Inside Out Mamas

Summer Series Part 1: Emotions

Brittany Turley Coaching Episode 22
Brittany:

Hey mama. Welcome to the Inside Out Mamas podcast. I'm Brittany Turley, mom of six, and I know what it's like to feel stuck and overwhelmed trying to be the perfect mom, but everything changed for me when I learned that small changes on the inside can bring big results on the outside. Each week I will share simple, yet powerful inside shifts or outside tips that can transform your approach to mothering, helping you thrive from the inside out. Ready to ditch the mom guilt and enjoy this season of life. You are in the right place. This summer on the podcast, I'm gonna do something a little different. I've created a summer series on emotions. Emotions are so important and they. Dictate so much of what we do in our lives, and yet we don't understand them very well. So I have a 10 part series each one's going to be very small because I know you wanna be out enjoying these summer days with your kids. Each week we'll build upon the last week and we will just incrementally dive into emotions where they come from, their purpose, recognizing, identifying them, how to allow them, how to release them, emotional maturity, how to create emotions on purpose, and more. I hope you'll join me. We're gonna start with the basics today, and we're gonna start with what are emotions. There are a lot of things on the internet and in books that you can learn about emotions, and lots of people have different viewpoints and ideas about emotions, and I'm not claiming to know everything, but I'm going to share the definition that has helped me the most, and that is that emotions are the body's reaction to the brain's interpretation of something. In other words, our emotions come from our thoughts. Some people use the words, emotions and feelings interchangeably, and sometimes I probably do that too. But for me, the best definition for feelings is they are the label or the name that you give an emotional experience. So anger, joy, overwhelm, or peace, those would all be. Feelings, whereas the emotions is my body's reaction. So when I feel sad, often I will cry or I might tremble, or I might feel cold. When I feel overwhelmed, my emotional reaction would be to feel pressure in my head, tightness in my chest, maybe even like sweaty palms. So for the rest of the series, we're gonna try and stick to these definitions where emotions are, how your body is reacting to your thoughts and feelings are the label or name. You give those emotional experiences, but sometimes I'm gonna probably slip up and interchange them both. Another good way to define emotions is vibrations in our body. Our body is full of energy and different emotions have been studied and shown to create different levels of energy. A lot of the emotions that are considered negative, like. The ones we don't enjoy feeling anger or sadness have been studied to give low vibrations, whereas ones like love have been studied and shown to give really high energy output. While we're talking about emotions, it's important to not confuse emotions with involuntary sensations. our emotions come from our thoughts, but sensations are more like hunger, cold, thirst, sickness, tired. These are all physical sensations, whereas emotions would be more like frustrated, lonely, bored. Agitated. A really helpful way to distinguish between these two. Um, was shared by my mentor Brooke Castillo, and she said, emotions start in the brain and travel to the body, but sensations start in the body and travel to the brain. If you think about hunger. Usually we feel the sensation of hunger in our body. We feel it in our stomach, and then that sends a signal to our brain, Hey, we're hungry. You need to go get us some food. So just to wrap things up, emotions are our body's reaction to our thoughts. Feelings are the label or name that we give those emotions. If you enjoyed this little episode or any of my other ones, be sure to share it with another mama and be sure to come back next week where we will dive into how emotions happen.
