Welcome to Neuroquirky Nexus
LaurieHello and welcome back to another episode of the Neuroquirky Nexus . Thank you so much for joining us . As always , I am thrilled to have you here and I hope these tips and tricks and strategies have really been helping you out . Please don't forget to share this episode , or all of the episodes , if you know someone that could really benefit from what I have been sharing with you all . As this episode is released , it's almost Valentine's Day , so I thought it would be really important to do an episode about you , the parent . We're always thinking about our children , but right now I want to do an episode about caring for yourself as a parent of a child with ADHD . So welcome .
LaurieI'm your host of the Neuroquirky Nexus , a podcast where parents of neurodiverse kids navigate life with confidence and calm . Laurie Bloyer , your host and a fellow traveler on this ADHD journey . Today we're talking about something crucial caring for yourself as a parent of a child with ADHD . I know I get it . Self-care can feel impossible when you're constantly managing your child's energy , emotions and executive function . I think you were recording
Why Self-Care Matters
LaurieOkay , good , why ? Self-care matters for parents of kids with ADHD . Raising a child who has ADHD can feel like an Olympic sport Emotionally , mentally and physically demanding . You're not just a parent , you're a coach , advocate , problem solver and emotional anchor . That's a lot , and if you're running on empty , your ability to show up for your child is going to suffer . Think of it this way when you're on an airplane , they tell you to put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others . The same applies here . Your child needs you at your best , but if you're constantly exhausted , overwhelmed , stressed , you are not operating at your full capacity . So let's talk about how to fill your tank , and especially in this time of Valentine's Day and love and care and compassion
Practical Self-Care Tips
LaurieValentine's Day and love and care and compassion I want you to fill your tank . Yeah , self-care , self-care , okay , so what does that mean ? What does self-care mean ? I want you to have a mindset shift . Give yourself grace .
LaurieAdhd parenting is not like typical parenting and you're not failing just because things look different in your household . Let go of guilt and remind yourself you're doing the best you can with the tools you have . Progress over perfection , always over perfection , always . One way to practice self-compassion is through affirmations . Try repeating phrases like I am enough , I am a great parent , I am learning and growing every day and I am capable of seeing the strengths in my child every day . These small mental shifts can help reshape how you view yourself as a parent and how you view your child as well .
Setting Boundaries and Building Support
LaurieAs you know , I'm a real big proponent of strengths-based parenting , but today is all about you .
LaurieSo set boundaries without the guilt . You do not have to say yes to every request , event or therapy session . It's okay to say we're not available for that right now . Protecting your time and energy is an act of love for both you and your child . Set boundaries also means creating realistic expectations with extended family , teachers and friends . If a well-meaning relative offers advice that doesn't align with your child's needs , it's okay to politely say well , thank you for your concern , but we're handling it in a way that works best for our family . That gives so much power to you and your family and your child .
LaurieBuild a support system and find your people . Whether it's an ADHD parenting group , an online forum , just a good friend , a success coach like me , anyone who gets it . Having support is non-negotiable . You are not meant to do this alone . It also is helpful to connect with professionals who understand ADHD , such as therapists or coaches , and even educators trained
Micro Moments and Sleep
Lauriein neurodiversity can offer guidance and reassurance when you feel stuck or overwhelmed , and schedule those micro moments of recharge .
LaurieI know it's hard to get time in the day , but micro moments really add up . Micro moments really add up . Self-care doesn't have to mean an expensive spa day . It can be as simple as drinking your coffee while it's still hot . Simple as drinking your coffee while it's still hot , taking a five-minute breathing break or listening to your favorite song in the car . Small , consistent moments add up . Try using the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique Identify five things you can see . Identify five things you can see , four things you can touch , three things you can hear , two things you can smell and one thing you can taste . This quick exercise helps calm your nervous system in high stress moments . It's also something I teach in my coaching sessions as well , but great for anyone .
LaurieAnd prioritize sleep . Yes , really I mean it . I mean it . This is tough and I know it is tough , especially if your child struggles with sleep . But if you can create a wind-down routine for yourself , even 30 extra minutes of rest can make a huge difference in your patience and resilience . Do some simple sleep hacks , which include dimming lights an hour before bed , avoiding screens 30 minutes before sleep , greens 30 minutes before sleep , using calming scents like lavender or chamomile or even chamomile tea , practicing deep breathing or meditation , tapping , working on your vagus nerve All of these strategies I can happily talk
Exercise and Professional Help
Lauriemore about if you would like , but practice those before bed and they will help calm you if needed .
LaurieFor that extra sleep , move your body . Exercise doesn't have to mean hitting the gym for an hour . Dance in your kitchen , take a walk , Do some stretching , anything to release some of that built-up stress . If motivation is a struggle , consider habit stacking . Pair a movement with an existing routine . For example , stretch while waiting for your coffee to brew , or do a quick yoga flow before checking emails .
LaurieAnd , if necessary , seek professional help when needed . If you're feeling completely drained , anxious or burnt out , talk to someone a coach , a therapist , support group . You deserve the same level of care and attention you give your child . Seeking help isn't a sign of weakness . It's a sign of strength . Therapy , adhd coaching or even just a monthly check-in with a counselor can provide the tools you need to maintain emotional balance . Also , a warm bath , a nice glass of wine if you drink it , but something to just give you a little bit of reinforcement , of time alone , of positive feedback . All of this is wonderful
Final Thoughts and Challenges
Lauriefeedback . All of this is wonderful , and I really hope you do try this self-care routine during this time of the year .
LaurieOkay , so , in our final thoughts , parenting a child with ADHD is a marathon . It is not a sprint , as you know . Some days will feel impossible , some days will feel amazing . The goal isn't to be perfect . It is to be present and to take care of yourself so you can show up with love , patience and resilience . So your challenge this week choose one self-care strategy and actually do it , whether it's saying no to something , drinking water before your coffee or texting a friend for support .
LauriePick one thing , please , and commit to it . And let us know it Hashtag NeuroquirkyNexus . Let us know yeah , let us know it . Hashtag NeuroquirkyNexus . What the one thing is that you chose to commit to , what the one thing is that you chose to commit to . And don't forget that you are not alone in this . You're doing an incredible job and you deserve care too . You really can't help someone unless you help yourself first . Your patience is only as long as well as you care for yourself . Really , you have to care for yourself . So you're doing an incredible job , really you are , and I really want to thank you for spending
