Guest Introduction
Scott Raven: Hello everyone. Welcome back to The Corvus Effect. This is Scott with our TL;DL, Too Long Didn't Listen, from my conversation with Lisa Snow, founder of On the Mend Wellness, where she's been revolutionizing employee wellness for over 17 years.
What makes Lisa's approach unique is her commitment to making wellness not only unintimidating but beneficial to the bottom line. It all comes from a profound truth that she discovered: the same lack of systems and processes that prevent leaders from prioritizing their health is exactly what's creating chaos in their business.
I certainly hope that you go back and listen to the full episode. It was a wonderful chat with Lisa. But in this TL;DL, let's dive into some of the key takeaways.
Takeaway #1: Your Health Bottleneck Is a Systems Problem
Scott Raven: First, Lisa's game-changing insight that leaders can't prioritize their health if they have a willpower problem that is masking a systems problem in their business.
She explained what drives someone like that to initially hire someone like her. They think they need help with the right exercises, the sets and reps, what the macros should be. Those are the nuts and bolts. It's more about how they have things in their life so that not everything feels like a fire drill. They don't have the proper systems and processes in order to prioritize diet and exercise. They've become their own health bottleneck.
This resonates perfectly with our Corvus principle. When we're talking about health, career, wealth, and connection, they're all interconnected. It's your core systems that help you succeed across all of those dimensions. You can't capitalize on any one of the dimensions when the systems with others are broken.
Takeaway #2: Wellness Is a Retention Strategy with Measurable ROI
Scott Raven: Secondly, her revolutionary reframe that wellness is a retention strategy with a measurable ROI, not a nice-to-have perk.
She cuts straight to the numbers. The average cost of turnover is 213%. That means if there's an employee who you're paying $100K and that person leaves and you didn't want them to leave, that's potentially costing you $213,000.
For small businesses where employees and payroll are the single biggest cost, understanding the cost of turnover goes far beyond just the salary and the additional effort to find a backfill. There are so many more elements in terms of the lost benefit to that business.
Lisa explained it beautifully. If a client's favorite attorney leaves, that client is gone. So what is the five-year value of even half of that attorney's book of business? People associate with the people that they're working with, maybe not necessarily the business name.
As we think about that in the context of Corvus, understanding that health, wellness, proper systems, proper morning routine, and proper evening routine help drive the foundation for financial success. Those are paramount, and those often go overlooked. That is often the reason why people say, "I'm doing all these things, but I'm not seeing the results." Well, let's look back at the foundation that you have.
Takeaway #3: Connection and Community Are Fundamentally Human
Scott Raven: Finally, her profound understanding that connection and community aren't optional. They're fundamentally human.
She says no employee wants to be fully isolated, regardless if they're extroverts or introverts. They want their coworkers to know who they are. They don't want to just be a number.
This is especially critical for teams that have formed post-COVID, which are very distributed in nature. Whether it's a hybrid situation or a remote situation, it's not necessarily a given that people are physically seeing each other every single day. But they do want connection with the people in their workplace.
That is why Lisa, through her work, creates effective community versus forced community. She uses beginner-friendly classes, gift boxes, and shared experiences that invite people to build connection without feeling forced to create it.
How many times in the workplace have you had a situation where you really didn't want to work with a boss, a teammate, or another organization, but you had to? I'm not saying that is something you can completely avoid. That is going to come up. But it's far better to build your professional environment with people who you enjoy working with and have true connection with. That's the biggest thing in terms of Lisa's practice.
