Wistoria: Wand and Sword Season 1 Review

Manny Season 3 Episode 1

In this episode of Adonime, we’re diving into the first season of Wistoria: Wand and Sword, a fantasy-action anime that blends magical school tropes with a powerful underdog story. Is this just another magic show—or is there something deeper here for believers?

We’ll break down the content in two parts: a spoiler-free section where I share the overall tone, themes, and content warnings—and then a spoiler-filled dive where I reflect on key character arcs.

We’ll also touch on the show’s approach to magic, violence, and a few suggestive moments—what to be aware of, and what we can learn biblically through it all.

Is this a show I can safely recommend to Christians? Can fantasy point us to real truth? Tune in and find out!

Manny:

What's going on, fam? Welcome to the Adonime Podcast, where we watch anime with the redemptive eyes of a Christian believer. My name is Manny, and today we're going to be doing a season review, right? I'm going to be splitting the episode between spoiler-free and a spoiler section. And it's a season one review of the new anime Wistoria Wand and Sword. I'm going to be talking about what this anime is about, the synopsis, and then I'm going to get into the material, the content of the anime. And I'll start off with the non-spoiler content for you guys that might be considering watching this anime in the future or are probably watching it right now. And then I'll make sure to let you guys know once I start the spoiler section of this episode. So let's get right into it. Before we dive into the breakdown with some deep reflections, let me give you a quick snapshot of what Wistoria 1 and Sword is all about, right? So in this world, humanity was once under serious threat from these mysterious enemies, and they were called the Celestial Hosts. And these are some straight up terrifying beings, right? the evil in this world. But there were these five legendary mages that teamed up and they defeated these celestial hosts. So to keep those things from ever coming back, these mages, also known as the Magia Vander, they created this dome. It's like a magical dome. And they built a tower to contain these celestial hosts. So with every generation, the five strongest mages are chosen to guard the dome from the top of what's called the wizard's tower, right? So this is where it gets interesting. This is where we meet our main character, Will Serfort, which is a six-year student at a magic academy. So the interesting thing about him is that he can't use magic at all, at all. So in a magic school, that's kind of a big deal. So he's constantly looked down on by the other students and some of the teachers. But here's the twist about Will. Will is physically gifted. So while everyone else is casting spells, Will's out here swinging a sword, defeating monsters and surviving off basically his pure grit skill and some magical items that he can actually use. But he only has one goal. to fulfill a childhood promise that he made to his best friend named El Faria, who actually became one of the Magia Vander years ago. And they both promised each other as children to climb the wizard's tower together. And no matter how much the odds are stacked against Will, he always refuses to give up on that dream. So yeah, it's kind of a magical underdog story with heart, action, And a lot to chew on when it comes to courage, perseverance, and identity. So it's very interesting. So a couple of details about this anime. It premiered in the summer of 2024. It is rated PG-13. And the studios who made it are Actus and Bandai Namco Pictures. So let's get into the Christian Guide categories. And we'll start off with the first category, which is sex and nudity. So one thing I caught is that Will is shirtless in a scene. Not a huge deal, not sexual at all. And there is an indirect mention of private areas. And there's a scene with two guys bathing together. But it's not explicit. It's actually pretty casual. Not anything... Nothing sexual or nothing like that. And you can't see anything. Joe's only a mention. And you just know that they're bathing together, but it's not together together. If you know what I mean. So that's about it. It doesn't have anything else other than that. So the second category, violence and gore. Okay, this show is pretty bloody, pretty gory. There are body parts being cut apart. so it can be it can be pretty intense in that sense okay so watch out for that the third category is profanity there's really nothing no profanity at all the fourth category drugs and alcohol none whatsoever and the fifth and last category is scary scenes well the scarier scenes were the monsters so some of the monsters here uh maybe for younger viewers will find it a little scary but it's not anything too bad so let's keep going with the positive and negative points that i saw in this anime and all of these points are going to be non-spoiler so i'll let you guys know once i hit the spoiler the spoiler section okay so some of the positive points well the mages in this story are heroes that fight against darkness right so this is your this is a classic good versus evil setup Right. So it's portraying characters who stand up against threats to humanity. Right. So this is something very good to appreciate. Another positive point I saw was helping your enemies. Okay. So this is actually a really big theme. And it's not helping your enemies in the sense of helping them mercifully, like having mercy on your enemies when they are in their pit, in the bottom of their... their life. So this is, this is a big thing that's echoed, um, in this anime. And that's also echoed in, um, in the Bible for us Christians, right? As the book of Matthew chapter five, verse 44, it says, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Right? So it's a reminder of the power of mercy and second chances. And I really appreciate that about this anime. Okay. So another positive point I found was the point of doing your best for love's sake, right? So Will has that goal, right? As we mentioned in the synopsis, to get to the top of the tower with Elfaria. And he loves her, right? He... wants to fulfill that for her. So everything that he is doing, he's trying to make it work without having any magic. And he's doing it because he loves her. So he's motivated by love, which reminds us of 1 Corinthians 16, verse 14. Let all that you do be done in love. And not just will, but there are several characters that are motivated by love, whether it's friends or goals or personal promises like we just mentioned this is this is a really good point that the anime makes okay and then the last positive point i'm going to share is that discrimination is challenged in this anime right so there is a clear moment where discrimination towards in this case dwarves right doors are like the low the low in this in this world and when they're being discriminated against by some students of the school it's portrayed as wrong and it's rebuked right and and i love that you know it's important for us to remember okay there um there could be some bad scenes happening but is the anime telling us that it's okay to do that or is it going against that is it condemning that and this is definitely condemning discrimination right the book of james chapter 2 verse 9 tells us if you show favoritism you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers okay so it's very important and it's a very important lesson that i really appreciate about this anime too so let's go let's get into the negative points right still non-spoiler don't worry the one negative point i have here is the magic and the incantations okay so Obviously, this is a big part of the world, and it includes fantasy-style spellcasting, right? And the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 18, verses 10 through 12, it warns us about real-world sorcery, right? Let no one be found among you who practices divination or sorcery, okay? So while this shows magic is fictional, Right? It's purely fictional. It's not real. It's not based on real incantations. It's not based on real sorcery. And it's tied to the world building of this anime. We have to use discernment. Okay? If you feel convicted, pray about whether it's wise to watch this show. Okay? Some people might not find it comfortable. Some people can accept that it's fictional, fantasy. Right? And it doesn't bother them. As long as we understand that in the real world, this is wrong. We don't dive into sorcery. We don't dive into divination. None of that. Okay? So that's the one negative point that I can share that has no spoilers. So from here, if you're just here for the spoiler-free heads up, yes, I'd say Wistoria is a watchable pick for Christians. Who are okay with fantasy elements. And a bit of action heavy violence. And it has. Some interesting. Positive points that we can learn from. That are actually very biblical. Okay. So now. For those of y'all who want to go deeper. This is now jumping into the spoiler section. So. I warned you. And you can come back to this later. Once you watch the rest of it. Okay so. positive points from here, okay? We see Sion's bowling revealing his insecurity and desire to be seen, right? So Sion is one of the students who is in this competition, in the tournament that they are doing towards the end of the season. And And he's been the bully throughout most of the anime. And then he's confronted with it, right? Once he sees Will and how strong Will is and how merciful he is towards him, we see a bit of his backstory where he has this insecurity, right? And because of that insecurity, he wants to be seen by others. So he tries to put down other people and make himself seem better, better than everybody else. So it's actually a beautiful moment for Sion where he's being redeemed. He's recognizing his mistakes, right? And it's like his arrogance masks his pain, right? And it reminds us how pride often covers brokenness. But if we let those things go, in a practical sense, if we let those things go and we present them before God and we humble ourselves, we can receive mercy. We can receive freedom from that. The book of Galatians, chapter 6, verse 3. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Okay? So I thought that was a really good positive point that we could get from this anime. Another positive point I saw was Will's unwavering courage. So throughout this whole anime, season one, we see how Will is mocked. He's pushed aside because he lacks magic. So everyone looks down on him. But even then, Will has this unwavering courage. He stays focused on his mission. He wants to make the right decision regardless of everything that's going on around him. And this is beautiful. And it reminded me of Galatians 6, verse 9. Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up. beautiful beautiful and and it's a great reminder for us when we live our lives righteously before god to not let other people around us or situations around us put us down but instead stay focused on christ right stay focused on christ stay focused on living for him stay focused on the mission remembering who you're doing this for you're doing this for your savior the person who died for you on the cross, who gave his life for you. And because he gave his life for us, we can move forward. We can get through this and God will be with us. Amen. Another positive point I saw was Wigdahl's redemption arc. So Wigdahl is another student that took a lot of pride in his abilities, right? But only on the surface. So this guy is one of the top students who uses magic very well or whatever, or at least that's the way he likes to make it seem. But in reality, we see part of his backstory where he admits that he felt worthless and he took it out on others to hide his flaws. And he actually humbles himself. He realizes his mistake and his turnaround is powerful. Okay, much like science. And it reminded me of James chapter four, verse 10. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up. Right? This was a beautiful, beautiful moment. And I think we can really appreciate that. Another positive thing I found was, and this is a quote from Will that says, we're not geniuses. So if we don't make mistakes, we'll never move forward. So this is where they have the big battle towards the end of the first season. They have the big battle against this crazy strong monster. And they're afraid. They're afraid in this moment to fight. And I really like this quote because it's humbling and it reminds us that we're human. Here he's saying we're not geniuses. But in a sense, I say we're human. So if we don't make mistakes, we'll never move forward. And what does that mean? Or at least the way that I think we can take it is we have to understand that we're human. And though Christ lives in us, right? Christ is perfect. And he lives in us. We have perfection in us. And through the Holy Spirit, we can... obey the will of God in perfect harmony with him. But we're human and we're going to make mistakes. And being afraid of making mistakes sometimes can hold us back from living for God freely, right? God has set us free from sin, from shame. And because of that, we can live freely and joyfully before God. So I think this was great because we have to get rid of the fear of making mistakes. We have to understand we are human. We will make mistakes, but we have to move forward. We have to move forward. As long as we are in sync with God and His Holy Spirit that guides us, yes, sometimes we are going to get it wrong, but as long as God is guiding us and our hearts are clean before him and our intentions, God is going to guide as well. He is a good father and he's going to guide as well. So even in spite of my mistakes, God is going to work everything out for good. And we have to remember that. And that's a great quote. I love that quote. Another positive point I saw was, we're not beginning to respect will, right? So as we had kind of mentioned, will shows mercy. instead of revenge to Wignall, right? Wignall is one of the strongest mages, but actually felt pretty worthless. And because of Will's mercy, it inspired Wignall to change. And it's a moving picture of grace in action, right? How having mercy on our enemies can actually convert them, can actually soften their hearts, right? And it's a great picture of how God loves us, right? Even though we were enemies of him, even though we were enemies of God, God had mercy on us. And because of that, we can love him even more because what a wonderful love that is that you would love your enemies. It's incredible. So that was a great picture of grace. And then the final positive point I saw here, and you're noticing there's a lot of positive points. But this is the final one I'm going to share. It's Will's driving fear, right? The fear that drives Will is losing others, not death. So this is one of my favorite parts of this anime, one of my favorite lessons, right? So when they are fighting this enemy towards the end of the season one, and... And everybody is afraid and scared that they're about to die. And they notice that Will is continuing to fight. And it's almost like as if he's not scared. And they ask him, where is that coming from? How are you not scared? And he says, I am. But he is not afraid of dying. He is afraid of dying. But he is more afraid of losing others. Of losing others that they would die. man so his courage comes from love doesn't come from pride no it comes from losing others he's more afraid of running from his friends than facing danger that was beautiful that was a great picture of loving your friends right it reminds me of john chapter 15 verse 13. Greater love has no one than this to lay down one's life for one's friends. That was a great picture of that. It was beautiful, beautiful. That was one of my favorite moments of the anime. I was like, Will, that's the man. That's the guy right there. So yeah, so now to the negative points. I have no more. I have no negative points up to this point. So in reality, the only negative point out of this whole anime that I got were the... uh the magic incantations uh the gory might be a bit much for for some people for younger viewers um but definitely the magic incantations it could tone it down just a tiny bit and that's the only negative point that i have and considering all of that considering all of that the the final ranking that i'm giving this anime the season one for wistoria wand and sword is a 9 out of 10 okay so what could have made it a 10 the magic and incantations that is that is the one flaw that i see from this anime other than that there's a lot to love here there's redemption there's perseverance there's humility sacrificial love those are all godly qualities we can definitely learn from that can definitely inspire us but again it does come with a fantasy setting and that includes some magic some violent and gory moments um we just have to be mindful of that right so if that stuff doesn't bother you if we can be mature and understand okay this I will not dive into this in real life. I will take it as a fantasy setting. Then I think there's a lot to enjoy here. There's a lot to love and learn from here. So that's it. Let me know what you guys think. Do you guys agree? Do you guys disagree? Feel free to share. Feel free to comment on this episode. Don't forget to like and subscribe. And leave us a good rating on whichever platform you listen to. And I'll see you guys on the next one. Grace and peace.
