Hey mama, welcome back to the Moms Who Mean Business podcastāwhere we ditch the hustle, build a business that runs in the background of life, and make room for both success and snuggles.
Todayās episode is one thatās been on my heart for a whileābecause itās something Iāve personally walked through. And if youāve ever found yourself spiraling down the comparison rabbit holeāwondering if youāre doing enough, growing fast enough, or sounding too much like everyone elseāthen this oneās for you.
I want to talk about owning your power and putting your blinders onābecause hereās the truth: when youāre constantly looking side to side, itās almost impossible to move forward.
Iām going to share the behind-the-scenes of what this has looked like in my own business journeyāhow I lost my voice for a bit, how I found it again, and what I do now to stay focused, aligned, and magnetic to the people Iām called to serve.
So grab your coffee, put in those earbuds, and letās get into it.
Okay, letās talk about something that sneaks up on all of us⦠even if weāre confident, even if weāve been in business for years.
The dreaded comparison trap.
And I want to get super honest with you about how I fell into it recentlyābecause I didnāt even realize it was happening at first.
It started really innocently. I was scrollingālooking for a little inspo, just analyzing content, checking out trends⦠and then it happened.
I started seeing this wave of messaging from other creatorsāspecifically around this whole ābe the authorityā movement. Which, okay, I get.
But then came the posts that were kind of⦠low-key criticizing the āBFF energyā that a lot of us bring to our brands.
And Iāll be real with youāI took it personally.
These werenāt just random voices on the internet. These were women I deeply admire. Women Iāve followed for years. Women Iāve learned from.
And their content? It rubbed me the wrong way.
Now listenāI donāt think for a second their intention was to discourage or shame anyone. Not at all. Their message did what it was supposed to do: it made me reflect.
But that reflection? It spiraled.
I started thinking⦠Wait, am I doing it wrong? Am I showing up too soft? Too friendly? Am I being taken seriously?
And that line of questioning? Thatās where the danger lies.
Because I pride myself on my golden retriever energy.
I like that people feel comfortable around me. I want my audience to feel like theyāre grabbing coffee with their biz bestieānot bowing at the feet of some intimidating, unapproachable expert. Thatās just not me.
I donāt want to be on a pedestal. I want to be on Zoom in my get-sh*t-done mom bun, sipping lukewarm coffee, helping another mama make money moves in her business.
Because Instagram? Itās a highlight reel.
My feed might be polishedābut my energy? Itās real.
I want you to feel that when you watch my Stories or listen to this podcast. I want you to feel welcomed, seen, and like you belong here.
But in this moment⦠I started questioning if that was wrong.
And yāallāI hated that. Because Iām not someone who usually doubts herself. Iāve been in this space for over 7 years. I know what Iām doing. I know the backend, the systems, the strategy, the automationāIāve helped six and seven figure entrepreneurs grow businesses that run with ease.
But this moment⦠it caught me off guard.
And I found myself spiraling.
I literally thought, Am I too friendly? Too approachable?
Like what!? Iām a natural golden retriever with a severe case of RBF! Thatās why Iām so warm and bubblyāitās my defense mechanism!
But the bigger realization was this:
I can disagree with someoneās strategy and still respect them.
I can honor someone elseās path and still stay rooted in my own.
And the real issue here wasnāt even the messaging. It was that I let it make me question my core. My style. My way of leading and coaching and connecting.
And if that could happen to meāa confident, experienced, been-there-done-that businesswomanā¦
Then girl, it can happen to anyone.
So this episode? This is your reminder to put your blinders on.
Because itās so easy to get lost in the scroll, to start shrinking, tweaking, second-guessing⦠and suddenly feel behind, off-brand, or even invisible.
But youāre not behind. Youāre not off-track.
You just got distracted.
And what brought me back to center was this truth:
The very thing that makes you different⦠is the exact thing that makes you magnetic.
So if or when you find yourself spiraling like I did, just knowā
- You are absolutely not alone.
- It happens to the best of us.
- Your power? Itās in being fully you.
So letās talk about how to protect your energy⦠while still moving forwardāhead down, blinders on⦠quite literally.
So hereās what happened nextā¦
I found myself unfollowing a lot of people in my industry.
Not because I donāt respect them. Not because Iām trying to be shady. But because I donāt need to know what Sally Weatherwax is doing with her coaching business.
Like⦠I love you, Sally. I support you. I wish you all the sales and a fully booked calendar. But I cannot keep showing up as the most aligned, authentic version of me if Iām constantly watching how everyone else is showing up.
Because the truth isāI donāt want to be the coach who hops on and off every trend train.
I donāt want to beat the āauthorityā drum just because everyone else is beating the authority drum.
And just for the recordāauthority isnāt a trend.
Itās not a content style or a tone of voice.
Itās something you embody.
But the way itās being shoved in everyoneās face right now? Yeah⦠thatās the trend. And thatās what Iām not about.
So hereās what I want you to hear if youāre feeling stuck, confused, or overwhelmed by what other people in your industry are doingā¦
Mute the noise. Unfollow with love. Protect your peace.
Especially if you already have a coach or mentor. Like helloāthatās your compass. Thatās who youāre learning from, growing with, building alongside. You donāt need 14 voices in your head.
And when youāre trying to create content, serve your people, or grow your businessātoo much input kills clarity.
You have to get solid in:
Your message
Your voice
And your intellectual property (aka your zone of freakinā genius)
And if somethingās not landing? Run it by your mentor!
Not the algorithm. Not the masses. Not the girl in your niche with 10k more followers.
Because hereās the thingāwhen you start creating from that place of ācomparison-mode,ā your content becomes a patchwork of borrowed voices.
You start sounding like someone else⦠who isnāt even speaking to your ideal client.
And what happens next?
Your message starts to fall flat.
You start to blend in.
You start to doubt your magic.
And thatās the opposite of what you started this business for, right? You didnāt leave your job, step into entrepreneurship, and build something from scratch just to sound like everybody else.
So I really want you to remember this line. Write it down. Make it your lock screen if you have to:
When youāre looking side to side, itās almost impossible to move forward.
Thatās how this trap keeps so many talented entrepreneurs stuck.
Theyāre not lacking skill.
Theyāre not lacking strategy.
Theyāre just distracted.
Here's what it actually means to put your blinders on...
And just to be clearāitās not about ignoring the world.
Itās about honoring your lane. Your mission. Your voice.
Because when your energy is scattered and your attention is split between what everyone else is doing, it becomes really hard to stay grounded in who you are and what youāre building.
So hereās how I bring myself backāand how you can too:
Step 1: Define your vision⦠again.
Seriously. Revisit it.
Get clear on your mission.
Get re-grounded in who you serve and why youāre doing this.
Reconnect with your values.
Because when the scroll gets noisy, the vision can get foggy.
And if your messaging starts to feel off or youāre second-guessing what to say⦠this is the first place to start.
Personally, when Iām feeling off, I go back to my āideal clientā exerciseāand I even created a workshop around this called Captivate & Convert. Itās a game-changer, and it will snap you and your business back into alignment and put those blinders on fast.
But however you do itāthis is your step one.
Step 2: Mute and unfollow strategically.
And noāthis isnāt petty. Itās powerful.
You can love someoneās content and still need space from it.
For example, I have a folder saved on Instagram called ācreators I love.ā Iāve unfollowed a lot of themānot because I donāt value themābut because I donāt want to be distracted. I donāt want my creativity to be influenced by what theyāre doing.
But if I ever want a dose of inspo, I go into that folder and check ināon my terms.
So if someoneās content makes you feel less-than or makes you start to question your vibe? You have permission to hit that mute or unfollow button.
Protect your peace. Protect your process.
Step 3: Create before you consume.
This one? Huge.
Before you start scrolling, before you open the āGram, before you check your feedācreate something.
Write your post. Record your Story. Brain dump your thoughts.
Create in your own energy.
Because when you start your day consuming other peopleās voices, itās easy to unintentionally mimic their tone, style, or message.
But when you create from your own heart, your own truth, your own energy? Thatās when your content connects.
Thatās when it sounds like YOU.
And thatās what your people need.
Iāll leave you with two mantras I say to myself often when Iām feeling the pull to compare:
āI donāt need to be louder. I just need to be aligned.ā
āMy people are waiting for MEānot a version of someone else.ā
You donāt have to out-hustle or out-post anyone. You just have to keep showing up as YOU.
Thatās what builds trust. Thatās what creates connection.
And thatās what makes you magnetic to the people youāre meant to serve.
So...
I disconnected⦠probably for about a week. Which I usually show up on stories but even that I didnāt really do.
It was spring break and I juggled my service based business for years that this was the first spring break I just really dove into home - ya know?
Not to say I didnāt interact on the backend of my business or inside of my community - thatās like my happy place. Iām just talking about socials and outside influence.
I donāt think I even listened to anyoneās podcast⦠I didnāt consume. Letās say that!
I reflected. I didnāt consume.
I wrote and journaled - a lot.
If it came to mind I wrote it down. Some of it was productive and business and some of it was just mental clutter.
I allowed myself to acknowledge all of the thoughts and feelings I had, even if they were ego driven or inflated and untrue. And then I went through them... were they ultimately true??
And a lot of them weren't. I realized that a lot of what other business owners and coaches do - doesn't resonate with me. and that's ok!
So here's what I want you to take away from this.
There is no one who can do what you do, the way you do it.
Some people like wendys, some people like mcdonalds - some people like freddys, and some people like 5guys... and they all ....make ......burgers.
No one is you, and that is your super power. You will attract YOUR people. YOUR people are looking for you, just the way you do it.
So stop the comparisonitis, put up your blinders, and open your heart mama.
So if this resonated with you, like always, I have a few action steps on how you can keep the momentum going. Because consuming is great, integrating is better, but taking action is where it's at.
