From Austin Shootings To Lottery Rigging In Texas
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A “random” shooting spree in Austin, an abortion-pill indictment in Montgomery County, smart glasses that may see more than you think, and a lottery jackpot that looks less like luck and more like a system being gamed. That’s the thread we pull today, because every one of these stories points to the same question: what happens when institutions stop acting like they’re accountable to the public?
We start with a juvenile crime wave in Austin and use it to talk plainly about probation, bond failures, deterrence, and the limits of a criminal justice system that promises rehabilitation but often can’t deliver either safety or reform. From there we cover a first-degree felony abortion charge alleging a man secretly spiked his pregnant girlfriend’s drink with pills ordered online, and why the internet makes enforcement harder even when the law is clear.
Then we turn to privacy, as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton investigates Meta AI glasses over claims about data processing, subcontractor access, and the potential for facial recognition. After the weather and flood risks, Briscoe Cain joins us to talk early voting, grassroots representation, and what it means to be accountable to the people who actually live in your district. Finally, Texas Scorecard’s Daniel Greer walks us through the Texas Lottery scandal, including courier loopholes, indictment drama, and why the story may expand beyond Texas.

Welcome And Guest Lineup
SPEAKER_14Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. It is good to be with you this morning. I mentioned yesterday, I didn't have enough time really to dive into it, but I mentioned yesterday we're gonna have some exciting guests on the show today, which we are. We have rescheduled Texas scorecard for the 730 segment. So we'll have Daniel Greer on to keep us updated, let us know everything that's going on with the lottery right now. Particularly, there's been a lot of indictments, drop charges, re-indictments, a whole slew of messes with in regards to the lottery and the people in charge of the lottery. And so we'll have Texas Scorecard Daniel Greer on to go over all the stuff happening uh in that system, how bad it's gotten. At 7 o'clock, so about 30 minutes earlier, at 7 o'clock, we're gonna have Briscoe Kane on uh on the show, which will be a good time. Uh we're gonna talk about kind of how the how the race is going, the candidacy, all that sort of stuff that you guys will want to hear, especially with early voting kind of coming to an end. And for those who didn't, you know, get out to early vote, making your decisions come Tuesday, May 26th. A lot of our listeners, you know, live out in that area, so making sure that you're making wise decisions, all that sort of stuff. We like to present those opportunities. With that being said, before we get to 7 o'clock and 7.30, we as always do have a lot of stories to get into. And I actually want to get off talking a little bit about Austin.
Austin Juvenile Shooting Spree
SPEAKER_14Uh, and this is gonna this is gonna come kind of as a surprise. Uh nobody likes Austin, and nobody wants to talk about Austin. And anything that comes out of Austin generally, we kind of all look at it and simultaneously agree that it's not really a surprise. If ever you have a story that has to do with pride or I mean any sort of degenerate content. Anything that you have that comes out and it's a headline, if it's anywhere else, if you have a headline that comes out of Houston or the great anywhere in the greater Houston area, comes out of Fort Worth or anywhere in that area, you look at it and you go, wow, that really happened. Things have gotten so bad. But you you see the same headlines out of Austin, you go, of course that happened in Austin. I mean, who are we kidding? We we expect that to come out of Austin. Uh this is not the quite the same, I mean, maybe you do expect it out of Austin. Uh this seems a little a little much even for them. Uh apparently the shooting spree suspect, Christian Mondragon, Mondragon, however you pronounce his name, he is facing six felonies after a two-day crime spree that ended up injuring four different people. He's 17 years old. Uh, and he was arrested in connection with a weekend shooting rampage across Austin that left four people injured. And so that that's already kind of enough for us to look at it and say, wow, what does the world come to you of a 17-year-old that's doing a multi-day terror campaign? Absolutely insane. Uh, he appeared in court day before yesterday, where prosecutors revealed some extra information. So, on top of, of course, being 17 years old and going out and committing this multi-day crime spree, uh, it turns out he's also not a U.S. citizen and has an active ice hold. He was also on probation through the juvenile justice system at the time of his arrest and as a juvenile detainer as well. Turns out even juvenile bonds don't work. It's not just adult bonds you gotta worry about. Uh, it turns out that that the bond system is just broken at every level, at every age. Nevertheless, this is gonna get kind of get into some some stuff that I've been wanting to talk about. Austin Police arrested three suspects, this guy who's 17, and two additional juveniles, aged 15 and 16, arrested in connection with 12 separate shooting incidents that occurred between Saturday, May 16th and Sunday, May 17th of last weekend. Now the shooting spree again injured four people, including one victim who remains in critical condition at a trauma center. The violent crime wave also struck five vehicles, four homes, two Austin fire department stations, and three fire trucks. Police say that the suspect stole at least five vehicles during the spree and may have switched between the vehicles multiple times. Mondragon has been charged with six felonies, including two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, two counts of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, theft of firearms, and evading arrest with a motor vehicle. He is now being held without bond, though even if he were given a bond, the ice detainer would still hold him. To be, I mean, it's so it would be a useless offer. It would be a waste of time to even come up with a bond, offer it, him try to it would just be a mess for no reason because he's gonna stay, anyways. According to authorities, Mondragon had an active warrant for stealing a firearm from the same store where the 15-year-old suspect allegedly stole another gun on Saturday. The two younger students uh suspects, of course, they've not identified them due to the fact that they're 15 and 16. They guess they view that as young enough of a juvenile to not report their names. Nevertheless, Austin police chief Lisa Davis said an investigators believe the incidents were a combination of random and targeted shootings with some victims known to the suspects. Law enforcement officials stated they do not believe there is an ongoing public threat, mainly because they've arrested the suspects. And the investigation remains, of course, ongoing as they get process evidence and all that sort of stuff.
Probation Failures And Immigration Debate
SPEAKER_14But the reason that I think this story is so worthy of discussing on the show is that we have to understand a few things. First and foremost, I think this highlights yet again that our whatever we're doing, whatever it is that we're attempting to do in our criminal justice system, whether that's for young people that have arguably a whole life ahead of them, if they get their act together, whatever it is that we're doing is not working. Even if even if you believe in the theory of what we want to do, even if you believe that justice should not be a punishment, that it it should ultimately be with the design to rehabilitate people, even if you believe that, there's no way to look at the modern criminal justice system and walk away thinking anything other than the fact that it is an abysmal failure in that regard. There's just no way. Whether you look at the stories, whether you look at the statistics, or whether you just talk to people who get out or people that are in, you have to be aware what's happening in our criminal justice system at large, nationwide, by the way, this is not just a Houston issue or an Austin issue or a Texas issue. This is a nationwide issue because of the way that we formatted all of this stuff. It's not working. It's by any metric wildly unsuccessful. And so that's also true, by the way, of young people, which is even more devastating. Because again, I absolutely happen to believe that in many cases justice, it's not that it's goal from the the the sense of the actual judge or or whoever is to rehabilitate people, but it is by nature often rehabilitative. Justice, while being punitive, often has downpouring effects. Because God designed it that way. It's the same as you know when a child gets a spanking or or whatever, whatever the case may be. A lot of times, yeah, it's punitive. Yeah, it's kind of a punishment of sorts, but it's just, it's discipline. And it often results in better actions. It often results in them becoming better, being rehabilitated, right? And the same theory, by the way, the same thing applies as Christians. We hear it often in scripture that that God talks about chastising us. What do you think that means? It's like taking out the big battle, right? And so we have to understand that that our justice system has traded justice for not only traded justice for rehabilitation, which would be bad enough, but we traded justice for rehabilitation, and we traded it for a failing version that doesn't even work of rehabilitation. And you almost, when you when you look at stories like this one, you almost have a level of of I don't want to say despair, but on top of for all the victims, and I'm not saying that we have you know empathy for the criminals because I don't believe that. Um but there is an understanding that when you look at a lot of these criminals, in this case particularly, you have young people, 15, 16, 17 years old, that should have, you know, fathers present in their lives, teaching them what it is to be a man, teaching them what is good and what is evil, teaching them how to act. And they obviously don't have that sort of presence in their life. That's that's very obvious. And and the reality is the result of that is that they're committing these crimes from a very young age. And unfortunately, because our justice system is not focused on justice, the odds are not in their favor that they're going to be ultimately rehabilitated. The odds are that whatever we do with them is not gonna create a successful fix. Of course, that's not our job, anyways, because they're not actually I mean, we don't know about the 15 to 16-year-old, but at least the 17-year-old is is not an American citizen, is not a citizen of the U.S. And so again, uh let me highlight for a moment, you know, a lot of the claims from the left have consistently, when it comes to immigration, been, well, even if they can get behind some of the deportations or some of the, you know, whatever, they'll look at young people especially, they'll say, well, they're young, they've been here a long time, they they can stay, right? That's that's fine. Let's grant amnesty, right? That's a you know often touted desire for this group. And I say, no, I mean, if you're here illegally, you should go, you should get out. I actually I actually think that if you broke the law to get here, regardless of your age, I get it, you know, if you were ten years old, you didn't you you weren't actively choosing to break the law. Your parents were, uh, but you still can't be here. If you're if your parents steal you a private jet when you're ten and you get used to flying around on it when you're 20 years old, that's your main mode of transportation. And that gets seized because it turns out that that's a billionaire's private jet, you stole it. Even if you don't get in trouble for it, you still don't get to keep the jet. So even if we don't punish, you know, these guys, these young guys worse, deportation, I think, is the bare minimum response to people that are in this country without citizenship. Nevertheless, in this case, I think it goes further than that because you do see a lot of these crimes that have been committed. Um, a lot of these, I guess no one's dead. Uh praise be to God. It just appears like these are these are injuries, and uh there's one person that's in critical condition, but everybody else seems relatively fine. On top of, of course, the motor vehicle thefts and what have you. And this is gonna be a tough conversation for the system because we're gonna have to we're gonna have to have some level of, well, these are still underage people. Is justice going to look different for them? Is he gonna be charged as an adult? Because they can do that once you're 17. Will he be charged as an adult? What will that look like? How is that gonna go hand in hand with the plans to deport him after he serves that? All that sort of stuff. I think realistically, by the way, best outcome is a combination of things. Best outcome uh is probably some sort of hard work slash restitution and then immediate deportation. Um maybe a couple years working real hard manual labor, and then we're like, all right, bye-bye. You you learned your lesson, good, go home. And we send him back. We I actually don't know. Uh I don't think they're saying, I guess part of the juvenile thing is that we don't have all the details. I've not heard what country he's from. I don't know if it's Mexico. Anybody guess based on the name Mondragon? Christian Fajardo Mundragon. I have no idea. And looking at this picture, I I don't want to sound, you know, like a bad person, but I I could not tell you what country he's from. Uh uh somewhere south, I think, is what it looks like. But I I don't know. I don't know where. I don't know what country. I'm not even gonna try to guess what country. Whatever country it is, I think the end result is that he must go back, just like all of the other people that are here illegally. All of them. I I'm I'm sick and tired of this debate where we say, well, you know, maybe the ones that are working, maybe the ones that are just kind of trying to provide a better life, maybe some of them should get to No. I get it. A lot of people want a better life, right? I yeah, you know, I can sit around all day and we can all complain about what we have and how much we want more. Where we all, by the way, have the option to be discontent with the life that God's given us. And we all, by the way, have the opportunity to sin and break the law to fix it. But a lot of us don't do that. And if we do, we deserve to face justice for it. If I say, hey, I'm discontent with my status in life, I don't like where God put me, I don't like what he gave me, sure, can I try to go rob a bank? Yeah. Yeah, I could certainly do that. And I could I could pretend as though I should get away with it because I'm just trying to provide a better life for my family. But you can use that as an excuse for any crime you could ever commit. And whatever the crime is, it's not justifiable because you broke the law. And when you come into this country in an improper manner and you're not allowed to be here, the automatic proportional response to that is that you go home. And I mean, it's it's especially crazy because now we're offering them ways out, and we have been for a while now under the Trump administration. We're offering you a free flight home with money attached, and you're left with the option one day to return. Which I I mean that's more gracious than I'd ever be. And if you end up getting caught and deported, you're basically you I think they take your name off the ever eligible for citizenship list. You're done. You can't come back. Which, by the way, they should take everyone's name off that list. If you're not already legally present, we have enough people here. Thank you. I we do not need more. I think if you look around and you see the number of mosques that have popped up, the number of I I mean, any religious institution that is not a church, if you look at the number of them, the Buddhist temples and the Hinduist temples and the demon pagan statues on the side of the highways, we got enough of that. Um we have enough of the murderers and gangsters and drug dealers and traffickers. We don't actually need any more. And as I mentioned before, immigration at one point in American history had its uses. It has now outrun those. We have we have got enough immigrants for the next 300 years. And that's and that's we'd have enough immigrants for the next 300 years if we deported half of the half of the people who became citizens. I mean, it's it's absolutely insane. They have they have outrun their usefulness, I'll say. We we understand the original point of immigration. Hey, we need a little bit of help working on, you know, we got the railroad, we got the industrial revolution, you want to give us some aid? Sure. We don't have those issues. We are fully capable, fully competent, and we've got plenty of people. And so all of these people uh that are committing these crimes, and thank goodness, again, that no one died, right? Because this could have been a significantly different story had someone died, and I guess there's still that option on the table. Uh, we'll be praying, of course, for the individual who's who's in critical condition at the hospital. But this could all be prevented by having good, normal policy. Not even, you know, some sort of crazy what would be considered radical policy, like I'm saying. Like I'm saying you need to denaturalize people. That's pretty radical. Okay, that's not your mainstream Republican view, though it's not as unpopular as it would have been five years ago. It's not as unpopular as it would have been ten years ago. You know, there's a rise of real conservativism back on the right again, where we're allowed to say those sorts of things and say, hey, I know there's a law right now, then we need to change the law. That's fine. Laws are allowed to change to fit the needs of a specific people in a specific time. And the laws right now are not catering to the American people, so we have to change them. Right? That that's that's making a return of our of our ability to do that. But what I'm kind of trying to get at here is, you know, you look around and you think about everything that's going on. You think about the way that things have been taken over by these institutions and what have you. And we gotta wake up. And and we have to understand, you know, this is not what our country should look like. This is not what our country should be. Our country should be something better. It should be something grander, it should be something greater, and it can be, again. But it again, as I always like to highlight, because I don't want to I don't want to convince anyone that this is just on the table, we can just do it tomorrow. It's going to be hard. It is going to be difficult. It is going to be time consuming. I don't mean time consuming like give me give me a couple of hours a week. I mean give up the rest of your life to fighting for this. And maybe, maybe your great grandkids will see it come to fruition. And, you know, a lot of for a lot of people, especially nowadays, that are so entrenched in instant gratification, that concept is is impossible for them. They just they just can't believe it. What do you mean I'm not going to see the results? Not only do I do I need to see the results by the time I I see the results today. And if I don't, I'm going to give up on this thing. Happens all the time. Between social media and entertainment and and career options and college, the way that everything's been changed by AI, instant gratification is the currency of the day. And so when I mention things that are going to be a years, decades, generation long fight, I know that scares some people. I know that's kind of a moment where a lot of people say, I don't know about that one. Uh, you know, that seems that's a long time, Michael. That's that's not, you know, it's not a short little commitment. That's no, it's not. But much greater men who came before me put in much more effort than me for much greater results than I'll ever achieve. And when I look back at a lot of what, I mean, not even just our shared heritage, but even just my own ancestors. When you look back at just what your own history looks like and what the history of your country looks like and where your country came from, and you look at all of that and you see the effort and the life they put in and and and you look at the context, because this is I mean, we have hindsight, right? We can look back and say, yeah, of course they won. Yeah, in a lot of these cases, they didn't think they were going to. In a lot of these cases, you know, they had no idea what was gonna happen. They just did what they could. And we're in the exact same boat. Except we actually have it easier. And so who are we to turn that down uh in in fear and in worry and in some sort of some sort of, you know, concern that we don't have the time, concern that we may not win, concerned that, you know, we maybe maybe we won't succeed as much as we want to today. Well, you know what? That's okay. Because I happen to believe in Providence, I happen to believe in listeners of this station, I happen to believe uh in Christians, in Americans, in those who built this country, and I happen to believe that God will sustain us, especially if we're willing to stand up
A Man Accused Of Forced Abortion
SPEAKER_14and fight for it. With that being said, when we get back, we're gonna talk all about Montgomery County, which may be the first indictment like it in the state of Texas. Specifically, this man is accused of spiking his pregnant girlfriend's drink with an abortion bill. His name is John Demeter, and he's now being charged with first degree felony abortion and injury to a child. We'll talk about it when we get back. As always, if you'd like to text us in the show, the number is 713-779-5978. That is 713-779-KYST. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. And Lord willing, I'll be right back to talk all about this indictment after this short break. So hang tight and we'll talk soon.

SPEAKER_13The Medicare Minute with Justin White is brought to you by Senior Health Services.
SPEAKER_00If you are of Medicare age or getting close or you have a loved one that is, be careful with those unsolicited phone calls that I know you know about. We get told about them all the time. What you need to know is that many of those phone calls are not even legal. They're coming from offshore call centers. Sometimes they're calling regardless of whether you're on the do not call list. Isn't that nice of them, by the way? It's really sweet of them to just do that because they are thinking that they can't get caught. Bottom line is when you get on there and you talk to them, they're already kind of operating sidelong of what should be done. And sometimes people end up in plans that they did not intend to enroll in. And so what do you do? Call somebody local. If you got a local agent, my gosh, call them and get in front of them. And if you don't have a good agent, think of an organization like Senior Health Services where you can sit down, talk about what you're looking for, and get the help that you need. You don't need to be talking to phone operators from other countries that you don't know who they are, where they are, or what in the world they're doing.

SPEAKER_14A grand jury this week indicted John Demeter on a first degree abortion charge, which carries a possible sentence of up to life in prison. He noted Demeter had no connection to the medical profession and no license, unlike the Eustinaria midwife who had uh arrested last year for allegedly performing illegal abortions. They're arguing it is completely different circumstances because of her connection to the medical industry. The fact that, you know, whether or not you know she was she was practicing or not practicing, or had people on her staff that were the unlicensed and whether or not she was communicating the full side effect list, right? Those are all issues, but they're not kind of the same case. And so investigators allege that this guy ordered a pill online, crushed up a white pill, and slept it into a drink before insisting that his girlfriend consume it all. According to a search warrant affidavit, the woman told investigators the drink tasted bitter and fizzy. The affidavit states within hours she went to the hospital cramping and bleeding and later delivered the the the baby. Investigators say the pregnancy was about fourteen weeks long and the unborn child did not survive. Uh and they even named the unborn girl, which I mean, of course, forms a very deep connection between, especially a mother and a child, unbelievable. And so the DA said it has never been lawful for someone to perform an abortion in the manner against a woman and against her consent of this nature. If someone's considering doing this, they should think twice, especially if they're in our county. Holly said an investigation continues with the Texas Attorney General's office related to the website where Demeter allegedly admitted to buying the pills, although the avenue indicates he told investigators he gave the pills away and didn't put them in her drink. He he literally admits Okay, yeah, I bought them. And yeah, I made her drink this random drink, and then she was bleeding and delivered the baby, which is what the medication that I ordered would do. But I promise you, I didn't give her the medicine. I mean, does anybody believe that? I understand we have due process, we have presumption of innocence, but um I can presume your innocence while also knowing you're telling a big fat lie up on there. Nevertheless, uh Wesley Doolittle, the Montgomery County Sheriff, kind of also came out kind of speaking about the case. He said a couple things he said she had ten fingers and ten toes. She was developed about 14 weeks along. Her future was stolen before it ever had a chance to begin. And so Texas Law, again, as always, we've highlighted this under the new law. I know that the the the right-wingers would like to tell you that that, you know, there's no abortions going on, which we know is not true. And the people on the left would like to tell you that there's no exceptions to the rule. And I'm not talking about exceptions for, you know, the the the typical claims of of sexual assault or or incestuous relationships. I'm talking about exceptions, exemptions for the procedure that aren't actually abortions. Right. If you've miscarried, or in a case of the the the threat of life to the mother, those sorts of narrow exemptions exist. Right. Uh when done by a medical professional for a medical reason, like saving the life of the woman uh or preventing some sort of major impairment, those those sorts of those sorts of things are still allowed under Texas law. And so it's still pretty balanced legislatively, I think in a way that works for our state. Um but of course he's been held without bond since his arrest, which happened, by the way, all the way back in February, uh, when he was initially charged. Since he's now been indicted on new charges, which are eligible for bonds, the DA's office said a judge could set a bond when he returns to court this afternoon. Uh so we'll have to see what they do there. But I mean again, this highlights uh a few major issues. I think the biggest one, arguably, is that these are available online to just order.
Online Pills And Punitive Justice
SPEAKER_14These are available online that anyone can just go buy them. And every time you shut down a website, you got another one. It reminds you of the the old days when the dark web was way more popular. Every kid wanted to get on the dark web. And it's it was not hard. Uh you just had to download a certain app and a certain kind of browser, and you could get on the dark web. It was a big thing back in the in the 2000s. And you felt like a hacker when you did it. But there was there was stuff that was normal and there was stuff that was illegal on there. You could you could just there were websites that you just you'd open the website and be like, boom, you could order, you could order drugs to your house. I you know, you never did it, but you you kind of thought, well, is Hibband gonna come to your house if you order them, or are they actually just gonna ship you cocaine? You gotta wonder. And so it's kind of the same thing here, where every time that the FBI would shut down any sort of drug deal or whatever, another one pops up. And so you have to be very diligent. I'm not saying that you should just give up and not even try. Uh but when it comes to a lot of these things, this is why severe justice is really important. Punitive justice is really important. Because if all you're doing is shutting the website down and somebody gets a slap on the wrist for having opened it, nothing's gonna change. Because somebody else, maybe even the same person is just gonna open another website till you find that one and then they'll keep doing that and so on and so forth, unless people are actually receiving justice. In which case, hey, maybe people will stop opening up the websites. Maybe they'll stop shipping these these pills into states where this is illegal. And to this guy, uh, should he be convicted, this is insane. But it's it's really no more insane than any abortion. I know that they're saying, well, it's never been legal to do it like this. I understand that. And I guess you could say there's a small extra layer because she didn't consent to it. But the biggest issue of this case is that you murdered a baby. And whether the woman decides to do it or the man decides to do it, right? Because there are plenty of women who have murdered their unborn child and not gotten the consent of its father, that's happened I mean, millions of times. Millions of times. Sometimes they don't even tell the father they were pregnant when they go get the abortion. And so whether you whether you murder a child with without the consent of the father or without the consent of the mother, I'm not saying it's irrelevant. But the biggest issue is that we're in a country where it's become defensible to murder, literally to murder children. And that's I mean, it's disgusting. It's the largest genocide arguably in world history, what we've done with the abortion industry. And I mean, at the end of the day, I think it's I think it's very important that we we understand what's happening in our country so we can take steps to fix it. Uh and a lot of that in the case of abortion is gonna mean that we need equal protection, right? People that are, you know, they they are committing these sorts of crimes that they are actually given ultimately a capital murder charge, right? That that's what equal protection would mean. Anyone who who commits any abortion nationwide is given a capital murder charge. On top of that, we need to start saying for all the the providers, whether that's doctors, the prescribers, the pharmacies, the online pharmacies, whoever it is, whoever is getting the medication to the people who are using it, those people need to be put away. Those people need to be stopped. That needs to happen if we're gonna fix these problems. Now, with that being said, when we get back from the break, we're gonna talk about Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is now investigating. You guys know uh Meta, you guys probably have seen the meta glasses if you've been on social media at all. Uh these meta glasses are essentially these uh they're a combination of AI, uh what's called AR. So if you guys have heard of VR, the big masks you put on that let you see stuff, uh virtual reality. AR is augmented reality, which means it takes what you already see and it kind of augments it. In other words, it just kind of puts a screen on there. You can s it can look at what's around you and you can be like, hey, w you say you walk by a restaurant, you say, Hey Meta, what are the reviews on this restaurant I'm walking by right now? What do people on Yelp think about that place? Is that a good place to stop for lunch? Right, that sort of stuff. But it also can record video and audio, of course. Um it can do a variety of different tasks. And so, you know, it's been a pretty cool invention, pretty cool progress. I mean, a lot of people have just been using it to make social media content of whatever trouble they're getting into. Uh but now Paxson's investigating those glasses over privacy concerns, which we'll talk about and dive into in the next segment. Texting at 713-779-5978. We'd love to hear from you guys. If you have any disagreements, questions, concerns, 713-779-KYST. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative, and Lord of the right back to talk all about Meta, the glasses, privacy, your rights, and so much more when we get back. So hang tight. Talk soon.

Paxton Targets Meta Glasses Privacy
SPEAKER_14Attorney General Ken Paxton is now investigating Meta AI glasses for potentially collecting and sharing Texans and, of course, everybody else's personal data. Now, although Meta advertises the glasses being designed for privacy and protecting the personal information of its users, Paxson has raised concerns as to the truth and, of course, validity of those claims. Now, Paxson is coming out, he's alleging that employees of Meta's Kenya-based subcontractor, Sama, have full access to consumers' private information. Annotators from Sama have claimed that they have access to video material of users' private moments, such as bathroom visits, among other intimate moments. Any uh you know, faces that ultimately appear in annotated data are automatically blurred, but one employee noted that this is not always the case. They're supposed to be, but that doesn't always work out quite like intended. And so Paxton came out and he said, quote, I will continue to relentlessly stand up to any company that threatens the privacy and safety of Texans. Meta's glasses raise serious concerns, and my office will thoroughly investigate these devices to ensure that no individual is being unlawfully recorded, tracked, or subjected to the unauthorized collection of their data. Now, meta AI glasses are smart glasses equipped with cameras, speakers, and other communication tools that enable users to capture and share data. Paxton is kind of coming out and he's he's essentially saying uh that that according to the privacy notes on the glasses, they're automatically switched to always enabled mode, allowing the device to constantly process video data, which of course, again, is supposed to be private. It's supposed to be kept on product on your particular server, but instead, since it's being used for you know data preferences, one of those little tiny buggy opt-in moments, even though they're not keeping your videos and storing them somewhere, it still comes through their servers. And so they still have access to seeing it at some point. And so uh I think the there's a small LED indicator that activates when you're recording. It it's easily hidden. It's not always active in always enabled mode because it's not always just recording. And even then, that doesn't mean that you'd see it on and you'd have to be actively looking. I wonder if those glasses are on right now, even though I didn't turn them on, and no one would think to do that. Another, of course, concern is that that Meta is talking about potentially bringing facial recognition to the product, which would allow it to collect your facial geometry from your built-in cameras. And so, of course, he issued now a a CID or a civil investigative demand to to Meta to quote investigate and determine whether Meta deceptively misrepresents the extent of its use of private data from consumers in violation of Texas law. And remember, this is not Paxton's first kind of go with Meta, particularly. This is this is not the first. Uh, we reported on this a couple years ago when there was that massive settlement uh in 2024 over the facial recognition of of their software found in their ongoing programs at the time. I think that was I think it was a $1.4 billion settlement, which was the largest ever from any sort of action like that. Uh $1.4 billion with a B was the outcome of that settlement. And so again, Paxton's pretty good at what he does. Right? Again, regardless of who you vote for, by the way, in the in the ongoing runoff, whether you vote for Chip Roy or Maze Middleton, and like I said, we do not endorse regardless, I don't think it's it's not gonna be Ken Paxton, right? I mean, even if even if whoever you picked you think is like absolutely excellent, and it's going to be one of the best per people at the job. Yeah, Paxton was arguably the best. So and and don't get me wrong, Paxton has his personal issues and you know, personal scandals and whatever, and you know, I wish that weren't the case, but as far as the Attorney General's office goes, Paxton has been absolutely incredible for years and years. Uh and so again, this is not his first time dealing with meta, particularly over privacy concerns. And so we'll we'll find out how this case actually kind of plays out. Uh if it's true the people in Kenya are Watching people's moments in the bathroom, um, I think that's gonna be a a m a pretty massive settlement. Uh, it may even turn into other civil suits from people that owned it. Might turn into one of those, you know, class action, hey, did you own metaglasses between 2020 and 2026? You may be entitled to financial compensation. Gonna be one of those kind of moments, depending on what they find out. Maybe it turns out that employees are lying, that they don't actually see anything, and we're good to go. Uh we'll find out. And of course, that's not even getting into the facial recognition software and what that's gonna look like. Though so many cities are now using these AI cameras that are they argue predictive of illegal behavior. So I don't know like we're pretending why all of a sudden the government is is overly concerned with your privacy in that regard. Um we should be fighting for privacy at every turn. That's why I'm concerned about it. But it's our own governments that are that are buying up these cameras that do this. This is now, I think, the number one camera provider to to government nationwide, I think it's called Flock. And they're the ones with these AI algorithmic cameras. We know we just talked with Charles Blaine last week about how Houston has now ordered a mass amount of them for our city uh that are again supposed to be predictive and tell who's gonna commit a crime before they ever commit. It's like minority report coming true. I mean, we always know it's gonna be the case with AI. I I we I don't think anyone thinks it's gonna go terminator mode. I think minority report is uh certainly on the table. Some other pretty dystopian films are on the table too, unfortunately. With that being said, when we get back from the break, of course, it is the bottom of the first hour, so we'll go over the weather, what we see coming out from today, the rest of this week. Spoiler alert, rain. That's the the clearest answer I can give you. But we'll talk about it when we get back. As always, if you would like to text into the show, the number is 713-779-5978. Houston Rain Forecast And Flooding
SPEAKER_14We also have another atmospheric disturbance coming in from the west, which will be increasing storm coverage before sunrise, and of course the morning rush, especially near and south by 10. Some storms could produce torrential downpours, lightning, gusty winds, all that sort of stuff. Also, watch for water, pooling on roads, reduced visibility, and isolated street flooding. Houston's broader stormy pattern is also expected to continue through Memorial Day weekend and potentially into next week as deep volumes of atmospheric moisture from the Gulf continue to feed rounds of thunderstorms across the across the whole region. Bottom line, the heaviest storms are most likely during the morning commute. Rainfall totals of half an inch to three inches are possible, with, of course, as they say, localized or isolated higher amounts, depending on where you're at. Localized straight flooding remains possible, and more rounds are expected as you get into the weekend. Forecast guidance shows thunderstorms becoming more widespread by sunrise today. Any storms that do develop could produce high rainfall rates, uh, especially, you know, similar to yesterday's areas near and south of I-10 could once again see the most persistent rainfall, especially portions of Brazoria and Gavison counties that picked up three to five inches of rain early yesterday. With severe weather, not very likely. A few storms could still produce gusty winds, so you need to be on the lookout for that. Storms tomorrow are, you know, having showers and thunderstorms, but usually in this sort of different kind of organized activity. Uh so it'll be a little more scattered, which makes it way, way more difficult to actually predict more than 24 hours out. So of course we'll update you during the morning show tomorrow for what we're really getting. But we do expect repeated rounds of rainfall going through the next few days, possibly the next week, even as we keep you updated. With that being said, we get back from the break at the top of the next hour. Very exciting guest, Briscoe Kane, coming on. We've had him on before. Great guy, we'll have him on. Uh go over the race, everything going on with early voting, so on and so forth. You won't want to miss that interview. So hang tight, text in 713-779-5978. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. I'll be right back with Brisco Kane at the top of the next hour.
SPEAKER_08From deep in the heart of Texas, comes Houston's God-loving patriot, the voice of reason. This is the Lone Star Conservative, Michael Wilson.
SPEAKER_23Let's go deep.
Briscoe Kane On Runoff Politics
SPEAKER_14Welcome to the show, Briscoe.
SPEAKER_06Good morning, Lone Star Conservative, Michael Wilson.
SPEAKER_14It's very good. I'm very glad to have you on. We always have a good time. And we agree on a lot of things. And so I want to jump into that. Of course, everyone should be aware. I've been highlighting it a lot this week. We are in early voting right now. So if you have not gone out and voted, I always recommend. I know there's those conspiracy theorists out there, and I don't blame you who say, you know, I gotta be there on election day. I don't trust the early voting. But I do. I recommend early vote. If you can't make it, of course, go out and vote on election day. How are things going, by the way? I'm sure for you, life has been pretty, pretty busy given that we're in the middle of this runoff election cycle now.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, look, I'm I'm just trying to find 25 hours in a day right now. Uh but like we're we're we're really strong. Let's talk real quick, just not not about myself, but yeah, the the importance of actually doing. Um last at least if you're in here's county. I think the Democrats uh got declared that that more of them showed up now. Look at historical election results or pattern um and saying that if they vote more of them vote in the primary that determines what happens in November. Um but we can't have them having any more confidence. Okay. Right. I mean show up. Um and absolutely do not wait until election day because you never know what happens, and it's it's a common reality that people end up forgetting or it rains.
SPEAKER_14I yeah, I was gonna say it rains, or you get in a car out. You just get a fender bender because you got off work late. You get a fender bender at 6 30 on your way. You're like, oh, I have plenty of time. You get a fender bender and it takes 30 minutes. Well, you can't vote now. I mean you have no say.
SPEAKER_06Let's go.
SPEAKER_14Let's go. It's time. Now I do want to I wanted to talk a little bit about because of course you're obviously in this runoff election and and things are have been uh pretty heated, uh, but I think it kind of highlights uh a bit of a disparity between a lot of where the party's going, a lot of where conservatives are looking, especially grassroots conservative, uh as you get further down south, especially Texas conservatives. I think a lot of that kind of centers around um the difference between, hey, outside interests and and maybe national interests and and these sort of you know situations, as opposed to I think where a lot of the party is headed when it comes to grassroots conservative values, caring about the community that you're in. I've long said on this show, this is why, you know, Briscoe, you know I largely cover local and statewide issues, because I say, hey, the most influence and impact we can have is on people in our own neighborhoods and then in people in our own city and in our own county. And I think you've kind of taken that into politics, and and correct me if I'm wrong on that, but that appears to be the case.
SPEAKER_06I I w what what other way is there? How about how about we need to restore it being the norm? I mean, it shouldn't really be the exception. That's that was the entire idea of uh of the republic was in someone from your community.
SPEAKER_14Um because the reality is that if you're gonna be represented, it has to be by somebody that knows you.
SPEAKER_06Uh or at least somebody that knows your way of life, and that's why invested in look it's because you're invested in it's where your roots are, right? You you have to share those roads, you share the schools, you share the facilities. You know, uh you want to you I think it matters, right? You've got roots. Um I think it matters that people will will see you at the grocery store or the checkout line or or church or your facility and can hold you accountable. That's it that's important. It's about accessibility.
SPEAKER_14Right, and here one thing that I do want to bring up for our listeners, you know, because I've said on the show and and at the station, we don't do endorsements, we just we aren't interested in jumping in that whole political mess. But I've always said the reality is that endorsements uh used to be very different than they are now. I know I know nowadays it's like a whole campaign feature. It used to just be that you had a couple of endorsements from people that the community knew, say, hey, this guy likes what we're working on. Um and now it's turned into like a national competition of who gets the biggest names. Very different from what it used to be. Uh but I think you're exactly right on what should be normal. Uh we've normalized that people are just they run on on careers in politics as it being an avenue for financial success or for some level of notoriety and fame, as opposed to, hey, I actually care about the people in my community and I would like to stand up and make a difference.
SPEAKER_06Pretty simple, but hey we do have to be reminded there's a small, very small percentage of our population. They're sociopaths. No. And uh be getting office.
SPEAKER_14Yeah, I and many of them, it seems like un disproportionately many of them get into office. Uh far too frequently, it seems like that's that's the selection criteria is you gotta be you gotta be something to get in. I I I don't I don't envy your position, Briscoe, I'll be honest. I like I like where I'm at, uh, where I can kind of stay out of the mess but be in it. Um one thing that I do wanna I do want to ask, since we're on the topic, I want to know a little bit about you. Um obviously you've you've represented a lot, you've done a lot. What kind of drove you towards the position you're running for now? What what kind of what kind of changed in terms of, hey, this is where I need to be, this is where God's putting me, this is what I think is important. Where did that step, I know there's a little bit further back and it doesn't, you know, but I I want to know for for our listeners to kind of get to know you, what what what drove you to the position that you're looking at now?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, well, I I guess two things. One is I I was term limited, um, not legally term limited, but I'd I've given my my word that I would only do uh 10 years at 55 terms in Texas House of Representatives. Uh I think um Americans want fighters right now. And they're they're kind of just tired of a little excuses. I'll give you an example when when sometimes you can feel maybe I'm fighting for something on the border and someone say, well, the courts are gonna tie it up or it's not gonna be constitutional or it's never been done before. Um it's actually what I feel my voters are wanting. They're they're not wanting to hear that it's ever been that it's new, they're wanting to see results or at least being a try and attempt. Uh that's that's really all they're asking for. Um having a pattern of of being something new or different, fight for it. I'm giving an excuse. I'm taking you know, it's gonna be hard as uh as an excuse.
SPEAKER_14Absolutely. And another another really important thing that I want to highlight is we've seen uh uh unfortunately we've seen a lot of of I I want to be careful how I word it to make sure that I'm not insulting people, but we've seen a lot of drastic fights inside the the the Republican Party, uh where there seems to be I mean I would say two, but there's really more than two. There's numerous factions inside the right wing where you look at at what we would call rhinos, you look at people who are you know maybe less conservative, more moderated, people who are you know running on a Republican platform, but you they're they're that you can't even differentiate really between them and a Democrat politician who's moderate a match of the time. And so you've been, I think, touted rightfully as one of the most conservative members of the legislature. What kind of what kind of drives you? Obviously, a lot of that, of course, is that you believe in actually representing your own district. And I think that's that that that's probably the crucial point of a lot of this. What's kind of driven you towards being so conservative? Uh here on the show, of course, we greatly appreciate that, but what's kind of pushed you in that direction?
SPEAKER_06I I guess after the first session, uh it kind of um I guess became a sense to prior or wanting to I guess continue um doing it. But keeping your word is is really what it is. It's all about the version. And I guess you're one more than a few times. Um brilliant minds talking about Mark Jones or right university. Uh the information procedure anyway, which is kind of you can do it based off of all record votes, right? I've taken over 13,000 record votes that I've gone on on record and told people where I am, and I think that's a a vast difference between myself and my opponent who you know refuses to uh put her name on anything, refuses to fill out forms or questionnaires. When when you do that, when you're willing to do that, you're willing to be anybody, right? And I think that's uh a major difference is you get predictability uh with me. You know where I stand, uh you see my voting record, it's uh it's certainly not been perfect. Uh I keep my word and I do what I believe is gonna be right.
SPEAKER_14Right, absolutely. And that's another thing is is that a lot of people, um, you know, I don't want to name any names, but in a variety of races that are in runoffs right now, I think you can see the flip-flop consistently with whatever is politically expedient at the time. Um and when they do bad votes, rather than then admit, hey, I did something I shouldn't have done or I'm not perfect, a lot of times we do see this sort of claim of perfectionism. Well, uh or sweeping under the rug, I I guess is is the better way to put it. We see that all the time. And that results in a lot of people, as you mentioned, sociopathic in politics, a lot of people who are voting for things that do not represent their district, do not represent the Republican Party, do not represent conservative values or Christian values at all, uh, which has resulted in a lot of things being tied up, a lot of things not getting passed that the people want. Right? We've talked about, you know, you look over uh kind of unrelated and not in your wheelhouse. Well, you look over at the Save Act, for instance, and you look at a lot of this, you say, hey, this this has overwhelming support, and yet we're not passing it. Why? And it's because we use Totally.
SPEAKER_06Totally my wheelhouse, though. We we actually already did that here in Texas.
SPEAKER_14Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_06Okay, so I I think that that isn't the wheelhouse. There's a lot of things people are talking about. Okay, right. Um we we probably should do it nationally, but for Congress in Texas talking about how they want to abandon boys from women's case. We already did it. Yeah, we we want to do that for constitutional care. We we've already we've already done that here in Texas. We want to see North Korean farmland. Well, we we already did that here in Texas. We don't only prehimit them from buying farmland, they can't buy a house. Okay, and so these are things we've already done. If we want someone that it it can get the results as well, let's go.
SPEAKER_14Right. And that's I think a lot of what a campaign is about is look, and that that kind of goes into the voting record. Look, you can see the results of the campaign, you can see what we've done already, and we want to take that to a national level. Uh, we want, and of course, that means that Texas has to continue, of course, being at the forefront, but we want the rest of the U.S. to kind of follow in lockstep with a lot of these really good policies that we've passed and say, hey, and and that includes, of course, I think a big conversation right now is, of course, on the border. Hey, we want to see, you know, Texas has had to spend, you know, uh billions of dollars on the border. We've had to defend our own border under certain presidential administrations. It's been a huge mess, and we want to see more effort put in um by this role of government in national issues when it comes to the border. We need we need laws that are codified to protect that. Uh, and that requires people who already believe that, who've already been fighting hard on the the front lines here in the state to go represent us uh at the national level. That's incredibly important.
SPEAKER_06And like there's there's also I'm gonna sound uh odd right now, but there's some funding we need, not just even on that wall, but um you know, it's like we can use help with uh what's called the Retoca Kane eradication program right now. Right? We need we need roads built um you know al along the river to make things inaccessible. We can't control it. We can't we can't look at it properly issues like that. So of course cut expenses in other places. And not enough people are talking about it, right? The affordability crisis is real. And it it in order to bring it in though, it means we have to be willing to cut government spending. It makes people uncomfortable.
SPEAKER_14Of course. Of course it does. It creates a lot of difficult questions as to what that'll look like, who that'll impact, all those sorts of things. But that's the job, right? It's the job is making difficult decisions that i I and I've said this before, it's impossible to please everyone. You just can't do it. I I mean you could literally do no matter how you could have the most bipartisan policy of all time and it it's not going to please everybody. And so you have to make hard decisions that are in the best interest of as many people as possible.
SPEAKER_06And so Yeah. That's why I think uh, you know, as being somebody's a a a fiscal hawk, um, and of course is very socially conservative, um, isn't ever really been a fan of uh corporatism or of government handouts. When we look at what as of yesterday, it's seven point three million dollars being spent um uh opposing in this race. For context, um you look at T two, that's like uh two and a half million for incumbents. Uh this this is un unheard of stuff. When we're talking big money out of Silicon Valley and and hedge funds and uh two hundred and seventy thousand dollars from Jeff Bezos and his family through you know these nice sounding packs that sound conservative and stuff. Well why else would the establishment be fighting so hard?
SPEAKER_14Absolutely. So as we wrap up here, Briscoe, one more question that I kind of have is uh let's say that you you you win the election, uh, you win the runoff, and then you move on, you win the general. What is sort of your position going into that that position? What do you think is sort of the the number one or or a couple number one top top of the list things? Hey, this is what I really need to do. First off, this is my number one priorities. These are these are the things that are, you know, do or die moments, you know, give me liberty or give me death. What are what are the moments where you look at and you say, these are the biggest issues right now that we need to dramatically focus on? Should I win?
SPEAKER_06Yes. Well, it it is waste, fraud, and abuse reform. Uh and I think it's that simple, right? We want to cease the prosecution for the fraud, they want to see people held accountable. Uh they they want to see their dollars go farther, they want to see their government. We we need to go. Don't uh don't want to speak about these things. Um, I think you'll find if we can't just silent on it. Uh maybe they've already compromised.
SPEAKER_14Absolutely. Well, Briscoe, as always, we greatly appreciate you coming on, giving us your time this morning for all you're doing over in CD9.
SPEAKER_06Good morning. God bless.
unknownGood.
SPEAKER_14Of course. With that being said, ladies and gentlemen, when we get back from the break, we're going to quickly touch on Harris County planning a $2 million smart flood warning system ahead of the 2026 hurricane season.
You don't need to be talking to phone operators in other countries that you don't know who they are, where they are, or what in the world they're doing.

Smart Flood Warnings For Harris County
SPEAKER_14I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. If you've ever driven through Harris County during a heavy storm, you know how quickly that roads can can and do flood and how dangerous those conditions become in in really just a few minutes. Now, county leaders are trying to test some new technology out designed to warn drivers. Houston is one of the most flood-prone regions, as we all know, in the country. And officials say that flashlighting remains a major safety threat across the area. According to emergency experts, just six inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet, while one foot of water, one foot of water, can carry away a vehicle. To help reduce those risks, Harris County is now using a $2 million federal grant to develop a smart flood warning system. The proposed system would place sensors on flood-prone roads to monitor water levels in real time. When water reaches those levels, the technology could automatically activate flashing warning signs, floodgates, and digital alerts to keep drivers away from those hazardous areas. Drivers would also be able to check an online public dashboard showing real-time water depth information at specific roadways before they even start their trip. So county officials are going to say the project will focus first on medium to high-risk roads, especially in unincorporated areas where flooding conditions can change rapidly and without a lot of data. The effort comes, of course, as rescue crews are responding to drivers trapped in flooded vehicles during major storms. And officials, even with all the added data, it's still very important that people remember, you know, turn around, don't drown. If you cannot see the road and it's standing water, do not assume, yeah, well, I have a lifted truck, or yeah, but I I bet I could make it. That's never there's you are not in a hurry for anything. I mean, even if it's your own wedding, they'll wait for you, I promise. Just just go around. It does not hurt anything to take your time. And so never never go through those sort of conditions. Nevertheless, the project is still in the planning stages. They've not announced any specific locations or a timeline for installation for the first sort of kickoff with the pilot, if that works, uh they want to expand it to be a countywide program. But of course, they don't want to spend, you know, tens of millions, hundreds of millions of dollars on a project when they can test it out for two million first with a federal grant and find out if it's going to be successful in the first place. I think that's a good place to start. And so we'll see how it goes. I think it's great. I think it's again, I've I've mentioned there are good uses for technology and bad uses for technology. And I think that's one of those cases where you can kind of see that contrast. A lot of the bad uses we've seen recently have been with the flock cameras, where we're seeing this sort of algorithmic predictive bad behavior on the roads. That is not that's not super exciting. That seems like a massive version of privacy violations. But when you look at uh potential flood warnings using, you know, I don't want to say similar technology, but in the same vein, I think that's one of those cases where you can see, hey, look, this is actually much more successful. Uh this is this is much more acceptable, a much better use of our time and our money uh to keep people safe, especially in a region like Houston where we do have those sorts of problems. We do consistently have, as you guys know, we have any sort of storm at all, you have the vehicles that are that are down, that are being washed away, that are upside down in the water, that are being, you know, uh totaled because people aren't paying attention. Having data sets that can make sure those people are staying safe is is a good idea. With that being said, as I mentioned, uh at 730, in in the next sort of segment that we have coming up, we're gonna have Daniel Greer coming on uh to go over the Texas lottery scandal, everything going on with that, some background, all the stuff you need to know about how that's kind of played out here in the state, um, as I want to say kind of a precursor to the same kind of stuff you'd definitely expect if we ever legalize casino gambling. We'll talk about it when we get back. As always, if you would like to text into the show, the number is 713-779-5978. That is 713-779-KYST. I'm your host, Michael Wilson. You're listening to the Lone Star Conservative, and we're right back with Daniel Gere from Texas Scorecard right after the break. Stick around.

Texas Lottery Scandal With Daniel Greer
SPEAKER_14A dismissed indictment, a re-indictment, allegations tied to what prosecutors are saying was an effectively a massively rigged jackpot. Daniel, appreciate you joining us this morning. Thanks for having me, Michael. Of course. Now let's kick it off with some overview here. For people who have not been following the story, every twist and turn therein, what exactly is Gary Grief accused of doing in this case? What's the background of this?
SPEAKER_05So the charge is of use of power, uh, and it stems from a jackpot that was won in 2023. Uh that jackpot was rigged. Uh the buyers purchased nearly every single combination of numbers that you can uh in order to secure the win. And the only way they could do that was with Gary Greek health.
SPEAKER_14Right. And so to be to kind of make it very clear, this is not some sort of clerical mix-up, right? This was kind of allegations that the system was intentionally and explicitly manipulated, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, these guys had uh multiple what they called uh lottery ticket retailers or lottery couriers, three of them, uh, and they had multiple locations where they brought in a ton of machines. Uh they hooked up uh basically they hooked up these machines to iPads that had QR codes on them so that they could hand rapidly uh and and print these tickets. Not only were they doing it in three or four locations, but there's actually video uh that we published on our website, New York Times published as well of children who used to print lottery tickets at awesome location uh where they were where they were pulling the uh the height uh on the on the detective and the lottery players detected. Uh just absolutely uh wild stuff, corrupt stuff. Uh but yeah, they they used this technology with the help of the lottery commission and uh Gary Greef to to pull it off.
SPEAKER_14Right. Now, one of the weirdest parts of this story, at least to me, is that the there was an original indictment, uh, which was uh it appears like kind of quietly dismissed and then suddenly reissued almost immediately, it appears like after some of the reporting from you guys. What happened? What what went on there?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so here's the so in the during the 2025 level legislative session, lawmakers, this was put on their radar, uh, and they paid attention, which you know clears to them. Uh Abbott, Greg Abbott, uh, and Lieutenant Governor both kicked off investigations. Uh those investigations ran for a very long time, longer than a lot of people uh thought that they should have been running with the clear evidence that was uh already in public view. Uh you thought they were moved a little bit faster. Um the anniversary. Uh we reported on the lack of reported on the anniversary uh in the lack of movement. The ring is actually uh indicated in the matter in the matter of three weeks. Uh we found out about it a few weeks later, we reported on it, and then miraculously, less than twenty-four hours later, the indictment was seenly back from the dead, resurrected, and a comment has been issued for dear resurrect.
SPEAKER_14Wow. Yeah, and and so I think it's it's it's I think a lot of people will hear kind of how we had this dismissed indictment and immediately think that someone was trying to make it disappear. And we're of course, as always, very, very, very appreciative of all the reporting from a variety of ages, especially from you guys, to make sure this stayed in the public eye, stayed in view. Um, but it's it's bare minimum, it's incredibly messy and suspicious, the whole thing from from top to bottom. And so I think there's a lot of concern. I mean, what what h why? Why did it happen the way that it did? Why do we have an indictment and then it dropped and then a reindictment? I think it's just all such a mess that I think is there's not enough information available for people to say what really happened.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, this is one of those stories, and Gary Grease is one of those people that the pe that the interested parties would love to see go away. Um, but unfortunately, there are people, there are groups like Texas Scorecard or reporters like Eric Techheimer and Watchdog, like John Mettles, who are out there uh forcing the issue and refusing to let this thing just be quietly shuffled off the stage. Uh this was by all intentions and purposes, and according to Senator Paul Badenport, uh clear kinds of money laundering. The lottery is being used to launch elistic cash, uh and texture is clear. And that's something that you can't just you just can't ignore it. It has to be uh it has to be fully fleshed out, and textors want and need when it comes to this, they need justice. Uh why is Gary Greek one of those people that they would love to see go away and go away quietly? Because he knows where all the bodies are buried.
SPEAKER_14Right. Now, one thing that I want to highlight that I think is really important. I'm glad you brought up uh that this this was a sort of money laundering because I think that. paints a bigger picture that I want to get into. Some people are going to hear, you know, lottery scandal and they're going to immediately, I don't want to say tune out, but they're going to immediately say, okay, it doesn't really impact me. Uh, this is gamblers and bureaucrats kind of going head to head. What does that matter? But I think it actually raises a much bigger issue about government agencies that are operating beyond lawmaker approval, which we've had a lot of issues with relatively recently. I know there's the issue with transmission lines, and that's not the only one, but a lot of issues where we see the question raised hey, why are things being done without voter approval, without lawmaker approval? Why are things being done behind the scenes? And I think this this paints a picture of, hey, I know it's the lottery, but this is a sign of what what could be to come if people don't put an end to it.
SPEAKER_05Well it's already here, unfortunately, and the reason why it's being done is because there's money to be made. Right now, throughout Texas government we have uh we have captured institutions. We have bureaucracies that now operate to enrich vendors rather than to protect Texas taxpayers. And that's what happened with the Texas Lottery is what's happening with the PUC these bureaucracies are taking uh they're taking liberties with their power in order to enrich a few at the expense of the many. And uh you're exactly right this is just another this is just a glaring example and one that's actually it's fairly it's a fairly fecky example. I get calls from documentarians probably once or at least once or twice a month who are interested in making a making a story out of this because it's a great story to tell. And thankfully it's one uh that hopefully Texans will will see and realize oh wait a minute there's a pattern of behavior here that I not only see in this bureaucracy in this agency but I see it happening over here and over there and it's time for us to take power back, tell these stories and uh hope for some change.
SPEAKER_14Right. One thing that really jumped out to me about this to get back into the details uh was this idea of third party ticket couriers to kind of highlight how this has gotten out of hand away from legislator approval. Uh basically enabling online lottery sales without the legislature explicitly approving that even happening. How did they even do that? How did that happen?
SPEAKER_05Yeah so it's a it's a long story but the short story uh the short version of it is is that in 2016 Gary Greef uh again the then executive director of the Texas Lottery uh tried to do an in run around the legislature and bring uh legalized fantasy force gambling uh to the state of Texas through the Texas Lottery. Now that effort was shut down very publicly by Governor Greg Addict after a reporting that appeared in the California news. And at the time the then chairman of the Texas Loton said that uh oh the lottery commission that the legislator wanted us to do the uh the rejection of communication and we try to do it in the future and we'll be sure to reach out uh and actually get the query after the failed event I did agree for handling the fate that they went and couriers into the fate and again the lottery ticket online lottery ticket retailers uh you were having meetings with them and you should come to the fair detective and then issuing an official letter on lottery commission letter saying it's okay for you to operate the care detective.
SPEAKER_14They needed those letters in order to get approval from banks because banks were weary about uh about lending money about setting up relationships with the lottery ticket retailers because it wasn't behavior that was mentioned in law in fact uh lawmakers have been very clear lottery tickets were be called in person at retail locations uh and open to the public and the lottery uh ticket retailers were nothing like that they were uh uh mass selling tickets they were housing warehouse that weren't open to the public uh they weren't doing anything else and so it couldn't be any more different than the intent of the law uh and again this was uh this was just vendors finding a way to interact with the bureaucracy to get something out of the state to get money out of people uh and and and courting the law in the process at the very least right and so that's why this allegation is that this international syndicate of sorts was effectively able to buy up massive quantities of these of these ticket combinations through those courier systems. And so again you mentioned that that completely changes the intent of of the law and of the system in general the spirit of what the lottery is supposed to be, which of course tying that back into the importance of of ending it here is to say I think it undermines to a very large degree institutional integrity. Because if we have this issue in one sphere, it's almost guaranteed you're going to have the issue in others. And so it's that same sort of bureaucracy that's running things that are not in the best interest of the people, not in the best interest of the party, not in the best interest of of anybody but the the companies or the syndicates or whatever groups are benefiting from that that institution. And so again this this undermines what's supposed to function and how it's supposed to function to a very large degree. One thing that I do want to highlight before we have to go that I found kind of interesting in the behavior here is uh a man by the name of Ryan Mandel who was basically Gary Grief's right hand man, I think briefly succeeded him even, but he's not currently named in the case. Do we have any indication as to why? I mean there seems to be plenty of evidence that he is a bare minimum kind of no I don't want to say involved, but had some sort of knowledge of what was going on?
SPEAKER_05Yeah it's hard to say exactly again uh the indictments and the behavior around the indictments was fishy. Uh brand Brandon Walton a a reporter for Texas Corp actually went down to the Travis County District Attorney's office and asked them what the heck is going on with this. Of course they said well we can't talk about it. We're gonna put out a statement later that hasn't happened yet. But again back to the idea that I think that um everyone who's involved with this is trying to keep it as narrowly scoped as possible. It's well we have to do something um we have to tie this off onto someone and we have to move it. Let's see if we can do it behind the scenes maybe we can shift it off. No they're paying attention um but they they it looks like they're trying to keep keep their exposure as small as possible. But in addition to Gary Grief I am in Dell uh there was uh uh Gary Grief's other a very important person to him uh would have been this gal named uh Nelda she was his if you look at uh Gary Grief testifying in front of any committees and house committees Nelda is sitting right behind him right beside him every single time uh she definitely would have known exactly what was happening with this uh and then his uh the the former in-house counsel all three of those people knew what was happening were likely involved with it uh offing and should have been brought in on this too but they're trying to keep it as small as possible to minimize the exposure uh and that's how you know we're on the right track uh pursuing the story.
SPEAKER_14Right, absolutely and so again it ties back to the broader issue of government bureaucracy, you know, outside approval and all these sorts of things and it also ties into government accountability on top of that uh how we hold people accountable, how we hold the system accountable when things go wrong. Everybody that's involved and this you know we see this a lot of times at the national level too at the local level uh where things are well we'll tie it to one person or we'll try to sweep it under the rug happens all the time and and we need to start sending messages no we're gonna report on this we're gonna talk about it until you actually deal with it with real accountability. Kind of final question to wrap up here where does this go next? What are the next major dates or developments that Texas should be paying attention to that we should be watching for what do we expect to come out of this yeah so it's fascinating uh where this is actually playing out because it's not just playing out in Texas.
SPEAKER_05Um one of the one of the places uh sorry the DOJ has multiple investigations opened into one of the lottery ticket resellers lottery.com uh multiple of its executives former executives have been indicted and have pled guilty to multiple crimes uh so information from that case could have an impact and a bearing on not only Gary Greek for the state of Texas uh there is a bar complaint in a in Michigan because the law firm that sent the money to Texas to purchase these lottery tickets money that has been called fraudulent money by the state of Michigan uh there's a bar complaint bar complaint there that's working itself out that could have an impact on Texas. There was a church that had millions of dollars stolen from it in California that again is suing one of these lottery ticket resellers uh so information for that case all of these places all of these uh threads coming together in Texas uh could blow this story even uh into even wider proportions than it already is uh and all of those things are coming up for the next 30, 60 90 days 60 six months uh this next half of the year and we'll be we'll be tracking every single one of them.
SPEAKER_14And speaking of, as we wrap up here, how can everyone stay up to date with all of that reporting not just on this case but so many others uh when you're not here on the show so that they can keep up to date with with all the developments.
SPEAKER_05You can find it on Texas Scorecard.com.
SPEAKER_14Excellent. Well Daniel as always we greatly appreciate all the reporting that you're doing keeping Exons up to date and for everything you got going on over at Texas Scorecard and we appreciate your time this morning. SPEAKER_14I'm Todd Starns and join me weekdays at 11 on Patriot Talk 920 and online at patriotalk920.com welcome back ladies and gentlemen I'm your host Michael Wilson and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative you know a lot of these issues with justice and safety as a result or lack of safety I should say a lack of security means that you more than ever have an obligation to defend yourself and your family which is where our sponsor Gun Owners of America comes in. Gunners of America is the only real no compromise major gun lobby in the entirety of the United States and they fight for that tooth and nail in word and in deed. They do that of course in a variety of ways by campaigning for good candidates who will actually defend your rights. They do that by lobbying for your rights specifically through the bills that are in the legislature and that means not just that they're involved in every step of the legislative session, but that far before and after the legislative sessions, they're always focused on what's next, what comes next for that lobbying for that research so they can be prepared. That also means that sometimes things will slip through the cracks, things will be bad, and they'll fight with lawsuits when it comes to tyrannical ordinances and policies. If you like to become a member you can go to goahuston.com that is G-O-Ahouston.com and is a $25 a year membership which goes back to the continued fight for your Second Amendment rights. Again that is G-Oahahuston.com to become an annual member now to wrap up here speaking of that lack of safety federal prosecutors have expanded their case against a former Houston urban park ranger who in 2024 was accused of using his position to detain, extort and sexually assault people in city parks. The ranger Joey Ellis targeted victims as far back as twenty twenty three according to the Justice Department in this new indictment that was unsealed this week Ellis is charged with twelve counts of deprivation of rights under color of law, three counts of brandishing of firearm and a count of witness tampering prosecutors said that Ellis used his position as a park ranger to prey on men whom he encountered in city parks at night. He allegedly lied about his authority as park rangers are not licensed police officers and sometimes carried a gun outside of his actual job to detain and threaten men. He's allegedly took their phones and money he's accused of forcing five of the men to perform sexual acts on him. An original indictment identified eight different victims. The new indictment identifies twelve uh the victims are only identified by letters but there's now arguably twelve of them. Officials said they are investigating as many as 40 cases involving Ellis uh they identified victims through a tip line by reviewing records that came from his online payment apps. And so he's also accused of soliciting you know sexual favors at the parks. He sent some of them to ATMs to get money while holding onto their property as ransom as some sort of collateral and so he's accused of taking man in a city park searching and seizing his phone he's accused of instructing a victim to contact others. He was used his truck to block people before threatening them, according to the FBI. And again he had no power to arrest anyone or have a vehicle towed away which is what he was threatening them with. He had no authority to do that. And so after that first federal indictment they revealed that they received complaints about him in April 2024 and been tracking his whereabouts for the victims were robbed, two counts of sexual assault at the the county level and so again there's so much going on here. And it again highlights uh power uh the the abuse of power, abuse of authority and the importance of defending yourself and being aware of your own rights, right, and and and of the positions people are in so you know what your rights are in that regard.
