In the eighty-eighth shloka of Soundaryalahari, Adi Shankara questions how supremely delicate feet of Devi could ever be compared to the hard shell of a tortoise. He recalls the sacred moment during the wedding of Shiva and Shakti, when Shiva, with infinite love and reverence, gently lifted Devi’s foot with both hands and placed it upon the ritual stone.
