My Maasai Journey, Episode 5.

My Maasai Journey, Episode 5. Recorded at night in Kenya, beside a roaring River. With the singing of crickets, which will form a background to this podcast recording.

Day 9 January the 22nd, 2025. This day - this week in general - is largely dedicated to sitting under our favorite tree for shade called 'wait-a-moment' in the local tongue. It has thick leaves offering a nice canopy of branches, but beware when walking below it or laying on a blanket below. Its twigs often drop to the ground, carrying thorns as long, thin, and sharp as needles. These easily penetrate the soles of rubber and even leather sandals. We've been spiked more than once.

However, these were not idle days of rest and simple daydreaming. We were so busy journaling that the morning soon became early evening. But,there were rare moments of lying on our backs staring up through the dense leaves. To stare at the shimmer of winking blue of the sky between the branches. It seemed, lying there in the warmth of the African Sun below the cooling shade, that the blue of the sky was now the twinkling stars of night and the blanket of thorn branches and green leaves above us was the dark mantle of the night sky.

Here, the village sounds of our Maasai environment seeped around us - tropical birds singing and trilling, the laughter and play of small children whenever toddlers emerged from the large tin shed hut beside us that serves as a playgroup preschool for tiny ones, the occasional bleating of passing goats, the cluck of inquisitive roosters, or the roar of a truck or motorbike passing up the steep mountain trail.

We whiled away several days, journaling our adventure and snatching in our enthralled spirits, the majestic theatre of Maasai village life - with no plan and no destination other than just being in the now. Except for, of course, the journaling, the podcasting, and other duties, which I'd agree to do long before I came to this Maasia village; the adventure you're listening to now was 15 years in the planning. This might seem like a long time, but I've been a full-time professional storyteller, working with indigenous cultures for 30 years, and I know that sometimes getting underneath the skin inside the core of an indigenous community takes a lot of time. A lot of building of trust, a lot of m
