Welcome to Off the Cuff, a community use of public facilities podcast, the show where we explore, discuss, and introduce you, our listeners, to the wonderful world of community use. I'm Emily Brewster McCarthy.
Derek RossAnd I am Derek Ross. Together, we are your host, and we are here to provide you with some of the most up-to-date news and information about Cuff. Emily, are you ready to get started? Absolutely, I'm ready to get started. Listo para Mambo? Oh, yeah, yeah. I'm ready to Mambo. Here we go, here we go. Emily, I think we're back. I think we're back. Are we back? I mean, the microphone is on the last time I checked. So we're back for another episode of Off the Cuff Community Use of Public Facilities. Hello, Emily.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyHi, how are you? I'm good.
Derek RossI'm good. Are we getting the highs and lows? Are we doing it? Are we doing it? Are we doing it? Okay, are you you you're starting right? Are you starting?
Emily Brewster-McCarthyUm, yeah, I can start.
Derek RossAll right, go
ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyMy high is that it's a little hotter today, which I'm enjoying.
Derek RossYes.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyUh part of my, let's take my low is I'm wearing a long sleeve short right now, so it's not the best right now for the studio. Yeah, I'm with you. I'm with you. Yeah. And the studio's a little hot with the lights and stuff. Because we are in the studio today. We are in the studio. Um and um, but my low, actually, I wanted to mention this. This is actually directed towards you, Derek. Oh, really? Well, oh my god. Oh my goodness. My low is that we had a staff retreat day. And I already know he's he already knows what I'm gonna say. We had a staff retreat day and we had planned for like weeks. We were like, we're gonna do painting, we're gonna do painting. The day before our retreat, he's like, actually, I'm not doing painting, I'm doing this other thing. And I was like, wow, wait, great. Thank you for ripping the carpet.
Derek RossOh my goodness. I wasn't too sure. I couldn't remember. The whole time, the whole time while you were painting, you were crying. The whole time.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyIt's my painting is done with tears.
Derek RossSo it's a sad painting. Sad, it's sad. It's that, oh my goodness. Is that your highs and your lows? Well, thank you for including me in that whole process of highs and lows. Uh, for me though, I I guess uh a low is I actually had a moment at home where I opened the door and I hit myself in the forehead. Isn't that something? Isn't that how this works? You just you're just being busy. That's what I'm saying. I'm we're busy. I'm busy at home, and I got so busy, I was working, and next thing I know, I opened the door and hit myself in the head. You know, that it happens, it happens, got a nice little scratch, but you know, that's that's a low for me. But you know what, Emily? A good high, and I would probably say, unlike your low that included me, our high together is a joint. You know, we have done so much together. We really have. We have, and we have been able to network with a lot of people, a lot of people. And today, while we're out and about, we were able to kind of meet with a fire chief and kind of chat with people.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyThat was awesome. Well, yeah.
Derek RossBecause we are once again, we are in the studio. We are in the studio. It feels good to be in the studio, it feels good to see so many people. You know, we we get a chance to work with Tebs and all of the wonderful individuals. And shout out to Tebs, of course. Shout out to Tebs. But again, we are working, we're getting back to this podcast off the cuff communities, public facilities. Just throw that in there, just like to slide that in there. But Emily, what are we talking about
today?
Emily Brewster-McCarthySo we're gonna talk a little bit about our work with uh Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center.
Derek RossOh, yes.
Emily Brewster-McCarthySo we have it's more like a story time where we're um kind of moving a little bit away from our typical uh and if you heard last episode, we were actually not in the studio either. We were in our office. So we're kind of trying something new. And in this, it's a little bit of a story time of what we've been up to in collaboration with Animal Services in the Adoption Center. Yes. So if you can give like a little bit of a brief overview of what we've done, like maybe um I know we started uh the collaboration in the fall.
Derek RossYes, we did. Yep
Emily Brewster-McCarthyAnd we just happened to like go there. I forgot what we were doing, but um, we got a full tour. There's some awesome staff. Awesome staff, awesome stuff. Um, they have a lot of stuff going on there. We were able to uh join them for an event that they had um a few months ago, which was awesome. Which is we kind of want to talk about that event um and uh everything that came along with it. And then, you know, we also want to promote uh you guys to go and adopt some animals. They're cute, they're clearly so cute right?
Derek RossYes, yes, yes. So it it's interesting because we're talking about animal adoption. And I think that event that the the last event was what? Mutt madness? Mutt madness. Mutt madness. And it was madness, yeah, it was madness, and we had a chance. I guess we were like what in between volunteering slash walking around. We had a chance to meet with some volunteers. We also got a chance to witness animals being adopted. Did you want to talk about that? Like, what? Like that is amazing.
Emily Brewster-McCarthySo, Derek, uh mentioning a little bit of volunteering, we walked around uh with some community members that were interested in some dogs,
and we followed one gentleman around, and he was very like, he wanted to go and visit this one dog, Linda Lou. Linda Lou. Linda Lou, a beautiful, beautiful dog, very friendly. Um, and then we found out that his mom was named Linda Liu. Yes and he was like, it was like a perfect match made in heaven. And um we were we, you know, went around and walked around a little more, and then by the time we finished, we saw that gentleman, same gentleman walking out with Linda Lou. And it was the most fulfilling, like it was an amazing, amazing uh moment. And I went and I ran and I was like, oh my goodness.
Derek RossI'm so glad you called it. I'm so glad. I'm so glad.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyYeah, it was such a sweet moment. Um and I'm really happy that we were able to get an opportunity to like witness things like that and also be a part of that because I don't know that a lot of people um know that you can just walk in and go in there and go get and sign up and register and and uh and adopt a
dog or a pet like the same day. I was thinking about it. Yeah. Think about it. And and honestly, like they have so many more events happening throughout the year that we'll make sure that we let you guys know about. But please go check out their website. Absolutely. Um and and they have so much more information. Um, but kind of bringing it back with Mutt Madness, one of the funny things that uh I was thinking about, so Mutt Madness, play on words of March Madness, right? Yep. And so they had like some of their flyers were like dogs with basketballs. And my first thought was like Airbud. Yeah, right. My first thought was like, wow, okay, so like dogs playing basketball. Of course, of course, of course, of course. That's a good connection to make, too. And I got taken back to when I said I was gonna dunk on you. Oh, yeah, immediately my brain went, oh, so we're gonna we're gonna have dogs dunking on Derek now.
Derek RossMatter of fact, we can go back to NMU's. And we're gonna play a one-on-one. No, I'm gonna give my five and you get your five. I'm gonna give my five, you get your five dogs, and we just play one-on-one. Like, we just get to have him go at it, like just play basketball. Just like your bud. I like that. I like, you know what? I think that that was a great moment for us because and if anybody's listening, I know y'all are listening because y'all are listening to Community Use of Public Facilities podcasts, of course. And you're gonna subscribe for us. Subscribe, why not? Because last time I checked, Emily, we are pretty cool. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're pretty cool. We're cool. I think so. I I think so. Yeah.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyI mean, I may be a little bit cooler than you, but listen, I feel like we have plenty of people that would disagree with you.
Derek RossOh, okay.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyOkay, but you know what? I'm gonna take it. I'm just gonna take it in stride. I'm gonna give you credit.
Derek RossThank you so much. Thank you so much. But yes, getting back to the topic ahead. We are talking about community use. We're talking about collaboration, we're talking about just being out in the community, which is a very strong suit. I think we're really good at that. I think that's what we do. We enjoy being out in the community, we enjoy challenges and opportunities to network with a lot of people. And this is kind of our our call. Like, if you know other departments, other organizations, other activities, other events, please let us know. Please reach out. We would get the information, we would put it more visible. We want people to reach out to us and let us know. Like, yeah, hey, you know what? Maybe Cuff should be at this event. Maybe off the cuff should be there. There are a lot of activities coming up really, really soon that we're getting a chance to be a part, what participate in. We're trying to keep it tight because we're trying to not tell you, but it's so exciting. This is so exciting, exciting times. But I guess we do need to talk about some cuff stuff, do we? Do we do we need to talk about it? A little bit. A little bit, a little bit. I think we need to. Once again, shout out to all of the people who staff. Uh, we also wanted to make sure, because we know staff is listening, and of course, our director Janelle is listening. Hey Janelle. Of course, we got to get back on cuff stuff. But what did we have recently?
Emily Brewster-McCarthyWe just had an opening day right now. We did have an opening day.
Derek RossWe did, we did, we did. I would probably say that if anybody gets a chance, our blogger, our blogger is being updated as we speak. We're trying to go through it, go through it, go through it. Same with our website. We're trying to get information up, we're trying to make it easily, you know, accessible. I think that's a key word. Making sure that it's what accommodating. Is that a good word to use? Can you use a good word to use? Okay, I I just want to make sure I don't want to just be using big words and just be like, I don't know if that's the right word. But the whole goal is that we're really, really working hard to make sure that a lot of things are being done, updated. Uh, the opening day reservation was May 4th. It was a very,
very good opening day reservation. We were making sure we go back, adjust things, do things. Shout out to the staff that made things happen when we were trying to make sure everything was getting adjusted and done. IT team. You know, I'm I'm just shot. We typically do shout-outs at the end, but I'm like, we don't throw this in because we just gonna be sitting here laughing and stuff like that. But we wanted to say thank you so much. Thank you so much. Emily, I also want to say thank you to you. Thank you to you. What did I do? Well, what did you do? What did you do? Well, one, we have been able to make ourselves available to do the podcast. Yeah, we've been making ourselves available also too with our roles in the county, other stuff. Yes, people who are listening, all of our listeners to off the cuff. We do other stuff in the county. We have roles. Uh, we work in communications, we work with other facilities and stuff like that. But right now is our opportunity to kind of collaborate and work with so many different people in the county, so many different communities, so many different sides, so many different areas, and it's very important. This there we've been doing a lot. So I want to say thank you.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyYeah, you know, and it goes right back to you. I want to give you your flowers too. You've been working really hard. We've been working really hard doing outreach, planning stuff. We have so many things lined up for you guys. The next couple of episodes are gonna be pretty jam-packed with information as well. We have a special episode coming up, and that's episode 25. 25.
Derek RossThank you. Thank you. That's all I was gonna say. Yeah, so what?
Emily Brewster-McCarthySo right now we're on 23. We are in 25. Uh, even though we've uh done two seasons now, yes, um, we do plan, and this is I'm gonna share with the audience. You'll share, you're gonna share. But we do plan on um probably wrapping season two on episode 25.
Derek RossOkay, okay.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyUm, and then we'll have a nice little special episode, which we're hoping to invite. Actually, we have her on the books already, but we're gonna we're gonna um invite our director. Um and she's gonna have a nice opportunity to do almost like a director's corner. We need to hear from her. Yes, yeah. And she's she's so incredible. We've kind of uh gatekeep her a little bit. A little bit, a little bit, a little bit. We've kept her for ourselves, I think, a little bit, uh, just because you know, I wanna we wanna enjoy uh everything that she has to offer. And and um now that you know it's been maybe like seven months-ish since they transitioned into the roles, like you know, we're we're doing this whole like branding thing. We're just we we have a lot of awesome, awesome things coming up for us. And I'm so excited for our listeners and the community to like see what's happening. Yes, um, and to be just as excited uh as we are about this uh change. Are you excited? I'm listening we all that was my favorite word, I think, at the beginning of the season. What I'm so excited. Excited, excited, yeah. Um so that's all Yiki's saying, yeah, I agree. I am very excited. Uh if you couldn't hear to my voice.
I hear it. I hear it.
Derek RossThat's what I'm saying.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyBut yeah, I obviously we're we have a lot of passion for what we do, right? Uh and we really love collaborating with the community and with our other partners in the county. Um, like Derek said, if anybody just wants to just vibe out with us um and just talk about what you guys are doing for the community and um just how you feel now. And if you're doing something feel good, uh, that is what we want. We want to bring people up, we want to get people to be excited about the things that are happening within the community. Absolutely. Um so yeah, I mean, I the only thing that I can say uh now is just like, and I'm gonna be kind of maybe gimmicky now, I'm gonna say it again. Okay. Okay, better like and subscribe. Of course. Because if you want to hear all the good vibe stuff, right? If you want to spend some time, some chill time, some easy listening, listening to some friends go back and forth, bickering, because that's what we do. Oh my goodness.
Derek RossOh my goodness. I mean, I mean we talk about other stuff.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyWe're like cartoon characters that go back and forth. But that's that I think that's kind of like the beauty of what we do. And I really hope that our audience uh gets that feeling from us, right? Yes, and we've heard uh we've we've heard feedback from a few other people, right? We have and uh we we hope that that translates uh because we are like that.
Derek RossLike we said, we're cool. Yeah, we're cool. We're cool. I think so. I think so. I don't know if my son may think I'm cool. I think I'm cool. I think when I walk out the door, I feel cool.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyI feel cool, but not not today though, right? Because you you hit your head. Yeah, not not today though. I was kind of embarrassed for myself.
Derek RossI was just sitting at home, like, how did I do that? How did I hit my head opening the door? Like, what's going on with me? What's happening? What's happening? See, see, that's what happens when you're working too much. You're working so much, you just disregard doors and you just walk out. Just run into doors. Just just it's just gonna move out the way. It will, it will. But once again, we we're we're we're community use of public facilities. We're gonna keep throwing it in there because we want people to understand that this is a uh off the cuff podcast, but we're
community use. So we're always talking about facilities, reservations, we're talking about Silver Springs Civic Building, we're talking about county government buildings and facilities. We're just going down the line. We're talking about Clarkburg Cottage, we're talking about Wheaton facilities, we're naming so many facilities. Of course, MCPS, Montgomery County Public School Facilities, indoor and outdoor. We gotta throw that in there. And so we were trying to make sure that everybody understands that a lot of the stuff we're talking about and how we're getting ready for our 25th episode. 25th, 25th. Wow, wow, wow. So as we continue to get ready and as we get ready to close out this podcast, we just want to make sure everybody understands that we're doing everything possible to get ourselves ready, keep ourselves ready, aligned, collaborating. We get more information that you can imagine about what we could be doing more of, what could have been done this way, that way, forwards and backwards. I think I'm thinking about a cartoon or something like that, watching with my son. But I think that right now we are just gonna keep continuing to give you something great on Off the Cuff podcast. Stay tuned because we have a lot, we got a lot to do. We got a lot to do. I don't, I don't, I, I mean, you we and we don't even say it no more. I mean, are you ready to mambo?
Emily Brewster-McCarthyI'm ready to mumbo.
Derek RossYeah, you wasn't expecting me to say that. Oh, these are ready. I'm ready. I'm ready, I'm ready. Because you uh we haven't said it in a while. I'm kind of disappointed that you haven't said it in a while.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyI didn't say it.
Derek RossYou didn't say it. Yeah, I I have we have not said it past.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyYou know what else we haven't done? And we can wrap up with this. What? We actually haven't high-fived each other. We haven't high fived each other. We shifted to fist bump because my hands were sweaty the last time. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know if my hands are sweaty now, but I'm gonna attempt to do a high five with you.
Derek RossOkay. All right, all right. You seem looking at the church. Yeah, we did that high five.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyThat was it was semi-dry.
Derek RossIt was, it was, it was. That was no sound effect. We just actually high five. We did that. We did that.
So, did you have any closings or shout-outs? I mean, we've been shouting out people, but is anything special Emily wants to say?
Emily Brewster-McCarthyYeah, so just a quick shout out to the staff uh that we work with over at Animal Services and Adoption Center. Tammy, she is, I believe she's the volunteer coordinator. She's awesome. Uh, hit her up, go volunteer, um, go adopt a pet. Uh, they have more than just dogs, they have cats, uh turtles, like uh hamsters, they have a whole bunch of other stuff. Maria, oh yeah, man, Maria, Maria over at um, I don't know if she's like the man. What Maria just holds such a special place in our heart. She has done so many good things. Uh, and even in the midst of all of these planning of these events, um, you know, kind of just showing up for the community and for the animals. And we're so appreciative of her. We are uh and the team over there. Um, and again, thank you so much for allowing us to join at that event. Yeah. Um, and thank you, Cuffstaff, absolutely for always, you know, seeing everything through and for really working hard for our community. Uh, and we're excited to keep talking to y'all about whatever we have to offer.
Derek RossYeah, yeah, yeah. I like that. I like you, you close that out strong. I feel like I I have nothing to say, but uh yeah, we we're we're gonna keep we're gonna keep grinding. Let's let's put it like that. You know what? We're gonna throw some terms in there. We we were just gonna keep on really, really working. We're gonna keep collaborating. We want to give a shout out to Tebs. We want to say thank you so much to so many departments that have been able to make this work. This has been, this is not just us doing it. We have not, we didn't build the microphones, we didn't get the room to build in straight. We had to make sure we had to send a lot of emails. Shout out to Joe. Thank you so much, Joe. Thank you so much. But yes, I was just shouting out our Tebs. We should we do a lot of emails, we have a lot of exchanges because we want to make sure everything is good to go. But Emily, I have nothing else
left.
Emily Brewster-McCarthyThat's it. I think we're good.
Derek RossWe're good, we're good. Bye everybody.
Emily Brewster-McCarthySee y'all next time.
