You're told success is about the product. Work harder. Find a gap.

But Dr Natasha Cook built a seven-figure skincare brand from her parents' garage in Maitland and says the real game is something almost nobody talks about.

So I invited her on this week's podcast - a board-certified dermatologist who self-funded her way to a profitable brand, said no to private equity twice, and got ostracised by her own profession for doing it.

Here's what we uncovered:
→ Money isn't the biggest boat. It's the walk-away power. Her bricklayer dad taught her wealth was never about the fanciest house on the street. It's being able to leave the room, the boss, the situation that's crushing you. That's the whole point.

→ The foetal position is your friend. You can't build anything real without it. Natasha's been the "amorphous puddle" wondering if she made every wrong decision. The founders who never felt that pain never developed the invisible tools that actually run a business.

→ You can't rationalise with irrational people. What a customer says or does often has nothing to do with your product, your service, or you. You just became the punching bag for whatever's going on in their life. Stop absorbing it.

→ Healthy, happy, busy people don't leave scathing reviews. It's the loud minority weaponising complaints while regulators never vet the complainant. Meanwhile someone's doing hysterectomies on women who don't need them - and that flies under the radar.

→ Australia is drowning in low-hanging fruit. Walnuts on a desk get escalated to the medical board. Royal commissions burn hundreds of millions investigating things we already know 90% of the answer to. It's virtue signalling that looks busy and changes no outcome.

→ Short-term pain, long-term gain - there's no free lunch. Compound interest is your best investment. Don't buy the handbag. Delayed gratification built everything worth having, and this generation's been sold "just add water" success that doesn't exist.

→ Back yourself before you're ready. Getting her own name on a skincare label felt like "dragging an elephant around a football field." She was scared of the backlash. She did it anyway - because if you don't believe in what you make, why should anyone else?
