Now let's solve some pool problems with your host, Frank and Jackie Disher. You
Unknown:Hey friends, welcome to the deep end with Burt and Jackie his side kicking life and on the air. You're listening to boots on ground radio shout out to them, yep, yep. We love hickamus.
Jacque:Hickam. You. Yes, yeah. We need, we need to. We need to have them on the show, yeah, because they're absolutely dark. We need to see hecms. We need, he needs to come take, y'all need to come take boots on ground
Frank Disher:radio, just in case y'all know what it is, boots on ground radio is a contractor radio station for many different trades, yeah, and basically different people, like, we're the pool guy. I don't, I don't know if we got another full show on there. I don't think so. But
Unknown:there's so many other if you've got, like, a need for a contract, go look them up and look at all their shows, because they're, they're fabulous. A
Frank Disher:lot of, like, for the industry, like, roofing, uh, landscaping, just, just all the different, you know, Lord, AC, HVAC, yeah, just, you name it. If they don't have a show on it, they'll have one. I have a show on it soon, right, right, but we did want to give a shout out to boots on ground
Unknown:tomorrow. We head to Hawaii, Hawaii, we do for the care craft.
Frank Disher:It's their annual meeting, not
Unknown:called a convention. No, they don't. They don't call it a convention meeting,
Frank Disher:but there's, yeah, but it's like care craft is a buying group for the pool industry, and there's well over 100 many, many, many, many vendors that care craft provides a direct link to it's ridiculous. It saves a lot of money for if you're in the business and you do a little bit of volume, care craft is a is a good outlet for you. We save a lot of money by buying from care craft, and you're basically buying direct from the manufacturer through care craft, right? And
Unknown:it happens to be in Hawaii. I couldn't decide if I was gonna say Waikiki or Honolulu, so I got confused. Yes, it is in Waikiki. And so I said, Okay, I will suffer for the cause, yeah. And I will go with you. And
Frank Disher:hopefully we'll, you know, I'll be able to get a couple interviews out there on some interesting people in the industry, but we love their meeting. It's really good networking, networking with people in the industry and networking with manufacturers and representatives of manufacturers. But I really looking forward to that. Yeah,
Unknown:yeah. So and we had the day of love. Yeah,
Frank Disher:we had white or Yeah, Valentine's, Valentine's
Unknown:Day. Our youngest Love Bug turned 11 months old. 11 months, yes, 11 months. I can't believe it. She's almost a year old. Yeah, we'll have her birthday party next. But she
Frank Disher:she smiles every time she sees
Unknown:a hoot and a half man. She just laughs and smiles. She's smiling, yeah, and
Frank Disher:AV, we've got see AV the other Oh, my goodness, I like y'all yeah more than you. Okay, okay, I get it. I get it.
Unknown:Hate the truth hurts.
Frank Disher:She'll grow into me. Yeah, it is. And then we
Unknown:get to see our foster and Parker in a couple weeks, because Parker is in Allison, Allison Wonderland. She's the Red Queen off with your head. She's so I can't wait to see her. She's gonna be really good in that row. And Foster is gonna play some basketball
Frank Disher:industry or a business right now we're about to go in the spring. And getting really excited going to be having our grand opening for our Roanoke store. We kind of had a grand opening and when it opened in August,
Unknown:but we opened after the season. So we're gonna redo that, finishing, redo, revisit, or it is what it is. Yeah, we're
Frank Disher:gonna press the rewind button on that, or take a mulligan. Got some really good deals if you are in the DFW area. I'm not kidding, these are gonna be the cheapest deals you see. Y'all
Unknown:stay tuned, because we're gonna start to announce them. Maybe next two shows.
Frank Disher:Yeah, we'll start talking about some of the pricing and stuff. I really don't want to throw pricing out there. Just know it's cheap. Yeah? I mean, we're just trying to get a lot of people to walk in the door. We're gonna have a lot of events, free, Bahama bucks, snow cones, who is right next door, right next door to us, big buddies?
Unknown:Yeah, they're, they're our friends, and they're going to offer a lot of stuff. They're
Frank Disher:going to work with us. They maybe do kind of a re Grand Opening also,
Unknown:yeah, you buy this, you get that they're going to do. If you buy that from them, you get this from us, all the things.
Frank Disher:So we're looking forward to that that's going to be, hopefully, we're going to be a lot of people in the front doors, and that's in Roanoke, Texas, Roanoke store, yep. And what else we got going?
Unknown:Well, I mean, I'm going to give a shout out to you. I mean, you hate talking about but all the things, but we were selected into the Aqua 100 Oh, yes, which it's published in April. Yeah, this is an aqua
Jacque:magazine, magazine. I found out,
Frank Disher:yeah, we just, we just, we just found out that we got selected. That's, that's exciting. What in the world y'all? That'll be another trophy on the wall. So, well, I guess they give us a trophy or something. They only select 10 a year, right? And it's, it's nationwide. It is nationwide. It's retail businesses. And we're honored to be selected into the Aqua 100 so one of the class of 10 for, I guess 2025 we're excited about that. It's
Unknown:it, would you go in 2025 but it was for a year in 2024 No,
Frank Disher:I think, I think it's the, I think they call it the 2025 selection.
Unknown:Oh, got it, yeah. No, I didn't know what that deal was. Yeah,
Frank Disher:they do all the inquiries and stuff in 2024 but I think it is for the they call it the 2025 class. Got it so,
Unknown:see, we've just great class of 2025 that makes us so young. Okay, I'm in it. I'm in we're 4141
Frank Disher:years older than the graduation date. So
Unknown:did you have to? I'm sorry, what I can't hear what you're saying. I know, right? That's true. It's true. Today. What do you want to do today? I
Frank Disher:wanted to do listeners questions. So I'll pull up a couple listeners questions. I'm not sure how far we'll get. Yeah, because, believe it or not, I've been known to talk a lot. What? Yes, that got brought up at convention where we are known to speak.
Jacque:Y'all. The joke is when and when people come over to me, because I never know where Frank is, because he knows that I can fend for myself. And so he is. He is not a gentleman that has to have me on his arm. He goes and does his thing. So people come up to me, go, where, where's Frank, where's Frank? And I'm like, Oh, he's over there running for mayor, talking to these people. And so everybody always says, Frank, running for mayor. Who's he with? And all the thing. So because we just do our thing. We have friends together, but we,
Frank Disher:I mean, I talk to everybody. I don't want, no, I don't want to miss anybody. And
Unknown:so do I some of those wives? John O'Brien, okay, I have to tell this on, John O'Brien, I hope, I hope he listens to this one After tagging. John O'Brien, the founder of pull works. It was after the gala night at the pork convention, and we were at the after party kind of thing. And he's calls me from the room, and he says, Jackie, and he of course, in his Australian accent, and he does his little finger over to to point me over. And I thought, okay, he wants to tell me something about the night or whatever, because we were at their table, he and Helen, and he said, I need to go be with the boys. I need you to sit here with Helen. And so I literally spent the rest of the night with the lovely Helen, his wife, who's a who is fabulous, and I adore her, and can't wait to see her in Australia a little bit. But he went over to run for mayor with Frank. And so they were all ho ho. And as my daddy used to call it, you go and Ho Ho Ho to everybody. And so it was the funniest thing. But I do my thing too, and a lot of other ladies came up wives that their husbands were also doing their thing. And so it was the funniest thing. I loved it so much. Yeah,
Frank Disher:and I just got to talk to everybody, especially the new people. Yeah, franchises, well, I mean, you know, being new to convention, yeah, I mean, it's scary. It is scary. I mean, I mean, you're, you're a little worried about what you get into and all this stuff, and you're not sure what you're going to be doing and and how to do it, you know, because we offered up, you know, hey, come stay with us. Yeah, and we have the Disher Bed and Breakfast. Yeah, call it the Disher Bed and Breakfast. Yes, because we've invited so many people to come down and stay with us, ride with my guys, spend time in our stores, see what we do, and then do it with other franchisees. I recommend this to anybody in any industry. Spend as much time with other people in the industry as you can and see how they do things, and then you find what's best practice for you. And I even do some of that. You know, I reach out, constantly talking. I'm constantly talking, but I'm constantly talking to other franchisees, wondering how they do things. Because if there's a better way to do it than dad gunman, I want to figure it out. And, you know, everything should be best practice.
Unknown:And we're going to send our people to anybody that has a not, I want to say a better way, but a way that looks like innovative or maybe better. I mean, I don't
Frank Disher:know. I want to try it off. You know, I haven't spoken to you much about this, Jake, but we're probably fixing to go to, here we go on air. Our service side. I'm strongly considering doing a service fee plus chemicals and charge chemicals separate because of the tariffs that are looming. They may never happen, but the tariff doesn't necessarily have to happen for an industry or a manufacturer to say, hey, here's an opportunity to go up on prices, and then they use every opportunity they can, and they end up making more profits because of price increases. So I expect there's a big to see what happens, yeah, but I expect to see a lot of changes in pricing. And you know what? I shouldn't get punished when prices go up because I'm providing a service, right? Prices go up on a product and I'm using that product in a service or through retail or whatever. Well, my prices that I sell it for and trade it for need to reflect my price. Sure. So if my, if my price goes up, your price is going to go up. And we hope people understand that, yes. And, well, I mean, if you don't, you know, it's kind of tough luck. You know, nobody says that I gotta lose money to help somebody take care of their pool. I'm here to help. And I give what I can. I do for full schools. I'm in people's backyards all the time for nothing. But if it's going to be a product that I had to pay for, I got to charge for it. Yeah. And you know, if I was filthy, sticking rich, if I was Elon Musk, you know, I would probably give it away. I wouldn't care, but you know that ain't how my boat floats,
Unknown:but you give a lot away that your CFO is like going, we do you're about to get in trouble, yeah?
Frank Disher:Well, we got that one for our church Milestone Church, yeah, for serve day. We have a single mom with a few kids that has a swimming pool, and she doesn't have she has no idea what she's doing with the pool. The pool's gotten away from her equipment's broke, so as part of serve day, we're going to get this lady's pool up and going replace some equipment for and get her taken care of. But that's through the name of the church, yeah, you know, and which is Milestone Church, by the way, the world's greatest church, Keller Texas, yeah, Keller Texas. And we do have things, you know, anytime somebody is in in need, we try to, we try to help anyway, we can sure, but, but anyway. But today, speaking of helping people, we're doing listener questions. Okay,
Jacque:this is somebody in Dallas So, and we have to make sure, because we have listeners all over the nation, but in the world too. So this is indicative of Dallas. The reply,
Frank Disher:and I know Dallas better not know anything else. Sure. We
Unknown:have a question that I thought was so fabulous. We have a DFW Pool Owners Group. That's DFW pull owners group on Facebook, on Facebook, but there are other ones popping up. I've
Frank Disher:started them all over. I'll just wait for people to populate them.
Unknown:You gotta populate them. Y'all populate so if you're not in DFW, you want to join those groups, because it will be people in your area, because you started them where we have some poll works,
Frank Disher:yeah, I started where we have some poll works. I'm hoping the local porks in the areas that I started them, we'll pick them up and run with them. Because, I mean, ours just barely been in a little over a year, and we got over 8300 members now, and it's a pole owner advocacy, yeah, now it's, yes, there's some pool businesses in it, but it's really there for the poll owners. I don't allow businesses to just beat people down with advertisements and stuff like that. Don't allow people like we don't allow direct messaging unless requested. I don't allow buttholes and. Know, I'll kick a butt hole out in a heartbeat, you know, just trying to keep it, you know, friendly, keep it calm, keep it helpful, sure. And I want people to post tips. And if somebody post a bad tip, I'll pull it down, yeah? And because, I mean, there's a lot of bad information out there, just like there is good information. But anyway, so
Unknown:this question that's, that's great that you said. It's from a DFW poll. It is. But it's also about somebody said this, and then somebody else said that, and it's, can be confusing. We have full so this is BG, so I'm going to say Bobby
Frank Disher:stay alive. Staying alive. I want
Unknown:to say Bobby green. This is Bobby green, just because that's such a Texas Bobby green, it's such a southern Bobby green, it says I saw your discussion with a member of DFW pull owner group about shocking pulls. Yep. So everybody shocks their pool. I remember the conversation. Do you remember this? Okay? But I thought this was great. So this is why I did this just few days ago. Was it okay? Someone commented the shocking saltwater pools weekly. Is often needed. Got to do it. And then someone else said, it is never needed to shock your saltwater pool. What say you well? And they actually said, I know you responded because you're Frank Disher, I know you responded in the group, but I would appreciate more of a discussion about it. So what say you? Frank Disher, well, hold
Frank Disher:that thought. We're gonna go to break. We're ready to break. When we come back to break, we'll We'll answer that question. We'll be right back.

Unknown:Yeah, I lose sleep over it. I mean, it's so tedious and it takes forever, I can never seem to get them all clean. Well,
Frank Disher:here's a pro tip. Try the cyclone filter cleaner. It uses water pressure from your garden hose to spin the filter as you clean it. This allows all the filter pleats to get thoroughly cleaned out. And the best part is it is fast and doesn't hurt your back.

We're answering the listener question about shocking salt
Frank Disher:water pools. Salt water pools, yeah, go ahead and read the question
Unknown:real quick. Okay, all right, um, it says someone commented that shocking salt water pools weekly is often needed, and then someone else said it is never needed, right? So what's the answer? Friend? The answer is,
Frank Disher:maybe, you know, you know, 100% maybe no, it's, it's alright, here's, here's the deal. All right, you know, there's what the majority does, what the minority does, and what the rare does. Okay? The rare may never have to shark shocked or pull ever for any reason. They just don't get organic loads. They may never get rain. They could be an indoor pool. They could, you know, they may never swim. It's environment, okay, it's just what gets in the pool. Because shocking, and we had a show on this, you know, shocking, super chlorinating, whatever. I know people, you know, they get their, you know, panties all twisted up when you say shock, and it depend on how you use it. But
Unknown:I am shocked you just said that. Oh, did I?
Frank Disher:Oh,
Unknown:that was good. And that totally Heller.
Frank Disher:But people get, people get all, you know, they go, get all bent out of shape about the word shock. But I mean shocking. The most common and properly, proper use of the word shock is adding enough chlorine in a large dose to destroy combined chlorines, or it's dosing to that amount to destroy combined chlorines. But what most people use it as is just to destroy or extra organics, okay, which could be combined chlorines, but it could be, you know, just got a lot of crap in the water. A lot of people swimming got a lot, you know, you just got a lot of stuff in the water. That's your residual chlorine cannot handle, or it would be a lot better if you gave your residual chlorine a boost to help wipe out all these extra organics and take it all out of the mix. Because, and this would this particular question, if I remember right, was about what it was you just said it is about salt water pools, and people say you don't need to ever shock a salt water pool, because your your salt water chlorine maker thing makes all your chlorine you don't need to shock. Well, you know what? It makes it very slowly. It's a very slow process to make chlorine with the salt water chlorine generator. They're good at maintaining Sometimes they're very good at maintaining a residual chlorine level, but if you get a large dose of organics in the water, can quickly wipe out or tie up all your chlorine, leaving your water improperly sanitized. And there's a lot of people out there that have salt water pools that will shock their pool once a week, and the incorrect term for shock where they're basically just super chlorinating, they're adding an extra dose of chlorine to help wipe out all this extra load that's in your water right now, so the chlorine that your salt water system is making doesn't get completely wiped out, trying to destroy this extra load. Now, this can be from dog swimming. It could be from you have seven, eight kids swimming in the pool. It could be because you had a heavy rain that introduced a lot of algae into the water. It could be, you know, you found a couple dead frogs, or maybe a dead possum, or maybe, maybe hippopotamus. Who knows you had something in your water that is overwhelming your chlorine, and it's never a bad idea to have a little spike of chlorine once in a while to help wipe out the extra organics that it's really hard for chlorine to work on, like body oils and stuff like that. So the weekly shocking, I don't have a problem with it. May not always be necessary, but it's not hurting anything, y'all and if I remember right, the person I was in a discussion with which he got kind of jerky about it, and then, so guess what? I got kind of jerky about it, what? And it went back back and forth a little bit.
Unknown:I'm shocked.
Frank Disher:Perfect term, all right, you're welcome. And he was saying, Well, you know, I don't want to come home at 2pm on a Friday afternoon and find my chlorine super high from the shock house that's already
Unknown:Oh, this was an email, and that's how you read
Frank Disher:it. No, he went an email. This was on Facebook. Oh, my word. He might, he might have thrown, like a maybe one of those
Unknown:British Where was he from? I was gonna say, Where was he from?
Frank Disher:He's in a DFW pull owner group, so I'm guessing maybe Sri Lanka. I don't. But anyway, he was saying, Well, I don't ever come home to my pool chlorine all that that high of a chlorine. And I said up to seven day parts per million, which is not very high, sure. I mean, you, yeah, I truly believe you could jump in a pool that had three parts per million of chlorine and pull with seven parts per minute chlorine. If you don't have any combined chlorines or anything like that, and your pH is right, you're not even recognize the difference. Yeah, so. But he's trying to act like, you know, that would just burn your skin off and bleach your bones and all that, which is wrong. But you know, if you're shocking to pull, yeah, you want to get out for a little bit anyway. Shocking is a short lived event. You add this extra chlorine, it spikes up, and a few hours later it's already dropped down very you know, a lot in the pools ready, but you've, you've taken that load off your chlorine, of your residual chlorine that your salt water chlorine generator is making. So you get to keep that residual without having a drop in residual. If you don't shock, your residuals can drop, and when they're dropped, now you're in danger. Now you're okay algae. If you're not killing algae faster than it multiplies, that means you're getting more algae. If you have a, you know, some little parasite or something in the water, or you got Cryptosporidium, you know, because some kid didn't, you know, rinse his is another region real well, or anything that got in the water that needs to be killed to keep the water safe. If that residual is dropped, you're not necessarily safe, so you the shocking just helps prevent your residual chlorine from getting too low and putting the pull at risk of algae or whatever. So it's not bad to shock. It's it's recommended by many, many, many people recommend shocking saltwater, chlorine pools, and since our environment in North Texas is a little bit harsh, yeah, yeah, it doesn't hurt anything. But now, when do I shock pools? When it needs it, yeah, after testing, and, you know, after testing the chlorine levels, if I have a little drop in chlorine and salt water, chlorine generator is functioning properly Well, that means I probably had a load of organics. Anything could have happened? You know, they might they, they may have added too much water and overflowed the pool. Could have been, we had a rain could have been, you know, anything, they went swimming that day or the day before. Had 10 kids over. So the chlorine levels are dropped out. Well, I want to raise the chlorine level up to where I wipe out any organics that may be remaining. And while it's up, it gives my salt water chlorine generator a chance to catch up to where it can maintain a good residual of chlorine, because that residual chlorine is what keeps us safe all the time. So if it drops out, you can give it a boost by using a shocking product. It can even be a non chlorine shock, but it can be calcium hypochlorite, it can be dichlor. It could be liquid chlorine. It's whatever you want to use to add to the water, to give a boost to the chlorine, to burn up all those extra organics so you can get back to normal again. I'm not saying run it at seven or eight parts per million for days on end. I'm not saying that if you follow my math, and my math comes from Bob Lowry, good luck arguing with that reasoning, because Bob Lowery was king. He was extremely intelligent, and he's extremely good at what he did. And Bob Lowry is the one that taught me that you need to keep your chlorine at seven and a half percent of your cya. With Bo H, you can keep it at 5% of your seaway so I just want my chlorine generator to generate that amount of chlorine, whatever my seaway level is. I just want my chlorine generator to generate enough to maintain that seven and a half percent if I'm not on borates, 5% if I am on borates. And then I have to adjust it accordingly as the season goes on in the water, gets warmer and maybe more people are swimming in the pool. I may have to increase the output of that chlorine generator to catch up. But if I come this week where I'm testing it this week, and I'm a little low, I want to add extra chlorine, supplemental chlorine, to take it well past where I typically want it to. I want to take it up to seven or eight parts per million, so wipes out any of that algae or anything that I was not killing faster than it multiplied while the chlorine levels were down. I increase my output on my salt water chlorine generator so it's generating more chlorine. And then when my super chlorination, or my shocking when it starts to wear off, hopefully, hopefully my salt water chlorine generator, since it has nothing to oxidize now, because I just wiped it all out with that big spike, it can climb on its own and maintain. And then next week, we test and go. Again, if I do have pulls that we never we never get out of whack. But if we get a heavy rain, you know, it's probably not a bad idea, because it introduced a lot of algae. It's not a bad idea to shock or add extra chlorine, Spike the chlorine up a little bit, just so I don't drop low on my chlorine levels, because when you drop low in your chlorine and if your pH is out of whack and things just aren't right, that's when you get to spend a lot of money, because now you got algae to deal with, possibly an extra filter clean the pool is not usable. Mama's mad. So shocking once in a while, it's not a bad thing. It doesn't mean you're overdoing anything. Now, at the same time, do I think we use more chlorine than we should? Absolutely, absolutely, I think we use more chlorine than we should on an average basis, but when it's needed, it's needed. There's no getting around that if you need extra chlorine to make the water safe, to keep the water algae free, then you need extra chlorine. That's just all there is to it. So that's about all I gotta say about that.
Unknown:No, I love that, that discussion, because, I mean, the question was definitely way on this side, shocking. It weekly. Oh my goodness, I need to do it weekly. And then absolutely, you don't need to do it at all. Yes, so it's kind of a middle ground testing. Yes, you gotta test it to see that. That's the key. You may be on the shocking side of that, but if you're testing and it's fine, then don't. No, no, you
Frank Disher:don't. You don't necessarily have to. You don't necessarily have to, but, you know, does it hurt that you do? No, you know it's not hurting anything if you add a little extra chlorine once in a while, if it's costing you money, it costs you, cost you a little bit of money, if it's but, I mean, but maybe that's a person that you know they're not going to be able to test it
Unknown:again for another week. Sure. Party, yeah,
Frank Disher:you know, or, you know, they, you know, they saw something in the pool that kind of creeped them out. You know, they had a dead bird, or maybe a dead round or alligators,
Unknown:yeah, Yeti, summertime, you never know. In Texas, yeah, it's gonna come.
Frank Disher:Well, we ain't gonna get no yetis in Texas. You don't know. You don't know. Well, they could do have the COVID. You don't
Unknown:know what comes at night. You're right. I'm just,
Frank Disher:I'm not sitting out on top of that scary people, but night vision goggles, exactly. Well, we are in Texas, but I don't, I don't have any, I don't have any night vision goggles. I don't do any hog hunting. But anyway, hey, we just want to do a shout out all our sponsors. We love you guys. Blu Ray, Excel, Cyclone, filter, tools, pole works. Not a pork near you, become a pork near you.
Jacque:We are growing like crazy. So if you don't have a pork near you, we're coming. We are coming for you.
