Vitality Unleashed: The Functional Medicine Podcast
From Fixing Symptoms To Rewriting Biological Time
What if your clean annual physical is missing the signals that matter most? We unpack a three-level roadmap to build real health span: stabilize overt issues, uncover hidden drivers of inflammation and decline, and then measure and slow your true rate of aging with cutting-edge epigenetic tools. Along the way, we share how leading longevity clinics are standardizing care with data you can act on today.
We start by challenging the reactive limits of conventional screening and explain why toxins, gut dysfunction, and cellular nutrient deficits often slip through standard panels. You’ll hear how comprehensive toxin burden tests detect heavy metals, molds, and PFAS—and how the results point to specific binders, source control, and excretion strategies. Then we dive into gut mapping and advanced food reaction panels to spot dysbiosis, leaky gut, and slow-burn immune triggers that affect mood, metabolism, and recovery. From there, we zoom out to systemic insight: cardio particle profiling and cardiogenetics to see beyond LDL, and neuroinflammation testing that checks blood-brain barrier integrity and autoantibodies linked to brain fog and future cognitive risk.
With the foundations set, we turn to level three: epigenetics and biological aging clocks. We break down biological age versus chronological age, the pace-of-aging “speedometer,” and organ-specific aging scores that reveal where to target interventions first. These metrics transform guesswork into a measurable plan, letting you confirm whether nutrition, training, sleep, and targeted therapies are truly slowing your aging. We also talk rigor—CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited labs and advanced tech ensure results you can trust—and the rising role of AI as a clinical co-pilot that will synthesize multi-omic data and deliver proactive care at home.

Stay Informed, Stay Healthy:
Remember, informed choices lead to better health. Until next time, be well and take care of yourself.
Welcome back to the deep dive. Today, our mission is well, it's pretty laser focused. We are diving into the next generation of health diagnostics.
SPEAKER_00:Right. The tools that conventional medicine often overlooks.
SPEAKER_01:Exactly. And these are the things that really hold the key to long-term health span.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And if you've ever felt that your, you know, your annual physical just missed something fundamental, you're not wrong.
SPEAKER_01:It feels that way sometimes.
SPEAKER_00:Traditional lab tests are. They're really just reactive. And they're insurance driven. So they're designed to find a problem only when it's already severe.
SPEAKER_01:When it's obvious.
SPEAKER_00:When it's obviously broken and probably needs a prescription. Today, we're looking at the science that's designed to pinpoint issues lurking in the shadows.
SPEAKER_01:Aaron Powell So the underlying stuff, chronic inflammation, toxic burdens, all that.
SPEAKER_00:Aaron Powell All of it. The cellular dysfunction that's really driving the aging process.
SPEAKER_01:Aaron Powell And to really understand these advanced tests, it seems like you need a bit of a philosophical shift.
SPEAKER_00:You do.
SPEAKER_01:True wellness, it's built-in phases, right? We can kind of distill this down into a pretty powerful three-step approach that guides the whole thing.
SPEAKER_00:Aaron Powell That phased approach is absolutely essential. It manages expectations and it it gives you a clear path. Yeah. So level one is where everyone has to start. Fix the obvious. Okay. This just means using the best of traditional medicine to stabilize or treat, you know, an overt disease. Uncontrolled diabetes, severe hypertension, acute infections, you have to tackle those first.
SPEAKER_01:If you're physically broken, you fix the broken pieces.
SPEAKER_00:Exactly.
SPEAKER_01:And only then you can move to level two. This is what we're really focusing on today, right? The dig deeper phase. Right.
SPEAKER_00:This is the investigative phase. This is where we use those advanced tests to uncover all the non-obvious hidden chronic issues that are just draining your vitality and frankly accelerating your biological clock.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, so that sets the stage for the third level.
SPEAKER_00:And that prepares you for level three, actively working to reverse biological age.
SPEAKER_01:Now, this is the really exciting part.
SPEAKER_00:It is. But we have to be really clear here. Level three is it's exclusive. You can't just jump into advanced age reversal protocols if you haven't mastered level one and two.
SPEAKER_01:Right. So you can't just walk in with a ton of money and expect a quick fix.
SPEAKER_00:No. Think about someone who is, say, 65 years old, maybe dependent on oxygen from decades of smoking, carrying an extra hundred pounds, dealing with an HBA1C of 11. They are biologically unstable.
SPEAKER_01:You're not reversing age at that point. You're managing a crisis.
SPEAKER_00:Exactly. Level three requires demonstrated commitment and a stable platform to build on. It's for the folks who have truly conquered the fundamentals.
SPEAKER_01:You have to build the foundation before you can even think about the penthouse. That makes perfect sense. So that context is vital, but let's, you know, address the elephant in the room. This type of medicine, some people still label it fringe.
SPEAKER_00:They do.
SPEAKER_01:But the scientific community is taking it very seriously. You were recently at the third round table of longevity clinics. What's giving this the scientific weight it needs?
SPEAKER_00:Well, that round table was hosted at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging.
SPEAKER_01:Which is a huge deal.
SPEAKER_00:It's a massive indicator. It is the world's first independent biomedical research institute that is solely dedicated to the science of longevity. So having leading clinics and Dr. Kumar connecting there, exchanging data, it confirms this is moving from theory to applied clinical science and fast.
SPEAKER_01:So what were the big themes? It sounds like they're trying to standardize a field that's just exploding.
SPEAKER_00:Absolutely. The whole discussion was about defining gold standards. We talked at longevity diagnostics, biological clocks, the role of epigenetics, and you know, how we integrate things like AI into the client journey. The vision coming out of the Buck Institute is crystal clear. We have to move beyond just treating disease after it shows up. Instead, we have to use that connection between genetics, lifestyle, and environment to define personalized solutions for health scan optimization.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, so if those are the gold standards the experts are chasing, let's look at the actual tools. Let's get right into level two, uncovering those hidden issues. For someone listening, why should they care about level two when, you know, their cholesterol looks fine on their standard physical because conventional tests are frankly looking in the wrong places.
SPEAKER_00:Let's start with a huge blind spot: toxin burden.
SPEAKER_01:Okay.
SPEAKER_00:We live in a profoundly chemical world, and toxins, heavy metals, molds, plastics, they don't just disappear because your doctor isn't measuring them. They are quietly driving chronic inflammation.
SPEAKER_01:Aaron Powell And the tests that are available now, they're incredibly revealing, right? We're talking about comprehensive panels like the total tox burden test. Yeah. What can you actually track with that?
SPEAKER_00:Aaron Ross Powell We can test for specific heavy metals for mycotoxins, which are these dangerous toxins from molds that can really impact your brain.
SPEAKER_01:Aaron Powell I've heard about those.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, and various environmental toxins and crucially PFAS chemicals. The forever chemical. Forever chemical. They're at everything from nonstick pans to firefighting foam.
SPEAKER_01:Yep.
SPEAKER_00:And finding them isn't just data, it's an actionable alert.
SPEAKER_01:Aaron Powell Okay, but if we're testing for things like PFAS that are basically everywhere, how do you avoid just giving someone analysis paralysis? Like what's the practical step after finding a heavy burden?
SPEAKER_00:That's the real insight here. The results dictate the remedy. If we find elevated lead or mercury, we don't just say eat better. We implement specific, personalized binders, targeted supplements, and lifestyle changes to actually clear those out.
SPEAKER_01:So conventional medicine misses that whole step.
SPEAKER_00:They miss the entire intervention because they're not even testing for the burden to begin with.
SPEAKER_01:That makes perfect sense. All right, let's shift to the second pillar of level two: gut health and food reactions. We hear all the time that the gut is central to immunity, but what are these advanced tests telling us that we didn't know five years ago?
SPEAKER_00:We can now map the gut microbiome with forensic level detail. A test like the gut zoomer test isn't just checking for a few bacteria, it analyzes the entire ecosystem.
SPEAKER_01:The whole picture.
SPEAKER_00:The whole picture. We're looking for harmful microbes, markers for leaky gut, that's intestinal permeability, and the balance of bacteria that affect everything from nutrient absorption to how your brain feels.
SPEAKER_01:And dysbiosis, that imbalance, is a huge driver of inflammation.
SPEAKER_00:Aaron Powell A fundamental driver. And that inflammation is so often triggered by foods we eat every single day without even realizing it.
SPEAKER_01:Right.
SPEAKER_00:The sophistication of these food reaction tests now is astounding. We're way beyond just immediate allergies. We have specific panels like the wheat zoomer, soy zoomer, lectin zoomer.
SPEAKER_01:So really targeted.
SPEAKER_00:Very targeted. Yeah. And these tests don't just flag immediate sensitivities. They can identify foods that are causing a quiet, autoimmune or inflammatory response, damaging the gut lining and spiking inflammation of the body.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, they so we've mapped the toxins, we've started repairing the gut. What about the rest of the body? How do these level two diagnostics give us systemic insight that, you know, beats a standard blood panel?
SPEAKER_00:This is where we really get proactive. Advanced tests give you a full body snapshot from just a single sample, and they can detect risks years before they become a symptomatic disease. Wow. For cardiovascular health, for instance, the cardiozumer and cardiogenetics tests look way past basic LDL and HTL. They analyze inflammatory particles, the size and density of your cholesterol, the genetic markers that actually drive plaque. It's a 3D picture of heart risk, not just a flat number.
SPEAKER_01:And what about for neural health? I mean, that's top of mind for everyone as they get older.
SPEAKER_00:We can now assess neural inflammation, which is key to proactive brain health. The Neural Zumer Plus Test and a Neurotransmitters panel, they look at the integrity of your blood-brain barrier. Okay. They look for antibodies targeting specific proteins in your brain. This is critical insight for anyone with brain fog or who just wants to maximize cognitive function. It gives us a roadmap to reduce the risk of long-term neurodegeneration.
SPEAKER_01:And finally, what about the fuel for the system, nutrients, and how the cells are actually functioning?
SPEAKER_00:We can measure cellular health with incredible precision. Tests like the True Health panel track over 105 biomarkers. It goes deep into antioxidants, vitamins, fatty acids.
SPEAKER_01:So much more than just a vitamin D level.
SPEAKER_00:So much more. We use tools like the organic acids test and micronutrient panels to know precisely what fuel your cells are running on. You know, your doctor could tell you to take vitamin D, but if you're deficient at a cellular level because of an absorption issue, we can tailor the intervention to fix that root cause. That's how we act early on high-risk areas.
SPEAKER_01:These level two tools really are like an indispensable map of the terrain before you even start the journey. Exactly. But once that terrain is cleared, this is where it gets really, really interesting. Level three. How do we measure the speed of aging and what role does epigenetics play in all this?
SPEAKER_00:For those who are ready for level three, the focus shifts entirely to that ultimate question: how fast are you aging? And this is all powered by the revolution in epigenetics.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, so let's unpack epigenetics simply. We know it involves changes in how your genes are expressed, but it doesn't actually alter the DNA sequence itself.
SPEAKER_00:Correct. And the key takeaway for anyone listening is this only about 10% of your health is locked in by your inherited genetics. Only 10%. It's just 10%. The empowering news is that the other 90% is controlled by your epigenetics. It's dictated by your environment and your lifestyle choices.
SPEAKER_01:Aaron Powell, which means aging is not a fixed fate.
SPEAKER_00:Not at all. It's manageable, it's measurable, and most importantly, it's reversible.
SPEAKER_01:Aaron Powell And this leads us right to the advanced aging clocks, the tools that quantify that 90%. We're talking about the true age test suite. What are the core actionable metrics we get from these?
SPEAKER_00:There are three main metrics we track. First is the biological age score, or OMIC mage. This is your overall cellular age versus your chronological age. Are you aging faster or slower than the calendar? That's your starting point.
SPEAKER_01:Then there's the second one, which to me is just transformative the pace of aging, or Dundan pace. I call this your biological speedometer.
SPEAKER_00:Aaron Powell That's a perfect analogy. The Dundan pace tracks the rate at which you are aging at the cellular level. If you can slow that speed down, say from 1.0 biological years per chronological year to 0.7, you are fundamentally extending your healthy lifespan.
SPEAKER_01:Aaron Powell And this is the metric that proves the interventions are actually working.
SPEAKER_00:It's a confirmation, yes.
SPEAKER_01:And then the third metric gives us that hyperspecific targeting.
SPEAKER_00:Aaron Powell That's the Symfo and Weiss score. This is the map. It measures the biological age of 11 different organ systems your brain, your heart, your liver, your lungs. If your liver age comes back significantly older than your chronological age, we know exactly where to target our level three interventions.
SPEAKER_01:Aaron Powell That level of detail is just exceptional. And the reports also give you these critical predictive scores, right? Like mortality risk, cancer risk.
SPEAKER_00:Yes, and even scores showing the impact of past lifestyle choices like smoking or alcohol on your cellular machinery.
SPEAKER_01:The practical power of this is just the ability to track your progress. You don't have to hope your new diet is working.
SPEAKER_00:You don't. You measure the impact on your pace of aging. You use science to hold yourself accountable and confirm that your actions are resulting in real biological improvement.
SPEAKER_01:So bringing this all together, level one fixes what's broken, level two maps all the hidden problems, toxins, gut, cellular stuff. And then level three gives us that quantified speed of aging. What does it look like when a provider synthesizes all of this data?
SPEAKER_00:It moves you from, you know, generic wellness advice to personalized precision solutions. The provider takes all of that information: gut health, toxins, hormones, nutrients, cellular age, and designs a single defined path for you to reach your highest potential, your peak health.
SPEAKER_01:This isn't guesswork.
SPEAKER_00:It's data-driven optimization.
SPEAKER_01:And that data has to be absolutely trustworthy if you're going to build a health strategy on it.
SPEAKER_00:Absolutely. The rigor is non-negotiable. These advanced tests are performed in CLIE certified and CIP accredited labs.
SPEAKER_01:So the highest clinical standard?
SPEAKER_00:The highest. It's the same standard used for diagnosing critical illness. They often use proprietary tech like micro arrays and mass spectrometry to make sure it's reliable.
SPEAKER_01:So, what does this all really mean for you, the person listening? It means you actually have the power to shift your health destiny. It means moving your focus from just waiting for disease to show up to actively intervening and using science to take control of your long-term health.
SPEAKER_00:The deepest insights for your longevity, they aren't going to be found in a basic annual physical. They're found in the specialized diagnostics for level two and level three, measuring hidden burdens and defining your precise biological age.
SPEAKER_01:And if we look ahead, building on those discussions from the Book Institute roundtable, there's a final sort of provocative thought that ties all this together.
SPEAKER_00:It's the role of technology. AI is rapidly becoming a fundamental partner in this whole process.
SPEAKER_01:But the co-pilot.
SPEAKER_00:A copilot for a longevity doctor. That's exactly what they're calling it. The conversation now is about how AI agents and exponential tech will synthesize this complex data even faster and potentially deliver, say, 90% of routine preventive care right at home within the next decade.
SPEAKER_01:Which means the time to get your baseline data to use these level two and level three tools is right now. Understanding your risks and optimizing your health today is the most critical prep you can do for that future.
SPEAKER_00:So if you're ready to start your own wellness journey and see where you stand on this three step path to longevity, whether you need to fix what's broken, dig deeper, or measure your biological age, we really encourage you to reach out.
