I down I remember back in the day having to download the beta of Minecraft because it'd just come out, and when you it was so weird because the map generation was all cooked, so we like the first world I ever loaded into was a section of like 20 by 20 size blocks of islands in an infinite ocean, and there was like a hundred thousand islands around me, and it was just a bunch of islands, and I remember skeletons, they would they just defeated me. I couldn't figure it out. Mind you, I was I was young. How old were you?

They they were both like, Do you just leave this in the back of your car? And I was like, Yeah, man, like it's been in there for about a year. I'm not really too fussed about it. The next day, Jack calls me up after he leaves, and he's like, Yo, you're lucky. I was gonna steal your toolbox and make you think that like someone stole it the next morning. My toolbox got stolen. Oh my god. I was like, You had to say something, yeah. You just had to say something. So he owes you tools. He, yeah, that's right. He owes me about three grand's worth of tools. So despite all of this, what has reignited your love for it was just more like because I love commercial vinyl, I love like m going more on commercial sites um because it's yes, it's a little bit more finicky when it comes to like JHAs and all the safety precautions and all that type of stuff. Sure, that's fine. But when you get started, you're kind of just in your element. So when I went down, um I had to do my induction, like the site induction and all that type of stuff, which took half a day. And then like from there, it was kind of just had my my headphones in like the whole time and just went. And it was I didn't realise how much I missed commercial vinyl because it's way less of a head fuck. I don't have to go into someone's house and move so much furniture just to pull a little bit up and then move the furniture back and then pull a little section up. So the amount that I got done in that first week I made essentially double than what I would make in town. Wow. Um, so one, there's more money, and two, it's just so much nicer to work with. Like they're big 1.8 meter wide rolls by 25 meter rolls. So like you actually have to use your brain with like measuring, and you have to like uh measure sections, um, and they're all drops and they all weld together as well with um like weld rod. So there's a lot more in it, and it's a lot more brain power that you have to think about it. And when you do a good job, bro, I was walking around my section like hell yeah, this is like satisfying. Yeah, I love this. So it was it was uh one of those things, and it kind of made me think like because I I I didn't hate my job, I just didn't want to do it. Right. I'll I like I would I would go to do it and I would still like like some aspects, but um after doing this, it kind of made me realize like how many people actually like don't like their job? Like, what are the statistics of like how many people just go to work in like a in a mind-numbing state?

The amount of tradies you meet, then you're like, oh man, how long have you been in this? Oh, 15 years? Damn, you must love it. I hate every minute, just yeah. What else can I do? That's always the same answer. I was like, you know, committed now.

It also like office workers. I can't imagine a single person that works like a sales job or a customer service job in an office loves that job.

Well, talking about that, I before I was uh I did my trade, I was the store manager at Harvey Norman here. And for the first like year or two, I loved it. It was more like I loved helping people, I loved like talking to people, getting the it just it literally got to a point where I was like in a in a mind-numbing state. And then if a customer came in, it was just like, Well, you done this and you done this, bro. I was so close to knocking people out. So I was like, I have to leave before I either say something that I shouldn't or do something to end more on like good terms than anything. Um and yeah, then I went into the trades, and then it just got to a point like when you do a job for so long, you like you just go into um like autopilot, and you're just like, Oh yeah, cool, I need to do this, I need to do this, and you're not really thinking about anything. But when you actually have to actively think about doing something, then you're like, Oh, cool, this is fun, this is awesome. Like, that's why I like doing um like custom patterns because you have to think about like everything. Um but I was doing um some research and it turns out that 20% of employees are engaged, so they enjoy going to work, they enjoy doing the things, but then 64% are not engaged.

Like the number one saying you hear in the trades is here for the income, not the outcome. That's it. Show up for money, especially on mind sites. It's here to make some money, leave. That's just how it is. That's why safety's such a big thing because everyone there's just kind of just brain dead, just coasting along.

Yeah, it's rough, and I think that's why like we are so passionate about doing this, because if we can make like if we can take you out of like that that brain numbing state to listen to us and laugh while you're working, kind of makes it a little bit easier. Um so yeah, it was it was and also the other thing as well, when I was on the site, like I'm I was so used to going on construction sites and people talking to each other like they were yarning, cracking jokes, like all different trades, like even though we pull the piss out of all the trades, every trade, every trade that I've met that has been in a in a different field all love the banter. They all say, like, well, what we're doing is fun, it's cool, it's it's funny. Um, this site, everyone had headphones in, and it's like you would take your headphones out, and it was just like all you could hear was like drills going off or like whatever, no, no talking. Yeah, and I was like, this feels weird. That'd be so wrong. Yeah, it felt very weird, and even like there was this well, there was one dude, I don't know if he was on gear or not. Was he on the roof? He was an electrician, though. No, it was a it was a little bit of a different uh dynamic. So I was like, I thought you guys are gay, but you're not, you're kind of just jaw swinging. But he would like, I was I was prepping this whole area and he came through. I had my headphones in, didn't even make eye contact. He like walks through and he goes, Yo, what's going on, boss? What's going on? And then like no one answered him because we didn't like hear him. And then he like walks up to me and goes, Yo, hey girl, right? Hey girl. I'm like, what the fuck? What what's going on right now? Um, but then yeah, pretty much everyone else was just like headphones in, like dialed in, just doing their thing, and then would leave at the end of the day. That's so sad though. It it is very sad, so sad. Like it when I got there, um Jack was was by himself, so I kind of understand that. But then I kind of made the effort to like every now and again just go over to him and like yarn with him for a little bit and talk shit, and by by the end of it, like we were talking a lot and cracking jokes and like all that type of shit.

So it was it was nice, but yeah, I'm used to an environment where it's like there's at the current workshop, there's two sides, and there is a rather large speakers on each side, and I'm talking like if one side the speaker turns off, it is still loud enough from the other side, which is like 50 meters away. Like there's just tunes pumping all the time, everyone's just chatting with everyone, everyone's working together. That's how it should be.

Well, the thing is, is like if so, if I I've I've said this for ages, like because I've been working for myself and by myself for so long, having headphones in is a completely different vibe to having the radio on and blasting the music through that, like even by yourself, it's such a different vibe.

Uh the weirdest vibe change I've ever felt was having airpods in that have noise cancelling and then earmuffs on top.

I'd be grinding away on this because I had to make the bunch of these brackets up. I can't remember exactly what I was doing, but I need to do heaps of grinding and cutting. And I was going along and I was like, I can't even hear the grinder right now. Yeah, I was like, this is so dangerous. Yeah. Oh, that's right. I was I had to make shims for like spacing out the pins on you know, excavators and stuff, and I had to make like a hundred of these things in different sizes, grinding oxy cutting everything, just nothing, absolutely nothing.

Yeah, just it's a weird thing, man. It it's such a weird thing, and to also think like when you go in on sites, um like eight out of ten people don't want to be there. Eight out of ten people.

Yeah, we're going back to plant equipment, and yeah, so I've got offers and I'm gonna be heading out to site to go more into plant again, thankfully. Yeah, which is big loaders and excavators who don't know what plant.

Yeah, so then like it's just a change of well, uh, this is road transport trailers, and you know, you name it. Whereas I want to go back to mobile plant, which is all your loaders and hydraulics and excavators and pins and bushes and things like that. Tracks and you name it.

Like switch up there is crazy. Yeah. Um, well, for me, I left an office job in 2019 with the premise of I'm going freelance, I want to work for myself, I don't want to work for the corporate machine. Because for me, it was just working corporate, you're a number. Yep. And I hated the whole hierarchy of a like a corporation where you've got managers and they've got managers and targets, and like, yeah, the money was great. I did it for years, and that's why people do those jobs, because you you have security. Whereas being a freelancer, I'll have months where I make no money and months where I make a lot of money and up and down. And but also like I've worked in different industries, like working in the music industry, which was like a dream to begin with, because I'm going to all these live shows, which I really enjoy, and I get to travel a lot. But after a year or two, you know, it it the excitement kind of faded away, and I was like, this isn't for me, like kind of feeling like what you guys are talking about, where it was just like I'm not happy in this industry. But for me as a creative, I can I just want to change my industry. I don't I want to stop working for music artists and I want to work for like, yeah, it's a money cut or whatever, but at least I'm working for more like real people, people I get on with, working with smaller businesses and and stuff. Um, so yeah, that that was working an office job. I knew I made a very conscious decision. I'm gonna save up as much money as I can now, like over the course of the next year. And then in 2019, I'm I'm never working for someone again. And I've done little jobs, I picked up little retail jobs here or there just to like part-time. Like, I'm not beyond pick stacking shelves and coals three days a week if I need to, but three. Um, but yeah, that was a big thing for me. Like, I needed to go freelance. Work life balance is more important to me than money. 100%.

And that's the thing that I think a lot of people have lost is like they think, and I've met a few people that are just like, oh yeah, I go to work to live. What does that mean? Break that down for me. So they're like, they would rather be miserable and sad and go to work just to make the money that they want to make, rather than lose a little bit of money and like have that pay cut, I guess, to have that little bit more freedom.

Where you go, you do something mind-numbing and miserable for eight hours a day, and then in your free time, you never talk. You want to buy something, you can buy. You want to buy a car and get a loan, you can do all that. These are all the things that I can't do as a freelancer with the way that my money changes. But that's not that important to me. I would rather kind of have to cut back in my lifestyle, but in order to live the life that I want, if that makes sense. I would rather, you know, not be able to buy the fancy clothes that I want to buy than go slave eight hours a day at a job that I hate just so that I can buy a nice hoodie or whatever, you know.

Yeah, I remember that was a conversation I had at my job before I went and started as an apprentice. Because I was I was fresh out of school because I was 18 and I was on for what I was doing, I was making ridiculous money. I was on like 120 grand a year at 18, and I made lots of money, and I was like, even I said to them, I was like, it doesn't matter, they can pay me $10 an hour, I know that's what I'm gonna get. I'm still gonna go do that. I would rather do that than do this.

Yeah, and that's that's that that's passion, that's what you want to do. So it's like, if I could, if I could easily just stop doing my everyday work to do this, I would, like I've said before. So it's a little bit different on my end where I have to like I physically have to go out and do things, but I'm trying to make conscious decisions of how can I enjoy it more rather than going to an everyday bullshit same thing and yeah, just make it a little bit more enjoyable for me. And that if if that means that I have to go away for two weeks to what the fuck?
