John Merrill Kirkman shares a powerful message about the true character of God and why understanding His goodness changes everything. Drawing from author John Bushman and scripture in James 1:17, this episode challenges the common belief that God causes suffering to teach lessons. Instead, listeners are reminded that we live in a fallen world, and God’s role is not to hurt us but to heal, strengthen, comfort, and walk beside us through life’s pain and struggles. When we truly understand that God is good, it transforms the way we trust, pray, and connect with Jesus Christ.

God is the good guy. This is John Merrill Kirkman with Welcome with the Savior Podcast Daily Episode. Have you ever wondered what God is really like? Listen to these words from the author, John Bushman, author of King Before Kingdom, incredible book, by the way. Have you ever heard people say things like, Well, God won't give you anything you can't handle? Or God gives us trials to help us grow. What do these seemingly innocent words say about the character of God? Is God just giving us difficulties and problems and cancer and disasters to see what we do with these challenges? If you believe God is the one causing the problem, then no wonder people would want to run from God and hope he doesn't notice them. God is not causing the problems. This is a fallen world that we live in. Terrible things just happen. God wants to help us through the difficult things. He wants to help us and heal us, not hurt us. He wants to encourage, not discourage, build up, not break down, bless us, not curse us, comfort, not afflict us, strengthen us, not weaken us, save us, not condemn us, ease our burdens, not create more of them. God is the good guy, and unless we really understand how he wants to help us and be there for us, then we'll never really put our trust and faith in Jesus Christ. You need to understand God's goodness more than anything else. End of quote from John Bushman. That message lines up beautifully with Scripture. In James 1.17, we read, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights. Notice what that teaches us. God is not the source of our pain, he's the source of every good thing in our lives. So when life gets hard, and it will, oh, it does. We don't run from God. We don't run from Jesus Christ. We run to Him. Because He's not the one breaking you down, He's the one holding you together. He's not the author of your suffering. He's the author of your healing. And when you begin to truly understand that God is good, and that Jesus Christ is good, that He is there for you, and that He's not against you, that changes everything. It changes how you pray, it changes how you trust Him. It changes how you feel about Jesus Christ. It changes how you see Jesus Christ because you realize Jesus Christ isn't trying to make your life harder. He's trying to walk with you through the pain, through the obstacles, through the struggles, through the challenges, through the failures, and bring you home.
