Inside Out Mamas

What Do You Want This Summer?

Brittany Turley Coaching Episode 20
Brittany:

Hey mama. Welcome to the Inside Out Mamas podcast. I'm Brittany Turley, mom of six, and I know what it's like to feel stuck and overwhelmed trying to be the perfect mom, but everything changed for me when I learned that small changes on the inside can bring big results on the outside. Each week I will share simple, yet powerful inside shifts or outside tips that can transform your approach to mothering, helping you thrive from the inside out. Ready to ditch the mom guilt and enjoy this season of life. You are in the right place. I don't know about you mamas, but here where I'm at, this is the last week of school and summer starts this Friday at noon. And so I'm thinking a lot about summer and what do I want this summer to look like. And one thing that I know helps is to prep my insides for summer to get my feelings and my thoughts aligned with what I really want this summer. Now, to do that, the first thing we need to know is what do we want this summer? Want is an interesting word as a verb. The word want means to desire or wish for something, but as a noun. The word want refers to the lack of something. I think often when we are thinking about things we want, we are using the noun form of the word want. We are thinking of the things that we don't have, we are thinking in a space of lack. But what if we could want from a place of abundance, would that change what we want? Or would that change the outcomes of our wants? Would we actually get what we wanted if we were coming from a place of abundance? My mentor, Brooke Castillo says Most of us have only allowed ourselves to want from a place of scarcity, so every time we've wanted something or dreamed about something, it's because we feel a lack of it. When we start dreaming about it, it actually causes us pain. People stop dreaming because they don't want that contrast. They don't want to think about what they want versus what they have. I just found that so interesting when I first heard that from her, how true that really is. We usually want from a place of scarcity, so we don't really want to want anything because it causes a little bit of pain because it's something we feel we don't have, we don't want to think about it because we don't have it yet. To help overcome this, my mentor uses an exercise where you write down 25 things that you want. However, there's a catch. Every other thing on that list has to be something that you really want. But you already have. Have you ever thought about the things you want and already have? It is an amazing exercise. When I did this the first time, it was actually a little hard at first to get my brain thinking about it in that way of wanting something that I already hadn. And so it was really hard to come up with these things that I wanted and already had. But once I got started, it was so fun to see all the things that I have wanted or still want, but already do have. Brooke says, most of us don't spend time wanting what we have. We don't think of wanting from a place of abundance to want the things you already have is different than just being grateful for those things. It's a different kind of energy and that I have found to be so true. I do believe that gratitude has amazing energy, and it's something that I practice daily, but wanting from a place of abundance, wanting what you. Already have is even a different energy than being grateful. And so what she has you do is create this list of things you want, but already have. And then things that you want but don't yet have. And. The idea is that you are sandwiching things that you want but don't yet have with the energy of things you want, but already have. And that way, as you're thinking about all of the things you want, the ones you have when you don't have, you're coming from a place of abundance and it really creates a different energy in your life and a different energy as you then create goals for those wants or start working towards those wants. The definition of want as a verb, which is an action word, is a desire or wish for something. So if we are wanting from a place of abundance, from a place of a verb, then we need to be taking some action and have some energy behind it if we're wanting from a place of a noun. Which refers to the lack of something, then we're, we're not doing anything. It's just a thing. It feels very strange the first time you start trying to do the mental work to think of things you want, but already have. But as you get going, it becomes more natural and you start realizing all of the things that you want, but have. Let me give you a few examples from my first time with a list like this to give you some ideas and get your ideas flowing. One of the things I wanted and have is to be married to my best friend. I knew whoever I wanted to marry. I wanted it to be somebody I was good friends with. Another thing that I want and have is I knew I wanted kids. Another thing that I knew I wanted that I have is a college degree. I knew I wanted to go to college. I love learning, and I wanted to get a degree in elementary education, and I did. Now in between those things are things that I. Didn't yet have but wanted. And it's so interesting to go back to this list now because one of those things on that list was to have a podcast. I made this list I think two years ago, and it's so fun now to go back and read it and see how my wanting from a place of abundance has created these things in my life along with my action and my hard work. Now because I believe small changes on the inside bring big results on the outside. Each week on my podcast, I'm going to give you a small change challenge, something small that you could do throughout the week if you choose, that could end up bringing big results to your life. So the small change challenge for this week is to make a list of nine things you want this summer. Now they don't just have to be things. A lot of the ones I gave you were things that you would achieve or do or have. But they can also be emotions you want to create or thoughts you want to create or, relationships you want to develop. So as you're making your list of nine things, the odd number, things will be things you want but already have. So number one will be something you want, but you already have the even number things will be things that you want to create or achieve this summer. So number two will be something you want and you have a desire for, but it's not something that you have quite yet. And doing it this way, starting with. Something you want but already have as number one. And only putting nine creates a sandwich for everything. That means that the first thing on the list is something you want and already have, and the bottom thing on the list is something you want and every already have. So you will end up with. Five things you want and already have, and four things that you want to create and achieve this summer. And from that energy that you have of wanting what you already have, you'll begin to create the energy you need to achieve the other wants that you don't yet have. I went ahead and made a list for my summer this year, and just to give you a few examples to help you get your list going. Some things that you might want but already have could be to be home with my kids this summer. It could be to have an air conditioned home to escape to on hot summer days. It could be to have a sprinkler in your backyard for your kids to run through when it's hot and they're bored. They can be big, they can be small. Creating this list helps prepare our minds for an amazing summer because we will see the abundance of what we already have, and that will give us the energy and the drive to create the things that we are wanting to this summer and make our summers with our kids amazing this year.
