Decoding Yourself is a podcast focused on self-awareness and personal growth through the lens of the Personality Code, a framework Shannon developed after realizing her learning style differed from typical self-help approaches. Drawing from her background in leadership development and salon work, she discusses how understanding your own personality type can improve communication, break limiting beliefs, and help you implement growth at your own pace rather than forcing yourself to mimic others. The show, now in Season 3, expands from its earlier “Decoding Your Clients” focus on client relationships to deeper self-reflection on beliefs and decision-making.

Before I start to break down the personalities in the Personality Code I want you to look into yourself. Without me giving you the answers you want, it's time to answer these questions and deep dive into who you are.
Spending time paying attention to how you act, think, interact, and communicate. I ask some questions that I hope you answer and see yourself more clearly then ever before. Get some friends and family involved in this fun experiment. It may help you to see how others think the answers should be. It may shock you.
Next episode I will jump into breaking down the details of the personalities and you will see why knowing the truest, honest answers will help. There isn't a right or wrong answer here, it's all about understanding you! So relax while you listen or watch this episode.
Welcome back to Decoding Yourself. I'm Shannon Karhoff. I'm not going to jump right into the action steps. So bear with me today. I really feel like you need to discover and investigate who you are before I jump into the details so you can pinpoint exactly who you are. And then we'll be able to jump into a little bit more. Have you ever heard if you don't know what you stand for, you can fall for anything? Well, for me, the personality code is a foundation. If you don't have a strong foundation, you're going to follow anyone. And I think you need to really understand what you're who you are, what your strengths are. And it will make yourself feel so understood. It's so empowering once you actually know why you do certain things, why you think a certain way, why you feel wonderful by doing certain things or in your in certain environments. So today I want you to question yourself. As I ask these questions, I want you to think about what really works for you, what you really like. If you were anything like me when I first heard about this, I had no clue. I just didn't know that we were so naturally ingrained different, that there's different ways that everyone feels seen and heard and understood, and how you like to run your life and how you like the information. So really take this time to look inward at yourself. And if you have questions, if you're hesitant on how you do it, talk to a loved one, talk to one of your best friends who's been there through your life and seen your life progression and know where your natural line is. Last year, when I made this podcast, I had different friends and clients reach out to me and was like, I can't believe this because it's amazing. How did the person I knew then turn into the person you are now? How did this happen? How did I go from very rough in my 20s to a little bit more smooth? Now I'll be honest, I was pretty incognito through all of my growth and life lessons. I've been through the wranger in my life, and I think it has all strengthened me along the way. I've been very internal, trying to process and figure things out because I see myself with my faults and my struggles and trying to figure it out. I want to get as good as I can, and I believe this all started with the personality profiles. My personal one is a personality code. But the first thing I want you to really think, it's basic. Do you feel when you're overworked, you're tired, and you just need to recharge or relax? Do you go towards crowds or do you go towards solitude? This is pretty telling on if you like to be social and outgoing and you like to be part of the crowd and the party, and you love, you get recharged by being around others. And the opposite are the people that actually get drained by being around crowds. And you like your solitudes, you like being more relaxed, maybe nature, not just sitting at home quietly. You like to go investigate things, you like to sit and read a book. It's the black and white of personalities that I want you to start with. Most people, but yes, duh, I like to go out and socialize with my friends and millions of people and go to concerts, and it's very specific for them. And they don't realize sometimes that the opposite is true for other people, that that actually what drains one group of people actually energizes another. So figure out which one you are, and your lifestyle will be very telling. And it's it's not a bad thing, it's a good thing. So start there. So just mentally process this, chat down your notes if you're that type of person. Just think about it. The next one I want you to think about whenever you buy something new, you have to construct something like those magical IKEA boxes that are all over the place that you bring it home. Do you read the directions or do you just jump right in? It's very telling for personalities because, again, night or day, there's a mix of people that kind of glance it over and then jump in. But it's pretty funny watching people whenever they have to put something together. Like I just got a kid's toy from a fast food restaurant. I keep little toys in my salon suite for especially the ones that have wheels, like little cars and things. And it came with directions on how to put stickers on it. And that made me laugh. It was like, do you read the directions? Do you look at it, or you just create your own magic? So there you go. Okay, here's another one. And not everyone will understand exactly what I'm talking about. But think about the last time at work something crazy happened, the printer stopped working, or your computer crashed. What kind of person are you? Are you one who just jumps in and tries to fix things to solve the issue? Or do you make a call to tech and have someone else take care of it? You're at a gas station and you're getting a soda and you took the last straw or the last cup. Do you go talk to someone and say, hey, I just took the last one, you might want to refill it? Or is it not even a thought in your mind and you just go on your merry way? This is a telling situation on if you like to jump in and help solve the issue, or if it's not my problem and I'm on on my way. It's not my problem to solve. So is this you? Which one is it for you? I I love seeing how people do things. Some things I want you to pay attention to. These are a little bit more subtle when no one is watching, when you're home by yourself, or if you're at work and the boss is in his office, your coworkers are all busy working. What is your natural inclination, your thought process? Is your head down working hard, not thinking about anything else? Are you the person that has their phone out and you're doom scrolling and doing your own thing? Are you the person that is fighting a nap the whole time? Are you the person that is not at your desk or cubicle and you're over there talking to Sally Sue and getting the gossip or telling them the latest, greatest story of your life? Which one are you? Pay attention. And you might laugh if you actually go and you look around your office or your work environment wherever you work. And once you understand the personalities, you're going to be able to pinpoint different people in your environment and laugh a little bit because you'll be like, oh, that's why they do that. Wonderful. This is so much fun. So the next thing is pay attention to your thoughts. I've been naturally ingrained to pay attention to my inner thoughts and how I work things out and the tone of my thoughts. This is something that I naturally didn't do. It was just like uh background music constantly going. And then I learned through the leadership development stuff that I learned in my 20s that you have power over your inner thoughts and what it's telling you and what it's gearing you towards. So pay attention to your inner thoughts. Is it positive? Is it negative? This is very telling on your personalities. Pay attention to what you're saying. Because if it's very cup half full or cup half empty kind of a mindset. So pay attention to what you naturally are. Again, if you don't know, ask someone that's close to you. Because they will tell you if your cup half full or cup half empty. And it's amazing how many people think that their cup is half empty, think their cup half full. Because there's a nice little spin to it, but there's, yeah, pay attention. It's great stuff. Here's the next thing. Notice how you walk into a room. Are you looking around, checking out the area? Are your head is down and you're just walking the path to where you get there. You know exactly what you're going towards. You don't care left or right. It's not who cares? I don't want to have a conversation. I don't want to see anyone. I'm just here to do my job and get it done. Or I'm just here to pick up whatever I need to pick up. Or are you the person that looks around, scans everything, smiles, waves at everyone, says, Hey, how you doing? This is great. When you're at the cashier at a store, are you one of those that walks up and they say, Hi, how are you today? And you're like, Yeah. You cut down the conversation, you just do what I have to do and get out. Or are you the person that says, I'm great, how are you? And I just did this. And can you believe I ran into this person over there? And oh, it's just a wonderful rainy day outside. And which one are you? Are you the person starting conversations? Are you the person who's just don't want a conversation? You don't want to make eye contact. Which one are you? This is very telling. And here's another one. When you interact with your friends and people you like, are you different than whenever you are with strangers? Think of it. Just pay attention. And sometimes it's natural, you know. You know your friends and you can just BS with them a little bit easier compared to strangers. And you're starting up a conversation, you're getting to know them. But pay attention because sometimes you know your true self when you're the most comfortable. You're not putting on your professional face or your persona or anything like that. You're actually able to be in your in your element and you understand exactly who you are. So I'm a hairstylist by trade. So whenever I used to have to answer the salon phone, you put on your salon voice, your professional voice. Hello, thank you for calling today. Or is that your natural voice? Or is it more of the, yeah, what do you want? We all have our professional voices, I believe. Probably a little bit more rare now, but we still have our professional persona that we put on. I don't want your business persona to be a factor in this. I want you to focus on the real you when you're comfortable, when no one's watching, when no one's around. You're just walking through a store or you're just walking around town or you're just discussing things with your family members and friends. This is what I want you to pay attention to. Are you any of these things? Pay attention, A or B. And it's data test. I don't even know it. This is something for the next episode. Because this one, I want you to really pay attention to who you are. So if you're anything like me, you have been taught to want to get the right answers. So you forget about what you and sometimes we don't even know who we really are and what we really want because we've been trained to expect to say the right answer, to get the A in the class, to get the approval we want from our parents, our teachers, whatever. I want you to really pay attention to what it feels like for yourself. And it is. It's a crazy thing that sometimes we don't even know what we are. So have fun with it. Create your own little mindset and your own game of figuring out who you really are, because it's hilarious. Because we're like, holy crap, I did not realize I talked this much in my life. Or, huh, I don't think I've had one conversation today. I don't know if I made eye contact with anyone on my drive to work, at work, on my way home, or at night. It's true. There's some people that never make eye contact. And there's some people that can't help but have full eye contact when they're in a conversation. It's personalities. Everyone's different, everyone is so unique. I love it. So have fun with it. Create these things, share this with a friend or a family member and have some laughs with it. Because if you actually compare notes with a friend over this, you will get a laugh because oh my gosh, you didn't know how obnoxious you are with talking constantly, never knowing how to shut up so I can get my two cents in. Or you don't talk at all. I have no clue what the heck you're thinking or talking about, because you are in your own bubble. So listen. Next episode, I'll get into the details, I'll break down the four personality codes, and you'll understand why I'm asking you this. Because if I ask, you might have changed your answer a little bit. But now you have time, maybe a week, to get down to the nitty-gritty, figure yourself out, because it is amazing when you actually take the time to figure out how you think, how you work, how you communicate, and your actions. Oh, the other thing is pay attention to how you actually physically walk into a room. What is your pace? Are you fast-paced? Are you slow-paced? Are you intentional? Or you're just going randomly places. I don't want to give too many details. I don't want to gear you one way or the other. But pay attention to how you actually walk into a room and do you make an entrance? There is a good way. So I'll talk to you next week. If you like this, share it with other people. I would love to hear what people have discovered. Have fun with it and have fun figuring out who you are. See you next week.
