Five Turning Points
All of us have what I call 'turning points' in our lives. These are events that have ultimately shaped who we are today.
This podcast explores leaders and people of influence as to what were five turning points that shaped who they are today.
'Turning points' could be people met along the way, critical events in one's life such as births, marriages, deaths, paths taken that were less travelled.
Come and join me on this great adventure!
Five Turning Points
Tony Doherty - Never Give Up on Anybody - Especially Yourself!
Tony's Five Turning Points are a great mix of family and business. Grandparents had a strong and early impact on Tony. Grandpa's legacy was "illegitimi non carborundum" - "Don't let the bastards get you down"; a theme that built an early resilience in his life. At JLL, Tony led the team that expanded the retail portfolio from 75 to over 300 shopping centres under management across Australia.
His fondest occasion was connecting with John Maclean in 1996-a powerful "sliding door" moment where Tony played a key role in guiding John into the world of public speaking that ultimately funded his many key achievements. John had previously been hit by a truck whilst training for a triathlon and became a paraplegic. Years down the track, John became the first paraplegic to swim the English Channel and completed the Hawaiian Iron Man. John also competed in 2 Olympics and continues to chase his dreams. Tony sits on the Board of the John Maclean Foundation, Dare to Hope and Chairs the Millennium Service Board.
Wrapping up Tony talks about a life learner underpinned by another one of his favourite sayings "Green and you will grow". Ripe and you rot" - Tony is far from rotting.
Considering all his accolades, one of his favourites is the "degree" his kids endorsed in "GSD"- "Get Stuff Done". Want a job done, want to be mentored or coached, Tony's your man!
