Welcome to Design Anatomy, the Interior Design Podcast hosted by friends and fellow designers, me, Bree Banfield.
Speaker 1:And me, Lauren Li with some amazing guest appearances along the way. We're here to break down everything from current trends to timeless style.
Speaker:With a shared passion for joyful, colour-filled and lived-in spaces. We're excited to share our insight and inspiration with you. And today we thought we would start giving you a bit of a roundup at the end of each month. Our top five, which we've been doing, nice quick little episodes for you that give you some great information. So we're gonna go through our top five for October. I can't believe October's done, by the way.
Speaker 1:I feel the same. It's just ridiculous, isn't it? And we are getting into Christmas mode.
Speaker:It's there, isn't it? It happened so fast this year. Mariah Carey singing in the background already.
Speaker 1:Um, okay, so um this month there I've got a few things I want to share with you guys. The first one is tiled furniture. I really love tiles, and I have noticed. You do? I do love a tile. I love all the tiles. I love tiled coffee tables, and I've noticed that Polly designs do great tables, coffee tables, plinths, and everything like that. And they're based in Melbourne. But when we went on our trip last year, I stopped over in London and I came across this amazing cabinet that was completely tiled. And it's been living in my head rent-free ever since. And I saw it in London. It's a place called the New Craft Maker, and the maker is uh his name is Matthew Raw, R A W, if you wanted to look him up. And he's based between London and Paris. So he creates the tiles and also creates these amazing pieces. Oh, so he's creating the tiles as well. Yeah, so there's ceramic tiles, they sort of have a zilige sort of look to them, that beautiful handmade quality. Um so I have been coveting a tiled coffee table for a while. So I have to just decide.
Speaker:Like, how could you file I almost felt like you were about to go? So I ordered one.
Speaker 1:I know. I've been thinking about it, but I I how could I decide? I don't know, it's possibilities.
Speaker:I don't know. This isn't um at part of my top five, but uh Bonnie and Neil also make, I guess, um, probably a bit more affordable than the bespoke uh one you saw and not a cabinet, a coffee table. That really some little coffee table and side table set with a timber frame and a tile top as well, which are really cute.
Speaker 1:I did see those. They are so cute. Um, I love their cushions and stuff as well.
Speaker:Yeah, no, beautiful. Lots of colour, lots of great pattern.
Speaker 1:Yeah, definitely.
Speaker:Love Bonnie. Love beautiful people.
Speaker 1:They are. What about you? What are you loving?
Speaker:Okay, so I have tried to keep mine to new things for October, which is hard because we lose track of everything, right? Uh, I think I've managed to do it, let's see, or close to. Um, so my first one is Jono , our friend Jono Fleming, released a new collection with double rugs called, I think it's called Wild South. She's as she says, as she check notes, checks them out. They are so gorgeous. They're really beautiful. Um, I mean, I knew they he'd do a stunning job, but um, I already specified why didn't job. Have you? I'm not surprised. I just didn't told him um because they're just the colours were just really pretty too. I specified the um the Tasman, which is it's described as brown, but it's very red base, it's kind of plummy kind of tones, you know, sort of brick pattern. But you know, the story behind it's really beautiful. Take a you take a minute to jump on the website and and look it up. It's called the Wild South Collection, and it's all about inspiration from Tasmania, which he and his husband, they were recently married there, and they kind of fell in love with Tasmania. And so sort of it's got a really it comes from such a beautiful place. So yeah, very Australian as well. I love that. So yeah, go and check out John Ozier collection. I think pretty affordable too, like in a in a good space.
Speaker 1:Um, that is so funny.
Speaker:Yeah, have you got that on your list?
Speaker 1:No, I've sp no, I've specified that exact same rug as well. It was it was just a consultation that I did, but I put that one forward. Yeah, it's a pinkish brown colour, it's beautiful. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker:Isn't that stunning? Yeah, beautiful. I'd like to see it in this space.
Speaker 1:Same. Oh, I love that. Yeah, very clever. And um, we have to obviously mention John O's amazing book that's just come out. I had that too. Okay, I'll leave that for you to talk about.
Speaker:No, no. Well, you know, it's kind of like one of the same. I put Johnno Double Rugs and New Book.
Speaker 1:Amazing.
Speaker:So yeah, technically one, technically two of the top, top five. Um, but the book is really stunning too. I think he's just put a lot of work into he's someone that is all about the detail, um, a very much of my ilk, you know, and doesn't do things by half and works very hard. Um, and the new book kind of you can see it, you can see the detail in the cover and the um the beautiful printed pages on the edge. I don't that I think that has a technical term when they do that. Or on the coffee table with yours. So yeah, isn't that cool? And I have friends that write books and I've got their books on my coffee table.
Speaker 1:I just got John O's book as well, and I have to sit down and read it, but it is packed with value. Like it's not just a book that you're gonna quickly skim through, like you want to read and you want to dive in. And I just read the the first um sort of page where he sort of acknowledges, does he? Yeah, he kind of acknowledges who's sort of helped with the book and everything and where it the whole origin of it. Um that I'm gonna sit down. I was literally just at my computer pretty practically all weekend, so I haven't had the chance to have that downtime to sit down and just read it, but it's beautiful.
Speaker:It is stunning. So is that your number two? Well, did you know it wasn't? But I'm so glad that we let's go with your number two.
Speaker 1:Well, my number two is Mochum Fabrics at the moment. I'm doing some stunning fabric designs. There is a shear that I have specified, it's called Ronde, and it's like a coloured watercolour, kind of cloud-like shapes.
Speaker:I also just borrowed that.
Speaker 1:It's beautiful. I'm not surprised. I've seen a few designers, you know, put it in projects already and um loving it. There's also one called Assemblage, which is like an unconventional take on like a collage where these um embroidery stitching and fringing kind of overlap in a stripe sort of pattern on like a linen background. It's beautiful. And another one, quadrata, which is like a really large check.
Speaker:So it's like love that one.
Speaker 1:I really want to specify that one. It's like translucent and textural sort of geometric shear because I love a shear. We all love a shear, but sometimes we're like, what else is there?
Speaker:Yeah, especially those texture ones. That one's one of my favorites. I've got that like literally on my desk to go into a project as well. Because, yeah, because of that exact reason. Like it's like I want this just to have a little more elevation and there's you know a whole wall of shears. So if you can kind of, I don't know, make it a little more interesting. I like it. I like I think this is where a lot of this the shears are going, you know. With I still love a plain shear as long as it's got some beautiful texture and I don't specify white shears very often. So it also it's really tricky to find ranges that have a good range of colours, don't have to be bright colours, but I like a bit of nuance in the colour.
Speaker 1:Agree.
Speaker:Um, which, you know, Laconia Air used to be one of my favorites. Have you specified that before?
Speaker 1:Oh, it's a big colour.
Speaker:And they've just reviewed the they've just reviewed the colours and they took out like there was that ballet colour that's was soft, warm um pink. Oh but like in a good pink that kind of worked with all the terracotta's and um clay colours that we seem to be using a lot of or have been, and they've taken it out. So like I was really like, oh, that's probably one of the best colours.
Speaker 1:Oh, but I'm not surprised because they must just sell white and cream all day long.
Speaker:I know exactly, and that's why it's hard to once I find a good range. Um, actually, Warwick have one now, and I want to say it's called Shiloh off the top of my head. I only just kind of discovered it, and it does have a really good range of colours. It's not as high-end as the Laconia Air, which like that was a pure linen, it's more I think it's a linen mix, so it doesn't quite have that weight of it, but like sometimes you just need bright colour and you just beautiful.
Speaker 1:They're doing great things.
Speaker:Like them. I hazard my number two is um IKEA. I did it, I did an IKEA walk the other day. So I don't do them very often. If I order stuff from IKEA, I go in through the back and I go directly to what I need because I am a tragic IKEA shopper that would go to get one thing and come out with 20. That's where they get very influenced.
Speaker 1:It's not your fault. That's the way they plan it.
Speaker:It doesn't cost much, and I feel like I could use this. And so uh I was actually picking something up with um my youngest, who's such a lovely boy and will, you know, just kind of come around come along for the for the walk, although he was definitely rolling his eyes at the end. But I said, let's just do a walkthrough. I haven't done a walkthrough in a while. We've got time. We've got time wasn't actually a lie because I thought it might have taken us like half an hour, and I think we were there for like an hour and a half because I just thought, I just haven't, you know, sometimes I have a look and like I use IKEA, I guess, sparingly in even in projects where like we just need a couple of good, like there's a couple of great chairs or whatever it is. We don't have the budget, it's in the study or it's in the kids area. You know, I own a bit of IKEA because again, like there's just been some great pieces and I know what works. And also there's a lot of ordinary stuff. But it's good to go through it and have a look and go, okay, actually, this this is way nicer than I thought uh that I saw online or something that I haven't seen and didn't pay attention to. I've got a really good sofa at the moment. I can't think of the name of that one, but um, but anyway, so I was hoping there might have been some just random pieces less left of the um Gustav Westman uh collab, which literally there were people lining up, you know, probably in sleeping bags or whatever to get that. And I think it just sold out the morning it was released. So I'm hoping they will release some more things. Um there's a couple of great lamps and things in that range. I always love it when they do a great collab. They usually pick some amazing um people who also love colour usually. So there's always some great pieces. Um, but yeah, so loving that collab, if you can you can probably, I don't know, do a bit of an eBay slash, I don't know, Etsy slash something where they're probably reselling it for far more than it actually costs if you're desperate to find some. I know some people that got some multiple pieces, but they did have to line up and be there that morning. And then they got whatever was kind of given to them, allocated to them. So it was a whole big thing. Um, but yeah, anyway, I just I did see some cool stuff in IKEA. I did buy more than I should. I went, I did need to buy a mirror and I did buy a really great, it's just a white frame mirror, which I'm gonna paint. Uh, because I I really need a full-length mirror. All the ones that I want are too expensive. Mirrors are really expensive.
Speaker 1:Oh, over a thousand dollars, easy. Yeah.
Speaker:Um, so that's not happening at the moment. I don't have the the the spare funds for like uh the ones that I actually want. So I thought, what have IKEA got?
Speaker 1:But what a great place to save. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. I think I know the mirror that it's a really fine white frame.
Speaker:Yeah, it's just it's like simple soup. Yeah, just a simple one. The inside's on a slight angle, and I'll just tape it and um I've got paint already from painting some other stuff, like property. Of course you do that, you know. Yeah. So I'll paint that and just put it in the room. And I might do, I might do some straps. I'll see how it that trips. Ah, you know, mask some, you know, anyway.
Speaker 1:Stay tuned, love it. Um, I think that, yeah, IKEA, if you can go in there strategically and like you want to avoid the the lack shelf, the thick, floating shelf. Oh, yes. There's things that you just would not touch. They're so done. I'm putting together a bit of a reel, actually. You know, you see those reels sometimes on Instagram, the top kicks. So I've been kind of going through what I think is good as well. But yeah, we we went a few weeks ago, and of course, you know, the girls think it's just the ultimate in fine dining to go to the IKEA restaurant. Not fine dining. But what is it about putting food on a tray that is so appealing? They love that. So, anyway, we did that, but I think IKEA very clever. My third pick is our favorite girl, our favorite gals in Milan, Studio Pepe.
Speaker:Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1:I saw that they just showed an armchair at Artisima, which is an art fair that I think is happening now or soon. It's called the Shibari armchair, and it's got this really clever twisted back detail. Yeah. And I just love everything that they do.
Speaker:Um, yeah, no, that's so true.
Speaker 1:They're so talented, aren't they? They're so clever, they're such great designers, they're so talented at creating that experience. You know, being able to experience their installations in Milan is just one of my favorite highlights. And actually, um, when I first went to Milan, I think it was 2017. I um somehow a brand gave me an opportunity to visit one of their apartments uh on the press day, I think it was. And I met them. I met them, Brie. As if they were ever. I don't know.
Speaker:You already told me, I'm pretty sure.
Speaker 1:I'll probably I'll just drop it into conversation as well. Um, so yes, they have this really cool armchair. So I'm loving that at the moment too.
Speaker:Very good. Okay, so my next one is also a like a recent release. Oh, rugs again. Gosh, I'm on I'm on the rugs. There's so many good ones. Um, and that's Weave Home, who do really beautiful homewares. They're like a subsidiary of Quark Fabrics, um, great cushions, really good go-to cushions. Okay. And they also do rugs, and they've just released a new one called Um Fabian, which is just a really beautiful, um, kind of fairly natural colour range, and it has that sort of sizal look, but with like the little fringed edges on either side. Okay. And I'm kind of loving the subtle, or kind of complex but subtle, earthy tones that they've got because I think they'll work so well with so many different spaces, even if you've got kind of brighter colour, they're a really good base. So, yeah, I would check out check out their rugs. I think they're quite good quality too for a great price. Also, they're well always about that, you know, good affordability too. I think that's important. Yeah. Um, so not patterned, like kind of quite different to the double look, but yeah, still really, still really lovely. And you know, if you're looking kind of for a refresh, I think a rug is a good option to kind of change the whole feel of a space.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and I'm sure we can all appreciate what a $20,000 rug is. Like we can appreciate that that's been handcrafted by somebody who's just literally sat there with that rug for six months. Yeah. But if you have pets, if you have a family, and if you don't want to walk on eggshells, then you you can kind of, you know, there's definitely a a place for a rug that is in a more affordable bracket, but still looks gorgeous. So can you just buy a rug from the Warwick website or is it trade only, or how does it work?
Speaker:No, so uh yeah, you can go straight onto the Weave Home website. I think they they also have been doing a little bit of work with them and they do have a like an AR function so you can like see the rug in your space, you know, take a photo and put the rug in there. So that's what's a little play show.
Speaker 1:Cool. Um, my number four is the Maker and Sun and Studio Elm collaboration. So I I went up to Sydney a few weeks ago, and I the first thing I did when I got there was to check out those amazing armchairs. So make it and sun is the pinnacle of comfort. If you're looking for an extremely comfortable sofa, so comfort is your number one, and they are aesthetic as well. I think they look great, they are a plump sort of sink into feather cushions, that type of thing. This was a really clever collaboration. So they partnered with Studio Elm, who are based in Sydney, and they distribute India Madavi and a few brands. It's it's really actually quite playful, colourful, joyful, which is kind of our vibe, right, Brie.
Speaker:Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 1:And the fabrics that they chose are really different. I know I was chatting to the lovely guy. Oh, I'm gonna have to remember. So Make It and Sun are now distributed by Oh, yeah, you're right.
Speaker:Uh, because I went into the little pop-up in Richmond and saw they had the um actually had the studio Elm pieces in the window there too.
Speaker 1:Okay. So Make It and Sun is now under the crafted furniture brand umbrella. So you can go into the crafted showroom and you can see Maker and Sun. So that's great because Maker and Sun previously didn't have a showroom. You had to, it was a really cute concept with a mobile kind of service where they would have a van and you could, I don't know if they still do that anymore. But anyway, the fabrics they've chosen are really colourful and playful. They're made in places like Senegal. They use these Swedish beach blankets, which I didn't even know were a thing. And the fabric is designed by different talented people from all around the world, so it's very individual and it's it ticks the comfort, the aesthetic, the colour, like it's ticking all the boxes.
Speaker:Yeah. Except it's really high quality.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah. So obviously, with all of that come, you know, comes a price tag. But you know, if you really want to invest in something, they're definitely pieces that are going to last an extremely long time. They're like, you know, your future heirloom chair that gets re-upholstered by the grandchildren or something. So true. Um, and you can see the quality. They do have the pop-up in in Church Street in Richmond, which I don't know how long permanent that is, but I think they're still there at the moment. And they did have a couple of the studio elm pieces in the window, which is what actually I was sort of in the area doing something else, and I went, Oh, it's that in there because of the colour.
unknown:Yeah.
Speaker:And then realized it was them. So yeah, and then you can kind of see the quality and and everything in there. But yeah, no, I agree. Great, great softs. And a lot, and a lot of their stuff is all removable covers as well, which people kind of love the idea of. So depending on the fabric and things, you can actually remove the covers or change the covers or have them cleaned, etc. So I guess there's there's a practicality element there, isn't there? True. Uh, okay, so um was really fortunate to attend the launch of Venton and Venting's New Range, which is I keep wanting to say it's called Mexicola, which is close. It's called Ola Mexicola, which is kind of cute, but just really colourful, fun pieces. I really loved their um plate set, so they had like cute little motifs in there. They've also even got like a jersey, kind of like a um soccer jersey, which I thought was really cute, and shorts, which I kind of want that outfit. What do you mean?
Speaker 1:They sold clothing.
Speaker:Yeah, they did a actually did a collab, and I'm gonna check who it was with. Sounds super cute. R Sport, R Dot Sport.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker:Um, so they're local, Melbourne local makers of like um, I guess sportwear. Sure. And they did a little um collab with them, and it's so cute. So at the event there was a lot of both men and women rocking that outfit, and it made me go, I want, I want to do that. But it's really cute.
Speaker 1:I love it. Oh, we can't wait to see.
Speaker:Yeah, so that was a really, I don't know, just just something a bit left of centre, but the range is quite big. It's all super colourful, there's beautiful tablecloths and dinner wear and bags and yeah, lots of things that they're kind of grouped together that work in the Ola Mexicola. Um, but I just I think they're they're doing really well. Gosh, another company who's kind of, you know, was in trouble and and had done really well since somebody else stepped in to help them out. And I think they're kind of, I don't know, doing really nice stuff. So let's go and have a look at their Ola Mexicola range.
Speaker 1:I will.
Speaker:And they always do look, I think we've talked about gosh, I think I talked about Finch and Pinchin last time on the when we were talking about art, because they do really have such a great range of, you know, some affordable, some a bit more artworks as well. Such a great good go-to for that.
Speaker 1:For sure. Um, my last one is a bit non-design related, but it's been so good. And I have been learning about all of the changes about Instagram. So apparently there's like a whole lot lot of new things that they're launching and changing, which I know people get a bit upset about because they're like, no one sees my stuff anymore. It was this um Instagram Summit by ManyChat.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker 1:It was it was live. You could attend live, but it was all recorded. So you can just tune in. And I think it's available till the last week of November. But um, if you want to learn about Instagram, like I would highly recommend it. There's a whole lot of amazing um speakers in there on different topics about Instagram. But it's been really interesting learning about, you know, how to create content that is going to attract new people or how do you nurture your existing sort of audience? Little tips, entertaining, I guess they're kind of like tutorials in a way, and you can kind of grab a little bit of information from everyone. And I was just at my computer doing some documentation and I just had it playing on in the background. So if you are curious, it's called many chat. So many chat's that thing, it's like an automating thing. I don't know if you follow me on Instagram, comment the word, blah, blah, blah, and you get the DM. That's many chat, but they have this really great summit. So that's what my non-design related tip would be for the past month.
Speaker:Well, I have a non-related non-design related, which I was trying to make it slightly design related, and I think you'll be well on board with this one, and that is Lily Allen's new album and fine obsession. Obsessed, obsessed. You know, the way I can tie that into interiors is you know, you remember they did the AD, you know, the classic AD walkthrough. And now that you know, if you've been following this and you know a little bit more about David and you watch that again, it's kind of creepy. Kind of creepy, especially and true. It's funny. I think just watching their dynamic is so funny because I I really didn't pick up on it before because I think Denis, I'm a Stranger Things fan, and his character in Stranger Things, I'm a huge fan of. And I think that you I I maybe projected that a little bit onto him, knowing nothing about him at all as an actual person. So I just and I love Lily Allen and have we both love Lily Allen. Definitely and have for a really long time. So just for me, she seemed like she was really happy. And I was like, oh my god, they're so cute together, blah, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, flash forward and uh I think it's two, two or three years since they were married. That has now, I guess it was quite public. But the album that she just like launched without kind of without warning, and I think she recorded it in about two and a half weeks. If you want to, if you're interested in her, go read about it because it's quite interesting. But the album's actually amazing, but it is very scathing and quite detailed in terms of the breakdown of the marriage and the things that happened. Um, but in a very, very typical, very, very clever Lily Allen way. Um, yeah. So if you want to get obsessed about something for you know, if you've got time to do some rabbit hole digging, which is kind of what happened with me. And I think you too, Lauren.
Speaker 1:My algorithm is just feeding me all of it.
Speaker:Um anyway, so that's my that's my other not, that's my non-design related. Yes, semi, semi-slightly design adjacent. I don't know.
Speaker 1:Well, I mean, the her podcast Miss Me with Mikita Oliver, like I'm a huge fan of that podcast. And you would see her talking in that house in the backdrop. She had this like tiger print chair and it looks amazing. Like the house is so cool and everything.
Speaker:The house is very cool.
Speaker 1:But then a few weeks ago, Lily Allen said that she wasn't going to be able to join Miss Me, and she'd had a few little breaks and stuff, and people were sort of wondering, oh, is she creating new music? And she'd she'd talk about it every now and then, creating new music.
Speaker:So I was hoping that it's seven years or something since she'd released anything, right?
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah. I remember she did this really great cover of uh Licky Lee's song, like the Swedish artist, on the Laca version, and I just love that. It's cool deep end that song. Anyway, um, so anyway, I'm a fan of Lily Allen and that I'm so excited for her success and just the recognition and everything, right? Because that her last album was like a major flop, which was sad. So yeah, I think that's a great, it's it's occupying a lot of my brain. So yes.
Speaker:I think it's kind of very key that I mean, she that it is an excellent album. It's not just a great album because it's like, ooh, gossipy, and like, oh my god, I can't believe he did that. So true. Um, it's actually uh like there are some absolute bangers on there, like an absolutely slapped. So I feel like she's she's really come into her own in terms of I think she's most she's out of her best creatively when she has something to say. And I felt like that's what she just all poured out of her, and it's kind of, I think maybe even some of her best work, to be honest. But we'll see what's just space. But it's been great watching her Instagram and you know, the whole, I guess, the big not a glow up because she's always been stunning, but more just like being out and about and looking frigging fabulous. And then the Halloween, because you know, we just have everyone doing the Halloween stuff when she trust up this Madeline. If you know the song, that was for me, that was like, oh my god, it was like genius, too good. Yeah, too good. Yeah, oh that's oh, and when she she posted about going to buy the bag at Bergdoff, did you see that?
Speaker 1:I didn't see that one. The expensive bag. Oh, I love it. No, I did see that. I did now you remember, yeah, I remember.
Speaker:Sorry, sorry. I know we're probably being maybe slightly niche now.
Speaker 1:But you know what?
Speaker:If you know, you know.
Speaker 1:I think that you know, my girls, they're 11 and nearly 13, they listen to obviously Taylor Swift. I mean, I I I can lean into that. I wouldn't probably choose to play it. They love Sabrina Carpenter, who I'm not a huge fan of. Um, but for our age, Bree, we have Lily Allen, and it's so awesome that you know we've grown up with her in a way, and now she's getting her, you know, this amazing recognition. And there's yeah, there's uh music that's kind of created for our tar because I know that a lot of my friends in the past recent few years have come through a marriage, come through the other side of divorce. So it's a very relatable story, unfortunately, for a lot of our recognition, our era. So I just think that's just really cool.
Speaker:Yes, she is, she's awesome. Yeah, um, that's our wrap-up for October. We'll give you another one in November.
Speaker 1:But yeah, yeah, we'll have an exciting episode next week, don't we, Bree? So stay tuned for that one.
Speaker:We've got lots of exciting ones coming up. I know um you've been listening to a lot of us lately, but it's because we're building uh like a ridiculous amount of great guests in the background that are coming up. So hopefully you're still like listening to us anyway.
Speaker 1:Yes. Well, did you know that our podcast was number five the other day in the design shop? Crazy, I know. So we were number seven and then we jumped up to five. And I mean, it's something I don't check on the daily, but I was like, oh gee, that's pretty cool. Like we're up in some big ones, Bree. Yeah. Thanks for listening.
Speaker:We love you guys.
Speaker 1:Oh, we do. All right, thanks. Have a good week, Brie. Talk soon. You too. Bye. We've got the utmost respect for the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. They're the OG custodians of this unceded land and its waters, where we set up shop, create, and call home and come to you from this podcast today. A big shout out to all of the amazing elders who have walked before us, those leading the way in the present, and the emerging leaders who will carry the torch into the future. We're just lucky to be on this journey together.
