Ryan Johnson (00:00):

So I know you heard me say it about a thousand times already so far. If you've been following these podcasts, start small, do small wins for yourself and celebrate those small wins. But why is that so important? Well, you shut up at the right day because today we are going to go over that. Thank you so much for tuning into the Mr. Mind podcast. Your twice a week dose of living well, even if you haven't kept up with your New Year's resolution, you're still living well, hopefully. Oh yeah, tiny wins. What the heck are those? Why the hell do you keep saying it, Ryan? Tiny, tiny, tiny wins. Why celebrate those tiny wins? Well, it's very important, but what are tiny wins? Well, tiny wins are those small, small, seemingly insignificant wins. Those little accomplishments that might seem minor, but they have a huge compounding effect over time.
(01:15)
I mean, you can think of those tiny wins as little tiny drops of water that eventually are able to fill up a bucket. Yeah, those things, and they matter. They matter a hella of a lot. Why? Well, they're momentum builders. Guys. Every time you succeed, no matter how small, it signals your brain, I can do this, I can do this. And that builds momentum. And guess what happens when momentum is built? Confidence comes after. Confidence comes after momentum. You see, accomplishing even a tiny goal, it'll boost your confidence and it keeps you motivated for the next step, even the smallest one. And just like compounding interest in finance, those tiny wins grow exponentially. That one pushup a day could lead to a workout habit six months from now. It could lead to those muscles, that summer body, that healthy heart or whatever your fitness goals is.
(02:14)
It all can start. I mean, it all will start with one pushup, a journey of a thousand miles. How does that start? One step. Small winds really, really compound with fitness. Starting with one glass of water in the morning, a 10 minute walk or just a set of squats. Now these choices will push you into significant health improvement, compounded it will. I had this friend and he called me up one day, he used to play basketball, and he was like, dude, you never believe he said what? He said, A man. I pulled my hamstring. It sucks. I want to make sure that I stretch and this never happens again. Do you know anyone that knows some good stretches? I said, well, maybe Google. But he wanted me to connect with someone. So I did. One of my friends, she's an avid runner, and I asked her, I said, Hey, what are some stretches?
(03:07)
And she told me some stretches and some videos to look up, which then I forwarded to my friend six months later. Turns out that he signed up to run a 5K and actually ended up completing it. Now, this guy was not the healthiest guy ever, but he started his journey with one single step. In that single step was stretching, making sure that he didn't get hurt. Maybe that's what was holding it back. He didn't want to run before because maybe he thought, I just don't want to pull something. I don't want something to be hurt. But he figured it out and now he does the 5K every single year. One step guys, it all starts with one step. It's all about starting where you are. When is the perfect time Now, now is the perfect time. Let me give you an example of tiny wins and productivity.
(04:04)
You're clearing one email, you're setting a timer for five minutes of focused work or just jotting down your top priority for the day. These actions might seem small, but they break the cycle of procrastination and get you moving. Here's a tip. If it takes less than two minutes, do it immediately. That's a tiny win in action. You have to take out the trash, take out the dang trash, man. If it takes two minutes, just do it. Here's a mindset win. Practice your gratitude by listening to one thing that you're thankful for, and it takes 10 seconds, but over time, it rewires your brain for positivity. It does. Those people that are cynical, that just walking around, just breathing negativity into the world. Well, that didn't start off like that. It started small and that compounded for them, but in the wrong direction, assuming they want to be positive in life.
(05:02)
But yeah, that's what happens. Practice gratitude. Guys. One thing right now, what are you grateful for? And you're going to feel resistance, and that's your brain trying to push back against something that it's not familiar with because your brain, our brains want comfort in anything that's not comfortable. Well, it's going to push against it. I don't think about that. You feel weird if feel really corny, you feel really dumb. We all know what's on the other side of uncomfortable. The other side of that feeling is progress. So the question is how to create tiny wins in your life. You got to start small. You have to start specific. So pick one area of your life rather it be relationships, health, work. So you can identify the smallest possible step you can take today. If your goal is to exercise, maybe your tiny win is putting on your workout shoes.
(05:56)
I simple as that. Putting your workout shoes next to the door because guess what? You have to leave through the door. Maybe not. Maybe there's a garage or something like that, but you know what I mean. Whichever entrance or exit you exit from the most, put your workout shoes near them. See where that takes you and make sure you celebrate progress. Not perfection, not perfection. You want to celebrate progress and progress is about showing up. If you miss a day, don't beat yourself up. Your focus should be on consistent. See, not perfection. Do not beat yourself up. And that's something that I needed to work on myself for the longest time. Do not beat yourself up, Ryan. You missed a day of working out when you were supposed to and your mind got the better part of you and said, relax. Relax today at the end, Ryan, you're so stupid.
(06:59)
You're an idiot. Don't beat yourself up. I remember consistency, not perfection. For me, a tiny one is completing something that's on my checklist. That's a tiny one for me. I create the checklist the night before. I'll go over it in the morning and when I complete it, oh yeah, that's a good win for me. You know what the first thing on my list is? Well wake up and brush my teeth and get the Invisalign clean, but after that, make the bed. When I make that bed, I feel good. It's a win. Do I jump up and down and clap my hands and text about it and tweet about it? No, I don't do that. It's a celebration in my mind. I look at it, it's complete. I open the windows, let the light blanket the bed, and that's a win for me. Guess what? I started off the day with two wins.
(07:55)
Let's keep that momentum going. So what are two wins that you could do in the morning, assuming you're getting out of a bed? Maybe make the bed, but my spouse is in it. That's fine. Go have a backup one. Because guess what? A lot of times I wake up before my wife, I am unable to make that bed, but I still do clean my teeth and then I'll work out. And when I say work out, it doesn't have to be something insane, 30, 40 minutes or anything like that. When you start, just do something small. Five pushups, 10 pushups. Why not? I can't do five pushups. That's fine. Do one. You can do it. Just start. Because it's not about perfection, it's about consistency. So you're going to want to write these down. You're going to want to celebrate them, share them with someone. Because you know what?
(08:51)
Seeing your progress, no matter how small, it reinforces the habit. Hey, look at this, I can do it. It reinforces yourself. You see it, you see it, you do it, you do it. Here's a tip for you guys. Get some kind of habit tracker or even just like a sticky note on your mirror. You could put it on your mirror. When you brush your teeth, you can see it and seeing those check marks, it adds fuel to your fire. There's something about it, I don't know what it is, but something about checking off those damn things that you need to do. When you check that off, there's a little dopamine hit that runs through your body and it's interesting, and that keeps you going. It'll keep you going. Something else you're going to want to do is this. You're going to want to leverage the power of the 1% rule.
(09:35)
And what is that 1% rule? Well, very good question. Focus on getting just 1% better every single day. A 1% improvement compounded daily adds up to a massive growth by the end of the year. How many days is there? 365. The last time I checked, how better are you now than last year? Are you 365% better? How can you do it? So there you have it, guys. Very small stuff and things to do. Let's go over them. Start small and specific. Let's go over them. Start small. Let's go over them. Start small and specific. Track your wins. Celebrate progress, not perfection. Progress not perfection. Leverage the power of the 1% rule. Get better every single day, 1%. And if you don't, well, that's okay. Don't beat yourself up. Tiny wins of the secret sauce to big changes, whether it's drinking one extra glass of water, sending that email that you've been putting off or writing a single sentence in your book.
(10:42)
These small victories matter. Don't underestimate their power. If this episode resonated with you, take action today. And when I say action, not only do I mean subscribe, and I mean action for yourself where it is. If you don't want to be good, if you don't want to be better for yourself, be better for the people that love you. Because when you show up better, guess what? You show up better not only in your life, but in their life as well. Thank you so much for tuning into the Mr. Mind Podcast. Can you please do me a favor? Yes, track your success, but not only that, go ahead and send that very last person that you messaged a text. Can you send them a text that says, Hey, I hope you're smiling because I No, don't write that. That might be too crazy. I'm thinking about you. Then depending on who you text, it might be bad. How about this? Send 'em a text that says this. Hey, I hope you're having one heck of a morning, one heck of an afternoon, and even better evening, because you never know. They just might need it. Aloha.
