Houston ICE Shooting Fallout And The Fight For Transparency
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A federal ICE shooting sparks a predictable rush to hot takes but the details that matter live in one word: jurisdiction. We start in Houston, where we unpack Mayor John Whitmire’s response, why HPD is not the investigating agency, and what “transparent investigation” should mean when the evidence and authority sit with federal partners. We also push back on the instinct to turn every enforcement tragedy into an instant political production, while still insisting the public deserves answers and the process must be credible.
Then we zoom out to the bigger Texas political battlegrounds shaping 2026: the growing push for closed Republican primaries, how Texas’s open primary system invites strategic crossover voting, and why state leadership suddenly sounds aligned. We also dig into George Soros-linked funding aimed at flipping Texas long term, plus the downstream policy fights that show up fast when campaigns get national money behind them.
The second hour turns practical with a guest who deals with real-world fallout. Justin White from Senior Health Services walks through Medicare open enrollment, the annual election period timeline, and the most common Medicare scams, especially illegal calls that pressure seniors with “last chance” language or trick people into plan changes. We wrap with two taxpayer accountability stories: Texas Film Commission travel to an international festival and a $1,500 check proposal tied to the Rainy Day Fund, along with why temporary payouts are not the same as long-term affordability reform.

Welcome And What’s Ahead
SPEAKER_08The voice of reason and store conservative Michael Wilson.
SPEAKER_13Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative here on Patriot Talk 920. It is good to be with you again this fine Thursday morning. And just for a quick update for everybody, I have a wedding this weekend. I will be out of town tomorrow, so this will be the last show of the week. I'll do my best to give you a good weather report, as good as I can, with the most educational, you know, materials I can to make sure that you guys are prepared for the weekend. Uh, and hopefully that can go through next Monday when we come back for the show. Um, but I just want to let you know that we will not have a live broadcast coming out tomorrow. Today will be the last one of the week. But, but I will make sure that this episode is as jam-packed as possible. This conversation that we're having over the next hour and 50 minutes is going to be as as filled with news as possibly can be. And don't you worry, because lots happened over the past couple days that we have to talk about. Obviously, there's been some updates in the ice shooting as well as ice operations, uh, even just generally uh here in the Houston area. We've also got some stuff coming out from uh from the state when it comes to elections uh between the push for closed primaries, uh George Soros continued to invest however many millions and billions of dollars into the city of Texas to try to turn it blue. Some new funding coming out from the city of Houston uh for hurricane barrel home repairs, as well as uh some some information coming on uh what Texas is gonna do in regards to our criminal justice system and what Texas is gonna do uh when it comes to the fact that we've now uh sent some Film Commission staff uh to left-wing film festivals. You're not gonna you're not gonna believe who's supposed to pay for that, who paid for that. Um you probably will believe it. But lot lots of news on the agenda. Uh they've already started these senatorial discussions on future bills. Um we had some terroristic threats against the heights, uh, just a wild turn of events, but I want to kick it off, uh, giving you guys the update on that ICE shooting, given that that was uh the breaking news of yesterday. And
The ICE Shooting And Jurisdiction
SPEAKER_13in addition to that, now, you know, the big the big question was what is Mayor Whitmeyer going to say? Because we got statements from basically every local politician, we're on the Ellis, I I all I don't even need to start naming names. We we got a statement of some sort from basically all of them, but we did not hear, we did not get any statements from our mayor, Mayor John Whitmeyer. Well, Mayor John Whitmeyer has now spoken out, and essentially his statement is is that the city is not in a position to launch its own investigation into that shooting, specifically because the Houston Police Department was not involved and the city has no jurisdiction over the incident. He said, We are calling for our federal partners to conduct a transparent investigation. If I have any updates, I will let counsel know. The jurisdiction question was right, you know, front and center at yesterday's city council meeting, especially because you had a lot of the ni bigger names in the city and and county politics who were demanding a local investigation being run by the department. And so Whitmeyer put out, you know, his own statement and he said, I've been clear, including in my remarks before city council, that I support the families and the community's call for a thorough, transparent, and credible investigation into the shooting of Mr. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. I believe this effort should be coordinated with our local and federal partners, including Texas's two United States Senators, to ensure the investigation has the full authority and access necessary to establish the facts. He said this is a tragedy. A life was lost, and my thoughts remain with the individual's family and loved ones as they endure an unimaginable loss. Our community feels the weight of that loss as well. The City of Houston does not control federal immigration policy, nor does it have jurisdiction over federal law enforcement officers. A local inquiry cannot supersede a federal investigation, and the city does not have access to the evidence, witnesses, or investigative authorities needed to conduct a complete review of federal actions. In other words, even if they said, Well, we don't care what the rules are, we're conducting an investigation anyway, they have none of the materials you'd need to actually conduct an investigation. Uh, we'll go back to the scene of the crime with a magnifying glass. Uh huh. It's not going to do anything. If you don't have evidence, if you don't have access to the witnesses, if you don't have access to the information, none of that matters. That's that's that's the crucial part of an investigation is the leads. If you have no leads, you have no investigation. That's essentially what Mayor Whitmare is saying is hey, I think we should work together. I mean, I should be, we should make sure that it's as transparent as possible, but there's not really anything we can do. He's, of course, as what Mayor Whitmare's always been pretty good at. Uh he doesn't like to, without a good reason, frustrate people. I know that he gets kind of into some some you know, squabbles and fights on city council, but to a large degree, he's been rather amenable. He likes to make sure that people are kind of getting along because that's when you know you get the most success. And so this is the very nicest way of saying, yeah, this there's just there's just nothing we can do. I wish we could. I I want to conduct, but we can't. There's literally nothing to be done. So we kind of just have to sit here, twiddle our thumbs, and hope they're transparent. But nevertheless, about five council members, including Edward Pollard, Alejandro Salinas, and Julian Ramirez, called for more information and transparency. Pollard specifically urged the mayor to call on local entities to canvas the neighborhood for surveillance video and encourage residents to turn in any photo or video evidence. Pollard said he disagreed with the mayor's response and argued the city can still take steps to gather the facts. Pollard said, I'm a personal injury attorney by day. If there was an accident on an intersection or on a street, I could go out there and talk to private business owners and get camera footage. I can talk to residents. I can try and find witnesses. I can see if there were any other accessible cameras that we would have had jurisdiction over. When asked whether the mayor would move forward with those requests, Pollard just said, Yeah, I didn't I didn't get a response. He said, When I asked Webmeyer directly today if he had any updates and my sentiments that we needed to do all that we can to show the public that we're going to do our own independent investigation for clarity and answers, I got no response. Of course, we've already had some protests. Uh you've already had other council members who've said that we need a thorough and transparent investigation. Uh you also said these activist groups like Lulac and FIEL are talking about unrest in the city. Um I think six council members said they were going to attend a protest later yesterday evening. Um also in mind yesterday afternoon, apparently there were five investigators from the Harris County District Attorney's Office who showed up to the scene to do the exactly that, I mean, we're assuming to do that kind of canvassing. We don't know why else they would be at the scene of the crime. Uh but yeah, basically the response is is simply there's just nothing really to be done. Um and and and and it that's not a problem. Here's the reality. If you want to conduct an investigation in the future, do it. If you want to conduct a private investigation, feel free to spend your money to do so. You're gonna you're gonna find better results that way. But if you're talking about a law enforcement investigation, this is under federal jurisdiction. And you're going to get you're you're going to do far more good. You're going to have far more opportunity to do good if you cooperate. That's just how it goes. Kind of reminds you of just it's just in general, when you're pulled over, not cooperating with the police, if you pull the the sa I'm a sovereign citizen kind of stuff, you might feel cool for like 10 seconds uh until your window gets broken. Right? You might you might feel cool in the moment. And then even if you're right, you go and you go before a judge, I it it just you're you're better off in 99.9% of cases just following orders. And I'm not talking about following orders to the point where I mean, obviously you stand up to tyranny, obviously you stand up to legitimate evil and and calls for you to do things that you're you know would violate your faith. But in general, when they say, hey, can I have your license, you don't have to go, why do you why why do I need to give you my license? Why do I need to do that? That's not gonna get you anywhere. And if if even if you know what the law is, and you know that somehow the law enforcement officer is is doing the wrong thing, you're still better off just taking it to court. He does whatever, you follow his orders, and then you take it to court. The street is not a court, he's not a judge and a jury and an executioner, so you gotta take it. But when when you so, and it's kind of the same analogy here, you're gonna get a far greater opportunity to do more good if you kind of cooperate with an already ongoing investigation than if you try to start conducting your own and being combative. It's not and and Maider Whitmeyer knows that's not gonna get you anywhere. It's actually, it's not gonna be a successful investigation. You're gonna have very limited material to work with, and and now you've sequestered yourself away from any opportunity you would have had. Um and look, again, everyone wants the truth. That's not you know something that the right is saying, no, we don't actually care. They can conduct it and we'll believe it. And everybody wants the truth, right? That's that's that's yes. Um, but not everyone wants the truth for the same reason. To be to be totally fair with you, right? We believe that his family deserves answers for sure. The public, especially, that's you know, funding all of this and voted for this deserves transparency. Uh, and law enforcement should have should be comfortable showing the public what happened um and and why deadly force was needed, and let it be a warning to everybody else saying, hey, this is when deadly force will be used. Don't try to do this thing. Don't try to run someone over with your car. Not a good idea. But there is a very large difference between what I'm calling for, which is transparency for the sake of transparency, which is that's the role of government. They're accountable to us, and they can't be accountable to us if we don't know what's going on, if they're not transparent about what they're doing. And the kind of truth the left demands, right? Because they're they're using this as an anti-ICE, basically this political production, this narrative that they're stringing along. And they're using city council members and they're using commissioners and they're using other local politicians, they're using their activist networks, and they're they're producing this sort of narrative that doesn't align at all with the way things are just generally operate. It's completely outside the realm of what we've ever done in these sorts of investigations. And so uh Mayor John Winmeyer is certainly right on the jurisdictional question. I mean, Houston police are not the is not the agency that was involved. Uh and this is a federal immigration operation, therefore, the investigative authority is federal. That's the way that it works. That's how jurisdictions work, right? The evidence and the personnel files and the body camera surveillance footage, that should all end up getting released, but that of course is going to be part of a federal investigation. It's not going to be part of the city's investigation. Um, I'm not saying that the city has to be silent, right? And that council members are not allowed to ask any questions, and we just say, shut up and deal with it. Like, I'm not I'm not calling for that. Um and it doesn't mean that local officials can't, you know, help residents preserve their own video or their own statements or information that could end up being relevant. Um, but it doesn't mean that you don't get to pretend that you get to put ICE on trial from your lowly position. That's not your job, that's not what you're good at, and it's not gonna do anything, right? The left has this sort of similar pattern going on. We see it all the time. Uh you have this federal immigration enforcement action, it happens, and then before the full investigation is complete, they've already begun framing the story as what they need it to look like. And it's not just the activist groups, because that's expected and it's still wrong, but you're an activist group. Of course, you're gonna say whatever you need to say. When you're a politician, there's a special level of standards that you're supposed to hold yourself to, of honesty and of integrity. And I know we live in a country where that's just not true anymore, unfortunately. We need a return to that. But there should still be at least some level of just integrity, saying, hey, we don't have the full facts, and we need to find them as best we can. And if that means cooperation for now and reviewing everything later ourselves, we'll figure it out. But all of this, these calls and saying ICE is evil and we tried to vote to stop these guys and all this stuff, demonizing just hardworking Americans who are trying to save their country is one of the worst kind of evils for a nation, right? They pull out the protest signs and they invite the political activists to come to city council, and suddenly the question goes from what happened to how do we use this moment to be anti-law enforcement when it comes to federal immigration authorities. That's what it turns into. Uh, and we have to reject that. We should we and we should be able to have nuance. All right. This is what I've said countless times on this show. People on the right get really fed up with the left, and for good reason. And it results in people on the right frequently, frequently saying, whatever they're calling for, I automatically don't support it. Right? Environmentalism is one of the greatest examples of this. One of the best environmentalists of American history, Teddy Roosevelt, Roosevelt, a huge environmentalist, by the way. Uh, the preservation of landmarks, national parks, um, belief in hunting and fishing and making sure that the world is being taken care of and we're being good stewards of the planet that God's given us, without some sort of lib climate activist framing, without some sort of worshiping Mother Earth kind of framing. Excellent at it. And that's the goal of good government and good people, is to be good stewards of what God gave us. Then all of a sudden the left comes out and they try to take over the term, even environmentalism. They become tree huggers and climate activists and worshippers and idolaters. And then the right, we on the right as Christians, we see that, we say, well, then I'm anti-environmentalist. I don't care. Dump the oil. Like we we we kind of go insane in the opposite direction in the pursuit of not looking anything like the left. And I want to make sure we're not doing that here, right? Because obviously I'm not on the side of saying, hey, these guys are bad and this is crazy. And if if Houston doesn't do our own thing now and demand it's it's I'm not calling for any of that. But I also don't want to go so far in the other direction that I just say, yeah, we don't need any other investigations. We trust the federal government incomprehensibly, don't look at anything, don't ask any questions, none of that. Of course we shouldn't say that. That's insane. We just we shouldn't blindly trust. Did anyone not learn their lesson from COVID? We should never blindly trust the government. And you didn't need COVID, by the way. You just needed to study any amount of history, not even just American history, any government history to know that you should not blindly trust the government. And if there's the opportunity for checks and balances investigations, we should take them. So yeah, we should get all the facts ourselves, right? We we we certainly should get preserved footage and and uh you know separate investigations. And if the officer did act wrongly, then of course there should be accountability. I'm not denying that either. If there, if it is, you know, comes out through the course of the investigation, they did something wrong, then yes, he should be held accountable for that, whatever that looks like. Uh but if the officer was actually being faced with a car that was going to run him over, he had every right, every right, even just as a citizen, to defend himself.
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_13And we can't we can't allow the pressure of politics to create this sort of standard where federal agents are expected to enforce immigration law, but are then abandoned the second that things go wrong, even if it's not their fault. Right? Because these these these same politicians who are complaining about the homelessness crisis, right? They're complaining about the drug epidemic, they're complaining about all of these things, then they turn around and they demonize the men who are standing on the front lines trying to put an end to a lot of this stuff. Right? We are not, and I know they want to be, but we are not a sanctuary from federal law here in Houston, right? We are not an island that is separate from the national border crisis and everything the federal government has to do. In fact, we're a hotbed for it because of where because of our location. Um, and and and Houston City Council is not some sort of random substitute for the FBI and the DHS or for federal prosecutors. They can work in tandem, they can work in cooperation with, and they can conduct their own investigation when the evidence is all released, but they're not some sort of entity that's above the law and able to break jurisdictional authority. It's not how it works. And so the mature position, the nuanced position, the one that actually pursues truth, is very simple. You should tell the truth, you should show the evidence, you should protect your process, you should stop turning every immigration enforcement incident into an anti-ICE rally as an opportunity for you to continue to demonize the hardworking men who are on the front lines, risking their lives, by the way, every day. The violence against ICE agents has skyrocketed, risking their lives and their safety every day so that your rights can be protected. We should not take any opportunity to just say, well, Betty did wrong, but he just wanted to shoot that guy. I mean, it really, it really is insane. And if the left gets their way, then the message that comes out of that's gonna be very clear. Hey, risk your life, do your job, uh, and then watch local politicians use your name to grandstand against what you did. That that's that's what we're telling those who are willing to serve. Now, before we go to the break, real quickly here, I want to uh I want to talk about one more major response uh to what happened in this particular case.
Mexico Threatens Legal Action
SPEAKER_13Mexico's president is now saying that her country will pursue legal action against the United States after an immigration custom enforcement agent shot and killed a man. That's that's the same guy, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, President Claudia Scheinbaum, which doesn't sound like a Mexican last name to me, but what do I know? Made the comments while speaking to reporters about the shooting yesterday. Quote, our goal is to go beyond diplomatic notes and what we raised at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, since we cannot allow the mistreatment of our brothers and sisters who are in the United States, our fellow citizens. Well, then maybe you should not have let them in our country. I mean, that's an option. Maybe you should secure the border from your side. Anyways, she said, so we're proposing other measures. There's been another tragic death of a fellow citizen in the United States due to detention issues when their only offense is not having papers, even though they were hired by a U.S. company. There's no reason for them to be in detention centers or for violence to be used. So we're preparing legal measures, obviously more significant ones. So now the president of Mexico is coming out and is threatening our country. Is is is coming out and threatening the U.S. with legal action. Really? Really? Um, um Mexico, can I just I'm speaking to you, Sheinbaum. You do not get veto power over our law enforcement on our soil. You don't get to tell us how we operate. You there are citizens, then take them back. Then don't let them come here. Because if they come here and try to run over our officers, I can tell you what's going to happen. And it can be sad and it can be tragic and you can whine about it, but you don't get to tell us what we do and do not get to do. You don't get to threaten us. That's not how this works, right? You can advocate for your citizens, you can ask for transparency through diplomatic channels. You can do all of that. You can request transparency, that's fine, right? That's what governments do. That is just global friendliness with one another. That's totally acceptable. But there is something that is deeply backwards about little old Mexico thinking they get to come in and tell us and lecture us about what we get to do while millions of your own citizens have fled to us. Uh and the argument is because you failed as a country in the first place. That's why they uh supposedly fled here. They're here because they actually hate you. You did so poorly at winning your country, they didn't feel like it was a good country to live in. So pardon me if I don't take your advice for uh with with more than a great I mean with more than a grain of salt. I mean you have failed tremendously in every regard. You're also a tiny, puny country comparatively to us. Right? This is this is like if the the the this you're this you're trying to be the school bully, uh, but you're actually in high school and you haven't crossed the five foot mark yet, and you're trying to bully uh some football kid who's six foot two, not a good idea. Let's just let's just put it, not a good idea. Right? You don't get to tell us what we can and cannot do. And by the way, you're threatening us. We're the ones that are expected to take your people in. Just so you know, all this is happening because we were expected to be the nice, the nice guy. That your people were fleeing, they were coming in here. We were supposed to absorb the migration and absorb the labor market disruptions and the housing crisis and the strain on schools and hospitals and roads, and the the cartel violence, and the fentanyl pipeline, and the human smuggling, and just the general chaos that. We got as a result of all of this. And then when we actually enforce American law, you turn around and threaten us. No. That is that is not the we dictate the terms of the arrangement now. You are not in charge to any reasonable degree. No, they're a sovereign nation. Yeah, well, if they're gonna act like this, maybe they shouldn't be. And I'm not I'm not calling for violence against Mexico yet. Yet. But if if they don't if they don't if they do not learn what their spot is, where they there's a food chain. Okay, there this is the way the world works. You don't have to like it, you can hate it. But there is a food chain when it comes to countries, and there is a list, and I hate to tell you this, Mexico, but you are not on the same part of the food chain as the United States. You're not you're not even just one step below that either. You're you're down there. And what you don't get to do is keep the border wide open, continually allow people to migrate into our country illegally, right? And then pretend like that's not a big deal. Like their only crime was just being there and then threaten us because one of your citizens who you couldn't control and you couldn't stop tried to kill somebody. No. No, that's not how this works. When we get back from the break, we're gonna jump over and uh talk about some stuff going on when it comes to elections and what's coming up in the next legislative session, what's going on in the political realm of the state when we get back. We'll kick it off talking about uh how Texas leadership is beginning to sort of align behind a push for closed primaries, which it should never, ever, ever have taken this long to align behind that push, uh, but unfortunately it did. And so we'll talk about that alignment and what they're calling for, specifically Governor, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick is also predicting that closed primary legislation will reach Governor Graham's desk as House leadership is calling the proposal at a Republican priority. So we'll talk about it after we get back from the break, what that looks like, why that's important and necessary, and where it goes from here. As always, if you'd like to text into the show to let us know your thoughts on any of the stuff we're covering, again, today will be the last show of the week. So if you want to let me know anything, do it now. 713-779-5978. That is 713-779-KYST. You are listening to the Lone Star Conservative. Texas Pushes For Closed Primaries
SPEAKER_13Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. So momentum is building behind the efforts, which again it should have been here long ago, uh, but to close Texas's Republican primaries. With Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick voicing the support for that proposal, and House Speaker Dustin Burroughs' office describing it as one of the priorities for the 90th legislature. Now, Texas currently operates, as we all know, under an open primary system, which allows voters to choose which party's primary they wish to participate in during any given election cycle. So back in March, say that you generally vote Democrat. Say you're even going to vote Democrat in the November pri in the November election in the general, but you don't like Paxton at all. You want Cornyn to be the nominee. You want it to be a Cornyn versus Taller Rico. Well, Tallerico is going to be Jasmine Crockett. You don't know that, but you're not that worried about it. You'll take Jasmine Crockett or James Tallerico. But what you really don't want is a potential Paxton win in November. And so to kind of not put all your eggs in one basket, you say, Well, I'm a Democrat, but I'm going to vote in the Republican primary so that I can get John Cornyn elected. That happens very frequently. It is a strategy the left frequently uses. And so closing the primaries would require party registration. That would require that you say no, who you vote for is going to be who you vote for. If you're voting in the Republican primary, you're going to vote in the Republican general. That's how it's going to work. You are a Republican now. We're closing them to only Republicans. So closing the primaries by requiring party registration is a priority now of the not only of the Republican Party, but it appears like our leadership in the House and Senate as well. During an interview yesterday with Mark Davis, Patrick said he supports closing Republican primaries and expects legislation to reach Abbott's desk. Patrick said, I don't oppose it. I'll support it, I believe. We'll pass it to the governor's desk. Patrick acknowledged concerns from some Republicans that closing the primaries could discourage crossover voters, but he still believes that c closed primaries are a good thing. Following those remarks, uh Dustin Burrows just kind of came out and said that he's working hard to make sure that every Republican is re-elected so they can work on Republican priorities, including this one, right, including closed primaries in the next session. That also comes uh weeks after Abbott, of course, endorsed that proposal during his speech to delegates at the Republican Party of Texas Convention. Uh he said at that point, let me emphasize we are going to make it clear that in the future, only Republicans vote in Republican elections. Um following his speech, he did say that he preferred addressing the issue through legislation rather than relying on the courts. So the lawsuit that you currently have between the Secretary of State and, of course, the Republican Party of Texas, uh, that's being supported by Paxton, Abbott's essentially saying, it's not that I don't want closed primaries, it's that I would prefer to just pass a law to do that. I don't want the courts to have to rule that we're required to, because that can be struck down later. The Republican Party gets new leadership and they backtrack on it. It's messier, more expensive. It would be better if we just passed the law ourselves, so no one would need to sue and it would stay a lot longer. And so he said legislators can and should be more responsive to Republicans than a judge may be. But we'll we'll we'll find out how this goes. Um Jane Nelson was one of the big kind of barriers to that. Uh and now that she's kind of out, she's resigned. Um I I think she is officially stepping down on July 17th. So that's that's only a little more than a week away when she'll officially be out of the Secretary of State position. We'll have to get a new one, uh, appointed by the governor, of course. But that was one of the big barriers, at least to the lawsuit. We'll see if we have somebody who's more receptive to doing it in the in the court perspective, fighting for that. Um, and and we all know the courts take forever. We all understand that the time that litigation takes anyway. So even if we do have that lawsuit and ends up playing out in our favor, even if that were gonna happen, there are significant odds that we could legislate it quicker. That we could actually have legislation to do it more efficiently and more effectively than waiting for the courts to rule. And I think it would be more long-lasting than if the courts ruled on it. That that's always been the preference. That was even the party of Texas' preference, they just didn't do it. The lawsuit started, if you remember, uh, you know, after the last legislative session, because the legislature didn't do it, they didn't pass it. Right? And we know why they didn't, because a ton of the people that are in know that if there's closed primaries, they may never win an election in Texas again. Because the primary voters are significantly more conservative, if they're actually Republicans, than the Democrats who are coming to vote for the moderate. Right? We know there are elections where the the person who won the primary won by less votes to the number of likely Democrats who voted in that election. Voters who went on to vote in the Democrat, you know, general election. And so a lot of the incumbents, a lot of the Republican establishment does not support closed primaries because it could mean that they'll be out of a job. That will end their political career for being milked toast and moderate. So we'll see how the legislature does, and we'll see how this court case plays out. We have two different shots that we're getting to take here. So hopefully one of them pans out in our favor. With that being said, when we get back from the break, speaking of elections, we're gonna talk about George Soros when we get back, uh, who is, by the way, continuing to bump money into efforts to turn the city of Texas blue. It's not worked before. I have a general expectation it's not gonna work now, but we'll talk more about that funding when we get back from the break. Soros Money And Gun Policy Warnings
SPEAKER_13Economically speaking, certainly culturally speaking, we all understand that. We know that we're leaders in that regard. It's a lot of responsibility, but it also means that we are a frequent target of the left's attacks. And so living billionaire George Soros has continued to fund Democrat campaigns across the nation. According to Transparency USA, Soros has already funneled over one million dollars to the Texas Majority PAC. The Federal American Bridge PAC, along the line with Soros, has also contributed over $7.57 million. So, you know, more of that sort of background money and those sort of transactions. Meanwhile, the Soros family has poured a staggering $103 million into the 2026 election cycle so far. And so you have Texas Majority Pack Director Catherine Fisher, again, that's basically just a Soros pack. She said, We're combining deep experience, local leadership, and significant statewide investment to meet this moment. With Trump back in the White House and Ken Backson dragging down the GOP ticket, we have a massive opportunity to win in 2026. Our efforts this cycle are aimed at winning in the short term and making Texas a true battleground state in the long term. The Texas Majority Pack is also seeking to expand and maintain its influence in the state by aggressively recruiting candidates in every district to ensure that every Republican has a challenger. Furthermore, Texas Democrats stated this project is built to last beyond 2026, supporting campaigns, training local staff, and strengthening the Democrat Party and progressive politics across Texas. Now we know that Attorney General Ken Paxton has actually previously launched an investigation into George Soros and his Texas Majority PAC for its role in potentially unlawful financial coordination and bribery of Democrat legislators who fled Texas to break quorum, if you remember when that happened, during the last legislative session, and largely Soros funded their ability to do that. And so at the time, Paxon said if Texas lawmakers are going to bow before the Texas Soros slush fund rather than the will of the voters, Texans deserve to know. Getting financial payouts under the table to abandon your legislative duties is bribery. Texas Majority PAC's actions seem to indicate that it may be using its Soros funded resources to break the law and fund the illegal abandonment of public office. If that's the case, as determined by this investigation, there will be a heavy price to pay. Texas Gun Rights is warning the Texas Majority Pack-backed candidates, including James Talarico, Gina Hinahosa, Vicky Goodwin, Nathan Johnson, Sarah Eckhart, and Joe John Rosenthal, as well as Clayton Tucker, all support radical anti-gun policies like red flag laws, raising the age to purchase guns, gun registration schemes, and the outright banning and seizure of common semi-automatic firearms. And so here's the reality. And I've always said, you know, I I know that you know we kind of there's there's two different directions, right? And and usually the balance is somewhere in between. I'm not saying that you know you have to be moderate, but I'm saying usually there is a balance. The left is frequently, you know, using a lot of their money to to fund these sorts of things. And the right has been filled with a lot of people who say, yeah, well, you know, you should never be, you know, wealthy. That's not good. You should give it all to charity. And I don't have any issues with charitable giving, by the way. It's one of the greatest things we can do as Christians. God calls us to do that. Uh but he doesn't he doesn't call us to sit idly by if we have opportunities to change the world. And sometimes that means that we need people who are producing and innovating and inventing, uh, you know, people like Elon Musk to say, hey, the left has their billionaires, we have ours, and we need to be active and dedicated to winning. We need to get back to that. And the reality is there is a lot of danger in these people winning their elections. Even if they even if they don't win, the pushes they're making on all sorts of policy, from abortion policy to LGBTQ policy to immigration policy, and of course, into gun policy. And that's why, regardless of who wins, you need to become a member of our sponsor, Gun Owners of America. Gun Owners of America understands very clearly that the Second Amendment is always at risk and it's never more than one generation away from extinction. That's how our rights work. But the Second Amendment is special because if the Second Amendment is violated, if it's infringed upon, that has a domino effect on all of the other rights that we as the American people have. All of the blessings that we experience. The only enforcement mechanism to protect them from tyranny is the Second Amendment. That's why they're out there campaigning right now during election season for good pro-Second Amendment candidates. That's why, as soon as the legislative session kicks off, they'll be lobbying. They were already preparing, really at the at the end of the last legislative session, they were already preparing for the next one, preparing what bills could be written, what their legislative priorities were, how they were going to fight for them. And of course, if it ever needs to go to a lawsuit to defend your rights that have been violated by a law or an ordinance or executive order or whatever else, they're there in the courtroom fighting for those rights. If you want to become a member, you can go to GOAHuston.com. It is a $25 annual membership, just $25 per year, to continue to defend and support your God-given constitutionally enshrine Second Amendment rights over time. That is GOAHouston.com. With that being said, as always, at the bottom of the first hour, we're going to come back to wrap up the first hour of the show with our weather report. SPEAKER_19The Medicare Minute with Justin White is brought to you by Senior Health Services.
SPEAKER_03If you are of Medicare AIDS or getting close or you have a loved one that is, be careful with those unsolicited phone calls that I know you know about. We get told about them all the time. What you need to know is that many of those phone calls are not even legal. They're coming from offshore call centers. Sometimes they're calling regardless of whether you're on the do not call list. Isn't that nice to them, by the way? It's really sweet of them to just do that because they are thinking that they can't get caught. Bottom line is when you get on there and you talk to them, they're already kind of operating sidelong of what should be done. And sometimes people end up in plans that they did not intend to enroll in. And so what do you do? Call somebody local. If you got a local agent, my gosh, call them and get in front of them. And if you don't have a good agent, think of an organization like Senior Health Services where you can sit down, talk about what you're looking for, and get the help that you need. You don't need to be talking to phone operators in other countries that you don't know who they are, where they are, or what in the world they're doing.

Houston Weather And Weekend Rain
SPEAKER_13A thin plume of Saharan dust is going to give Houston's sky a hazy look today, uh, but it's not going to keep our atmosphere dry for too long. Today's going to bring one of the more typical summer days of sunshine, isolated afternoon storms, and highs in the mid-90s before we have a potentially wetter pattern set in. A surge of tropical moisture combined with an upper level atmospheric disturbance is going to increase any any sort of you know accumulation of rain chances beginning tomorrow and continuing into next week. Now, the same pattern that's dominated much of the week is going to continue today. Spotty downpours are of course going to develop along the coast during the morning. By the afternoon, the seabreeze should bring potential storms, though they will be very scattered and very, very rare. Closer to Houston as temperatures rise, coverage is going to remain very limited because moisture levels are temporarily lower. The Saharan dust could also produce hazier skies, more vibrant sunrises. Uh, and while that does not have a ton of effect on temperature itself, which will climb into the mid and upper nineties, uh, combined with humidity and afternoon heatiness values or whatever, it's gonna feel pretty warm outside. Uh, and if you have any sort of allergies or nasal problems or or allergic issues, any of that sort of stuff, you probably will notice the Saharan dust. Now, the forecast becomes much more active starting tomorrow as deep tropical moisture is gonna stream inland. Combined with an upper level atmospheric disturbance, it's going to support scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms through the weekend and likely into next week. Rain chains are going to climb to forty to sixty percent each day, so significantly higher than it's been, meaning that most communities should expect at least one round of rain, if not more. Exact totals are going to vary depending on where thunderstorms develop, but widespread amounts of one to three inches appear likely through the weekend, and localized totals of four to six inches are possible where storms repeatedly struck track over the same areas. The added cloudiness and rainfall should shave a few degrees off of afternoon temperatures early next week, although it will still remain humid. Even with slightly cooler afternoons, any breaks in the rain are going to feel very mucky, making it, again, another very classic Southeast Texas summer pattern, just with much better odds for rainfall. Uh, that'll be the best update I'll be able to give you guys for the weather before I'm out of town, but I'll come back Monday and let you know how everything's going, where we see things going into next week for sure. Uh, but do expect warm temperatures and the possibility for more widespread rain this weekend. That being said, lots more stuff coming up in the second hour that you will not want to miss. As always, if you'd like to text in, the number is 713-779-5978. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and Lord willing to be right back at the top of the next hour. So don't go anywhere, and we'll talk soon.
SPEAKER_08From deep in the heart of Texas, Coach Houston's God-loving patriot, the voice of reason. This is our own star conservative, Michael Wilson.
SPEAKER_16I'm a fan day. Let's all be a fancy.
Medicare Open Enrollment And Scams
SPEAKER_13So we're doing it on Thursday this week, is none other than Justin White from Senior Health Services coming on the show. Welcome to the show, Justin.
SPEAKER_04Hey, good morning. Good to be here. Yeah, it's vacation time.
SPEAKER_13Sorry about sorry about the juggle of days, folks, but we're we're gonna get her done. No, absolutely. I don't I don't mind at all. It's good switching things around sometimes, kind of spreading things out. And I'm excited to get into it today because we're getting closer and closer, of course, to Medicare open enrollment and the annual election period. Um, for those who maybe are new to Medicare or don't know what that is, or maybe they hear it every year, but they still just don't really understand what that is, uh, what is this sort of annual election period and and then we'll get into kind of when it starts and and all the stuff accommodated with it, but what is what is open enrollment? What is the annual election period?
SPEAKER_04Well, the annual election period is is roughly analogous to uh the same one when everybody was uh in the is if you know, basically working. And you remember at the end of the year, everybody had a chance to kind of go in and evaluate what you had and and and make decisions from there on exactly how you wanted to go forward. And obviously that's what we're gonna talk some about this morning, but that's really what it is. And it pertains mainly to your Medicare advantage type plans and your drug plans. That's what the election period is, is to make adjustments to those two types of plans in the fall for the for the new plan year, which begins, of course, on January 1st.
SPEAKER_13Right. So when is the open enrollment actually open? When is when is the actual uh annual election period?
SPEAKER_04Um it actually officially starts on October 15th and runs through midnight on December the 7th. And one thing that a lot of people don't know is there's like a soft opening uh which starts on October 1st where we can actually start talking about and presenting the plans. We just can't write them yet. So that's the test software and just kind of start the process, make sure everything's working. That's October 1st through the 14th, but the actual election period starts on the 15th of October and runs through December 7th at midnight.
SPEAKER_13Right. So that gives you the opportunity to kind of talk to people who are in the programs and say, hey, we already know what's coming. Here's what we can start looking at for your particular plan. You can go ahead and start calling and finding out, hey, what's going to be best for me. So then it just gives you guys time to research and them to find out what they're looking for. Um, so exactly one of the things people I think need to be on the lookout for as we're getting closer to that period, and and we've talked about this before, but I want to talk about it because I think it's important going into another annual election period, is the scams. That unfortunately there's all these people that that of course want to make money off of this, and they'll take advantage of people that are in vulnerable positions, that are confused and concerned, uh, as people do. And so I what I want to get into is how people can sort of spot those scams, what those scams are, and how people can kind of look out for them, where they're coming from, uh, all that sort of stuff. So can you kind of run us through these pretty common at this point scams and how people can kind of see that they're coming?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it it really it really stinks. And and a lot of them, and Zen dare say maybe most of them are happening on the phone. Um, and the first thing that you can do is just recognize when you're getting a call that shouldn't be happening. And a lot a lot of people don't understand. You need to know, you know, the only time you can really receive a phone call from somebody is if you saw them somewhere and literally filled out a form called the permission to contact, then they have permission to call you once. Right? The other time that you can receive a call is if you're already doing business with someone, that's another deal, you got an established business relationship. And then the the last one is you were somewhere or you heard an ad, like for example, you hear this segment this morning, you get the phone number from Michael, and you call Michael, and let's say for some reason you have to you leave me a message and I'm calling you back. That's another legal phone call. If you get another phone call outside of one of those, in 99% of the cases, it's illegal as all get out, and you don't want to do business with people who are doing stuff like that. They're breaking the rules, they're skirting the rules, and that's the that's probably the most common thing that you can see. Most of the calls you're getting right now are not legal, and it's annoying as all heck, but that's what they're doing.
SPEAKER_13Right. Now, one of the big concerns I have about that, of course, is that it's not just that they're kind of bending the rules in order for them to get more business, but often, you know, when there's smoke, there's fire. Uh, that's just a pretty fair analysis. I would imagine that in addition, of course, to them breaking the rules on one front, that might be the case in other fronts, is there concerns about, you know, charging you? What what kind of what kind of things are we talking about in addition to just illegally calling you? Are people often having to go through as a result of these scams?
SPEAKER_04Well, when you get on there, I mean, there's rules. I mean, we see and I have no idea exactly what's happening on this stuff, but there are situations where people call up and they just talk to somebody for a minute, and uh they will swear up and down they didn't do anything. I told them no, I told them I have another agent, and I was just trying to get off the phone, uh, but then two weeks later they get a new set of cards and find out they ended up in another plant. And so they get them on the phone, and I've I've heard they fabricate recordings and just different things like that. So if you get on the phone and talk with them for any length of time, and especially if you give them your Medicare number because you they catch you in a weak moment and they say we need to check your benefits to need your Medicare number, um, chances are you may not have intended to, but you probably are gonna find yourself in a brand new plan, and then we've got to go in there and unwind it and try to figure out how to get you back where you were. So that's that is very definitely something. Then, of course, they're the identity thieves that are out there, and and just they're just bad people that you don't want to talk to. And I'm not talking about the legal folks. If you get somebody you deal with and you requested a call back and they call you back, that's legit. I'm talking about the ones that have called and you don't know where that call's coming from, those are the scammers. That's what you look out for. So I don't want to paint with too broad a brush because there's a lot of people that do business on the phone and they prefer that, but you gotta make sure that they're legit and they've got to have permission to call you. And if they do, then get after it.
SPEAKER_13If they don't, buyer beware. Right. And of course, there's always some level of urgency, but a lot of times you see this with almost any scam, but I'm sure it's the same here, uh, where you'll you'll hear a lot of urgency. You're gonna lose benefits. This is your last chance. Um, do we do we is it kind of expected to get that kind of pressure as well, that sort of you have to do it now? Kind of like when you go to stub oven it says only one ticket left, and it's it's there's probably like a hundred tickets left, and so they're overcharging.
SPEAKER_04Totally. Totally. And because scams always contain little slivers of truth, that's something you gotta watch for. So, like, well, like one of the probably the most common ones is when we get towards the end and you're gonna start getting calls, and you're gonna start getting mail that say, hey, it's it's your last chance to renew your plan for the coming year. You need to re-up your Medicare. And Michael, they're saying that because they remember that people had group insurance. Maybe somebody's aging in and they're coming in or they're about to retire, or they just retired, and they've gone for the last 40 years having to renew every fall their group insurance. Well, the families, they know that. And so they get you on the phone and say it's time to renew. Well, in Medicaid, if you do nothing, your plan just rolls over. So, yeah, we get to have to call the plan. Okay, so I gotta call you in the fall and re-re upgrade and renew it. And I'm like, no, you do not. As a matter of fact, and thank you for bringing that up. That is a lie. If your plan is not being canceled, and you'll know that from your annual notice of change, that's what you look for, is the annual notice of change. If you don't like how your plan's changing, you're not gonna renew that thing, you're gonna kick it to the curve and we're gonna go shopping. If they cancel your plan, obviously you're not gonna renew that thing. That thing, you're getting kicked to the curb, and we've got to go shopping. And then if you look at it and you do like your plan, like, I don't want to change anything, I want this thing again, then you do nothing and it rolls over automatically and auto-renewes. So you will never renew your Medicare plan. Um, it's always going to be leaving it alone or going shopping for something else. That's probably, in my estimation, the number one phone scan going on. Most common, you're gonna hear it over and over and over again in the fall. And those are shady operators and don't do business with them.
SPEAKER_13Right. Now, with that being said, I also think that highlights as we're wrapping up here, the importance of doing business. Someone that you know is you mentioned legitimacy is legitimate. Uh, someone that is, especially when you talk about, and you don't have to be, but you talk about the the local opportunity, uh, people that are here in your area that kind of know your area well uh and can get to know you. Uh that's the importance of companies like senior health services that you know are legitimate. Is that is that a fair response?
SPEAKER_04That's completely fair. I mean, you're you know, you're not ever, ever, ever gonna get a call from senior health services unless we are returning your call or you're one of our clients. That that is just the way, that's just the way that it works. You see us at a deal, you give us permission to contact, that's when you'll hear from us. There is one company out there that's got a similar caller ID to us, and it's annoys me that you know, all you know, it just annoys me because it's not us. It's a guy that's got a similar deal, and they just spam call everybody. That is not senior health services. You will never ever get a call from us like that. We don't own a phone room, we don't operate a phone room, we don't deal with phone rooms, and uh, we just feel like that's the right way to do business, and that's how we do it. So you want to deal with credible people, and we certainly work very hard to make sure that we're one of them.
SPEAKER_13Right, absolutely. Well, Justin, as always, we greatly appreciate you coming on, giving us your time this morning. You know, it was a little off the normal schedule, but we appreciate you giving us your time anyways and uh kind of walking us through all this, especially as we're getting closer to to the next election period.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah. Pete, we're we're gonna be dealing with a lot of these things as we get closer just to give people, just to give people a chance to uh to just stay abreast of all this stuff before it starts. Uh, because the better prepared you are, you know what they say, ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And uh, we certainly are are gonna provide you with a lot of prevention. So thanks everybody for listening. Appreciate the venue, Michael. Thank you as always.
SPEAKER_13Absolutely, Justin. And Lord Willing will talk to you again soon. Amen. See you then. With that being said, ladies and gentlemen, if you want to go check out Senior Health Services, you can give them a call at 281-894-7540. That is 281-894-7540, or just go to senior health services.com if you want to learn more. They got videos up, free consultation. It's always free. We didn't highlight that on the show today, but it is always free. They don't charge you, they work with the companies. And so they do that on your behalf. They don't charge you a dime. Uh, they make sure that you're getting the best plan that's well suited to you. So if you have any questions, right, about scammers, about, hey, what do I do? Hey, what's coming on? Hey, when's when's the period? I forgot. Any of those sorts of questions at all, just give them a call. 281-894-7540. But I have and again, that is the importance of of dealing with local people who actually care about you, right? That used to be the way that companies operated in general, and now this profit completely profit-driven model has kind of messed a lot of that up. But
ICE Arrest In Spring And Repeat Entries
SPEAKER_13now I I want to I want to take it back a step because we launched the show this morning talking about ICE and this ICE involvement shooting that happened on Tuesday. We got another piece of news coming out about ICE, completely unrelated, by the way, except in the sense that they're both connected by being ICE operations. And that is an enforcement operation involving the U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement at a spring residence yesterday, which resulted in the arrest of a man with prior deportations, according to federal officials. The operation unfolded uh in the chancel subdivision. Neighbors said that ICE agents arrived at the home around eight A.M. and repeatedly used loud horns and other devices in an attempt to get someone inside to come out. They said no one initially responded that agents remained at the home until about eleven AM. In a statement, ICE identified the man as Jorge Eric Lopez de la Peña, a Mexican national. The agency said he was arrested during a targeted enforcement operation. According to ICE, Lopez de la Peña entered the United States in November of 2009 on a B-2 tourist visa and remained in the country after his authorized stay expired. ICE said that it first encountered him in the Harris County jail in 2011. An immigration judge ordered his removal in January of 2012, and he was removed from the United States the following month. This would have been 14 years ago. ICE said he later re-entered the country without authorization in the same year, 2012, and was removed again eight years later, in August of 2020, after being arrested by the agency a second time. Federal officials said he again returned to the United States without authorization. ICE also said Lopez de la Peña has prior convictions for assault, causing bodily injury to a family member and interfering with an emergency request for assistance. The agency said that he remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings. And they have not released additional details about the operation. But again, this is this is the importance of a couple of things. I actually had a pretty cool experience yesterday, uh two different ones. One, I got to go to an absolutely phenomenal event over at PetraCares. Uh they just opened up a brand new facility. They do seven-week training uh for those who are aging out of the foster care system, those who are um in in really horrible positions um to give them assistance, give them aid, build them up, encourage them, and give them, put them on the pathway to to legitimate success in their lives, to become productive members of society. Uh it was pretty incredible to hear the stories, see the testimonies, even meet people uh who have been through the program and how it's changed their lives. It was it was really an awesome opportunity. But
Talking Gun Rights With Teens
SPEAKER_13I also had the opportunity to go earlier in the day um and attend this filmmaking camp. It was a filmmaking camp runs of the summer for uh uh teenagers in the Houston area. And it was their their I don't want to say their final project, but their overall project in this filmmaking class is to make a film. Right? They they learn all the tactics and strategies and all that sort of stuff, uh, but all of that kind of goes into their actual overarching project. And this project was a documentary this year. And the documentary that they were doing was on gun violence. Which I think is is kind of a super ambiguous term. You don't really know what it means. Uh what's what's gun violence? I couldn't tell you uh because guns don't do violence, people do violence, and they use any tool to do it, it's just violence. But nevertheless, uh they they are doing a documentary on this, and of course, we probably know the slant, you can probably guess. But they wanted someone, and much of their Credit, they wanted someone on uh from the other side of the political aisle of the of this particular argument. They wanted someone to come on who was going to defend gun rights, uh, who did not believe that guns were the cause of violence and that regulations would be not only unsuccessful, but immoral and a violation of God-given rights. And so I went on as a sort of representative for Gun Owners of America and and of course as as the radio host here at the station, I got to go speak to those kids. They asked me questions. This is like 30 to 45 minutes of just talking to these teenagers, uh, getting asked questions about what they believed. One of I random tangent, but I do want to mention that that I one of the one of the craziest things was that, you know, as people get out of school, they tend to forget some of the knowledge they get in school. That's just inevitable. You can't help that. You can continue to study once you're out, but a lot of times you're gonna lose some of what you learned, right? If you ask somebody in their, in their, even in their 30s or 40s, to recite some of the the different, you know, math formulas that they may have had memorized, you know, 10, 20 years ago, they're they're likely not gonna remember some of them. That's just expected. Same thing with history. But one of the crazy things was that the the historical illiteracy that was on display, and I'm not trying to call anybody out, but you have to remember um that the the they kind of came to me and they said, Hey, why do you believe the Second Amendment applies to this? Why do you believe the Second Amendment still applies today? And I explained that it's, you know, uh given to the people by God and enshrined as a barrier to the government coming in and revoking your rights, that they are God-given rights that cannot be stripped away. One of the crazy things that I got as a reply was that the um the Bill of Rights, the Second Amendment, was actually to protect us from the British. That was the goal. Now I'll remind everyone that may not know that may not remember, but the Bill of Rights was not ratified until eight years, more than eight years after the end of the Revolutionary War. The Bill of Rights had approximately zero to do with any sort of protection from the British. The Bill of Rights and our Constitution in general was a protection against our government, the one we were forming. It was a it was a guideline, it wasn't a military strategy textbook for how we were dealing uh with the Revolutionary War. It was a it was a rights-oriented document to prevent tyranny in our new government. That was the point of it. It was eight years later. And so I told him, I said, Yeah, that this had nothing to do with the British. That's a random tangent. I just wanted to highlight that that's the kind of stuff I was dealing with. But one of the other things that we kind of went over that we kind of talked about in in this particular case was this understanding, right, that that if you don't have enforcement of already existent law, then other things aren't gonna matter. Uh because they they asked me if I thought that going into impoverished communities where violence is the the the very highest, where a vast majority of these crimes are coming out of, right? It's something like 85% of crimes are being done by repeat offenders. They said, so it's obviously happening in these same communities. Could we go into those communities and take their firearms away? And I said, first of all, you you can't do that. It'd be a very clear violation of our God-given rights. Uh it also would be wildly unsuccessful. I'm not even sure how you would broach doing it. We're gonna go into these, you know, low-income communities and target these people and take their guns away. Not a good idea. I don't even know how you would even begin to do that from a government perspective, even if it wasn't just a God-given right, but it is. But furthermore, one of the things that I highlighted was that's not gonna fix the problem because the problem is much deeper than that. The problem is that we already have laws designed to defend us. We already have safety laws. That's not the issue. The the laws are not the problem, it's the enforcement of them. It is it is the adherence to justice that is the problem. And you can see this on display in this story, right? We have these people who are coming across the border, hopping the border, and it's it's not that we didn't deport them ever, right? It's not just mass deportations that are the problem. It was mass deportations in conjunction with a secure border. The deportation is just a waste of time and money if the border is not secured as well. If we don't have the cumulative effort all across the immigration sphere. If you have great deportations, but you have a completely in unsecured border, you're gonna get nowhere. You're gonna find that the results are basically meaningless. They're gonna do almost nothing because the point doesn't fix the problem. The solution isn't an actual fix. It's just a timeout, it's a pause. Well, we can deport him and he'll stay gone for a couple of months. He'll stay gone maybe for a year, and then he'll be back, and we'll have to do it all over again. This only works if our government agencies are working together to provide a wholesale approach to the problem. And that's consistently the issue, is that you don't have this sort of interagency cooperation. You don't have government entities working together. And I'm not saying we don't have checks and balances where they're all the same agency. It's not what I'm saying at all. Uh, but where you have a level of cooperation where everyone benefits one another, right? That's that's how everything works. It's take and give, and it's making sure that everyone is doing the job they're called to do. You can have the best marketing person in the world on your staff, but if your company is being run like hot garbage, uh, the marketing is gonna do nothing for you. You have to fix the company first. And so it's very important that we understand what's happening and what's been happening at our border is a travesty. It is a destruction of national sovereignty. Right? That's why I got a little heated last hour talking about how the president of Mexico wants to lecture us and and and threaten us with legal action because uh, you know, one of the one of our citizens was killed by your agents. Yeah, your citizen was in our country, on our soil, under our jurisdiction. How about you don't let them come here then? Right? Because this is the problem. You allowed the mass immigration of migrants into our country. You allowed that. That's your border. That's your side. They came through your side and then they came through ours. That's your problem. And so whatever happens over here, that's on us, sure. But you don't get to threaten us because this problem has been facilitated by you for, at this point, decades. And we've tried to cooperate with you. We've tried to convince you to just do your job, to, to be the barrier on your side. We'll deal with our side, you deal with yours. But you threw it in our face, you allowed these migrants to come over in mass amounts, and our government did too, by the way. Our government stabbed us right in the back. I'm not denying that our government was good and theirs was bad. Uh, especially if you look at the Obama administration, you look at the Joe Biden administration, you look at Kamala Harris's as the borders are, you look at all these things. We know very clearly how poorly all of that was run, intentionally, by the way, uh, to produce the chaos that we have today. They wanted it. They want it very, very badly. They want it back. They want that chaos and a lack of law and order and a lack of justice. And so it's not gonna work. I keep saying, yeah, the executive orders are great, and it is putting a pause. Yeah, the border is not being overrun anymore. Yeah, we haven't had any border crossings in a very long time, but that's not gonna matter at all if these things don't get codified into law. And that's why it's very important that we have these checks and balances. It's also why it's very important that we're calling our representatives, that we're calling our senators, that we're saying, hey, you have a job to do to defend our country, to defend our national sovereignty, and to defend our border. And no matter how many people we deport, that border gets opened up again. It's literally going to be ultimately meaningless. It is going to have been a pause for a matter of days. It is going to be a pause for the four years that Trump was in office, or maybe eight years if we get the next whoever it is. But God forbid we get another Democrat in, which is inevitable. And it's, it's, it's just so unbelievable to me that we can't seem to get any of this stuff codified into law. Now, with that being said, when we get back from the break, we're going to talk about some more things. But before we go, I actually we got a text in, I want to read it. It says, Good morning, Michael. I think it's awesome you had the opportunity to speak to these young people. I'm willing to bet you made a lasting positive impression on some of them. Thank you for presenting the truth to them. Yeah, and I did my very best. One of the things that I do believe I have a talent for, right? And I don't I don't often say, you know, oh, I have a talent for this. But it's by the grace of God, God gave it, you know, and it's it's a talent that He gave me for the position that I'm in. One of the things that I do feel that I'm I'm actually quite good at is being able to converse with basically anyone about basically anything without without diving into anger and frustration and resentment. Um, I feel like I'm I'm I'm I I enjoy being able to talk to people who I don't agree with. Um, and I I like to do that. I think it's good for everybody to do that. I don't think it's good to end up in an echo chamber where you're not impacting anybody else. Uh, it really was a great opportunity. I don't want to harp too much on the young people for them to even be in the position to be researching this stuff in the first place, and for them to specifically request to hear from the other side, making this documentary, is already great news. They desired to say, hey, it's not fair if we're only going to present one side of the argument, we at least got to hear from the other side. And they asked great questions. Uh, even though they didn't know, they at least were asking about the Second Amendment. They were asking about why rights are important. They were asking questions about what would actually solve the problem. And and, you know, we went over, again, it was 30 to 45 minutes, so I can't cover all the stuff that we covered, but it really was such a great opportunity to speak to these people who are growing and learning and and and being educated. And to get that opportunity was uh was a massive blessing. Uh it was it was one of the highlights of my day, one of the highlights of my week, actually, uh to get to talk to these young people and answer their questions, everything from, you know, statistics, global solutions. We talked about El Salvador. I brought up El Salvador, I said, hey, if it were guns and El Salvador took their their homicide rate from 100 per 100,000 down to 1.3, lower than the U.S., by the way, by a significant margin now, despite having prior been 20 times higher, but they didn't ta change any of their gun policies, then what changed? And I explained that, well, it's the criminal justice system. It's it's and we know this because when 85% of our of our homicides are coming from repeat offenders, and when 50% of them are coming from kids under I say kids, but those under the age of twenty-five, and so many are coming from fatherless homes and broken, impoverished communities, and something like sixty percent of them are being done while either under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Well, there's clearly a specific thread. And it's none of the threat, the thread is not related to guns because guns have re uh in terms of guns per person have remained relatively unchanged for the past 60 years. And yet the graph has gone up and it's gone down and it's gone back up and it's gone back down in terms of homicides. You wouldn't expect that if it were the guns. There's something else. And you wouldn't expect the solutions that are working in a place like El Salvador to work if it's the guns, primarily leading this problem. So yeah, it was it was a great opportunity. I really enjoyed it. They weren't super combative, right? They disagreed with me a couple times, but it was not a super combative conversation. It was very open-ended. It was uh it was it was it was really great. I really did enjoy it. It was it was a lot of fun. Um, but like I said, when we get back, and thanks so much for texting in, by the way, I appreciate it very much.

SPEAKER_13Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative here on Patriot Talk 920. Before we go into this story on this left-wing, you know, situation with this film festival, we got a text in it says, I listened to you while exercising and cleaning in the morning. It's so good to hear that you are getting out and sharing your thoughts and beliefs with the next generation coming up that probably have not heard the true historical take on our wonderful country. God bless you and your endeavors, and here's hoping you got some new listeners that will continue to hear the truth. I greatly appreciate that. Again, that's that's always been my goal. Ever since I launched the show, I said, Look, I know I don't want to be cliche and say, I'm gonna say things the others won't. But I I am. I'm gonna say what I believe the truth to be. I'm gonna speak the objective truth, even if it lands me in hot water or it lands me in trouble. I'll often take positions that are a little more mainstream now than when I first started speaking. They they've the the right has actually become further right over the past few years, if you've not been paying attention. And so the things that I was saying, you know, when I first started a couple years ago are drastically less radical today than they were when I first started saying them. My beliefs haven't changed, by the way. I was calling for certain moratoriums on immigration and changing the policy to pre-heart seller, all of these things. I've been calling for that for years. And so it's not new. It's not uh it's not, you know, something that I've just taken up, but it is more, it is more mainstream to hear that position nowadays. Um I I said from the beginning, my my job in this position and my goal in this position is to do what God has called me to do, which is to speak the truth. And if that means trouble, that's okay with me. I don't mind. I don't I don't mind conflict, I don't mind disagreement, I don't mind all the threats that you get. As a result of being in this realm, it is what it is. Uh, but God has called us to be courageous, to not be afraid. And the reality is that that means that sometimes we're gonna have to go and you know speak to rooms of people that we know fundamentally disagree with us. But that God can use those moments as an encouragement for those people. He can use those moments to open people's eyes. That's what he calls us to do, is just to speak the truth. Right? We can't we can't change someone's heart, we can't change their mind, but God can. God does, and he often uses the things that we say to do it. Now, with that being said, appreciate the text in. Let's jump into this story. Taxpayer-funded travel, taxpayer-funded travel took state officials to a European film festival that oh that often advances left-wing cultural narratives, raising concerns, of course, that public dollars are being spent on subsidizing ideological tourism. Instead of any sort of concrete benefit for we the people, right? The job of the government, um, the Texas Film Commission posted online that staff, along with friends from Minnow Mountain and Powerhouse Animation Studios, attended the 2026 Anasi International Animation Film Festival and Market in Anasi, France. The post reads While there, we connected with the global animation industry and represented Texas on an international stage. We were proud to showcase the incredible work of the Texas animation industry. Au revoir, y'all. Which is just, I mean, really? You're you're trying to do a French Texas thing? A revoir, y'all. I okay. The uh the Annecy Festival is considered the world's leading festival dedicated to animation film. According to its website, the event is intended to gather the biggest names in the sector and celebrate creative and diverse animation styles and techniques, included in this year's lineup of animated works for several, several that pushed progressive cultural narratives, including LGBT themes. One example is Lesbian Simulator, an interactive virtual reality artwork and video game that the festival website says immerses the user in the experiences of a lesbian girl and serves as an ode to sexual orientation and love with a serious issue, the discrimination that lesbians still face today. You also have another one. It was called Zaza Zaderna. I I'm hoping it's it's literally Z-SA Z-S-A-Z-A-T-U-R-N-A-H. Zaza Zadarna was shown and tells the story of Ada, a gay beautician from a small town in the Philippines. When a meteorite crashes to earth, he swallows the stone and transforms into the female superhero, Zaza Zadarna. So it's themes of, you know, not only gay, uh, but of course trans theming. Running alongside the festival is the Annecy International Animation Film Market, a roundtable called Queens and Superheroes, included Avid Lyon Gorin, director of Zazaz Adderna, as well as Marco Nguyen and Nicholas Athane, co-directors of the animated film Jim Queen, which also focuses, of course, on LGBT themes. The roundtable explored how superhero narratives can become powerful vehicles for queer representation. Governor Greg Abbott's press office, which the Texas Film Commission directs media inquiries to, said the commission attended the NSC International Animation Film Festival to promote Texas animation and film production capabilities and to connect Texas-based studios with international opportunities. The press secretary for the governor said staff participated alongside Texas companies to represent the state's growing sector on a global stage. The Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office supports targeted economic development efforts that aim to create jobs and investment in Texas with a rubber oversight of all commission activities. The governor's office declined to provide the cost of the trip, so we don't know. But last year, um, the commission that's over they're, by the way, also responsible for the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program, which was funded by your tax dollars to the tune of $1.5 billion over the course of the next decade. $1.5 billion. It's $150 million a year. No, no, no amount of small change, you know. I I gotta be honest, you know what? This is this is giving me flashbacks to Lena Hidalgo attending these conferences and saying, well, it's for the benefit of the taxpayers, you know. And you're thinking, it looks like uh you just took a vacation. I I would love for you to provide if taxes can come out and provide me tangible results and show the economic benefit that we directly got as a result of that trip, fine. Beneficial, sure. But as it stands right now, you won't tell us the cost. saying it's for economic development, but we don't see the economic development. And you're attending what is very clearly a left-leaning conference, a left-winning festival. I I all I can really take away from that is it looks like you took a paid trip on the taxpayer's dime to have a good time at a left-wing festival. That's that's what it looks like then that's because that's what it is. That's what happened. Now, again, if you can provide proof that there was some sort of you know, oh well actually we did get a lot of a lot of benefits. We did get a lot of new business opportunities. We actually did get some specific growth and we have numbers to back that up. Okay, we can talk about that. But as it stands now, the unknown trip cost, this this feels like a Hidalgo moment. I'm sorry. That's what this feels like. This feels like Lena Hidalgo trying to take a vacation on your dime. It feels like the exact same thing. With that being said, we can get back from the break this may be the last story of the morning just because we're gonna have a short segment but I want to make sure that we give this time. When we get back we're gonna talk about Gina Hino so you guys know the Democrat candidate for governor of Texas uh really desiring to beat out Governor Greg Abbott. And uh she's now proposing a new campaign proposal. That is specifically $1,500 checks for every Texas household if she are if she were to win the election. We'll talk about that promise after we get back from the break. As always if you would like to text into the show the number is 713 77978. That is 713 779 KYST you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative. I'm your host Michael Wilson and Lord Willing I'll be right back after the break.

SPEAKER_10Patriot Talk 920 is your Houston base stamp for the America first movement.
SPEAKER_13I'm Todd Starns and join me weekdays at 11 on Patriot Talk 920 and online at PatriotTalk920.com I'm your host Michael Wilson and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative State Representative Gina Hinahosa is making affordability the centerpiece of her campaign for governor unveiling a proposal
$1,500 Checks And Rainy Day Fund
SPEAKER_13to send every Texas household a one time fifteen hundred dollar payment if she is elected in November. Now Hinahosa the Democrat nominee for governor announced the plan this week during a campaign stop here in Houston calling it a corruption tax refund and saying that Texans deserve to benefit from the state's record savings instead of watching the money sit unused. Under the proposal the payments would be funded by drawing 17 billion dollars from Texas's economic stabilization fund commonly known as the Rainy Day Fund. The fund held a record $24.8 billion as of November of twenty twenty five according to the Texas Tribune. Now Hinahouse's campaign estimates the plan would leave roughly $10 billion in reserves after the payments are made she said the government is broken. It is more right now a burden than a help for people that changes when I'm governor. Hinahouse said she would declare affordability an emergency on her first day in office and ask lawmakers to approve the plan, arguing that Texans are struggling with rising costs, high rates of uninsured residents and financial hardship. Of course the proposal faces significant legislative hurdles any withdrawal from the rainy day fund for purposes other than addressing a budget shortfall requires approval from two thirds or both of both chambers of the Texas legislature. And as you know Republicans currently control both the House and the Senate even if that changes again getting two thirds going to be a a a tight order for the left. Meanwhile Governor Greg Abbott has continued to focus his campaign on tax relief, proposed eliminating school property taxes for homeowners and placing tighter limits on annual property appraisal increases. They're of course going to be debating and going into the November general election as she's seeking to become the first Democrat elected Texas governor in more than thirty years. But this is it, right? And look, can I I can I be I'm asking if I am allowed to be honest. Of course I am this my show and I'm always honest. I always ask but it doesn't matter because I'm gonna be this Gina's a proposal maybe maybe one of the clearest examples yet of of just how unserious and laughable the modern Democrat Party has become even on things like basic economics specifically on basic economics her big idea her big grand idea for affordability because let's can we all be honest and say that the affordability crisis is real like the average age of a homeowner now is is something like 40 years old. That's not good, right? Young people, one of the biggest barriers and this is for better or for worse, it's it's actually not true. You don't need to own a home to have kids I've proven that over and over and over again. But a lot of people feel like I I should own a home before I have kids. When the average age of a home buyer is 40 years old if when that's when that becomes the new normal you have to wonder is that also part of the reason why it's becoming less and less frequent for people to have kids if they're waiting until they're in their 30s and 40s to even start a family a lot of people are just not going to have kids at all or they're gonna have one child that's well below replacement levels. It's it's extinction level birth rate problems. And part of that is the affordability crisis. They feel like they can't afford things as it is why would I want to bring a child into that first of all and how do I know I'm gonna be able to provide well for that child should I bring a child into that in the first place? Right? These are fair concerns. Even if I disagree with them, they're fair reasons to be concerned. And so we can all acknowledge there is an affordability crisis in groceries and in gas and in cost of goods and in housing prices and taxation as well by the way taxes continually going up. And so there is a real level of concern. So we all need to understand affordability is facing a lot of people that's a large part of the reason why again for the worse Zoran Mamdani won in New York City because a lot of the campaign was on the affordability crisis for those who lived there. Hey I'm gonna I'm gonna do uh price control on your rent I'm gonna freeze your rent we may even have government instituted grocery stores so that you can afford to buy your groceries. Right? These may be socialist policies but for a group of people that doesn't understand the history of socialism and just wants a way out of the current economic crisis they see hope. And they're wrong and they're being manipulated and they're uninformed but that's what's happening. The problem is when you deal with affordability there are good ways to go about it and there are bad ways to go about it. And her big idea for the affordability crisis for what's going on here is not to say cut spending no no no it's not to lower taxes permanently and say hey taxes have gotten out of control. Spending is out of control we need to fix this problem. Uh no we're not going to reduce regulation the barriers to entry for people starting their own businesses, tax breaks, all those things. No, none of that, right? Let's not unleash energy and and get back to the the roots of things that actually we know were successful. Or how about let's limit local government's ability to crush homeowners with rising appraisals, which is a big massive problem that we're seeing this continually uppity up of the tax rate and of the appraisal value of your home that drives taxes up. No, none of that. No, no instead let's take $17 billion out of our state's rainy day fund for emergencies and mail every household in Texas a one-time $1500 check. That is not an affordability plan. Can I can I say it is not an affordability plan. That is a campaign mailer I'm gonna give you I'm gonna pay you $1500 if you vote for me. It's it's it's literally bribery. It is political bribery is what this looks like it looks like you're buying votes. Elect me governor and I'll send you a big fancy check. That's that's the pitch she can dress it up as a corruption tax refund all she wants and call it whatever she wants but the structure is very simple right take money from our state savings account and hand it out while people are struggling and hope that voters kind of confuse this temporary high they're getting from the excitement of getting an extra $1,500 with re any sort of real economic relief. And and that is what total financial illiteracy looks like is Gina Hinahosa. The Rainy Day Fund, I gotta tell you, is not a progressive campaign slush fund for whatever you want to use it for. It is supposed to be a reserve for emergencies, disasters and budget shocks and grid problems and and the border crisis and hurricanes and other any any other on the list of the major state needs that we could run into. You don't know what's going to happen tomorrow or next week or next month. And it's nice to have some money in reserves and the reason that people are drowning the reason that people are having an affordability crisis in the first place is not because we have $24 billion in our rainy day fund. It's because we're funding $1.5 billion to left-wing film companies that aren't even rooted in Texas it's because we're consistently you know spending more than we should be it's because of you know well we we we want research being done by the state so we're gonna spend hundreds of millions of dollars and constitutionally enshrine research into things like Alzheimer's I get it Alzheimer's research is great. My grandmother died from Alzheimer's I would love to see research into the disease how about we have private companies do that like it used to work how about we have communities do that incentivize individuals through capitalism instead of the state again pulling hundreds of millions of dollars in all these cases from the people right the Renny Day fund is not for your pet project to get votes right it's it's and for what? This is the funniest part of this this is this is the most illiterate part. You're doing all of this you're you're draining out our savings account that's being saved for an emergency that that could happen tomorrow and you're doing it for $1500 one time right that might help a family for a month right maybe maybe less in in this economy that's rent groceries insurance car repair or or maybe a few utility bills that's and that that's it right then it's gone. And after it's gone what's different are property taxes lower is there any sort of long term relief is housing more affordable are are grocery prices going down is the insurance market and and fraud fixed no no no is government smaller no not at all none of those things are fixed it is a it is a it is a all it's an already used band-aid that trying to take away an infection it's it's it's a band-aid that maybe helps for a month some people that's it right this is the same mentality that has wrecked blue cities and blue states across the country and I don't want it here $1500 we're gonna drain our savings account so that people can have $1500 and I know that that's some money that's gonna be gone in a month or two even even for for people who are who are pretty good. It's gonna be gone and then you're gonna have a Democrat mayor or a Democrat governor with all of the other insane policies that follow it you're gonna have less money in our emergency reserves you're still gonna be paying more money every month because she's not going to fix the tax problem. It's just not going to happen. Also that you got a one-time payment of $1500 if you support that if you think that that makes any sort of financial sense at all then of course you're gonna vote for someone like Gina Hinahosa. That's the kind of people that are going to vote for someone like Gina Hinahosa.
