Decoding Yourself
Decoding Yourself is a podcast focused on self-awareness and personal growth through the lens of the Personality Code, a framework Shannon developed after realizing her learning style differed from typical self-help approaches. Drawing from her background in leadership development and salon work, she discusses how understanding your own personality type can improve communication, break limiting beliefs, and help you implement growth at your own pace rather than forcing yourself to mimic others. The show, now in Season 3, expands from its earlier “Decoding Your Clients” focus on client relationships to deeper self-reflection on beliefs and decision-making.

Why We Need the Personality Code
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Now you know what the Personality Code is, but what now? In this episode I help you understand how this knowledge helps you know why it's important.
It is just like learning how to speak to people speaking in another language. How I used this to help me relate to people the opposite of me. From Spanish to Italian in similarities of certain words being similar, just like the Rule Maker and the Direct.. And French to German that have no overlapping properties, just like the Fun Loving and the Steady.
When you know the differences you can have more patience and relatability to each other.

Hi, welcome back. I hope you've listened to a few of the podcasts and understanding what the personality code actually is. I hope you've actually discovered what personality you are. So you can have a better understanding of how the next few things will happen. How does it feel to see yourself in the explanations? Did you this is cool? Yep, that's me, that's me. Or were you more of the what do you mean? What was your experience with figuring out which personality you were? Let me know. I'm interested whenever people actually have a better understanding of different things. And I haven't even gone into a lot of the details, but I feel like whenever you understand yourself a little bit more, you can explain why you do different things a little bit more as you go. So I'm sure some of you are like, yeah, sure, this information is interesting, but what does this have to do with the rest of your life? How does this information actually change my life? Why is this important? And for me, I want you to understand that this is a lot of information on how to understand yourself, to better know how to motivate yourself, understand how you step into situations. If you approach an issue in your life head-on, or if you dodge it, or if you just ignore it. This is huge information on knowing why you do certain things and why the results of your life might show from it. I know for me, I it took me decades to really understand this information and slowly change myself through it. So I've had lots of ups and downs and figured out how each challenge has made me understand why it's important to know what drives me, what pauses me, what is my challenges. Because knowing my weaknesses as my challenges in my life, what I'm doing naturally, causing a roadblock in my life, is something that once I understood why I analysis, paralysis myself, it's easier to move beyond it. Because I've learned how to stay focused, what's the stuff that I want to do, how to motivate myself. But I've also figured out that whenever I go headfirst into something, I ignore a lot of other things in my life. And my health is one of them. I am hard-driven, I have a goal in mind. Who cares if I haven't eaten or haven't slept or haven't done a lot of things? I'm getting the tasks done that need to get done. And I've had some major struggles because of it. So knowing my weaknesses, why I do certain things, have totally revolutionized my life into understanding myself better, how to course correct as I'm in motion of doing things. I'm going about this year totally different because I had to, not because I wanted to. I hit hard against a wall with my health and I had to build myself back up. And I had to learn in a more extreme way this year why I have to take care of my health, why I need to make sure I'm eating properly and sleeping properly and not overworking myself. This was a hard lesson for me. I have pushed myself to extremes to get the results I've been chasing. And now I have to understand that there is a line that I cannot cross so that my health does not perish, or I don't perish. But it is through this whole personality code that I've really had to deep dive into knowing why I push myself so hard, why I can't balance everything in my life because I have this drive in me that I can't stop because I want to get to point A to point B as fast as I can, stay as focused as I can, and a lot of things drop around me. So my personal journey with it has been intense. And I'm hoping with this information, you'll be able to understand why you do certain things and how to motivate yourself, how to balance things in your life a little bit easier so you don't have to hit a wall like I did. I have so many lessons through why personality code has helped me survive in so many different ways. I was not always the easiest person to be around in my 20s and 30s because if you didn't understand the reason why I'm doing certain things, there's a lot of different balances I had to master in myself. And certain people did not fit into that category. And I wasn't always the nicest about it. I've come a long way. I've learned a lot. And I want you to be able to understand the information, make the changes in your life, to make yourself get from point A to point B fast, but in the right way, and not pushing yourself and your the rest of your life away. This might not make sense to you, but this is my whole purpose in doing this. Is I have learned so much in my life from this information that I built a little here, a little here as I've gone through different things. I feel like in my experience, it's been pretty amazing to understand why I do certain things, why I think a certain way, and why I struggle a lot in certain experiences. I'm hoping that you're taking this time to actually look deep into yourself, understanding the things that are happening in your life, the things that you are handling a certain way, and questioning it. Wondering why you do this instead of what you really want to do or what you see other people doing. So here's something I want you to think about. Who do you look up to in your life? Not talking up, maybe it's your parents, that's great, but there's different people in your life through college and work and maybe outside of your professional life. There's someone that you look up to for a reason. What do you really respect about them? Is it how they are in their life? Is it the results they gotten in their life? Is it how they took you under their wing and nurtured you and guided you along the way? Is it how they instructed you and taught you along the way the details and the step-by-step of, hey, this is how you start your first job. This is what you need to focus on, or in a financial setting, maybe it was, hey, this is how you buy your first investment and how you need to watch this and do this. And totally shifts your perspective. Look at who you really respect and look up to in your life. And I'm sure there's different people in each age of your life, different sections from professional to financial to fun to sports. I want you to look at the people that really inspire you. What inspires you about them? Look hard of that because it's gonna tell you what you are aspiring to and what drives you. The other aspect is who irritates the heck out of you. Who can you not stand? Who irritates you by how they talk, by how they walk, how they work, how they explain things. I want you to look deep at who irritates you. What irritates you about them? Write it down. It's just as important to know who inspires you and who annoys you. Because these are little tricks of figuring out what works and doesn't work in your life. And it's important. The people that irritated me were most of the time opposites of me. And those are the type of people that I needed to work harder at understanding, relating to, because in a professional setting, and even just being nice to people on the street, it's pretty important to understand why that person or personality brings the beast out in you. Why they irritate you, why you struggle with it. That's something that you need to strengthen yourself on, and you need to figure out why. So these are the things I want you to think about and pay attention to as we go through the process of getting you to understand yourself and your strengths. Because once you understand what traits the people you aspire to, and the traits that irritate you, it could be your starting place with what irritates you and others to what you're aspiring to is where you're going. And knowing your strengths and weaknesses and your personality is very important in this whole pathway. Okay. I have a theory and I want to try and explain it. I feel like personalities are so uniquely us. We have the simple breakdown that I created, the personality code is very basic. So think of this about languages like Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch. Think about these foreign languages. I'm American, I'm English. I want you to think about each personality. So the direct personality could be German. German. I'm a German descent. My ancestors are all German. So if you hear someone from Germany speaking, they're very direct, very blunt, they almost sound angry. They're very just forceful. So it almost sets you back if you don't know that they're just saying, hey, it's a beautiful sunshiny day, but they're so intense, it's hard for you to really understand what they're saying. So think of the fun, loving personality as French. French is very beautiful, flowing. It is a almost a happy upbeat sound whenever you hear it. I have no comprehension of German or French, but I've seen movies where they're speaking French. It's just more of a sing-songy kind of a beautiful language. So think about a direct and a fun-loving personality. You have a German and you have French. There's no overlapping from the German dialect to the French dialect. To me, they sound totally different. They don't have any similarities with anything, with the spelling, with the sounds, with the enunciations, nothing. So think about a direct personality. Try to have a conversation with a fun-loving personality. If you've ever been around a fun-loving personality, this direct person, it will be a clash. We'll just say it's a clash. And it's no fault of either one. They are who they are. But unless you take the time to understand why the German is the way he is and the French is the way they are, there's going to be could be a clash. And this is the same thing with the personalities. If you don't understand where the fun loving is coming from, they could annoy you, they could irritate you, they could be a little too much. And the same with the direct personality to the fun loving. The fun loving comes up to a direct person and they feel they could feel like they're being judged and they're too strict and that they're putting them down, and there's just no compatibility between there. So think about it in your life. If you are the direct personality and you've never been around a fun-loving personality, if your mom or dad or siblings were not this personality, they could be totally foreign to you. And understanding your traits and knowing the other person's traits, you're going to be able to understand things a little bit better. That what irritates you might not irritate you as much, knowing that this is who they are. This is how they speak, this is how they act, this is how they handle situations sometimes. So think about it as how you communicate with each other. It's totally different. And if you don't understand how to be relatable to each other, it's harsh. So think about a coworker that you've that you've worked with before and you've just clashed because you were speaking different languages. This is what I want you to understand why the personality code is really important. Because the first thing is decoding yourself, understanding yourself inside and out. What characteristics are you doing? How do you talk to people? How do you approach situations? How are you communicating? And how are you gearing yourself towards someone else? Is it always all about you and how you talk to things? Or do you know that you need to lower your tone a little bit and put on a smile because the direct personality is not always the best at smiling and being relatable and looking nice? We have the rustic B face a lot of the times, just because there's a million things that are on our mind about doing things, and that's where you go. Where the fun loving is more focused on fun and upbeat and happy. So they always have a bounce in their step and a smile on their face, and they're just enjoying life. These are the people that can irritate you or you love them because they thrive on being happy. They enjoy the rainbows and the sunshine or a falling leaf or the dandelions in the yard. So these are all different languages. So think about the direct and the rule maker. The rule maker to me is more like, and I'm sorry, I'm switching up the languages just to be a little bit more relatable. But think about the direct and the rule maker. They both like details and tasks and doing getting things accomplished. But they are different ways. So think Spanish and Italian. There's some similarities there. They have the same sound of the same words, and the dialect is a little bit similar-ish. I don't speak either language. I learned Spanish in high school, roughly. But you have to understand whenever you see Italian words, Spanish words are similar. They might not be pronounced exactly the same, but you can also, they're relatable. You understand certain ways of doing things a little bit easier. So you have to understand these are the personalities, just like the languages that are a little bit more similar, you're going to relate to them a little bit more. So those little small differences aren't as dramatic. So you can flow with them a little bit better. There's little things that you're like, what? But you figure it out because they are similar. It's a lot easier to relate to them. And it also helps if you have a family member or a friend that you grew up that up with, you've been around, that have those personalities. You have a natural weight knowing how to relate to them. And then you have the study. The study is the easy-going, more of like the British. The British to English. Very similar, very laid back. It's very similar to English, but you have different words and you have different ways of doing things. The British are a little bit more laid back and a little bit more. So think about the four personalities as different speaking languages. And you have to break them down so that you can understand them. But you think about it. Our mom and our dads are certain personalities. We're a certain personality, and our siblings are a different personality. So you've been exposed to a lot of them. But even as an adult, you can learn the personality code and look back to how your parents were. And the things that used to irritate you the most about your parent compared to your personality could be easily explained by looking at their traits or their weaknesses. And you could understand why you felt like you had to pick up the slack a certain way here, or why they were a little bit more brash about certain things. This is all about how to break down information about people and how to make it more approachable, more understanding. Because for me, it took me from being angry and frustrated with so many people to being able to be more calm, introspective, more relatable, understanding. It was like, oh, they're not trying to irritate me. They're not trying to frustrate me. This is who they are, this is the language they speak. And it's my job to understand how they are. Now, this used to be a natural thing when I was growing up that most people had to be polite and understanding. And we knew how to have conversations and knew how to bring out some of the information that we just take for granted now. We don't have that full grasp of how to really have a conversation with everyone else. We are a little bit more triggered these days, where if they don't think and act the same about a lot of different things, we've almost been trained to get irritated by them, to fight them that they need to think the same that we think. Fight them to think the same way we think. That's not how the real world works. That's not why we're supposed to be doing this. We are supposed to understand the magic that is in everyone and how to respond, how to be relatable, how to get the most out of our experience. And by understanding the different languages that we all speak, a lot of things will come easier. You're not going to be as frustrated with people. You're going to be able to have more general conversations and you'll be able to learn things from the people that you don't naturally have a conversation with. You don't understand how to get more in depth to them because you're going to hopefully figure out that these people have something that you need to learn. You just have to learn how to work at it a different way than how it comes naturally to you. And I will tell you that just because you're working on yourself does not mean anyone else has to work on themselves. This is something that is a personal journey. It's great if you have friends and coworkers and family members that jump on the bandwagon and start understanding each other. It's actually amazing whenever you have someone who wants to do this journey with you. But you have to understand. You are going to be changing your perspective, your behavior, your relatability to other people. And this is okay. Just because you're growing and changing doesn't mean everyone's going to welcome you. It's not going to be a joyous occasion for everyone. But because what your normal dynamic with someone has changed, they freak out a little bit. They don't know why you're changing and why you're acting different. I still have people that treat me the same way that I was in my 20s when I was more reactive to people. Because I didn't understand people. Everything was frustrating to me because I could not understand other people. I could not relate to them. I could not see that they were not trying to irritate the heck out of me because they were just not as motivated and hardworking and detail-oriented as I was. There's no fault of their own. They are who they are. It was me. This is why I've been on a journey for all these years to become better, to be able to be more relatable, to be understanding more, because it was important to me. Now, when you change, you need to understand that sometimes you're going to get some crap from some people because you're acting differently. They're going to treat you differently because you're changing and they won't really know why. It's because you're not the same person that they thought you were. They are not going to totally even understand that you're changing. I have gotten so much crap through the years because they don't understand where I'm coming from. I think a lot of people thought I became hoity-toity whenever I was working on myself because I wasn't so abrasive and I wasn't so reactive. I think they were thinking that I was judging them because I did not react the same. I wasn't judging them. It was my own personal journey. But because they couldn't understand me anymore, I wasn't the same person I was when they first met me. I got a lot of crap from it, a lot of judgment. So just be ready for getting a little bit of crap from people as you grow and change. Change isn't always easy for yourself, but it's not always easy for the people around you. Don't let it stop you. Keep going because you are going to become the best version of yourself. Talk to you later.
