Returning guest Jason Althide is back on the pod. Maybe the most random, funny, with hunting mixed in episode we have had!
Well, welcome back, everybody. It's the Whitetail Realm. Got Mason here, and uh we got another returning guest, uh, my good friend Jason Altide. Mason, good to be here. Yeah. Even though I'm not here, I guess. Yeah, yeah. We're we're not uh sitting in a tool shed 120 degrees like we were last time doing this.
SPEAKER_02At the hell farm with gay dog.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But uh we're calling Jason just to get some updates. We're phone on a couple guests cancel on us this week.
SPEAKER_02What'd you say? You put your phone on airplane mode again, it cut out again. Did it cut out again? I didn't.
SPEAKER_00Can you hear me now? Yep. Yep, yep. See it's still recording, so we're good. Um we are uh doing a phone call. We got some technical difficulties with his Western Illinois cellular service, it sounds like now. T-Mobile. T-Mobile.
SPEAKER_02And I'm I'm even on my internet at home, so please don't sponsor us, T-Mobile. Yeah, you guys can go to hell.
SPEAKER_00Well, let's get into it. Uh, we didn't do an episode over your buck from last year, so why don't you kind of tell us a story about that? And uh, I guess we'll start from there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Uh last year kind of kind of an unusual season for me. You know, didn't didn't really see much early season. Um, so I shot my buck November 9th, and uh, you know, just very little sign of bucks running, you know, hardly any does. I killed a I think I killed a doe week before or two weeks before, and then uh ended up shooting my buck. It was early, early morning, November 9th on the Sunday, and uh I had a little buck come under my tree stand. He had a like a spike, he had a three-point horn, and then he had a spike coming out the front of his head. I'm like, oh, he'll be a cool one in a couple years. And I look over and I see one side of this buck's antlers just staring at me. I mean, the wind was going right towards him. I'm like, shit. So I uh kind of get myself positioned on the one side he couldn't see me. And uh I'm like, you know, this is this is a pretty nice buck. It was I'm gonna bet 15 minutes after shooting light. He uh decided to kind of turn, turn his head away from me. So I drew back on him. He stepped out, uh, you know, could see him from 30 yards away, still kind of dark. Shot him, my great shot. Called you basically immediately after. Sound like you were in bed. I was still in bed. I didn't remember.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I woke up, uh, you know, I fell back asleep after he called me, and then I woke up like, did Jason call me? I couldn't remember. I'm like, I remember that, but I didn't know if it was real or not. It was early. Like I'm you weren't much after sunrise or legal shooting light.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I can't remember what I want to say it was like 6 30 or sometime like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I knew it was early, and he's on Central Time over there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And uh so I I smoked him, knew it was a great shot, saw him run off, ran on the neighbor's property, called him, he says it's fine, and uh went down, found him, and boy, the ground shrinkage was massive. Yeah I I told him like I kind of embarrassed I shot this one, really. So uh I actually had to go to church that that morning with my now ex-girlfriend, but sorry, I was uh possibly here say in my company truck when I shot him, so I drove back home, got my real truck, and and uh drove out there, gutted him. And uh like well, I was wanting to show her and her family, so I basically drove to church with a deer's head in the back.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you want to see something? That sounds like the most high school thing, like I was taking it back to school with you.
SPEAKER_02But oh, I had a a kid I know he he likes to year-mount or bleach buck skulls, and he turned out to be a sweet buck. His uh his right side antlers, like the very end of it, go right towards the center of his head. Yep, and the left side sticks out farther. He's got a bunch of junk at the bottom, but man, I I wish I would have been a little bit impatient, but it was November 9th, and I'm usually tagged out by the end of October.
SPEAKER_00It happens so quick, too. And hey, yeah, hey, it got you excited to pull back the bow. Who cares? Yeah, once he was a chin pointer, wasn't he? Yes. Yep.
SPEAKER_02You had a look at him, didn't you? He he very well possibly be an 11. He's got like a yeah, I'd call it a lizard foot face. Gotcha. It's massive, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yep. No, that's that's awesome. I remember, like I said, I didn't remember he calling me at first, but once I woke up and drank a pot of coffee, I I remembered it afterwards.
SPEAKER_02I you know, after seeing him all all year-mounted and everything, I'm like, he's not a bad buck. I I'm not that disappointed, but you know.
SPEAKER_00Well, and with your circumstances last year at November 9th, with you know, losing 99% of the ground you normally hunt, I I wouldn't be I'd still be excited.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's that's the other thing though that was really beneficial. I you know, was able to keep all the ground I had now. I thought I was going to lose, which I'm grateful for. I just you know have to return the favor. I detail tractors now, so I'm like, as long as you let me hunt, I will keep all your tractors clean.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, well, yeah, well, we might as well plug that since they're already doing that too. What I saw you got a Facebook page now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's uh field day detailing and you know, I'll travel, but I don't know if I want to drive to Indiana to detail a tractor.
SPEAKER_00We got a lot of Illinois listeners. That's true. We'll get you we'll get you a couple lined up so you get it worth the trip.
SPEAKER_02That's that's the problem now, is you know, a lot of all the people I know they're like, oh, you want to do mine? So now I'm backed up with stuff I gotta do. And I'm like, I kind of need to have some time to go shoot my bow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's what I was just doing before he called. It's freaking humid out, and I'm sweating my ass off doing it, but uh definitely far behind of what I normally am at this point. I'm shooting fine. I told Lane the other day on the phone, like I I feel like I'm an average, I'm above average bow hunter, you know, level with efficiency of their bow right now, but not to where I normally am at this point.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I I feel like I've I get a lot better as I get older, I get calmer. Yeah. But uh, yeah. But when it comes down to it and you got a you know, nice deer in front of you, are you really that good of a bow hunter?
SPEAKER_00Exactly. It it so when shit hits fan, it's it doesn't matter if you shot a thousand arrows or five, you know what I mean? I know the last two years I was shooting 50 to 100 arrows a night, and now I shoot 10 to 20. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02There's there's some years I've I'll shoot. Hell, I think uh the big buck that you posted of mine shot two, three years ago, whenever that was. Like, I think I shot 10 arrows before season. Well, Jesus. I went down to Cody's ranch and like called one of the Michigan hunters like, hey, can I use your target? Yeah, shot it. That's bad. That's even worse. You didn't even have a target. I didn't want to dig my big one out of the storage container. He likes to stick all his skid steer attachments in front of it and supported. I got a day of fourth season. I'm gonna I'm gonna wait. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But it's better. I got a a buddy that lives over by you. He uh I think two years ago, he he shot bucks back to back years, and uh the only arrow he shot after the buck he killed the first year was the buck he shot the second year, so you're doing better than he is.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, sometimes you get lucky. Yeah. With the way I hunt, I'm it's all it's basically all luck. All ag fields and about maybe 200 trees.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Maybe. Yep. But you did a lot of you know, you you put a lot of work in this summer on what you do have. Why don't you go into that? I know you spent a lot of time in the skids here getting some stuff ready.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so uh the place where I actually shot my biggest buck, actually several of my big bucks, uh there was a really old dried up pond. I the only water I've ever seen is about three inches deep. So I'm like, you know what? The neighbor's got water on his property. I'm gonna see if you know, I can't make something happen here. So I dug that pond out, and then I don't know, two, three days later, we had a four-inch rain. We had another four-inch rain, so it was full. Yeah. And uh, you know, I see a lot of deer. I had a camera on there, wasn't really getting many pictures, but you know, I go down there, there's deer trails that go through it now, and deer prints everywhere. Turkeys love it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's it'll be exciting to see what happens. Um, I I planted an extra food plot on that same piece. It kind of runs down by this, if you want to call it a crick, it's basically a ditch, but yeah, it it greened up right away. I've had a lot of deer, a lot of turkeys on it. One possible shooter buck, but I've only had one picture of him.
SPEAKER_00He's uh did you uh plant that with a drone again this year?
SPEAKER_02No, so well, the way our fields were, I I feel more comfortable you know, dropping over the over corn than I do beans, because you know, you know, we get a good rain, it pops up, then you know, got a raise of a header on there, so yeah, cut them all off. And yeah, like I'm just I'm just gonna keep trying to try try different things to see what works. And yeah, I'm usually too stupid to think about what the right thing is, but yeah. But no, uh just did some hand spreading. Yep. Um probably next year I'll might try the drone thing again, see if that works. Last year it worked on one piece, and I I hardly see any seen any deer. I'm like, everything I everything I'm I'm supposed to be doing, I'm doing. It seems like it's having the opposite effect.
SPEAKER_00It's I don't know. We got a pile, we got a pile of coyotes this year, too. It's as every night I have pictures of coyotes. It's freaking crazy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I you know, with the the bean, all the cross bean, I haven't seen near as many, but this the the spot where um where I where it actually took off over the drone planting, uh, you know, that spot there's always I don't know, two coyotes every hunt. Yeah. I shot right under one last year, but uh yeah, they're they're everywhere around here. I actually had a bobcat on camera the other day.
SPEAKER_00I just had one last night. We have quite a few, I shouldn't say quite a few bobcats. I've had more pictures this year than I usually get one or two pictures, but I'm already at probably five for the year, so yeah. And I just like people heard on the last couple podcasts, just really put all my cameras out last week. So for having I think five out or five pictures for as little as cameras I had, I thought that was quite a bit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I've got five cameras out and I put them in late July. Yep. And you know, I've got, like I said, a few good bucks. Nothing over 140s, but one I'm kind of excited about and one I haven't seen yet, but I found the shed antlers I'm guessing a huge A point because the widest part of his antlers is wide as my palm. Like, yeah. I I sent you a picture of my it doesn't do it justice. Yep. Uh he's in a a bedding area, or was in a bedding area, that has three trees, a tree stand that's gonna be useless in the fall because there is there's not gonna be any cover. So it might have to be like a oh what's what's that guy's name? Caleb uh griner. Grinder, yeah. Probably have to have to be one of those situations, you know, hunting fence line and he just shot a stud yesterday.
SPEAKER_00Where's where's he getting that? Uh I think North or South Dakota is one of those are covers.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00It's a stud.
SPEAKER_02So um I know uh Missouri's season opened up. Got a few Snapchats from some guys over there.
SPEAKER_00But is it open on the 15th or open on the 15th? I I don't I would say so. Yeah, yes. Gotcha. Oh, that's that's good. You also got a new toy the last month as well. I did.
SPEAKER_02I uh all this tractor detail money, you know, in my pocket. Yeah, so I went into F6 with my five-year-old bow, and you know, it's it was creaking strings, that bow was never built right. And I was gonna have it restrung, and I saw you know, Hoyt's American flag pattern, and I'm like, you know, that looks really good. It's not tacky. And uh Jamie over there, he goes, So what you you here to pick up a bow? I'm like, no, I'm trying to get a bow restrung, but I I think I might just buy that one. He goes, Oh, alright. And uh they got me all set up. The the thing is more than I could ask for. I I don't I couldn't see myself buying another bow. How how good this thing shoots.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're like Lane and I talk all the time, all the bow like him and I shoot the new bows every year, but man, they're all it doesn't matter what brand you shoot anymore, they're all good. But I was watching I was watching uh T-Bone on the Bone Collector today. He was building one of those you know, America Flag 250 anniversary hoit board bows, and man, they just look it looks sweet.
SPEAKER_02It's it's awesome. I showed to my parents who uh they don't hunt, but yep, they're interested in stuff I'm interested in. Like, oh, this is really nice. Wow. But no, I got the uh oh the Carbon RX 10. Yeah it's a short shorter axis bow, which you know I'm six foot two with a my draw link's supposed to be 31, but yeah, it's this bow only went to 30 inches, but my old bow was at 30 inches. I've kind of gotten used to shooting that way. Yeah, I it's not gonna bother me at all. And uh they uh you know got stabilizer kickstand, black gold pre-pin adjustable, which I had got that on my old bow. Love it. And uh I'll just bought a painted arrow phone holder, which I'm pretty excited about.
SPEAKER_00It goes on your uh stabilizer, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. And then uh they got it like I think he made two adjustments on it, and I you know, just testing out, shooting out to 100 yards, and the bow is dead on. I'm not I didn't hit the bullseye, but it will go exactly where that pin's at. I'm like, this is insane. That's awesome. We put it on the uh speed machine, that's what I'm gonna call it because I can't think of the scientific term, but it's shooting 306 feet per second, and cooking thing is cooking and it's quiet.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that looks sweet. Uh, I'll tell you there's one thing I know on some bows they can. I don't know how Hoit's set up wait till offseason, try it to get your longer draw like you can get like a uh a higher, I think it's a higher let off, or you can mess with the let off and it gets you like a half inch extra on your draw. Yeah. I know I know you can on some bows. I don't know if you can on Hoit, but that's definitely something you can mess with to try to get you a little longer too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, if I was uh smart like you with bows, I'd I'd I'd I'd know a little more, but yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, I just I you told me that before and I forgot about that, but when you just said it again, I'm like, oh, I forgot. I've seen uh guys do that before like I know Levi Morgan has to do that because he's like seven foot tall trying to shoot a bow.
SPEAKER_02So that's something you can do. Yeah, no, they uh they had to put new mods on it to get the right draw length. I think that's yes, that's what it was new mods, and uh that's all I get to get it for was 30 inches. But I'm happy with it. I'm I'm used to shooting 30 inches and yeah, dude, it's it's sweet. I've shot about oh 138 arrows through it. They want to 138. You've been counting that that exact yeah, I gotta I gotta count her on my phone because they they want me to shoot 300 arrows through it, bring it back in, yeah, check it out. Yeah, problem is it's finding time, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But that is always the problem. That's why I talk about it a lot on here. I shoot at night more anymore, just not enough time to shoot during the day, you run out of daylight to do do that.
SPEAKER_02Say that that was my part of my plan today was go do that, but I had to go up to northern Iowa, about three and a half hours north, and uh go grab a tire grab and come back. I did I just got home at eight o'clock, so yeah, yeah. And I live in town, so I can't push shoot at night.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, go shoot at just go shoot at the office. No one's gonna care. I've done it before. Not at night, but I've done it before. Um that's awesome. How were uh I was up at I was in northern Iowa last weekend, and they seemed a little further behind than we were crop wise.
SPEAKER_02Oh, they were I'd I'd say their beans are, but yeah, their uh corn crop, a lot of it looked like it just you know sudden death, died from the top down, which we've had quite a bit of that around here. Yeah, like there's several guys like yeah, we got it on the corn and it was 16.8 percent. We're like we were expecting like 20.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So it might be one of those things where guys, you know, they see that number like we gotta get to getting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's a lot of guys around 17 here, and I mean everyone's going in my area, but uh like I was just telling my last week on podcast, the one I did with Trey, I was telling them how you know, usually when our farm is in beans, we'll have it's usually the last many plants. We usually have green until you know that first week of the season. But hell, one of the fields in the last five days has lost all its leaves already. It went from green to dead.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's so I'd say on our I'd say on our beans, we're about four weeks out to cut, and then corn. I think we got a field that would go right now, but uh dad, he's wanting to do some stuff to the combine, like drain the antifreeze or redo the anti-freeze on that. And I'm like, okay, I guess you can do that. Yeah, do the antifreeze in September, so it's fine.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02We're always late to getting in the field no matter if it's spring or fall, but I'm the part that worries me is you know, getting crops out early. You know, like I talked about last year, like the past three well, four big bucks I've killed have been over a field beans that we cut that next day or the the very morning. So you know, it's it'll be right that early October is when we start cutting beans.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's funny. I know my cameras have been on the bean. The cameras I've had out for a while are around the bean fields and everything, and then this week they've really gone dead. So the bucks have definitely moved off in my area onto the acorns, which that's where I put a lot of cameras last week. So they're definitely shifting and moving around. I haven't seen many out when I'm out driving in glass, and so definitely moving for sure.
SPEAKER_02How's your what's your acorns looking like out there?
SPEAKER_00Um I've just been out there one time, and there's some there not as good as last year, but it's okay. I know my yard, there's a two uh burr oaks, and there's does in it every I think I sent you a picture of it tonight. There are video there's does in it every night, 10, 12 of them. So I assume I I haven't looked at a burr oak out in the woods, but I'm I'm sure those trees are good. Just these, I mean, you you roll your ankle walking my farm right now, so I'm sure they're out there. Um the white oaks aren't wider red oaks. I don't know what what are dropping, they didn't seem to be as good as they were last year.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I went out to the uh the main farmer hunt. I put a hemp rope out there just to you know, you've been bragging about them. So but I was looking at the acorns on the ground and it's basically just the the top of it. There's there's hardly any fruit in there. Yeah, there's a few that you know fully developed, but the crop out there is not looking great, but yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm not sure. I that's I haven't seen many deer around. Our acorns aren't great. I'm probably missing something somewhere where they're at, but I don't know where they're at right now, which is fine. It's September 15th, 16th, whatever it is. So yeah, I'm not too worried at At this point, I know I don't know if we have any persimmon trees. I'm sure we have a couple in that big woods, but uh I know today a guy on Facebook today was posting a bunch of persimmons, so that must be a good year for them.
SPEAKER_02I don't think we have any on any of our properties.
SPEAKER_00I I'm sure we do just with as many freaking trees are down there. But uh I could you could if you ask me to point one out. I know what one looks like, but I couldn't don't know where one's at out there. See, we're not we're not arborists. Yeah, hey, I was I was uh runner-up state champ in FFA forestry.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but you gotta remember FFA judges basically all guessing. You just went there for the women.
SPEAKER_00It was uh it was like I it was like a high school test. You just memorized it the night before. Oh I'm good at I'm good at leaves. Once they lose their leaves, I have no fucking idea what they are. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I can barely tell you what any of the plants are, but I know I got into some poison ivy because I got it all over me and I went you don't want it.
SPEAKER_00I went and filled batteries on a camera tonight, and I got oh I I've never had poison ivy. Like I don't get it. My dad didn't get it when he was my age. I think it was it must have been like stinging nettles or something. My arm is covered in something right now. Oh yeah. I got it in between the webs of my fingers, my arms groin. I literally just I drove right up to the camera on the side by side and put the batteries in it. Like I I took two steps of the wood and I got covered in something. It's I hate it. It's the worst. It is the worst. Be taking a Benadryl bath and Benadryl cocktail tonight. Yeah. No, but I think they need to make Benadryl like a good something that mixes well with it. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Don't know. It's like a little uh Alkacels or tablet just dropping out. Well, but uh one thing I do want to say about that farm, which could be good, is uh talking about the farm with the pond. It's in its first year of beans in I'm gonna say four years. So it's going back to dad's gonna try to put it back to hay, but you know, I that's when I have good luck, is when that field's in beans. So you talk about doing an alfalfa. Don't tell him why you want it an alfalfa, but well, he wants it in clover and it basically turned into fox foxtail.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think that I think that's normally how it is. The first year you have good, and then after that it's all foxtail. Yeah. That's what uh most of the heat fields turn into around here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and then he's putting it to wheat and then going in trying to broadcast clover clover. I'm like, I okay, guess what we're doing it again, see if it'd take off.
SPEAKER_00So he'll do uh wheat this fall, and then will we do clover like right after the wheat, or will he wait till the fall to do that again?
SPEAKER_02Oh, so we we cut the wheat and bail it, and then he goes in and broadcasts it.
SPEAKER_00But so in July in July he'll broadcast it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, when it won't rain. Yeah, yeah. That's it never works out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh because I think I was I don't pay attention to much hay, like ag hay, but you know, you pay attention to clover, just food plot guys, a lot of them do it in September, that's why I was asking. But obviously, you deal with weeds then if you leave something bare that long in the summer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. No, but we'll we'll see what happens.
SPEAKER_00Could turn in something good, but uh but hey, if you got if you got winter weed out there, you'll have a long time you'll be able to hunt it this year. Have a bunch of food out there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, if it sprouts up a little bit.
SPEAKER_00I'm sure, I'm sure it will. It looks hot for the next couple. You know, the start of October looks warm, so if you get it in pretty early, I think you'll be all right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. But we're always late to getting anything in. Yeah, that's right.
SPEAKER_00That's what you said.
SPEAKER_02Anything in or anything out.
SPEAKER_00I know that I remember last year, like my brother-in-law and buddies were wrapping up farming that week, and you sent me and goes out about time to start.
SPEAKER_02It's every year, that's just that's how the old ties run.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, it probably works out for your schedule too, because we're plenty busy in October doing retirements for our jobs, so yeah. You know, November is about the right time for you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's that's part of the plan, is uh this year I'm probably gonna take maybe a week or two off just hunt. Yeah. I I'm not making any western trips this year. Yeah. Other than next Friday I'm gonna my niece's birthday party. So see if I can't go shoot some prairie dogs or something. In Nebraska. He actually moved to a really good deer county in Wyoming. In Colorado, right? Wyoming.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Wyoming. I knew he was Nebraska, right though.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. PSAs do not go to hunt near Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Yeah. I saw three bucks and they were all in town.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I hunted public and then I got some permission on some private, and it was all the all does.
SPEAKER_00Well, I told Lane, there's not a whole lot that's got me too excited on my place this year. There's there's an old buck that probably needs to go. I've had he was a 130-inch 10-pointer three years ago, big, stout, tight rack. Um, but he hasn't grown much in the last three years. He's just a big stout, he's maybe 145 now. He's grown 15 inches in three years. Maybe he's bigger than that because he is a giant-bodied deer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's really the only one I'm too, you know, excited to get after. So I'm actually this weekend, I'm gonna go look at some public in Illinois. You know, when I got back into bow hunting, it was because of the hunting public, and I've never done anything like that. So I kind of want to you know try something out. I've I've tried it a couple of times, Lane and I've done it turkey hunting, but uh we're gonna go look at some spots in Illinois. There's one, there's actually two I'm gonna look at not too far from you, so I have to call you and help me drag them out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'll be there in seven hours.
SPEAKER_00No, they're they're the one's probably an hour from you, and the one's probably 45 minutes north.
SPEAKER_02Well, the one an hour from you I there's there's I got a buddy who uh he had pictures of two just you know bucks of a lifetime. Yeah. And uh you know, he was he hunted them for two or three years. And then his brother ended up shooting one during bow season, and then uh also during gun season, and it was on public. Like Illinois has some really good public ground. Yeah, surprisingly. Which uh I that actually uh Illinois does not have very good public ground.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, say that out loud again. Say it twice. Don't worry, anybody that goes to hunting. I'm glad so far you haven't said where. So I'm glad you're doing well there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I stuck my foot in my mouth again.
SPEAKER_00No, you're good. I'll I'll tell you off there where I think I'm going. But I I didn't I I was looking doing a lot of research this week on it. Um there's like almost half a million acres of public land in Illinois. Yeah. I didn't know that. There's a spot in a bunch of it's down south, but there's good chunks in central Illinois.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's there's there's a spot next to me.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Basically where I went to school, and uh I hunted on some private next to it. Shot a really good buck, never found him. We kind of we kind of scared him off looking for him, but yeah. Um there have been several 200-inch bugs killed right around that area.
SPEAKER_00And really, are are you what county what county do you live in? Yeah, wouldn't you like no weather boy? No, I just you were you part of the golden triangle, or is that are you just north? That's why I was asking.
SPEAKER_02Um it kind of feels like we're in now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I agree. You are now. I mean, I see what our co-workers shoot, so you guys are definitely in the area, but I didn't know if that was I didn't know if it's part of the original. Obviously, everyone knows Pike County, but I didn't know if yours was part of the original three or not. If you're not, if you're not, you guys touch up against one. So even if you know everyone talks about Pike County's dead, but they're still in all their that area just grows big deer in general.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I mean, it's there there's some spots that are pretty close to where I grew up that would rival Pike County. Like just I about hit I it was definitely, I think it was what was it, 185 inch mainframe eight point. I was driving home one night, saw him in the ditch, uh, and actually thought about destroying my truck to kill his deer. Yeah, he was that big. And my buddy ended up finding him dead and he had him scored. It was like, I think it was 185 and like yeah, uh there's mine over which I know I hunt I bet 10 miles from where this buck was, but yep, there's a lot more timber in that area.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And I mean, you guys are so close to the river, there's all I'm sure there's thousands of creeks and ditches that go to the river that they can hide in. You know, it's it's an awesome spot.
SPEAKER_02There's there's been huge bucks killed out on islands on the Mississippi, too. Yeah. Um I got a buddy's father-in-law, he uh invited me to deer camp this year. He's got all kinds of stories of huge deer around the area. He was showing me pictures. I'm like, where uh where's where's this located at? Yeah, you can go to a longitudinal attitude of this place. I I bet I could get a few beers in him and he would tell me. He'd like, so it is uh Brock's father in law, and Brock's like, yeah, he he can play guitar. He's like, You're coming to deer camp, brother. I'm like, all right.
SPEAKER_00You're gonna hunt your ground too. Maybe maybe you and I can do that this year. We'll I'll after I scout some public, we'll get you to come down and we'll do a deer camp on some public ground one week. That'd be that'd be pretty sweet.
SPEAKER_02I'd I'd like to try that. Like I've I've hunted private my whole life for whitetail. And yeah, you know, there's there's really good spots around me, but I've never even really put the thought of going in public, unless it's like way later in the year and I haven't seen anything.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And that's what I even if I hunt my place, I just want to even if I I don't even care if I go shoot something, just try something, you know, run around with 40 other guys out on a piece just trying to find and they always I think it'd just be a good experience to be a better all-around deer hunter.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's uh don't run any cameras, just go off sign and you know, the land.
SPEAKER_02Oh, there's something I want to debate on you with is what's you know, when you were younger, did you run cameras when you were younger?
SPEAKER_00I didn't run cameras until we had I meant we had one camera growing up and until I got home from college four years ago. I didn't run another one.
SPEAKER_02Man, do you remember that that feeling going out hunting and not knowing what was out there? Oh yeah. I I've been talking with guys around here, like man, it's fun to like check your apps, see what's out there, but then you're like, well, I know it's out there, and then you put all your attention towards this year or that year. And it's it's worked out for me a few times, too. I'd say twice now, but man, I I'm starting to miss the nostalgia of I don't know what can come out here. Yeah, sweet. See what happens.
SPEAKER_00So that's what uh I I remember one of my favorite stories growing up. I don't know how old I was. I couldn't drive. My dad was still hunting with me. There was it was open week and gun season. Everyone's up. We used to have 20, 30 people for deer camp every year. It was a cool time, you know, five, ten campers sitting at the place, fires, you know, beer all all around. Like you and I would have loved it if we were that age. But I was young, and I still remember everyone was talking about this chocolate tin they've all seen. It was, you know, during the rut. And it was just never seen the deer, but you just, you know, heard the story and the lore of this deer. And I just remember going out. I'm like, I'm gonna shoot this chocolate tin. Never seen a picture of them, never seen them before, but like had an image in my head of what this deer was and everything. And it I just missed you're right. I I missed that too. So that's something that'd be cool to just go to a piece of property and have no expectations, just sit with your bow in the hand and be ready.
SPEAKER_02Like, that's that's kind of the story of my first buck with a bow. I was 14 years old. I was in eighth grade. Yeah, so it'd been my third year hunting, and uh, I actually I wanted to video my hunts, so I had this little digital camera and I was taking pictures of squirrels. I'm in this buddy stand, I'm gonna guess 12 feet up, no cover, nothing and I hear something behind me. We heard stories of this drop tyne buck. My cousin told me about it. He goes, it's a huge buck with a drop tyne.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02And uh I turn around, I heard a noise, turn around, huge buck. I'm like, no way. He doesn't really care that I'm there. And I was able to get a shot on him, hit him in the spine, put four more arrows in him because I was freaking out. And uh he actually I think was the drop time buck, but he broke the drop tie off. Oh yeah, and he scored 142, but like the neighbor right next to it's like, oh, the kid shot my buck, how's my butt? Like, I'm just glad to be here. Yeah, and uh, you know, a lot of people would have said, you know, that's a that's a buck that'd make you quit hunting. So yeah, like oh, I know there's bigger deer out there.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. I know like in my county last year, there was a 200 kill. I don't remember, I'm sure there's been another one, but I don't ever remember 200, and then it's just crazy. You never and the guy that killed him, I don't know him. He got famous on Facebook, obviously, because of the photo, but it looked like he's never killed another buck over 120 inches, so it it it's just it's always crazy and good for that dude. I'm pumped for that guy. I don't know the deer, don't know the guy, but that anybody shoes 200 hats off to that guy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh, years ago, there was a 13-year-old kid hunting with us, and we, you know, we used to do deer drives, and I don't do them anymore. They just feel dirty to me, but and you do them in Illinois anymore? Uh yeah. According to uh oh, the DNR officer, he's pretty cool around here, but he's told stories of checking guys while they were dealing deer driving and handing guns back to him so they can shoot a deer. But this kid, he uh he misses this dough several times. That was I'm gonna guess 40 yards away from, and then all of a sudden I can see this huge buck. I bet a hundred yards away from him. He smokes it. My buddy had had that buck on camera, he was pretty disappointed. But kid shot it. They invited me out the next season. He goes, I'd have killed a buck. I don't I don't want to go anymore. Yeah, like but I think that kid still hunts, so I'm glad that he maybe got that drive back in. But yeah, that's you know, see people kill a big buck right away. It's you're like, well, they're never gonna want to hunt again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like I don't I I don't think I killed a a buck until my freshman year high school, maybe eighth grade year. Like I I'd been hunting a while. And when when did you start? I know I killed my first deer in fifth grade, but I think I I think my hunter safety license says I was seven when I passed the test. I my dad took me turkey hunting all the time. Yeah, but I I think I killed my first doe in fifth grade. So whatever that is, 12, 13 years old, probably.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then probably killed I I bet you that's 12 and probably killed my first buck. I I couldn't drive, I know that. So probably 15, 14, 15 when I killed my first buck.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So that I started hunting in sixth grade, so I would have been 12. And uh I didn't kill. I guess I killed a buck when I was 13. Yeah. A little five-pointer.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00I know uh I know I was just doing the math. I think next year's year 20 of me turkey hunting. I was Indiana, it shows you every license you ever bought, and I've added them up before. I think it's year 20 of turkey outing.
SPEAKER_02Did they uh did they have steel tags for the turkeys then too? No, no, no.
SPEAKER_00Uh they might, you know, I don't know. I I was I didn't kill a turkey until I was old, too. I I bet you I hunted for eight years until I killed a turkey. I bet you I wounded 10 of them, but yeah. I would I wounded a butt, my dad would have to tell you, I wounded a bunch of turkeys. I couldn't shoot one to save my life.
SPEAKER_02And I I still have never killed one. I've uh this is the first year in five years I went. I went one day and like I got things to do. It's for some reason turkeys just don't excite me.
SPEAKER_00I I've kind of now that I so I once I turned 16, I started bow hunting. And uh God, I sucked at it. I had no idea what I was doing. There wasn't like you there's YouTube, but no one watched YouTube and learned like you could now. So I was still turkey hunting is my favorite thing to do. But once, you know, I've told the story on here a hundred times, but once I moved back home from college, you know, started watching YouTube, and just once bow hunting is consumed, what I do, it's just it's way more fun than going to the turkey woods. I used to want to shoot a turkey in all 49 states, but I'd rather save my time than do 40 sets a year in the Deer Woods.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, I I don't know how many times I sat last year, but that was pretty close to your 57th. Yeah, 57.
SPEAKER_00I counted last year. I happened to it. It was like I was getting to the point. Like I said the last last week, you know, it's harder to get up in the morning when it was cold out. And I I hunted, I need to look. I talked about it. There's wet weather undergrounds and app you can go back and look at like uh historical weather. I would like to know the the difference in the degrees of hunted. Because I know like I I hunt pretty hard the first week of August. We have a lot of deer you can get on. So I bet you there's a 90-degree day in there. I know I hunted it in a zero degrees blizzard. I just want to know how the difference in weather. I need to look at that. That'd be pretty cool.
SPEAKER_02Uh I I think I hunted. We had sort of a blizzard last year I hunted in. Yep. And it was it was beautiful, but man, my fingers cold, but I'll tell you what, get get you some Mickey Mouse military boots. Them things are good in sub-degree weather. It's they're they're heavier and shit, but that's what I wear out in the winter.
SPEAKER_00Dude, I got these Timu snowboarding boots. Yeah. They are awesome. Lane makes fun of me. He makes so much fun of me because they are the gayest looking things you've ever seen, but they are they are so freaking warm. I'm dumb though. I don't I can't shoot my bow with gloves on. Like I don't practice enough, so I don't wear gloves. So my hands get really freaking cold out there. I'm gonna get one of those, like uh, I think they call them muffs, you know, the thing you put around your waist. Oh, yeah, yeah. I'm gonna get one of those, and I got actually got an electric hand warmer uh this year for Black Friday, so I'm gonna use that.
SPEAKER_02So I've got those uh mittens that flip open, so then your fingers are exposed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But the problem is, you know, I get kind of bored in the tree stand sometimes. Doesn't help with ADHD, but yeah, I'll just be sitting there just kind of flapping them.
SPEAKER_00I do that. I do that with my release. I sit there and click it the whole time. About a million times is it. I saw a guy today, he uh he made a I think it was a joke, but uh he started hunting with a traditional bow and he was shooting with finger taps, so he was just making the clicking noise. He goes, I don't know what to do. He says, I don't have a release, so I've just been making a clicking noise in the tree.
SPEAKER_02Oh man. Uh something I thought about getting is uh you know, I plan on doing a little bit of ground hunting this year. Yeah, getting uh moccasins because you'd hear you know stories about uh Indians during World War II wearing moccasins and they they'd go do uh night missions and go kill Nazis or something, and they'd always wear moccasins.
SPEAKER_00I'm like I've never heard that story in my life. I'm gonna have to look that up. That sounds like the most bullshit bar story I've ever heard. Maybe I dreamt that. You know, I was a history nut in high school. I thought there's a point of me I wanted to be a history teacher, and I've never heard that. It's like the Holocaust is bad, you gotta look into the Bolsheviks. Oh my god. This would be a rated R podcast. I'm gonna have to put a freaking uh, you know, if you watch Pat McAfee, I know you don't like sports, but his show has a big warning that says please don't easy.
SPEAKER_02College football's the best.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, have you seen his start to a show though? Goes warning. We are adults, we speak like them. This is how adults talk in the real world. I'm gonna have to put that warning on our freaking show.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, whenever I go down the ranch. Cody's always got Pac Pat McAfee on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's my favorite. I listen to him every day. I actually I've stopped. Once I get it sounds dumb. Once I get to college football, which is my favorite time of year, I stop because it's too close to deer season. I'm listening to Deer Podcast. Yeah. I listen I listen to him in the summer when there's no sports on.
SPEAKER_02Hey, how about Texas taking out uh Ohio? Hook him.
SPEAKER_00Hook him, man. I was I I was watching the first half. I was up at a pig show in Minnesota and I watched the first half, getting her ass beat. So I just stopped watching. And one of my best friends from high school, Dalton, texted me probably real late at night, probably 11 o'clock up there. I don't even know what time it was. He goes, Here's your chance. I go, What the hell is he talking about? And I look at the game and I'm like, holy shit. And I was about I was driving to the hotel. I see this random bar in the way. I'll pull into there, watch the end of the game on there. It was awesome. I was I was pumped.
SPEAKER_02See, I I had to miss it because I was at the rodeo and they had the Iowa Iowa State game on, which cares about that. Yeah. Iowa people, but say I'm I'm a Michigan fan, and them versus West Michigan.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that was bullshit. But but then you guys then you guys beat Oklahoma, which I'm since I'm a Texas fan, fuck Oklahoma. So I was pumped.
SPEAKER_02But man, me and my buddy, it was his birthday. We went out to his uh cabin we're watching it, and there's Michigan should not have been playing that way against West Michigan. Yeah, but man, that last play. I started screaming and I forgot his uh nephew was asleep in the next room. Like, sorry. I forgot you were a Michigan fan. Yeah, I don't know why, because I don't care for the state, but it's because of the hunters at Cody's, right?
SPEAKER_00Pretty much. Yeah, I thought so.
SPEAKER_02They got me into football, and you know, I'm Lions fan too. I don't screw the NFL.
SPEAKER_00I don't even care care about it, but yeah, I don't uh we had Peyton Manning at the Colts growing up, so I was a giant Colts fan. Then they just freak I have I went to a game last year. That was the first one in a long time, but I college football is about the only thing I watch. College football and UFC are about the only two sports I watch anymore in Cubs. Yeah. Big Cubs. The greatest day of my life is when the Cubs won the World Series. Even if I get married or have a kid, I would still say that.
SPEAKER_02I I like going to the actually going to the games. That's a good time. But man, watching on TV makes me want to blow my brains out.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's what this year I told myself I was gonna watch or listen, I'll listen to a bunch on the radio, all 162 games. I bet you I've done 45, 50, like I've done a bunch, but no, you can't do them all. You you have to be an absolute psycho to do them all. How old are you? Yeah, uh physically 26, mentally about 97.
SPEAKER_02Do you go sit down at the old gas station and turn on your your uh weather radio and listen to gas? Yeah, I listen to a bunch driving. Uh just let's let's do a hunting podcast or something, or Shane Gillis.
SPEAKER_00I I listen to plenty of that, but you know, before this year, how much territory I covered. So I had you know, you get tired of podcaster music, you can't throw something else on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, when you gotta when you're you and you gotta go take care of uh you know everybody I've been training.
SPEAKER_00We gotta go help. But it's good. Hey, I like being at home a lot more now, so I got a lot less Cubs game to listen on the radio though. There you go.
SPEAKER_02Um, but oh dude, we did you did you even kill a deer last year?
SPEAKER_00I didn't. Didn't kill it though? I did not. Thanks for rubbing it in. Good thing you're on the phone, you would have just kicked me in the nuts. Appreciate it. Remember, I I I clipped that one buck. Yeah, well, you told me that the other day. Yeah, I clipped him. He's still he is around. He he grew up this year, he looks good. Um, nope, didn't shoot a doe. Nothing. Five coyotes. That was that was the extent of my deer season. 57 cents for five coyotes. Did you even see a doe? Uh yeah, I see thousands. It's our place is crazy. It is it is nothing like that first week of October when I'm sitting in greenfields, you'll see a hundred does a night. It's freaking crazy. You're you're starting to sound like an outfitter not shooting any does. Well, I need to. I really do. But I was usually the last couple years, I wait until after I shoot my buck. That's what I always do. I like dealing with them in the cold rather than the hot too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But then I never shot a buck this year, so then I'd be sitting, I'm like, I can't shoot a doe yet. What if a buck comes?
SPEAKER_02That's that's kind of how it feels for me a lot of times.
SPEAKER_01And yeah.
SPEAKER_02I never did. I what was it? Uh was Lane talking about you know, shooting a doe. Yeah, he he always does, usually like one of his first two sits out. That's that's kind of like the way I kind of grew up doing it once I started getting really into Bo Hunting. Yeah, it's I shoot a doe, you know, I get that nervous jitters out of me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah and you know, it's always in 90 degree weather, but yeah, we we have a cooler, I gotta get it running. It always takes a minute every year to get it running. So that's not a problem for us, but uh I I need to do that this year, especially since the last three years I've been filling my hunts. It's just another element you gotta mess with, and just I need to get it out of the way.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Do you uh do you ever do any uh self-camera facing talks about you know about the hunt?
SPEAKER_00No, never. I never I never do the outdoor channel pre-roll.
SPEAKER_02So yesterday when I went and put out that rope, I tried doing it, and boy, you just feel like a loser.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I agree. Like we I'll be honest, we need to do it more for our Instagram page, but I just can't do it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I can't do it.
SPEAKER_00I I hate seeing pictures of myself, so I like I've been making some TikTok type videos. I don't know if you've seen them on our Instagram, but I didn't feel like a loser doing those sometimes. I I don't think I've seen you on TikTok. Uh, they're not TikToks, I just make videos, I post them on our Instagram. Wayne did it, Lane did a TikTok. You have to go find it. He did a voiceover. It was like Whitale or uh Midwest White Tail voiceover. I was proud of it, it was pretty cool.
SPEAKER_02I I saw some of his his videos putting plots in. They they were done really nice, I thought.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he did he did it. So he just moved. I don't we need to really talk about it on episode, but he's moved to the farm that his family owns, and it's a cool place. And he's put a lot of work into it. He's got a stud on it, so like that guy's got more permission spots than ever, and he's I don't even know because he's got a camera out on him. He's he's focusing on one farm and one deer solely this year. Usually he's got two or three nice ones to go after, but this one's a stud, not to put any pressure on him.
SPEAKER_02But say uh we get a podcast where we're all together talking about yeah, we we need to like a mid-season get together or something.
SPEAKER_00And definitely him and I go on a lot of pig buying trips, especially in your area. So after the season, we'll definitely hell we'll come do on your front porch. Yeah, you guys can see all the huge deer I've killed. I kind of get better at technology. I've I just got you know, this is like our third phone call one we've ever done. So got that figured out. Now I gotta figure out how to add another person to it. So yeah. Well, our last yours, like I think we talked about the front. I screwed up the intro for it. I know halfway through the one that did a train ailer last week, screwed up that one, but we're figured it out. I'm definitely no nerd. We uh we're getting there.
SPEAKER_02You need to add a little bit of music in the beginning of it.
SPEAKER_00Well, I I just figured out how I can do like you know how Midwest uh not Midwest White Telp, uh working class is like that 10 minutes before where they do their sponsors and everything.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I just figured out how to do that, so I'm getting there. I think this this is episode 20, maybe that we've done, so we're learning. Yeah. Hey, you gotta start somewhere. I know how to do video ones now, too. So are you are we gonna have our faces in it next time? Yeah, next time I'll do one with your face on it. We'll get all the the single cougars and Quincy, Illinois to to be on it. You can be your poster child, Jason. All the single moms, yeah. All the single moms in Fort Madison, Iowa, and on Jason alltide. That happened to be me again at the rodeo. Yeah, but I've I figured it did. I'm like, oh, I don't I'm I'm good. When you tell everyone you're Alan Jackson's grandson, they it makes you a little more attractive.
SPEAKER_02I don't have the hair anymore, though. No, you don't. Oh, that's funny. No, you know, I get all the guys together, you know, Lane and other Lane and Gray and Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, I was just thinking last last night, I want to do uh a bow shoot next summer.
SPEAKER_02That'd be sweet.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Do a couple things we can get together. Just even like lane, I'm gonna talk Lane into going and filming um when I do the Illinois private land or not private public land stuff. So yeah, maybe we'll we'll get a deer camp going. I know like hunting public, they do that every year in Ohio. They do like a big deer drive on public land. So we need to we need to do something, just have a deer camp type vibe.
SPEAKER_02Maybe do something like uh sequel, just have a well out of we're doing that this year.
SPEAKER_00Lane and I got another high school or college buddy coming, so you're more than welcome to come to that. As I just said, we have too many does, so I'd have to get an Indiana license though. They're they're not bad. I think out of state's 200 bucks. Oh. We're not we're not liberal Illinois, so we're fine here. How many uh over the counter tags can you get for dough? I think two. I think that 200 bucks get you two dough tags. And then I know for me it's 30 bucks for another one, so let's just say 60 for you can shoot three in our county. So I I know you get probably two for that 200, I think. I'm I'm don't really know that I need to double check that. But I know you can you and ours is you know, you guys have the gun draw and everything. Ours is just all over the counter. Okay. Yep. So no, you could buy it at the grocery store the morning you're going hunting, not a big deal.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we ought to do some like uh late January. What which what's your season go to the show?
SPEAKER_00That's that first uh ours ends that first week. So I think we're doing that first week in January. So I think we're we're planning on like that week in between Christmas and New Year's.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Say ours ours goes to like seems like middle of January.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I was in Ohio was the end of January. I was watching a video last night. A guy killed one like January 30th.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we we gotta get together and do something like this. We all yeah, no, it's late, I guess.
SPEAKER_00We're doing it this year, so you're more than welcome to come. Yeah, hopefully a lot of you didn't pick up my my burp.
SPEAKER_02I've been I've had about three beers.
SPEAKER_00Even if you don't want to come shoot, you can come drink beer and play your guitar. Like I like I don't want to go shoot a dev. We got plenty of them. It's like I put feed out and it's I I sent Lane a Snapchat one day. I put 150 pounds of feed out. It was gone in 12 hours. Man, you guys you guys are able to put feet out Illinois, you can't do anything. Yeah, today was tonight was the last night I'm gonna do it, but it'll be gone tomorrow. Like I don't even have to worry about going to clean it. Like, I think we had to have it out 10 days, 10 or 11 days before the season.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you you can't do it during the season, okay.
SPEAKER_00Nope, can't do it during season. Just just pre-season, you know, getting photos, stuff like that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but uh Illinois, they can't like you can't put mineral out two season they're they're worried about deer touching noses. I've got trail cameras and picture pictures of deer touching noses without anything.
SPEAKER_00So the working the working class talk about that, how every farm store in Illinois sells uh they sell mineral. Yeah. Can you hear the fire alarms going off? I don't know if you can hear that. In your house? No, like the we have one of the or the sirens like for the volunteer firefighters to wake up.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I didn't know if you were uh a uh quote-unquote quote minority.
SPEAKER_00Nope. Hear the smoke alarm chirp. Yep, nope, we're good there. I may have said you can probably hear the tree frogs and everything. Oh, yeah. I got I see, I told you I'm getting better at being a nerd. I got an AI editor that edits all the background noise, so you shouldn't be able to hear it on the on the finished product. But uh look the listeners, they might they might like the tree frogs. Well um Trey and I did that one in my my wood shed. Uh bow shed, it's oh just tool shed. And window open, watching does the whole night, and you couldn't hear them in that, I didn't think.
