Practical Strategies for Collaboration

Laurie Bloyer

collaboration matters . Let's kick things off by talking about why this partnership is so crucial . Here's the thing Parents see their child's world at home , while educators see their child's world at school . When these two perspectives come together , they create a full picture of the child , one that helps everyone understand their strengths , challenges and how to support them best , because that's what we all want . Right , think of it as a relay race , right ? One of the parent hands off the baton of insight and the teacher runs with it in the classroom . But what happens when the handoff doesn't go smoothly ? Miscommunication , unmet needs and , honestly , a child who feels caught in the middle . I've seen amazing transformations when parents and teachers build collaborative , strength-based relationships , when they focus on the strengths of the child and have that be the center of attention . Not only does it boost the child's confidence , but it also creates an environment where they feel truly understood , and that is the magic we're aiming for in the collaboration .

Laurie Bloyer

So what are some practical strategies for building this partnership ? How do we actually make this work in real life ? Right , talking about it sounds great , but as a former teacher , now as a learning and life success coach , I really want to make this practical for you . Here's a few steps to help you bridge that gap .

Effective Communication Techniques

Laurie Bloyer

So we want to start with strengths .

Laurie Bloyer

When you sit down with teachers and teachers , when you sit down with parents , begin by celebrating what your child is doing , or what the child is doing really well . This could be their creativity , perseverance or even their ability to connect with others . So , for example , a parent might say to the teacher I've noticed that my child has a unique ability to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions . Have you seen that in the classroom ? This positive framing shifts the focus away from challenges into opportunities . It also encourages teachers to notice and nurture some of those same strengths . And , teachers , you can also do this with the parent . I've noticed that Johnny sits really well when we are reading a story that's very animated . Have you noticed this at home . I think he has really good listening skills , something like that , right , where you both are taking the positive aspect , and then you can ask questions that open doors . So , of course , questions are really powerful , aren't they ? Haha , see what I did there . They invite collaboration rather than defensiveness .

Laurie Bloyer

Here are some practical reframes . Instead of why does my child keep failing tests , try what testing strategies have worked for other kids who learn differently . Can we brainstorm ways to help my child succeed ? So those are some really good ones . Or , as a teacher you might say I've noticed that Johnny's always hungry when he comes in . Aren't you feeding him breakfast ? Two , your son really has a great appetite . Perhaps we can come up with some snacks that would help him keep his energy up throughout the day . Oh , and make sure they're healthy snacks too . So those these approaches really frame the issue as a shared problem , opening the door for innovative solutions while strengthening the relationship .

Laurie Bloyer

You could create a communication plan that works for everyone . So clear , consistent communication is really a game changer . Decide together on a system that works . Do you want to do weekly emails ? Do you want to do a shared online document where you can track progress ? Do you want to do a quick chat , although that's a little more difficult , I know . I know that when my son was little he had a notebook and the teacher would write in the notebook and I would respond in the notebook because we didn't have time to talk . I guess we could have done technology and then a shared online document . That would have been a nice modern feature , but back then the notebook worked just fine . Some days , I'm going to say , it was hard to open the notebook and read what she had to say and I'm sure some days she had challenges reading what I wrote . But it was great to have that communication and I think my son really grew and flourished because we were working together in such a strong partnership to figure out at this stage his anxiety and what was the root of his anxiety . So obviously we want to keep that communication realistic .

Laurie Bloyer

Not a daily email by any stretch of the imagination , just you know . Daily email by any stretch of the imagination . Just you know some way to check in and help support each other . Because I know , as parents and you know I've been a parent for over 20 years , I'm sorry . I've been a teacher for over 20 years , I've been a parent for over 30 . But the the goal is really to help each other out , because we each have pieces of the puzzle that can support our child dramatically . And , of course , we really want to show appreciation , to build those bridges on both sides teachers appreciating all the work parents do , parents appreciating all the work teachers do . So remember , gratitude really goes a long way . Empathy and gratitude being really empathetic about each other . And so we're all managing so much in our lives . So just thank yous and kind words and shared joys , along with the shared pains , are so important . And you could even , you know , add a little tip in there . As you're thanking the parent or the teacher , you could say you know , thank you for trying out that sensory-friendly seating idea for my child . It really made a difference . Or thank you for suggesting that strategy . It really worked well at home . So wonderful ways to add in a little tip in addition to the thank you .

Laurie Bloyer

All right , so it's not all sunshine and rainbows

Handling Challenges and Emotional Regulation

Laurie Bloyer

. Right , there are bumps , there will be challenges as you navigate . We are humans and life happens and frustrations sometimes get the better of us . But let's , just as we talk about our kids managing some of their emotional outbursts , let's talk about ourselves as well . So really make sure that you pause before reacting . Teachers and parents , breathe , take a breath , regulate your emotions . But taking a moment to pause can really help you approach the situation more constructively . And then you might want to write down your frustrations or concerns ahead of time before just blurting them out or throwing them in that shared document . Write them down ahead of time and get clarity through your writing and ask yourself what's the core issue you really want part of a difficult day .

Laurie Bloyer

But that process of calming down right is also demonstrating even if you do it in front of the kids demonstrating your emotional regulation and being a great role model , as well as focusing on solutions rather than emotions , and that empathy is so important , as we all need it because our lives are full full . Instead of thinking , oh , they don't care or they're not doing a good job , just try to remind yourself that they're really probably overwhelmed or don't know what to do or it's been a challenging day . So if you think about it from both perspectives , that would super help . Think about it from both perspectives , that would super help and open the conversation with statements like I know . You're doing your best and I really appreciate that . I love to work together to find a solution for Johnny's running around the classroom , or I really would like your feedback to help me find a way to get Johnny to sit at the kitchen table for dinner or to do the homework that you've given .

Laurie Bloyer

Do you have suggestions and really try to think of those solutions ? It's easy to dwell on what's not working right , but we're here for the child , we're here for solutions , we're here for Johnny to get the best support he can . So try to shift the focus from what's not working to what's working . So if a teacher might say , for example , johnny's disruptive in class , respond with well , what strategies have you tried to help other students stay engaged ? Or what strategies have you tried to help Johnny stay engaged ? Would a movement break or fidget tool help Johnny focus better ? So this really shows that you're involved in finding solutions and that you'd like to collaborate and see what works for the teacher and how they can consider your child in the solutions and if you really need to , if it really comes down to it , don't forget you also have support you could bring in . Sometimes you might need to bring in a counselor . Sometimes you might need to bring in some outside help If you need to involve a specialist or a coach to suggest strategies . We're here for you , so bring us in if you need to . We really don't want to create conflict . We want to make sure that your child gets the best support they deserve . Hopefully that helps with maybe some of the troubles .

Laurie Bloyer

But let's talk about some stories

Success Stories and Takeaways

Laurie Bloyer

, right . Let's talk about a good success story . There was a mom who reached out to me after feeling stuck for months . Her son was labeled a disruptive in class and every meeting with the teacher felt like a dead end . So we worked together on reframing her son's strengths and prepared for the next parent-teacher meeting with that focus . She shared how her son's high energy made him a great team leader during family game nights , and the teacher shared how he was a natural helper in group projects . Together they created a plan to give him more leadership opportunities in class and guess what ? His behavior started improving immediately . This is what happens when we focus on strengths and work together as a team . So you can see how wonderful that would be , just if people started to reframe the way they looked

Resources and Weekly Challenge

Laurie Bloyer

at problems .

Laurie Bloyer

Let's do some resources and takeaways right . I always love to give you guys a quirky little activity to do . In this case , just really some resources to help you . So , first off , I want you to do a little challenge . We've talked about this over the last two episodes of parents writing down and teachers writing down . So I want you to write down three strengths your child has that you can share with their teacher and teachers . Three strengths the child has that you can share with the parents teachers . Three strengths the child has that you can share with the parents . I would love to have you write those down and , in fact , if you really want to take it a step further , three strengths that you see in the parent if things have gotten difficult , and three strengths you see in the teacher . Send a quick email or note to your child's teacher highlighting something you appreciate about their effort , their strength , and also note in there , of course , your child's strengths and what you would like the teacher to focus on as far as your child's strengths . And then maybe you want to brainstorm one collaborative question you want to bring up at your next meeting . So really , that's laying the foundation , the framework for successful communication going forward , those small steps can build that bridge of collaboration and really create a wonderful environment for your child to thrive in the classroom and , depending on what the teacher says for home , thrive at home , creating a wonderful situation .

Laurie Bloyer

Next week we're getting close to Christmas when these episodes come out , so next week we're going to be talking more about the holidays and calming the chaos during those unstructured weeks of vacation .
