Revelation Series #10: The Time is Now. Chapter 1
Revelation Chapter 1 establishes a strong sense of immediacy regarding the events it describes. In the very first verse, John writes that this is “the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place” (Revelation 1:1, NKJV). The phrase “must shortly take place” (Greek: en tachos) suggests an imminent fulfillment, not something reserved for a distant future. Similarly, verse 3 reinforces this urgency: “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.” The Greek phrase ho kairos engys (“the time is near”) further emphasizes that these events were relevant to John’s immediate audience.
This theme continues in Revelation 1:7, which states, “Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him.” The reference to those who pierced Jesus (i.e., first-century Jews and Romans) implies that some of the judgment aspects of Christ’s coming were imminent in their generation. Finally, in Revelation 1:19, John is instructed to write about “the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this,” reinforcing a chronological progression starting with John’s own time.
All these statements suggest that Revelation was not primarily written for a far-off future generation but for the first-century church, addressing events that were about to unfold in their lifetime.
