[00:00:00] Ryan Mellon: Hey guys. Welcome to another episode of Digital Nomad Nation, nomad Notes edition. ~I. ~Where I give you guys a little peek of what's going on here, living in Bali. So just about five minutes ago, ~uh, ~some of the hotel staff came into my room and taped up all my windows with black, thick plastic. So there is no sunlight coming in.
[00:00:19] Ryan Mellon: There's no light going out. ~Uh, ~more on that and just a minute. So, ~uh, ~I've been in Sanur the past. ~Uh. ~Two weeks now, almost two weeks now. ~Um, and ~Sanur is a quiet beach town. I had to get out of the jungle and go back to the beach. I love the beach. ~Uh, ~and it's a very quiet beach town here. ~Um, ~there's some nice cafes and restaurants along the beach.
[00:00:40] Ryan Mellon: ~Um, ~it's not too much of a nightlife scene. Pretty chill place. ~Um, ~really been enjoying, ~um, ~walking down by the beach and hanging out. ~Um. By, ~by the pool at some of the day clubs that they have here. And ~uh, ~it's just been a really good time to work and get stuff done. You know, ~you ~as a digital nomad, it's [00:01:00] not all fun and games every day.
[00:01:02] Ryan Mellon: Sometimes you just have to really take the time to, ~uh, ~buckle down and get some work done. And so that's what I've been doing. To be honest, it's been a bit, a little bit of lonely time. Which happens as a digital nomad sometimes. ~Um, ~I haven't made too many connections. ~Uh, ~there's only two coworking spaces here and both of 'em were, ~um, ~very expensive.
[00:01:24] Ryan Mellon: ~Um, ~almost $20 for a day pass. And also I didn't really feel like they had any events. There was not a lot of people working there, so I've been working mainly from. My hotel and from places like Starbucks, and they do have ~a, ~a beautiful, huge mall here, with some cafes and stuff, that's right on the ocean.
[00:01:47] Ryan Mellon: ~I don't know any, I'm not a mall person, but ~the mall is right on the ocean with the most amazing view. ~Um,~ and I was actually there the other day when I got there. I got off my scooter, parked it in the parking garage under the mall, and realized ~I, ~I left [00:02:00] my phone ~at, ~back at the hotel. So I ended up spending many hours there, just working, ~um, ~without my phone and on my laptop.
[00:02:08] Ryan Mellon: And then got some dinner and drinks, watched some baseball on the tv. ~Um, and ~I really enjoyed that time of not having my phone. So I think I might do that a little bit more, ~but as that day wound down, um. ~I noticed a lot of people were collecting at the beach kinda at sunset. So I went down to the beach to see what was going on and they actually had, ~um, ~a ~water show, ~water and laser show.
[00:02:27] Ryan Mellon: ~So ~they ~just. ~Had this big fountain right in front of the beach that blew up maybe 50 by 50 feet wide of just a spray of water. And then they were projecting lasers onto the water. And it was a really cool show with lots of music, and I really enjoyed that. It was definitely one of the coolest things that, ~um, ~I saw here in S I just partnered with some new. Digital nomads that I ~had ~met recently in a coworking space in Ubud, and they're ~actually ~helping me with, ~um, ~getting my how [00:03:00] to become a digital nomad course together. So we've been shooting videos. ~Um, ~they're helping me create worksheets and checklists to help, ~uh, ~build this, ~uh.~
[00:03:09] Ryan Mellon: Course out, ~um, ~with a lot of modules, probably gonna have eight modules to helping people become location independence, covering things like finding remote work and transitioning to freelancing, all the logistics behind, ~uh, ~being a digital nomad like visas and taxes, staying ~a ~safe abroad, ~uh, ~how to build community and all the things you need to know to become a digital nomad.
[00:03:31] Ryan Mellon: So. Been working hard on that. Very excited about that. ~And that's what I've been up to, uh, a lot was, uh, just been working on, um, that and, and. Keeping some, ~getting some good guests on the podcast for you guys as well. ~Um, ~so yeah, uh, looking forward to this weekend. So a little bit more about why they came in and taped up my windows.
[00:03:46] Ryan Mellon: ~Um, ~today is, ~uh, ~Neypi and Neypi is the Hindu New Year. ~And ~so tonight. They will be parading these ugly monster paper mache, ~uh, ~creatures through the street~ in a parade. Um, ~[00:04:00] everyone's gonna be out in the streets watching this, and this is a way to get rid of the evil spirits from the island. It's something that happens every march.
[00:04:08] Ryan Mellon: This is my second time doing it, and some of the rules of Neypi after ~the, uh, ~the big party tonight on Friday night. ~Um. ~Everyone goes home and then it turns into Saturday and all of Saturday through till Sunday morning is called silent day, and you're not allowed to work. You're not allowed to travel, you're not allowed to be in the streets, leave your home, you're not to cook, and there is not.
[00:04:35] Ryan Mellon: Supposed to be any light emitted from your home or, or anything? ~Uh, ~years ago, one of my spent, my first silent day and, and yet here in Bali, I was in Nusa Lembogan, an island. Not far from here. And back then they used to actually cut the power, the electricity to the entire island, ~um, ~including cell service.
[00:04:55] Ryan Mellon: So you had nothing for that whole day. And ~uh, ~I remember it just [00:05:00] being a rainy day. I was staying in a hostel and we ended up just hanging out, playing cards and drinking most of the day and, and then seeing the amazing stars at night because the entire islands. Few islands around here are just completely cut off from any light, ~uh, ~at nighttime.
[00:05:18] Ryan Mellon: And so really looking forward to tonight and looking forward to silent day. And I'll keep you guys updated on the next episode of how that goes. ~Um. ~Also, ~uh, ~on Monday I have a friend flying in from Germany who's coming for three weeks and we have a lot planned. We're gonna ~go see some get off Bali Island and~ go to some of the surrounding islands like Nusa Penida that has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
[00:05:39] Ryan Mellon: So I'm really excited to show her around ~and show her around some of the most. ~Some of the coolest places, ~uh, ~in Bali. ~Um, ~and so maybe a little bit of diving, some snorkeling. So looking forward to that as well. ~So~ I hope you guys have a great week and I'll see you on the next one.
