Meet Joe Mindak
Scott Raven: Hello everyone. Welcome back to The Corvus Effect. I'm Scott, and welcome to this TL;DL, Too Long Didn't Listen, summary of my conversation with Joe Mindak, a serial entrepreneur with 25 years of proving that generosity scales.
He's launched and exited multiple businesses across many industries, founded The Connective, a vetted community of over 550 professionals generating millions in referral revenue, and developed the Noex platform to track referrals and commissions that can now be used to revolutionize chambers of commerce at scale nationwide.
He's an amazing individual in terms of how he says what he's going to do and does it, and creates output and impact, inclusive of being able to take time at the sauna with no phone, have time for walks with his wife, and sustain his success. I encourage you all to go back and listen to the full episode when you get a chance, but I want to dive into some of the key takeaways from my conversation with him.
Stay in Your Lane
Scott Raven: First, Joe's philosophy of staying in your lane and delegating everything else to people who excel where you don't is really at the heart of his success. He was very clear when he says, "I'm not as busy as most people think I am. I'm not on fumes all day long, catching up. I've always got the best people I can to be part of the team and rely on everyone to do what they do best."
He's unapologetic that he loves sales and he loves connecting people, and that he delegates other things to the people who really enjoy that part, such as his business partner Adrian handling all the operations, contracts, and other elements of running a business.
This is something that we hear at Corvus talk about: you cannot be the best at everything, but if you focus in your zone of genius and have the right team around you to complement what you're good at, you can create amazing outcomes and impact. It's all about the people that you surround yourself with.
The Missing Incentive
Scott Raven: Second is his revolutionary insight that traditional networking was missing a critical component: the incentive. After years of being the one to give out the most referrals and not getting anything back, he realized that it was the incentive that was missing.
His breakthrough came when he referred a hundred thousand dollar piece of business and thought, "I should have gotten paid for that." That led to The Connective's game-changing model where people are not there just to network, but also to get paid for the referrals that are coming in. There's an incentive for people to truly generate B2B revenue with each other, and it creates a win-win model where connectors get compensated for their natural talent. It also allows people to naturally want to build deeper relationships with people that they trust because they know they can get the job done, fueling an economic engine.
When we talk about the giving mentality that's inherent to how we create impact from a Corvus perspective, giving does not necessarily mean expecting nothing in return. There are definitely times where we're giving from the goodness of our heart, but it's also something where we have to be aware of who we are giving to. If we are giving to somebody who is naturally a taker, is that the type of relationship that we want to have on a long-term basis? Something for us to think about in terms of where do we spend our generosity and our energy to truly make the world a better place.
Finding Stillness for Clarity
Scott Raven: Finally, his powerful practice of finding stillness to unlock strategic clarity. Just not stressing out over what you can't control.
His morning routine includes time in the sauna, time swimming, being able to have walks with his wife with no phones, no TV, no distractions. Oftentimes he would say a lot of his best thoughts came from when he wasn't able to be distracted by the outside world. He would have his "holy shit ideas" that would come to him simply because he was allowing his brain to decompress and not have so many stimuli coming in, allowing the creativity to really prosper.
Because he purposely manages his stress to be low, he allows his brain to not have to spend its energy dealing with the stress, again building up his creativity. When we take a look at putting the cognitive load in our brain at a place where it can do all the things that we ask it to, how many things do we ask our brain that simply are not necessary or are a waste of our energy and stamina? Sometimes the best way to move forward is to disconnect from where we currently are.
I think that's one of the most refreshing things about how Joe has done it. He didn't get all worked up over every little thing. He only focuses on what matters.
