Welcome to the Hustle with Heels podcast. I'm your host, Cindy Excell, a corporate girl, start hustler, wife, and a mom of two. In 2020, I started my first start hustle as an online fitness coach while working in my corporate job as a private wealth manager. Over the years, I have been leading proof that a corporate career and a side hustle can absolutely coexist in harmony. Today, I'm helping corporate women and early-stage entrepreneurs create wealth beyond their 9-to-5 jobs and build an online business on their terms. On this podcast, I'll share my knowledge, strategies, and stories that will help you start and grow your side hustle. Whether you are ready to diversify your income streams or are looking to build a start-up business that aligns with your goals, I'm here to support you every step of the way. Now, let's get started. Hello, friend, welcome to another episode. And today we are diving into one of the most critical topics for anyone starting out, which is how to identify profitable start-hustle business ideas. Now, whether you are at the very beginning of your start-hustle journey, or maybe you are already testing a few start-hustle ideas, this episode is going to help you refine your direction. And before we jump in, let me just say, I believe anyone with a 9 to 5 job should consider having a start-hustle. Because when you think about it, if you invest in the share market, you wouldn't invest all your money in one stock, right? Because we will be thinking about diversification, how can we minimize risks when we have all our money in the share market. But we never really applied that principle to our earning capacity. In the current economic environment, the term job security doesn't exist. Even if you are the top performer in your company, you can still lose their job overnight because there are so many factors that are not in your control. And for some people, even if you think that you have those so-called job security, but when it comes to how much you get paid, It is also often not in your control. That's why having a side hustle and diversify your income, it is so necessary these days. Because that is something can give you financial security. And if you grow your side hustle to quite a significant scale, it can actually create financial independence, even financial freedom. And most importantly, it gives you a sense of purpose. And that's going to put you in the driver's seat for your own career path. When it comes to profitability, when choosing a side hustle business idea, sometimes I hear people say, I can turn my passion into a business. Passion is great. It is necessary and that's one of the aspects I look for when searching for side hustle ideas. Because doing something that excites you is crucial. Because you don't really want to turn your side hustle into a second job. You want that to be something you are at least enjoying doing. But passion alone is not enough to drive a successful business. Your side hustle business also needs to be profitable. Without profitability, your side hustle will just end up draining your time and energy with no tangible returns. Now, a profitable business needs to solve a problem that people are willing to pay for. In other words, your online business should create a transformation that takes your ideal client from point A to point B. You don't need to reinvent the wheel, but you do need to understand the exact problem your ideal client is facing and how your product and service can provide that solution that can bridge that gap. As an online coach, you will be creating a clear path that makes your ideal clients lives easier, better, healthier, wealthier, and all happier and more fulfilled. So today, I want to share the exact strategies that I used to help you find your own profitable business ideas. Good news is that you actually already have a lot of hidden treasure within you that you can explore to make a profitable side hustle. If you think you have nothing valuable to teach, I want you to have an open mind when I say this. Everyone has something to teach. You don't need to know everything in your coaching niche, but you just need to be a few steps ahead of someone else. Now for any Sun House or business ideas to be profitable, it needs to meet three criterias. It's something you already know and you are good at. It's something you need to feel excited and passionate about. and there needs to be a marked demand for that. So I'm going to break this down into these three components. The first component is that your expertise or skill set. This can be something you are actually naturally good at, such as your personal strengths, Or it can be something that you have mastered through your education, your professional experience, your professional training, your personal transformation, etc. That's what people usually come to you for advice about. So this is key because the best side hustle leverage what you already know or what you are good at. So ask yourself, what am I really good at in my current job? What knowledges or skills have accumulated through years of working in my profession or years of working in my industry? Or if it's something you are naturally good at, what do people ask you for advice about? And there could be also something that you feel so easy, but it's not so much for others. Trust me, you already have those valuable skills that can serve as a foundation for your side hustle business. Because we all have something that we actually take that for granted. But for others, they might have no idea how to do it. For example, when I was a fitness coach, I actually thought everyone knows we should minimize eating processed food. But when I talked to my clients, to my surprise that many of my clients, they actually, some of them didn't even know what processed food are. On the same token, when I was working in my daytime job, I used to have clients who were working in the higher education sector. They are very smart and intelligent people. Some of them are professors, lecturers, etc. in the universities. But when it comes to personal finance, when it comes to investments, to my surprise, things that I think they would understand, but they just basically have no idea. So again, that proves the point that we are only experts in the field that we are working in. That's why all of those experience and expertise you think is probably either not so special, but for other people, that's something they are willing to pay for. And those are the opportunity for you to be able to turn those into a business. Now, the second component of a profitable side hustle business idea is that it needs to be something you feel excited to talk about and to teach others. So if it's your passion, that's even better. But if it's not, at least it needs to be something you're enjoying doing, and it needs to be something at least you love doing. Why? Because let's be honest. If you don't really love what you're talking about or what you're doing with your sad business, it's going to feel like another job rather than something that excites you. So the level of excitement and enjoyment is what actually will keep you going while things get tough for your sad hustle. So ask yourself, what do I love talking about, even if when I'm off the clock? Or what would I be doing if I didn't have to work or if I didn't have to earn money? And here is a twist. Your passion should actually connect with your expertise. It doesn't mean that it has to be the same thing, but finding where the two overlap is the key. Let's say you're passionate about health and fitness. and maybe you are also a person who's very organized or who's really good with productivity. So you might create a business helping people plan and achieve their fitness goals and teach them how to stay on track amongst their busy schedule. Here's the thing, having a profitable side hustle is about making money in the way that aligns with your skills, your passions, your experience, so that you can create something sustainable alongside your 9 to 5 job. The third component is market demand. So this is a crucial step because we need to validate the profitability of our side hustle ideas. You can have all the passions in the world and you can have the most refined skill set and experience, but if no one wants to pay for it, still it's not going to be a business. So how do you actually figure out if there is a demand for your ideas? You start by doing your marked research. So these days you probably can find anything or everything on the internet. So go online and start looking at what's already out there in your area of your skills and your passions. And look for if people are already offering similar services and what's missing in other people's service that you could provide. And also look for if people are already paying for this type of product or service. For example, maybe there is a service that being offered, but it's not very well executed, or maybe it doesn't cater a specific niche. You can also join online communities where your potential clients hang out. Listen to the problems people are discussing. What are they struggling with and what questions are they asking? So engage in conversations in places like Facebook groups, LinkedIn, or some niche forums to understand the needs of your ideal clients. You can also conduct informal market research by reaching out to your family and friends, colleagues, and asking them what they would find helpful. Now, if you want to dive deep into this process, I created a free ebook. It's called five steps to find profitable ideas for your side hustle online business. So that has the step-by-step instructions to help you through a go through this process. Okay, now you know what a profitable side hustle idea should look like. I see a lot of people make some common mistakes when they are choosing a side hustle idea. And I want to break down three top mistakes and I want to help you avoid them. The first mistake is chasing trends. Maybe you hear about someone making really good money with dropshipping or selling something on Amazon. And you think, Hey, I should do that too. It looks so easy. But here's the thing, just because something is trending, it doesn't mean that it's the right thing for you to do. Because if you are not genuinely excited about it, or if you are not really skilled in that area, it's going to be hard to sustain the long-term success. Because when the market changes, you will be left struggling to keep up, especially if your heart isn't fully in it. Trends come and go, but a side hustle that aligns with your expertise, your skills, and your passion is timeless. You actually really want to build something that lights you up, something that you enjoy doing even on the tough days. So instead of chasing what's hot right now, focus on what's meaningful to you and what the problem you actually can solve with your unique skill set. The second mistake is that you try to be everything to everyone. When your thought house is too broad and you are trying to help everyone, you end up helping no one. This is especially the case when you just started out, because you will struggle to gain traction because your messaging will be too scattered. It's going to be hard to stand out because people won't know exactly what you stand for or how you can help them. It will be so much easier to grow a business when you are solving a specific problem for a specific group of people because your message resonates deeply with them. So you need to get clear on who your ideal clients is and what that specific problem is that you're solving for them. Ask yourself questions such as what is the one specific transformation you can offer? Or what the specific results can you help someone achieve? So where you can answer these questions clearly, your business will shift from being just another product or service on the market to a valuable solution that your ideal clients are willing to invest in. The last mistake I want to mention here is jumping in without testing your idea first. I get it why you are excited about an idea you want to go all in and make it happen. But here's the truth. You don't need to have everything figured out or invest a ton of time or money up front. In fact, it is actually better to start small and test your ideas in the real-life scenario. before you fully commit to it. So you can do that by offer your service on the smaller scale. This could mean taking on some, you know, few clients for free and get some feedback or taking on some clients at lower rate and either running a, a beta program or pilot program, et cetera, or even just to get the feedback from your ideal clients to validate your idea. You know, as what we mentioned previously in the market research part. So use this phase to learn, to adjust, and improve. Understand what works, what doesn't, and what are your clients say that they actually need more of. So the feedback you gather is invaluable and those will help you refine your offer. So when you're ready to scale, you already have what you need. This approach will not only minimize your risk, but also ensures that you are creating something people actually want and are willing to pay for. So it is far better to pivot and adjust earlier on than to invest too much time and money into an idea that might not really resonate with your future clients. So there you have it, finding a profitable side hustle idea, start with knowing yourself, knowing what you are passionate and excited to talk about, understanding your strength, your skill set, and identifying a real need in the market. Then you validate the idea by doing your market research and talking to your ideal clients directly to understand what's going to help them. It is normal that if you are not getting it right from the start. But taking action, testing your ideas, and being willing to pivot and evolve as you go is the key.
