And it's just such a like an aggressive looking.

And it's been in so many films and TV shows and video games.

It's part of the culture.

Yeah, so before we get too far. I mean, you said it's iconic and it's been in all this stuff, but for someone who's maybe you know doesn't have a Countach poster on their wall.

Right.

Like how would you sum up like its place in history?

Speaker 3 1:35

Well, I think it represents a sort of an era of excess. You know, it's very much a child of the 70s and 80s, when everything was big and bold and brash.

Yeah, yeah, and I know that it was designed by.

Speaker 3 1:51

Marcello Gandini. Marcello Gandini, and now he also designed some other like pretty famous vehicles too, right, yeah, he designed the Miura, which was another Lamborghini, and also he designed the Lancia Stratos, which is a rally car. Okay, yeah, I mean, the guy was a genius and All very distinctive looking cars, all very distinctive looking. That's right yeah.

So what made the Countach stand out from other supercars, like when it was first revealed?

Speaker 3 2:18

Well, I think it was the shape it's got this incredibly radical wedge shape design, which was completely unlike anything that had come before. You know, it made other supercars look kind of you know ordinary.

Right, and you know, I think we should probably mention that it debuted as a prototype.

Speaker 3 2:32

Yes.

Speaker 2 2:33

Back in 1971 at the Geneva Motor Show.

That's right, yeah, and then it went into production in 1974 and stayed in production right through to 1990.

So for a good long time, yeah, people were able to get a hold of these things 16 years. And I think even the name Countach is kind of part of its mystique, like where does that name even come from?

Speaker 3 2:54

Well, it's actually an exclamation of astonishment in the Piedmontese dialect, which is spoken in the region of Italy where Lamborghini is based. Okay, and the story goes that one of the Lamborghini factory workers saw the prototype for the first time and exclaimed Countach. And it kind of stuck.

Okay, so it's like the first reaction to seeing this thing.

Yeah, I mean, can you imagine it was like nothing anyone had ever seen before?

Speaker 2 3:20

Right.

Speaker 3 3:20

So it's a great story and it's a great name for a car All right.

So let's get into some of these iconic design elements of the Count Tash Sure, starting with those scissor doors. Yeah, they're kind of the thing, right, I mean, if you think, countach.

That's the signature feature.

Yeah.

Yeah, absolutely.

And they look cool.

They do.

But they're not just there to look cool right, there's actually a practical reason behind them.

Well, the Countach is an incredibly wide car and conventional doors just wouldn't have worked. You know, they would have needed a huge amount of space to open oh, I see, so it's almost like so the upward opening doors solved that problem, but of course they looked amazing as well it's like they said hey, we got to make these doors work somehow right what if they went like this yeah, yeah yeah, I mean it was stroke of genius and it became part of the car's legend all right, so let's talk about, uh about.

Well, we've got to talk about the engine, right.

Of course, of course.

Speaker 2 4:15

The Lamborghini. So it's got to have, it's got to have a V12.

Speaker 3 4:18

A V12. Yeah.

And not just any V12. Yeah, this thing could pump out.

In the later models it was putting out over 400 horsepower.

Over 400 horsepower yeah.

And it just sounded incredible.

Like you knew when a Comtach was coming.

Oh yeah.

Speaker 2 4:36

You know, blocks away.

It was just, it just sounded so, so good.

Speaker 2 4:40

Yeah, that's awesome. Uh, now I mean, this is a uh, a dream car for a lot of people. But we're looking at some market reports here and this is going to cost a pretty penny to actually get your hands on one.

It is, yeah. I mean, if you want a good one, you're going to have to pay for it.

Yeah.

And you know the older models. You can find them in various conditions and prices. So if you're lucky and you know what you're looking for, you can find a bargain.

Okay.

But if you want a really good one, a pristine example, you know, especially one of the later models, or a special edition, then you're looking at serious money.

Yeah, like we're seeing some, some prices here that are just yeah, I mean they're going up in value all the time. Like, really Like, are we talking like hundreds of thousands of dollars? Yeah, yeah, for sure, wow.

I mean some of the really rare ones are going for millions, millions. Yeah, it's crazy.

Okay, so let's say that somebody is thinking about actually getting a Countach.

Speaker 3 5:35

Yeah.

It's not just enough to buy it right. You got to insure this thing, you got to keep it running. What can somebody expect, you know, in terms of those costs?

Speaker 3 5:44

Well, first of all, insurance. You know you're going to be looking at a pretty high insurance group for a Countach.

Okay, now what does that mean? Like when you say insurance group.

Speaker 3 5:54

Well, it's basically a way of categorizing cards according to their risk.

Gotcha.

Speaker 3 5:59

So the higher the group, the more expensive the insurance is going to be.

Speaker 2 6:03

So, like a higher performance, more expensive cars are going to be in a higher group.

That's right, yeah, and the countach, with its performance and its value is going to be in one of the higher right. Yeah, and the Countach, with its performance and its value is going to be in one of the higher groups.

Okay, so that's something to keep in mind.

Definitely.

It's not just the sticker price.

No, that's just the start.

What about things like, you know, fuel efficiency?

Oh well, fuel efficiency wasn't really a priority when they designed the Countach. Right, it's a gas guzzler, Okay, but you know you don't buy a Countach to save money on fuel.

No, you don't buy it for that.

Speaker 3 6:37

You buy it for the experience.

Yeah For the, for the. You know the feeling of it.

For the thrill of it. Yeah, the thrill, yeah.

Okay, and what about maintenance? Uh, you know we're talking about a, uh, a supercar here, a very exotic vehicle, very exotic. Yeah, it's a complex machine. I imagine that can't be cheap to maintain.

No, it's not. It's not. You need to find a specialist who knows these cars inside out.

And you're going to need to be prepared to pay for the best parts.

Because you know you don't want to cut corners with a car like this.

No, no, definitely not.

And then there's road tax, which can also be quite high.

Again, depending on the model.

Right yeah, so lots of costs to factor in.

It's not a cheap car to run.

Not a cheap car to run, but if you can afford. Um, what are some? Some red flags, some things they should watch out for, uh, especially if they're looking at a used one.

Well, I think the biggest thing is to get a pre-purchase inspection by a specialist who knows these cars inside out?

Right.

Speaker 3 7:50

Because, you know, there are some things that can go wrong with them, right? Uh, particularly with the older models.

Okay, yeah, like what kind of things? What should we be looking out for?

Speaker 3 8:06

Well, the early Countax were notorious for their electrical problems.

Speaker 2 8:08

It was a combination of Italian electrics and you know, seventies technology, Maybe not the greatest combination.

Speaker 3 8:13

Not the best combination. No, yeah. So you could be driving along and suddenly your headlights would go out or your wipers would stop working or your gauges would start dancing all over the place. It was all part of the experience. But you know, if you're spending a lot of money on a car, you don't want to be dealing with those kind of problems. So get a pre-purchase inspection, Definitely, yeah. And the later models? They're generally more reliable, but they have their own complexities, particularly with the engine management systems, which were quite advanced for their time. So again, you need a specialist who knows what they're doing.

So we've talked a lot about the Countach, but it got me thinking.

If somebody wasn't going to get a Countach, what are some other supercars from that era that might appeal to them?

Speaker 3 9:01

Well, if you wanted something that was more, you know, focused on raw power, there was the Ferrari Testarossa. Okay, you know, it's got a flat 12 engine. Yeah, it's a very dramatic looking car. Yeah, but some people say it lacks the aggression of the Countach.

Yeah, I could see that it's a bit more, you know, refined, yeah.

Speaker 3 9:18

The aggression of the Count Hatch yeah, I could see that it's a bit more, you know refined, yeah, a bit more understated.

Speaker 2 9:21

It's a different kind of statement.

Yeah.

What else? What else comes to mind?

Well, if you wanted something that was more, you know, technologically advanced, there was the Porsche 959.

It was a real technological tour de force.

It had all-wheel drive, uh, it had advanced aerodynamics. It was incredibly capable on both the road and the track.

Okay, um, but again, it's a very different car to the countach yeah it's more, uh, you know, understated yeah, but I I gotta say like nothing has quite the same presence as a countach no, absolutely not like you see a count I know what it is.

Yeah, that's a good question.

Like what will be the car that comes along and just completely redefines what's possible.

I don't know.

But I'm excited to find out.
