Welcome to the everyday adventures of the wheelie hogs join little wee and his family, especially Nana, as they live their lives alongside friends and neighbours in Hogglington.
The crow,
It was a very sunny morning when little wee woke up. The crows outside his bedroom window were particularly loud and excitable this morning. Little wee wondered what all the noise and excitement was about, so he jumped out of bed and wheeled to the window to see outside.
Crow, crow. Crow said the crows, they were all lined up on Papa's shed roof, looking at the ground and taking in turns to swoop down to the ground before heading back up to the shed roof.
There seemed to be a problem of some sort, so concerned, little wheelie made his way outside to see if he could help Nana, who was always up really early. Was in the kitchen making a cup of tea for herself.
Morning, Nana said, little wee, isn't it a lovely, sunny morning? Good morning. Little wee replied, Nana, yes, it is a lovely, sunny morning. I think the crows are enjoying it too, by the sound of them.
Little wheelie explained to Nana that he was just going into the garden to see if they were all right. Oh, good idea, explain Nana.
Little wee couldn't see anything at first. Then he noticed the crows swooping down to the flower bed that Nana had planted in the flower bed were lots and lots of Moon daisies. Moon daisies always made little wee smile. They were happy flowers, and they loved living in Nana's flower bed.
Suddenly, little wee noticed some of the moon daisies moving, as though something was moving amongst the tall stems.
Little wee moved closer and put his head into the plants to see what he could see.
Suddenly there was a very loud Craw, Craw, craw sound and lots of flapping and fluttering of wings. Little wee jumped back with surprise as a young fledgling crow clumsily flapped out from among the moon dazes and fell at little wee's wheels. Oh, said little wee, oh, crow. Crow said, the young Crow, and they looked at each other, both a little startled, the other crows were all still on Papa's shed roof, but they had stopped squawking and crowing, and were watching little wee with interest.
Good morning, lovely crow said, little wee, how are you on this fine and sunny morning? What are you hiding in the moon? Dazes? Are you all right?
Actually, said the crow, I'm a bit fed up. All my brothers and sisters have flown the nest and are flying high and having fun, and I just can't seem to get the hang of it. My family of friends are all up there on the shed roof trying to give me support, cheering me on and encouraging me, but I've landed down here on the ground and just can't seem to take off and fly.
I'm sorry you're finding it difficult. Said little wee to the crow. Would you like some help to find a way to fly? Oh yes, please. Said crow. But how can you help me? You are on the ground and don't have wings. I need to be taking flight up into the air.
Hmm. Said little we he loved figuring things out and finding solutions. So the crow patiently watched as little we paced back and forth and forth and back, thinking, thinking, thinking of a solution to Crow's predicament.
Suddenly, little we said, I've got it. I think I have a solution. Crow. Crow, crow said, the crow, how can you help me? Ok, little wee replied, I want you to jump onto my back, and as I wheel down the garden, you can start to flap your wings. As I roll faster, you flap faster, and then you can start to fly.
Crow was so pleased.
That sounds like a great idea. He said to little, we with excitement. Let's try it. So crow jumped onto little, we've back, ouch. Said, crow, your spines are too sharp on my feet. Hmm. Said, little, we again. Think, think, think. Then, no problem, said little wee as he promptly began to roll on his back in a patch of moss in the grass. Crow laughed. He thought, little wee looks so funny rolling his spines in the moss. But it was working. Little wee now had a very soft covering of moss on his spines, so crow jumped onto little wee's back, ready, said, little wee Yes, said Crow, and little wee began to roll down the garden.
Little wee rolled. Crow flapped his wings. Little wee rolled faster and Crow flapped his wings faster, faster and faster. Crow could feel himself starting to lift into the air. Then suddenly, crash, crow has fallen to the ground again.
Are you okay? Crow said, Little we Yes, yes, I nearly did it. Let's try again. I could feel myself lifting into the air. Crow replied with excitement and a feeling of anticipation at flying so little Wee and Crow tried again and tried again and tried again. And with each new try, crow lifted higher and a little higher and higher, higher up into the air. And then he did it. On the fifth try, crow began to fly.
Little wee was rolling as fast as he could. Crow flapped and flapped his beautiful wings, and suddenly Crow was soaring higher and higher into the air. In fact, he went so high that he was looking down as he circled above his brothers and sisters who watched the whole thing from the shed roof. All the crows were happily crowing and calling and little we watched his new friend as he gracefully swooped down to thank little we crow felt so good. Thank you so much for all your help. Said Crow, it was my pleasure. Said little wee, and with that, crow spread his wings and effortlessly soared high into the sky.
Nana had been watching from the house, good work, she said to little wee as he wheeled into the kitchen, little wee was hungry. He was ready for breakfast. After all that excitement and hard work that night, little wee dreamt of hitching a ride on the crow's back and flying high into the sky. He imagined how amazing it would be to drift and swoop on the breeze, looking down onto everything from above, and he was grateful to have made a new friend.
Hello, wheelie hog friends. Can you see any crows from your window? They live in cities and towns, as well as in the countryside.
Perhaps you can listen out for some and make a sound like a crow too. They can be very noisy.
There are also lots of different types of crows. Perhaps you can find out how many species of crows there are.
Until next time roll with the wheelie hogs.
