation of law, right? They're not writing the laws. The Supreme Court has no authority to say, you know what, that's that's immoral. We're gonna change the law here. And so I do understand that that's not their that's not their position, that's not their job, that's not what they're they're able to do. At the same time, they certainly should produce good results. That is still part of what God's called all of us to do. Regardless of your position, your morals actually come first before anything else. And so if they're murdering children en masse by prescribing these drugs, and they're doing it with millions of abortions by prescribing it over the phone, I think you have a phenomenal opportunity to say, you know what, this is not a normal circumstance where your business will shut down. Uh, depending on the outcome of this case, we maybe decide that this is unsafe, that this is dangerous, that this is evil. And so, in the meantime, I think it would cause a level of harm should you be allowed to continue operating, a level of harm that is irreversible. And so as a result, in the meantime, there's an injunction blocking you. That's what the appeals court said. I think that was a fair determination for the appeals court to make. I think it's a little bit wild, given the conservative majority, supposed conservative majority, on the U.S. Supreme Court that they didn't do that. That they said, you know, we're gonna let you keep killing kids while we rule on this case, while we hear opening, while we hear oral argumentation and we write our opinions and we we have our dissent, while we do all of that, keep killing kids. That's totally fine with us. That is a wild decision, given that also they had to reject court precedent because the appeals court already ruled to limit the telehealth production of the drug. So they could have just kept the status quo while hearing the arguments, but no, no, for whatever reason, our Supreme Court thought enough kids aren't dying right now. We need more deaths. We need more of that. And so this is why I've said, you know, I I do believe that there are things that you can compromise on. I I do actually believe that, especially if you're gonna live in a country that is as divided as it is right now, in politics, there have to be things that to a degree you're willing to compromise on, right? I'll give you an example of this. Hypothetically, if your Democrat colleague was saying tit for tat, I'll I'll sign your bill and we'll get it passed as a bipartisan bill to deport every illegal alien. But you have to sign my bill that guarantees the same welfare funding to and subsidized housing and food stamps for the next five years. Are you signing it? Honestly, I'm probably signing it. You might say I'm crazy, uh, but I think that the the difference between you know illegal aliens in this country and five years of welfare funding is gonna be a job of the bucket. And in 50 years, you know what? I will be totally happy with that decision. And so I'm not saying that's a good thing. And I'm not saying that I want welfare funding for the next five years. What I am saying is there are a lot of issues in this country that that I think are worth compromising on in order to fix the other things. I also think there are issues that you cannot compromise on. I also think there are things that you cannot sign on to, even if they're going to give you a second, a separate benefit, tit for a tat. I think there are things that you have to say, I'm not willing to do that, even if you give me this other thing. Even if you you guarantee me the stars on this other thing that I want done, that other thing is not worth me compromising my morals. There are very few policies that I think you can never compromise on, right? There are there are very few things that I think you can look at and say, I would compromise 0% on that. There's not a ton. When it comes to foreign funding, when it comes to immigration, when it comes to most of these things, right, there's a level of we understand you can compromise a bit in order to get things passed. And I'm not saying that that's that it's always good or whatever, but I'm saying it's understandable. And in a lot of cases where it's not objectively evil, it's just, I don't think that's good use of our money. But you're going to get this other benefit that's really good for Americans. I could see it being useful. One of the things that I think you can never compromise on as a Christian, as a conservative, as someone who believes uh in traditional values at all and in the in the worth of human life, you can never compromise on abortion. That's one of those things that I am staunchly pro-life abolitionist and think we should abolish abortion entirely. I remember back during the 2024 campaign cycle when you had Donald Trump saying, Yeah, I mean, a 15-week ban is probably good. I mean, leave it up to the states, but they should do at least uh, you know, at least allow it for up to 12 to 15 weeks, right? And when Trump was was saying all this stuff, I was staunchless, and this is what I always say, like I'm not, I'm not some sort of worshiper. I said very clearly, this is wrong. This is evil. Right? He was he wanted to brag. Well, I got Roe v. Wade overturned. I'm a pro-life president. Yeah, but if you got Roe v. Wade overturned because you're pro-life, then you believe that that's a human life that you're saving. And if you believe that, why in the world would you say, let's murder him at 15 weeks so I can get more votes? I think it's awful. I think it's evil. And I think that that it's it's tough because I know that there's a level of political strategy in things, and I do get that. Um I'm going on a bit of a tangent now, but abortion is one of those issues that I think is the most heinous in our country. There are issues that are very destructive from immigration, liberalism, LGBTQ, all of these that are very destructive to our way of life and our ideologies. But abortion is one of those policies, one of those agendas, one of those one of those things that genuinely is monstrous. It it is no different than what the cultures did that we came and conquered to get this land. When you look at the Native American tribes, when you look at the the Aztecs in the Minds, and you look at the child sacrifice, we're doing the exact same thing, actually in higher numbers than the Aztecs ever did. The Aztecs would be blown away by the number of babies we kill in service to the gods of convenience and ease. And now our Supreme Court is saying, in the meantime, uh let's keep let's keep allowing this super easy, affordable, and delusional way to murder more unborn children. That's that's what's happening right now with your Supreme
Why Some Issues Cannot Compromise
SPEAKER_10Court. With that being said, when we get back in the break, we're gonna talk all about Ken Paxton now targeting this epic city up in up in Plano, particularly this time uh because of the meeting that they held where the original MUD, basically all of them on in the in the district, just resigned. Then they got replaced by these people that wanted to do this. They then annexed the land that this that the that their you know Muslim enclave sits on. And they did all of this, potentially in violation of the Open Meetings Act. So we'll talk about it when we get back. Paxton Sues Over Epic City Meeting
SPEAKER_10Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. Attorney General Ken Paxton has now filed not only an investigation, but specifically a lawsuit against the North Texas Municipal Utility District and its, I'll say, new leadership, accusing them of secretly orchestrating an illegal takeover tied to the controversial epic city development. In a filing announced yesterday, Paxton alleges that Double R Municipal Utility District No. 2A of Hunt and Collin counties violated the Texas Open Meetings Act during a September 12th, 2025 meeting, in which a new board was essentially installed and major actions were taken without proper public notice. The new filing is, by the way, a completely separate lawsuit from the lawsuit targeting the Epic City Linked MUD Board's qualifications, which resulted in a temporary restraining order and then a temporary injunction that blocked the purported directors from acting and declared their post-September twelfth actions void. So not only has he already voided any votes that they've taken, not only does he already have a temporary injunction, meaning they literally can't do anything in the position, he's now also saying on top of the fact that they're not eligible to be in there, they also violated the Texas Open Meetings Act. And so he's going after the actual meeting itself where they did all this, alleging that it violated the the TOMA, the Texas Open Meetings Act, and asked the court to formally void the annexation and bar future secret maneuvering. According to the lawsuit, the meeting, which was held in a remote field, resulted in the termination and replacement of legal counsel, the resignation of the entire existing board, and the appointment of a new slate of directors. The newly installed board also attempted to annex more than four hundred acres of land associated with the epic city development, which is, again, been rebranded to the meadow. Marketing materials originally suggested that this proposed community was intended to be exclusively for Muslims, and you don't actually need the original marketing materials to be able to tell what they're doing. I think it's very obvious if you've paid attention at all that that is exactly what's happening. That that is the entire point of the community. There is literally no other point than to be an enclave for Muslims. And the way they do this is really interesting because, as I've been saying for a long time, they're using our rights against us. They do this in a variety of ways. Uh up in the DFW, I believe, there's a water park right now that is having a Muslims-only day. And people are really up at arms about it. And there's literally nothing you can do because it is a private company that has the full right to have days dedicated to religious organizations and groups. And the Muslims are saying, wait, why are conservatives mad? I thought you guys liked religious freedom and the ability to worship and the ability to have r uh, you know, religion and religious freedom and for private companies to do what they want. You guys like freedom, right? And they're using our rights against us. They're doing the same thing here. They say, hey, we're not discriminating on the basis of religion. But we kind of are, because if you move here, some of your dues, most of your dues, are gonna go back to our Muslim school, our mosque, our worship, and our outreach. Do you want to support Muslim mosque schools, you know, in outreach and worship? No, of course not. Nobody that's not Muslim would want their money to go to that. And so, even though, even though they're saying they're saying we're not for Muslims only, we don't, you know, religiously discriminate, we're not violating the Fair Housing Act, they have essentially used the loophole of their rights to create this, assuming they're able to move forward. Now, Pacton's office contends that this particular meeting notice failed to provide adequate information to the public, obscuring both the location and the scope of the actions that were under consideration. And so the lawsuit further alleges that officials misrepresented key agenda items, including the extent of involvement with the Epic City project. In other words, no one really knew that the entire board was going to resign, be replaced, and then try to annex 400 acres of land that wasn't originally in the mud. Nobody expected that. And so Pax is in a statement this law requires transparency, especially when government entities make decisions that impact taxpayers. Epic City developers have tried to evade the law in any way possible, but I will fight to uncover and stop any illegal scheme that seeks to advance their project. So the Attorney General is seeking to void the annexation and have the court declare that the defendant's actions were unlawful under the Texas Open Meetings Act. The lawsuit also requests injunctive relief to prevent further violations. And so the case remains ongoing. There's multiple of these lawsuits. There's still investigations that have been conducted by the governor, the gubernatorial administration. There's a lot going on in the Collin County Commissioner's Court, the Hunt County Commissioner's Court. There's so many different angles.
Enclaves And Constitutional Tensions
SPEAKER_10Um the Texas Workforce Commission, which we talked about over the past couple days, all of these are different ways that were at least bare minimum stalling the development. But as I said before, my really big concern with all of this is that these are all just stall tactics. I I I don't see how these things are ultimately going to prevent the existence of the community. I see that these things are ways to stop them from existing today, tomorrow, and any time this year. But what about 10 years from now? What what's what's what's on the agenda then? Because realistically, all we're doing is stalling. Nothing that we're doing right now is in any way actually going to stop them. Okay, so they violated the Texas Open Meetings Act. That's great. The annexation cancelled. So now they have to go through the actual approval process of getting the mud. Okay, that's gonna take them a year. Great. That's one year. Okay, the Texas Workforce Commission is stalled by denying their thing without any reasoning, and it's gonna go to court. And eventually, the Texas Workforce Commission is going to have to give an answer eventually. Say it takes two years, and in two years they're ready to go. Hunt County and Collin County have both declined to allow them to build. Why though? Not because they think it's wrong, not because of any religious issues, but because the applications that were submitted were incomplete. Okay, they complete those applications because it requires approval from these other groups, it takes two years. In two years, Hunt and Collin County are very likely both going to approve the beginning of the production of these facilities. So in two to five years, everything we're stopping them on right now is going to get rectified. And you're gonna have a Muslim-only enclave. That's what's going to happen. It's inevitable. And this is why I've explained. Our constitution, I'm not saying you have to suspend it, but you're gonna have to do something. You're gonna you're gonna have to suspend the version of it that exists today because it's been rewritten. They've rewritten the Constitution to not protect Christianity while then importing people that hate Christianity. They did the it's like the worst of both outcomes. They have destroyed the original meaning of the Constitution while they've imported people that the Constitution was never intended to protect. That would never the founding fathers knew very clearly the Constitution would not work for. This is made for immoral and religious people. They did not consider Muslims to be moral people. They considered them pagans, they considered Buddhists to be pagans, they considered Hinduists to be pagans, they considered Judaism to be pagans. If you were not an explicit believer in Jesus Christ, you were a pagan. That is how the founding fathers viewed it. And so when they said, hey, this constitution is made for a moral and religious people, they're referring in that sentiment specifically to Christians. Not to Muslims, Buddhists, Hinduists, and the like. And so we've got ourselves in a catch-22 because not only we mass immigrated people of foreign pagan religions, but while we've done that, people that don't that that the constitution was not ever intended to work for, we've also basically castrated the constitution, for lack of a better word. We've castrated it. We've made it we've made it obsolete. Because you said, well, I think Muslims, we're gonna import Muslims, and they're gonna make sure that the rights that we're supposed to apply to Christians apply to them. Really? That's I mean, I mean can you really be surprised they did both of these things? Of course not. It was all part of an agenda. It was all part of the same attempt. But nonetheless, that's that's what's happened. That's what is happening. With that being said, when we get back from the record we're gonna jump over because downtown Houston is losing over 1400 parking spots as you finally have this convention center expansion getting underway, um, which is demolishing, by the way, the Avenida South Garage. We'll talk all about it when we get back from the break. If you would like to text into the show, and you can do that for a variety of reasons. You have disagreement, you think I'm crazy? You think that, you know, my comments about Muslims or about the Constitution are wrong. You want to hear more about something that I've covered or something that I haven't, the number is 713-779-5978. One more time. That is 713-779-KYST. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. I'll return in the next segment with that parking update here in Houston. So stick around and we'll be right back.

SPEAKER_18The Medicare Minute with Justin White is brought to you by Senior Health Services.
SPEAKER_02If you are of Medicare AIDS or getting close or you have a loved one that is, be careful with those unsolicited phone calls that I know you know about. We get told about them all the time. What you need to know is that many of those phone calls are not even legal. They're coming from offshore call centers. Sometimes they're calling regardless of whether you're on the do not call list. Isn't that nice of them, by the way? It's really sweet of them to just do that because they are thinking that they can't get caught. Bottom line is when you get on there and you talk to them, they're already kind of operating sidelong of what should be done. And sometimes people end up in plans that they did not intend to enroll in. And so what do you do? Call somebody local. If you got a local agent, my gosh, call them and get in front of them. And if you don't have a good agent, think of an organization like Senior Health Services where you can sit down, talk about what you're looking for, and get the help that you need. You don't need to be talking to phone operators from other countries that you don't know who they are, where they are, or what in the world they're doing.

Downtown Parking Loss And Convention Expansion
SPEAKER_10So demolition has begun on the Avenida South Parking Garage in downtown Houston, eliminating more than 1,400 parking spaces as part of a major expansion of the George R. Brown Convention Center. Now, while project leaders say the timeline is critical, some residents are, of course, raising concerns about the impacts on drivers, businesses, tourism, because 1,400 parking spots in one particular space just being gone is, I think, going to limit the amount of civic participation in that particular area. And so the Avenida South Parking Garage, which served thousands of drivers in the heart of downtown, is being torn down to make way for the convention center's expansion footprint. Project leaders say that the work had to start now in order to keep construction on schedule, that they couldn't postpone it any longer. And so Frem Reggie, the expansion project manager, said, quote, we have to start demoing this week to maintain a schedule and deliver the building in time for May of 2028. In other words, it's going to take them two years. The project will, of course, add hundreds of thousands of square feet to the convention center. We're also expecting to get a replacement garage opening sometime in September, though it's going to offer about few 400 fewer spots than the structure that is currently being demolished. So it won't be a full comeback, but it'll at least be at least a minor benefit. And so of course, a lot of residents are saying, well, we're heading into a busy summer. What's the tourism going to look like without this particular parking garage? And those are fair questions to ask. Lisa Hunt, a representative with people for Polk Street, which is one of the streets being closed during the project, which we talked about last year, says that this particular timing could be damaging to businesses. Lisa said, it's going to be cold turkey having this closure for a lot of people who live and work downtown. It's going to be a challenge. And she said, I think it's real black-eyed Houston. We want to build our reputation as a tourist destination, and I don't think this will show well. She also said, I think we're going to see some bankruptcies in the midst of this, unfortunately. Um now, to be fair, we will have about 50,000 parking spaces available across downtown, and drivers are being encouraged to find other parking, use other garages, surface lots, et cetera. And Reggie said it's just a matter of a few months gap before it's reopened. Now, again, you know, it is it is going to come back with only about a thousand spots as opposed to the fourteen hundred we had before. But four hundred spots, I I think we can make do in order to produce a much grander facility in two years. I I think that's fair, right? Give it give it four months. We'll have only four hundred fewer spaces and we'll be getting close. We can now have well in a year and a half from then, we'll be able to have a much larger, grander, you know, better spot. Speaking of you know, growing tourism, I I don't know if you could say it's worth the Money, but I think it is fair to say that the decision to increase the George R. Brown convention center, it was looked at pretty clearly and said, hey, uh, you know what? It's expensive, but it is going to drive tourism, it's going to look better, it's going to be better. Um, all this is coinciding with John Whitmeyer's plan to fix the city's homelessness crisis. Um and so this is the big plan. And you know what? I think the biggest issue is not that we're gonna lose 400 parking spots. If I'm being honest, I think there's bigger things that we have to worry about, like the spending in the midst of a budget deficit. I think that's a much bigger issue than having 400 fewer parking spaces. Now, with that being said, in the next segment, we'll be, of course, wrapping up the first hour of the show. And if you've been around, you know what that means. It means that we are going to jump into the weather report in the next segment. Houston Weather And Storm Risk
SPEAKER_10We're only four days into the month of May. Houston has already picked up more than three and a half inches of rain, one of the wettest starts to a Texas May on record. And we're expecting more rain this week. The brief break from wet weather that followed Friday's soaking rain is only going to last one more day before storm chances are expected to return late this evening. As they have a cold front approaching wind tomorrow into Thursday, a few storms could bring gusty winds or even potentially hail. Now, southerly winds have brought in a much warmer and muggier start to the day than yesterday's 57 degree low. Most neighborhoods are starting today in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees, while some of the communities along the coast might only drop into the lower or mid-70s. Breezy weather will persist through this afternoon, bringing highs between 85 and 87 degrees, with dew point temperatures near 70 degrees, which is an indicator of high levels of atmospheric moisture. The air is going to feel, of course, more humid, pushing those heated values, or what does it feel like outside temperatures, to ninety or ninety-one. Now, despite the increasingly cloudy and muggy weather, rain should hold off until really tomorrow. Now, storm channels will be highest late tomorrow, likely after the evening commute. Most morning commutes should come and go with mostly cloudy but dry weather. We are expecting a possible passing downpour between noon and four PM, but the highest storm chances are going to arrive after sunset as a weak cold front approaches from the north. Now, how many storms are going to develop? That answer is going to remain relatively uncertain because of a capping inversion that could limit the ability for storms to tap into available atmospheric instability, which is a lot of words to say we don't know because it'll be dependent upon how temperatures get warmer above the ground and act like a sort of lid on the atmosphere. Right? If if the lid gets taken off or broken or whatever, uh then the air can can warm enough to create this disturbance, which can create a cold front, rain, and it forces air to rise, creating more of that. We just don't know what's going to happen yet. And so given the warm, muggy air mass ahead of the front, a few storms that do develop could turn relatively severe. Damaging winds and hail are the most likely threats, especially North by 10. Um there is, of course, the potential for a brief tornado. We'll keep you guys updated every day this week. Storms should approach Houston late tomorrow, possibly lingering across Southeast Texas through Thursday morning. The cold front is expected to stall nearby or just offshore Thursday to Friday, keeping rain chances pretty elevated through the end of the week and going into the weekend. If you were just to like open your weather app or your website, you would probably see that on the agenda there's rain tomorrow, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and maybe even next Monday. So, of course, we'll keep you guys updated on that. That will do it for the first hour of the show. When we come back, we're gonna talk about the humble ISD student who was accused of bringing a gun to campus. Text in 713-779-5978, and we'll talk about it. When we get back, you're listening to Lone Star Conservative. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. I'll be right back at the top of the next hour. Don't go anywhere.

Pistols And Pinchers Event Details
SPEAKER_10Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. Thanks so much for being here this morning. We greatly appreciate it here at Patriot Talk 920. You know, we have a lot of stuff coming up, and I'm actually going to be, I don't want to say out of town, but I am going to be missing the event, which by the way, I still want to promote. I'm not going to be there, but that is no reason not to go. I I know, I know. It's so sad. I wanted to be there. It actually is, it is uh, you know, gonna be a great event, and I'm actually quite sad that I'm missing it. And that's our first ever pistols and pinchers event, different from the typical pistols and pizza. It'll be similar. The major difference is going to be, of course, that the Pinchers is referencing free crawfish. I believe that's for the first 100 people that show up. I I don't go on me on that. I actually should look it up because I feel like I'm gonna say first hundred people, and then it's gonna be like five people show up get crawfish, and that's it, and then everyone's gonna be mad at me for lying. I'm not lying if it's unintentional miscommunication, right? That's not lying. That's that's how politicians get away with it. Uh, nevertheless, um, that is coming up very quickly, our first ever pistols and pinchers event. And I'm very excited to tell you guys about it. It is Saturday, May 16th. So it is not this Saturday. It is next Saturday, about a week and what, four days. And so I'm going to tell you about it because it's coming up. It'll be here before you know it. You want to go ahead and make plans. That is Saturday, May 16th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at our typical pistols and pizza place that is Aegis Arms Indoor Gun Range, they're on the corner of Beltway 8 and 288. And I was correct, it is free crawfish for the first 100 adults. And uh again, uh they're gonna have, you know, Bay Area concrete and rentals with a huge tent, fans outside to keep everyone cool, 200 pounds of crawfish are gonna be cooked up. First hundred adults are gonna get two pounds of free crawfish. They're also gonna have free drinks, desserts, and pizza for people who maybe don't like crawfish, crazy, or people who don't make it in the first hundred. They will still have pizza available. Plus, all adults who attend will be entered into a raffle for one of many prizes, including the grand prize, as we do at every one of these and pistol events, which is a a firearm. And so don't miss out. It'll be a very family-friendly event, great time. Um, and of course, it's at a gun range, so you know, it'll give you a good opportunity to get out, shoot your firearm. Um and again, I I'm really I'm really sad that I won't be there, but our president and owner, Matt Velazquez, will be there. Lots of great people will be there. Uh Aegis Arms, great group of people that work at Aegis Arms as well. Food's gonna be incredible. Uh I believe the Crawfish is actually being provided uh by Crazy Allen Swamp Shack. Uh very great place. Um big friends of ours here at Patriot 920. And so I just want to go ahead and kind of bring that up so you can kind of start planning next weekend, not this upcoming weekend, so you can start getting an idea of what's coming up and go ahead and mark your calendars for being busy that day. Nevertheless, I did tease before we went to the bottom of the hour news report and break that we're gonna be talking about umble ISD. And actually, the next three stories are gonna be about ISDs. Particularly, we're gonna talk about Umble ISD, we're gonna talk about the TEA's investigation into Bel Air High School, and we're gonna talk about the school choice funding that has been released to the second round of applicants' approvals. So let's kick it off with Umble ISD.
Humble ISD Gun Allegation And Response
SPEAKER_10So Umbel ISD, uh student, this student in Umble ISD is being accused of bringing a gun. Uh he's facing a felony charge after being accused of bringing a gun to campus, and now parents are raising concerns about how the situation was handled and when they were notified. So the incident happened on Friday at the Ross Sterling Middle School. Not high school, middle school. According to the district, administrators received information at the end of the school day that there may have been a weapon on campus and immediately launched an investigation with the assistance of the Umble ISD police department. Now a search warrant was later executed at the student's home where investigators say that a gun was recovered. The student was taken into custody and is now facing a felony charge of places weapons prohibited. Under Texas law, bringing a firearm to school requires mandatory expulsion to a juvenile justice alternative education program. Now, um, a numble ISD parent says that her sixth grade daughter was among the students who saw the weapon during the eighth period ban class. Her parents said, I thought she was joking, honestly, like there's no way there was a gun on campus and no one let me know. Jefferson says her daughter and other students ran to report the incident to a teacher, but she didn't learn about it until her daughter got home from school. She and other parents say they were not officially notified until Sunday evening, nearly forty-eight hours after the incident originally occurred. And so the bus has not left yet. I feel like everything should have been locked down at that point. Jefferson says that her daughter is still shaken and afraid to return to school. And so, in a letter sent to families, Ross Sterling Middle School principal Joshua Dawson said the situation was handled appropriately and without incident. Dawson wrote, quote, safety is our highest priority. We immediately launched an investigation involving umble ISD police. Dawson said that through that investigation, a student was identified and law enforcement obtained a warrant to search the student's home where a firearm was found. Quote, evidence was presented to the Harris County District Attorney's Office. The student now faces a charge of placed weapons prohibited, which is a felony. The student was taken into police custody. The principal also emphasized that the district investigates every single tip and encouraged students and parents to report any concerns to school officials or umble ISD police. However, the Culture Commission coalition is sharply criticizing the district's response, calling it a breakdown in safety protocols. In a statement, the group said a seventh grade student brought a loaded handgun to campus and displayed it to younger students, making what they described as a threatening comment. The coalition claims that even though the school district and the principal saying it was handled appropriately without an incident, that there was no lockdown initiated, that students were sent back to class, that parents were not immediately notified, and that the armed student remained on campus, right? And and you can see this because they said, hey, we were able to get a search warrant and we've we recovered the firearm, the student is, you know, being charged with a felony. That begs the question. Well, if you needed a search warrant, that means the student was not apprehended at the school. That means the gun that was recovered at his house, he had on him for the rest of the school day. And so the statement from this coalition reads: the school failed catastrophically at every turn. The group also said it took, again, nearly 48 hours for the school to issue a statement to families and questioned why students who reported the incident were not immediately supported and protected. Uh, and so the district says it is continuing to prioritize safety and is expanding its use of weapon detection systems. According to the district, they're gonna have detection systems already in use at all high schools. Ross Sterling Middle School is scheduled to receive the same system in the 2026 to 2027 school year, and all middle schools are expected to have the systems in place by the 2027 to 2028 school year. Now, uh apparently there is a massive issue. Uh sh the this one parent and members of the Cultural Commission Coalition are planning a press conference to address their concerns and push for greater accountability. But I have a couple of directions that I want to go with this. The first major direction that I'd like to go is to talk about the failures of the school district. Because I I think catastrophic is putting it mildly. I understand that you cannot handle every situation perfectly. I also understand that hindsight is 2020. But there are things that you you don't get to say hindsight is 2020 as some sort of justification for the way you handle things. Right? If if I make a catastrophic decision, um, I come out on my show and I'm convinced all of a sudden of this is a joke, but not a joke, but th this is an example, by the way. I will never be convinced. I want to be very clear. I'll never be convinced of transgender ideology, of transgender talking points, of transgenderism as as a whole. Never, never ever. It is simply illogical, impossible, biologically incorrect. But let's say I came on the show and all of a sudden I started saying, you know, I I think I'm becoming convinced of transgender ideology. I I think that here on the Lone Star Conservative, I can see the perspective of the transgender cult. I think it makes sense. I see where they're coming from. I think it's it's fair to say that it actually does make a little bit of sense if you dive into it. And then a few weeks later, after our viewership has d just completely stagnated, after people don't want to listen to the show anymore because they say, I why would I listen to a conservative talk news host who believes in transgenderism? I'm not wanting to listen to liberal ideology. If I turn around and I say, Yeah, you know what, you guys are right, hindsight's 2020, can't believe I said that. Rightfully, people would say, hindsight's 2020. That's not how it works. You don't get to just come back and change your mind and say, Oh, it is what it is. I probably shouldn't have said that. No, you said it. You you you clearly made your beliefs evident, and no amount of, well, I shouldn't have said that hindsight's 2020 is going to change the fact that that's something that I said and something that I believed. And so, yes, hindsight's 2020. And not every situation can be handled with the utmost perfection, right? At the same time, there are certain things that a school district can say and do that are so outside the bounds of justifiable actions that you can't look at it and say, well, you know, we'll handle it better next time. You know, we're gonna put these systems in place, things will be better. It's not about the system. There was a report from a student, uh arguably multiple students, regarding there being a firearm on campus, the potential for a threatening comment, and parents didn't find out for 48 hours, the school was not sent into lockdown mode. Even on top of that, the student was not apprehended on on site. They didn't immediately contact, they say we immediately launched an investigation. Well, if you immediately launched an investigation, and the school day lasted several more hours. This was during band class. Classes were going on. Students were sent back to class, and you didn't immediately arrest the student. Even, even just, you know, some sort of we we had an investigation launched at that moment, and so we immediately made sure that the students were safe. That didn't happen. And so this is not a hindsight's 2020 sort of moment. This is, as the coalition described, evidently assuming all these allegations of what the school district handled and how they handled it, assuming that's all true, this was more than just a mere catastrophic failure. This was this was epic proportions of mistakes made. And so that's the first thing. The second thing that I wanted to discuss is the issue surrounding firearms in our schools.
Guns, Culture, And Moral Formation
SPEAKER_10Because I know that the left would have you believe that the issue is the gun, the issue is the tool. And I happen to believe that that's insane and obviously not true. Truth is often found by exploring potential options for truth and finding out which one makes sense, right? In order for it to be the case that guns are the main driver of problems, you'd have to prove that that's been the case. You'd have to show that guns have always posed this sort of threat, this sort of problem in this country. And that's unprovable because it's not true. Right? You don't have to look so very long ago to find out that guns didn't used to be a major issue of uh bringing them to school, there being danger, there being mass shootings. This is a relatively recent development. Right. Over the course of American history, young people have had access to firearms, self-defense methods and the like for a very extended period of time. Right? It used to be n again, not so very long ago. Within the past fifty years, really, probably even sooner, we have had consistent, consistently, young people have had access to firearms. You didn't even have to use you didn't even used to have laws surrounding availability and access to young people because it wasn't a concern. And you didn't have mass shootings, you didn't have these sorts of issues that were going on. Why? Because if it were the firearms, you'd expect those issues would have been there for as long as the firearms were there. For as long as students had access to those firearms, there would have been the same issue. And there wasn't. So what changed? Because it wasn't the guns. Well, I would argue. It was the culture. I would argue it was the way that young people are being raised. It was the propensity for violence being displayed among our young people. And there are a variety of reasons for that. I don't think I know that a lot of people want to say it's the Video games and the violence in the movies. I don't think that's what it is at all. I actually think that is it is uh it is far more simple than that, actually. I think that it has to do with two main factors. First and foremost, the justice system, which has failed to actively punish people and to make clear what evil is by punishing it. Young people learn from example. And when the example that you give them in the justice system is this doesn't, you know, this doesn't receive major punishment, what they learn is, well then it must not be so bad. If you're not gonna punish it, well then why would I assume that it's a really terrible thing? The second reason um is that you have abandoned moral objectivity in the pursuit of an ideology of postmodern liberalism. You've told students for years now, no, Christianity's not true. No, no, no. Religious freedom is the utmost belief. No, no, no. The the gospel is not the truth, right? You you've told students for really decades now. No, no, no, that's your truth. That's your belief system. Uh, but we all believe different things, and what you believe essentially drives what is true to you. When you teach that, when students begin to believe that, which they have, you have no viable way to say that things are good or things are evil. You say we view them that way, I view them that way, but you're allowed to view things differently. And so the result has unfortunately been that students, and this is inevitable, that students begin to believe, well then what I'm doing isn't wrong because I want to do it and I believe that it's good. And if if an individual belief drives truth, right, we were talking about transgenderism, if my belief about myself changes biological reality, then can it change moral reality too? That would be an unintentional, but potentially in it could be an intentional side effect is that students start to believe that their beliefs about anything are the true ones to them. And your opinion is bears bears little to no effect on what they believe. And so the left is busy trying to use this as a justification to take away your rights when it should be a justification to be harsher with justice, to return to a time of moral objective belief that there is such a thing as good and there is such a thing as evil, and that evil should be stopped and good should be promoted. When you take those things away, you can blame it all you want on the tool, but the tool was never the problem. It's still not the problem. The issue is the way that you handle the tool. And the issue is that you're not teaching it correctly, you're allowing them to believe that their beliefs drive reality, and then this is the result. That's also why it's very important that you become a member of our sponsor, Gun Owners of America. Gun Owners of America is well aware that your God-given rights are not contingent upon the actions of other people who are doing bad things. Right? My my rights don't get taken away because you did something bad with your rights. That's not how it works. Right? You you don't get to carry a gun into school and then say, well, because the guns were accessible to this student, well, you should never take your child to the range. Well, you should never be allowed to own a firearm either. Because this guy committed a mass shooting, it's dangerous for anyone to own a gun. No, that's not what our God-given rights are based upon. They're based upon inherent moral worth of a right. And it doesn't get taken away. Though the left tries. And that's where Gun Owners of America comes in. Because they understand that your rights are not conditioned upon the actions of other people, they cannot be stripped away from you, they cannot be infringed. Gunner of America is the only major lobby in the U.S. that truly believes in no compromise when it comes to the Second Amendment. And they play that out in a variety of ways from campaigning for candidates who believe and will defend the Second Amendment. They do that by lobbying for good bills and against bad bills. And they do that through potential lawsuits against tyrannical government regimes and tyrannical government ordinances and laws. So if you'd like to become a member, you can go to G-Oahuston.com. That is G Oahuston.com. It's a $25 annual membership, $25 per year, which goes right back to the continued defense and support of the Second Amendment. One more time. That is G-O-Ahouston.com. With that being said, when we turn from the rank, we're going to jump over. Speaking of school and the catastrophic failures inside the school system, there needs to be more alternative availability. There needs to be the ability for parents to say, you know what, I I, because of these safety failures, because of the teaching, because of the quality, because of the predatorial behavior of some teachers, all of these things combined to say, I don't really want to send my kid to a government school anymore, which is where school choice comes in. That's why in the next segment we're going to jump over and talk about school choice, because we have we have had now 53,000 more students here in Texas that have been awarded school choice income and funding. We'll talk about it when we get back. If you would like to text in the show, let us know your thoughts on anything we're covering. The number is 713-779-5978. That is 713-779 KYST. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. You are listening to the Lone Star Conservative, and we'll return to talk about school choice after the break. So hang tight, and we'll be right back.

SPEAKER_10Welcome back,
Texas School Choice Lottery Expands
SPEAKER_10ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. So more than 53,000 additional Texas students are going to receive school choice funding this week as hundreds of thousands of families continue competing for limited spots in the program. Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock announced yesterday that the latest round of Texas Education Freedom Accounts rewards will go to students in lower income households, expanding the state's first statewide school choice program in its inaugural year. The newly awarded students qualified under Tier Two, which includes families earning at or below 200% at the federal poverty level, roughly $66,000 annually for a family of four. Quote, Texas families have waited a long time for school choice, and the response to the Texas Education Freedom Account shows just how much this opportunity means to parents across our state. This first year is groundbreaking for Texas. More students will now have access to an educational path that fits their needs, and the Controller's Office is working carefully to launch this program the right way and serve families well. The latest round builds on more than 42,600 students in the program's top priority tier, students with disabilities and their siblings, who were already awarded funding last month. But demand for the program far exceeds available funding, which was set at $1 billion for the grant program's first year. According to a program update released by the Comptroller's office, more than 274,000 applications were submitted during the initial application window. Of those, more than 72,000 tier two students qualified for the lottery, and over 133,000 additional students in lower priority tiers are still awaiting placement or wait list status. Now, because funding is limited, because it's not whoever applies can qualify. As long as you're eligible, you get funding. You had to pick. Now, families receiving awards will be notified by email and must decide by July 15th whether to accept funding, enroll in a participating private school, choose a homeschool option, or opt out of the program. As families decline awards or resolve appeals, additional funding could become available to students currently on the wait list. So if you did not get accepted, if your student did not, you know, get accepted into the program, that doesn't mean that you're out. It just means you'll have to wait and see, as some families deny or or what have you. The big thing that I want to kind of hit on here as we discuss this is the reality that a lot of parents, the reason why you had such a mm really a magnificent turnout for this particular program is that parents are very upset with the available with the options that are available to them. They are sick and tired of feeling like they're put in a box where the only real option available to them based on what they pay is the public school system. Because the reality is that a lot of people, and I think a lot of times it's it's misplaced confusion about how much things cost. Uh I understand that private school for many people is unattainable. I I do get that. Private school requires a ton of extra money that a lot of parents simply don't have. Um I I am a big proponent of public of homeschooling. I think it is the most successful form of education. On top of it being educationally successful in regards to test scores, college graduation rates, uh successful careers in the workforce, on top of it being the best form education-wise, I also think it just so happens that God designed you ultimately to be your child's authority to raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord is your responsibility, not the responsibility of anybody else. And so I've long held uh that it's more than just education, but that homeschooling is the best option. And I also happen to believe that homeschooling, if done correctly, if done well, and done with intention, can be done incredibly affordably. That you don't need school choice at all. Uh that you you can you can pay your property taxes or your rent, however you know, live your life, what whatever kind of housing you're in, that you can find a way to afford to homeschool your children. I think that is entirely manageable. And I'm speaking from experience there. And so I think that a lot of parents are confused on the cost of things like homeschooling. But even if that were not the case, a lot of parents are confused. And so to them, they see it as unaffordable and and not an available option
Homeschooling Claims And Public School Pressure
SPEAKER_10to them. And so by supposed necessity, their kids are in public school. They don't want them to be, but they don't really see another option that's actually tenable, that's actually workable for them. And so for that reason, many parents that don't necessarily want their kids enrolled in the public school environment feel like they must have their kids enrolled in the public school environment. Hence why the moment you add an available application to say, hey, do you want a different option? Do you want your options to be more widespread, that you can have other ways that your children can be educated? Apply. And we nearly, if not completely, tripled the actual available slots, right? And that was in its first year. That wasn't people that learned how it worked. That wasn't people that said, oh, maybe I should apply. That was the first inaugural year. You had nearly three times the budget in terms of the number of people that applied. And the reason for that is simple. Parents want other options. I think it's very clear, it should be clear to the Texas legislature, it should be clear to the schools, it should be clear to the districts that parents aren't so happy with the we'll call it failure that is the government school system. And that's everything from education quality, test scores, to predatorial teachers, to indoctrination into things like Pride Week and Ramadan celebrations, uh, to everything in regards to really they talk all about sociability, right? They talk about how well the number one problem with homeschooling is that you don't end up very social, which again, from experience, I can tell you is simply not true if you do things the way that you should. It's not the case that you're not social, that you're antisocial, that you're incapable of holding a conversation. All right, and I've had I've highlighted it before. I was homeschooled, right? I I did not go, I was never enrolled in public school. I was in Christian school through pre-K and then was pulled out before I ever even got to kindergarten. And so my entire um education was done through homeschooling. I can promise you, if you listen to this show or you've met me at an event, I have zero issues with being social. If anything, I have issues with sometimes being overly social. And so that that is a big lie. The other issue that I've often pointed out when it comes to the social atmosphere inside the public school is that are you are you interacting with people on a daily basis? Sure. But all it teaches you is how to interact with a certain group of people. Your in-group, as I'll put it. A group of people only your age, right? This is why you'll often find public schoolers are very bad at handling job interviews. All right, that's why there has been a massive uptick in, you know, young generations who want to bring their parents to job interviews, who are nervous about scheduling a doctor's appointment, who are incapable of talking to anyone who's over their age group. They don't know how to do it, they're not capable of it because they never learned. On top of that, not only is it the age issue, but if your only social activity is with a certain caliber of person, let's say that you get in uh with the druggies at school, which are still a a very big thing, it's still a very big problem. Well, that'll impact you in negative ways. The company you keep, right? That's why a wise man surrounds himself with other wise men, right? You're not supposed to be surrounded by fools, other lest you become a fool alongside them. And that's what's happening. You have a lot of young people who are surrounded not only by only people their age, but bad people their age, who are being raised well in other capacities. And so then they're influenced negatively by their peers. And so for all those reasons, you had a ton of people who applied for school choice to the point where you're only able to accept really a third of them at most, at the maximum amount. You can only really accept a third of the ac uh applicable students. And so I I think one, this gives a big tell to the legislature that they want more funding, that we need more funding for school choice. I think it is a big tell that the government school system, that however they're running things, has been wildly unsuccessful, not just in practice, but in in the perspective of parents. That they also, the parents see that it is wildly unsuccessful, that it is not educating their students, that their students are not safe and secure and being taught well. And so that's why you had so many applications. That's why I think you're going to continue to see applications in future years. And as I highlighted back when the school choice program was initially announced, I think one of the intended side effects that will be positive will be hopefully that the public school, in order to continue to earn the same money they were earning before by necessity, is going to have to compete educationally with other forms of education. They're going to have to perform better if they say, Hey, you don't need to go to school choice, you don't need to go to a private school, you don't need to homeschool, stay with us. You have to give the parents a reason to, which means that you have to perform better. You have to provide better test scores, you have to provide better education, you have to do better on your background checks of which teachers you're allowed to teach in your district. The CEA will have to do a better job with more transparency, more availability, better investigations, right? It will fix to a degree, uh a large degree, a lot of the issues that are currently existent in the education system. It will require that if they want their money, which has always been their agenda, if they want it, then they have to provide a service that that gets that money. Right? In the same way, if you're in any industry, right? We're a radio station. You don't know what we want to do if we want to compete with other radio stations. You know how what we have to do? We have to provide some of the best shows. We have to be involved in the community. We have to be legitimate and honest and open with our viewers. We have to provide something that competes. Which is why I've come out and I said, hey, look, this show almost always is gonna be sta is gonna be statewide and local news that I'm gonna provide for for you every day from 6 to 8 a.m. Because I want to compete. Right? I I want to be someone that you desire to listen to. That you tell other people, hey, I want you to listen to this guy, I want you to listen to this. This is important for us to hear. We're getting all the news for our local issues here from a radio host here in the city that's local, right? This is why we've selected the lineup that we have here at our station, because we want to compete. We want to provide you a service that is worth your time. In similar fashion, the public school system wants to succeed with the advent of school choice and the application windows, they're gonna have to do a better job. And so I think it drives success all across the board. Now, speaking of success or maybe lack thereof, let's talk in the next segment about the TEA, the Texas Education Agency, which has now concluded their investigation of the potential parental rights violations at HISE's Bel Air High School in regards to the alleged social transitioning of a student at Bel Air High School, where the TEA unfortunately found no wrongdoing, which if you remember the story, which we'll cover the background of in the next segment, you'll be I don't want to say shocked because I think people know, right? I think people are aware that these issues exist and that this was ultimately gonna be the outcome. Uh, but that you're going to be in a bad way, sort of, I don't want to say surprised, but unpleasantly unsurprised at this outcome. If you let's text into the show, the number is 713-779-5978. One more time. That is 713-779-KYST. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and I'll return with the TEA's concluded investigation after the break. Hang tight. We'll be right back.

SPEAKER_18The Medicare Minute with Justin White is brought to you by Senior Health Services.
SPEAKER_02If you are of Medicare age or getting close or you have a loved one that is, be careful with those unsolicited phone calls that I know you know about.

TEA Closes Bel Air Parental Rights Case
SPEAKER_10So the Texas Education Agency did not find any wrongdoing at the district level in an investigation ordered by Governor Greg Abbott into whether HISD employees at Bel Air High School violated parents' rights. In March of last year, this happened again, over a year ago, Abbott originally said that he asked the TEA to investigate whether employees at Bel Air High School had engaged in misconduct or whether the school had violated any state policies after a local Moms for Liberty chapter, led by Denise Bell, alleged the teachers had been socially transitioning a student. In that video, the chair of the AirScounty chapter of Moms for Liberty said during an HISD school board meeting that an anonymous HISD mother was shocked to learn that teachers at Bel Air had been calling their child by a different name and pronouns. The TEA investigated whether the district had violated parents' rights under the Texas Education Code, which states that parents are entitled to full information about the school activities of their child. It also notes that any attempt by an employee to encourage a child to withhold information from their parents is grounds for discipline. So in a March letter to the state superintendent, Mike Miles, and the board president, Rick Campo, uh the TEA said the investigation had closed in October and there would be no further investigative actions. Quote, based on the available evidence, the investigation did not result in a finding of district level wrongdoing or identify violations of provisions in the text education code in effect during the period under review. That came from the TEA's division director of special investigations, Richard Segovia. And so the TEA released the letter to Miles and Campo this week after it was requested through public records. The TEA and HISD did not respond to any requests for comment, but in his letter last year calling for the investigation, Abbott wrote that schools should not promote distorted notions of human biology or push children further into gender dysphoria. He said that all students deserve a quality education without efforts to defy basic biology and endangered children. He said, quote, if the allegations against Baylor High School are true, then these parental guarantees have been grossly violated. No parents should have to endure such treatment. And this is another example of why I have long championed school choice in Texas. And so the investigation's closure comes again nearly a year after Texas State Lawmakers passed in a Bill 12, which prohibits teachers from using student preferred names and pronouns in school if they don't conform with a student's sex given at birth. Segovia wrote that SB 12 did not apply in this case because it took effect after the conduct in question, that the agency has advised school districts to comply with all requirements of the law consistent with any applicable court rulings. And so Abbott spokesman Andrew Malaris said in a statement, quote, Governor Abbott was clear no school should be involved in transitioning a child. The governor was proud to ban this radical practice last year, ensuring that Texas educators cannot indoctrinate impressionable children into making irreversible medical decisions. Now, due to a federal judge's preliminary injunction, HISD and two other school districts are temporarily blocked from enforcing parts of SB 12, including the section barring staff from referring to students with names or pronouns that are not assigned at birth. However, after the parents of Bel Air of the Bel Air students sued the district, HISD agreed to direct all employees at Bel Air High School to address their child in this case only by their given name and female pronouns while they are a minor. So even though the district is blocked from enforcing this at a district-wide level, for this particular student at least, there's a good outcome that this daughter, which is what she is, will be referred to as she, because she is a she and she should be referred to as the thing that she is, which is a she. I want to be very clear. It is a her, not an it, not a they, not a him, it is a her. And that's how she should be referred to because that's biologically accurate. But again, this is the sort of stuff that's going in our public schools. You have to wonder why are parents so fed up? Is it just because their kids aren't being educated? Yes. Is it just because their kids are being taken advantage of? Yes. Is it just because there are terrible policies in place that are allowing for their kids uh to be preterized against by teachers? Yes. Is it because background checks aren't being conducted efficiently, well, and accurately by school districts? Yes. Is it also because of this style of woke indoctrination that is poisoning the minds of young people? The answer again is yes. Parents are not dumb. They're not asleep, they know what's happening. It's very clear, it's very evident. And so while we're talking about all these upgrades and and what have you, we have a case where you're still looking at the at the downpouring effects of the woke that has invaded our institutions. Where even though this is very clearly wrong in a violation of parental rights, the TEA said, well, there wasn't a specific law for it, so I guess we can't do anything. So we passed a law for it. So now you can't, even though, okay, we'll we'll move on. Hindsight's 2020, we should have had the law before. It's an insane law to have to have, but we have it now. So I guess we can't go after HISD for what they did before the the law was passed, right? It's not retroactive in that way. But hopefully, moving forward, it works. Not quite because we have an injunction saying that HISD still can't enforce that policy district wide as that lawsuit continues. And so pending the outcome of that lawsuit, hopefully that shifts dramatically. Hopefully, we see the the reality that these people are held accountable, that our students are not socially transitioned behind the parents' backs. They shouldn't be socially transitioned anyway. Even if a parent wanted their child to be socially transitioned, there should actually be a law that says no, your parental rights actually don't extend so far into requiring that that teachers violate what is true. That actually, if a parent came in and said, Hey, I want you to teach my child, if I if I came in as a as a parent and said, I want you to teach my child that the earth is six to seven thousand years old, I would not be indulged. I don't get to decide how the school educates. That's why, that's one of the main reasons that I'm not willing to enroll my child in a public school ever. That's part of it, is because I don't have control over the curriculum. And yet, and yet they're saying, Oh, but oh, but we if we want to socially transition them, we'll do that. That that's up to up. No, it isn't. This is insane that this is even a conversation we're having to have because of the cultural epidemic that's facing our country. Uh, but just to highlight again, the TEA found no wrongdoing, and that's where the case stands. That's where it lands. That'll do it for this segment of the show. When we get back, we will be wrapping up the show by talking about how the city of Houston is now discussing potentially tapping $100 million from our own water system in order to help close this looming budget gap that we have. The money would come from a system funded by ratepayers, even though the city says that it does not currently plan to raise rates as a part of this proposal. We'll discuss what all that looks like when we get back. As always, if you'd like to text in, it's the final opportunity. The number is 713-779-5978. That is 713-779-KYST. Houston Water Fund Transfer Plan
SPEAKER_10Houston's own independent water system never has. Now, Mayor John Whitmeyer's administration wants to change that, proposing a new fee that could generate roughly $104 million per year. And so Stephen David, he's the deputy chief of staff for Mayor John Whitmeyer, said center points a utility and they pay a right-of-way fee. A and ATT, Comcast, they pay right-of-way fees. We have never made our wastewater and sewer utility be accountable to the same right-of-way occupancy rental fee into the general fund. And so David says his team found internal memos going back more than two decades recommending that move. He said state law allows it, other cities do it, and we just never have. We can't figure out why we never have. And so the plan would charge the water and sewer system five percent of its gross revenue, similar to what other utilities already pay to use the city right-of-way. At five percent, the fee would generate roughly $104 million a year. David said that percentage is chosen carefully, says that San Antonio's water system charges four percent, Dallas charges six. What Houston is proposing will land in the middle, and it's before the administration believes the Texas legislature will likely regulate these fees in the upcoming session. And so David argues that this is not new money coming out of any resident's pocket. He said the transfer to the right-of-way is money that Houstonians have already paid the city. We're not pulling money out of them. We're going to increase, we're not going to increase these fees. It's pulling our own money back to ourself. But the money would still come from a system that is ultimately funded by ratepayers. He said the water and sewer utility is a different entity. It is technically a part of the city of Houston, but by law, it is a separate entity. It's a lockbox, meaning it is rate funded fund. We cannot just transfer money out of there. We have to have a legitimate business reason. And so he said the right of wave fee is that sort of, I don't want to say loophole, but that sort of decision. David pointed to the utility's financial cushion. Right now the system holds about 550 days of operating revenue, well above its 300-day policy requirement, and its debt coverage ratio sits at 215% against the required 120%. And so he said we have unutilized liquidity. Basically, it's just sitting there. And so Houston is facing a projected $381 million budget gap in fiscal year 2029, growing to a potential $446 million gap next year. And so David said, I can close a $100 million budget gap. I cannot find $381 million, and that's the problem. And so city leaders believe this proposal, combined with a separate effort to add a solid waste administrative fee for trash collection, would significantly reduce those deficits. He said, What this does is it basically hits in a permanent way a reset button. He said that the property taxes would not go up. And so one of the things that I want to say as we wrap up the show here is twofold. We'll have to see if it's actually true that we're not going to get you know more money is going to have to be paid in. I have a feeling that's exactly what's going to happen. They're going to justify it, and then in five years, oh man, our rates went up. What a shocker. The other issue I have is you're doing, again, stalling tactics. Okay, it is closes $100 million. What about in 10 years when you're up to $700 million you need to close? What then? Until you fix the issue, which is not the money coming in, but the spending, nothing's gonna
