Uh, we were just chatting before the podcast about uh a photo shoot we did last night. So Shannon hasn't had updated headshots. I mean, we've done a few like randoms, but not like a full session. What since 2020? How old were your headshots?

I want to say it was 2021. Fall of 2021. I'm trying to like give myself more credit. I'm trying to end it. I'm like, so it was not January, it was fall of 2021. So I feel like I get like that's another whole year right there. That's unfortunately how my brain works. So yeah, it had been a while. Oh it yes. And you've been on me um a little bit, like low, low pressure. Last few months. Yeah.

And did anybody ever say anything about your headshots that maybe like it was time to get new ones other than me?

Or did you just because I feel like I feel like in overall it's something people are kind of bad about. So what would you as the professional recommend? I know what I've read, I know it like the internet suggests, but I feel like it's a little long, like what the internet suggests for like, and I when I say the internet, I did like, I don't know if I was reading something or like I a quick I think I was reading something and it kind of was in the article or whatever. And I thought it was a little far out. So what do you suggest for headshots? How long in between?

Okay, so I just I just did a Google search. How often should I get new headshots? And it says every one to three years. I would say every six six months to a year.

And the thing I read said like five years, and I was like, that's ridiculous. And especially think back to like think to tw. I don't know if this is a good like think back to 25, like age, right? Even just any of those ages, right? Like 25 to 30, uh, 30 to 35. Like that's a that's a long time. And if you're working full time as a professional, I mean I hate to say it, but you've probably aged. I'm just kidding, I'm kidding. I'm kidding. But no, we do. Like, like fine wine. You look better. Like you can tell when I had to be dated. When you said to me last night, I'm so glad I don't have to share that old head shot.

Never, I don't you took it, so I I kind of feel like you're bashing both of us. It's fine, but like it's not your you're like not my fault. I took it and it was great five effing years ago. They were great. I mean, they're just yesterday when you said like I don't know, something about going in and knowing I was getting new ones, my brain finally looked at it and went, yeah, this is dated. Like, besides whether I changed didn't change like feature-wise or whatever, physical wise, which obviously you I did, it was five years ago. But regardless of that, like just even like the style yeah, this even the photography, yeah, and photography, yeah, all of it.

Yeah, yeah. Because I mean, you think I thought about this last night when I was leaving, that photography has really shifted since AI. Like before AI, we we really wanted that smooth, kind of textured look. Yeah, or untextured look with portraits, almost like a little dreamy, creamy, whatever. And now, because of AI, like you can see those photos and you can tell they're AI that photographers are now shifting back to more of a real real photography. So they're putting people in better locations, they're they're making it look like a real photo, which is exactly kind of or like you. We want it to look like you, we want it to represent you, and there has to be emotion in it where five years ago it was just a headshot. Now it's like, okay, how can I make sure that the person in front of me is going to get the most use out of these photos and enjoy them? So it's definitely definitely different.

I actually I I actually love that. Like it's always interesting to see what it's kind of like the audience determines what that what we want or what we're accepting, you know. And so if you went against the grain like like you said, five years ago and you weren't as filtered, so to speak, um more. People were like, oh, but I want yeah, like, oh, but that's what I want because that's what I see everyone doing, blah blah blah. And I was thinking about you this morning as I was getting ready, as I as I do every more, every single morning stuff. It's just const constant. And um, getting ready.

Everybody's always thinking about me. My my guest yesterday was like, I think about you every day. She's like, your name just pops up everywhere. Like, that's creepy. Anyway, so thank you for the look.

I don't even know who that was. Like, you actually mentioned them earlier. Like we when we were talking earlier, you mentioned them, and I never said, like, oh, who was your guest, or you didn't say their name. Obviously, obviously it'll come out. Who is this hidden gut? No, I'm kidding. But like Um, when you just said that, I thought, and she thinks of you, and it's like a positive, happy feeling. Like, I don't think people are thinking of you and being like, Cass at that bitch, or bitch, Stephanie. Yeah, or like she has like, you know, blah blah blah. She really pissed me out, or whatever. Like, it's a or God, she's always down. Oh, she's so down. She so stresses me out.

I've kind of thought of that. This is I always do this like death stuff and get kind of morbid. And I think of like super professional people, right? Like, like, oh, I'm gonna go crazy and say Oprah's funeral and all the thing greeting that are sent by Oprah about Oprah and like a line. I'm like, as long as when I die, people are like, well, most of my first thought is like, oh, my kids feel I uh did good by them or that I they are good people because you know, in part of because of like me raising them. That blah blah blah. That's my first like goal, I would say. Um, but then the other part is like, I've yeah, I want people to think like, oh, she was not nice. Like, I don't want to be like, because then we're a people pleaser, right? Like there's that balance. So I don't want everyone to be like, oh, she's so nice, she always literally, but just like a like a happier, like higher mood feeling when they think of you. And yeah, that's like a natural thing for you, you know, it's just natural. You're not like trying to do that. You're like, oh, I gotta go out and like be super nice to everyone today or whatever. So I don't know. I'm getting off on a random yeah, tandem there.

But, anyways, um, so what I was thinking there's like a funny Instagram thing. Hold on, let me just say this really funny thing because I think it's relevant. But there's an Instagram reel, and it's like I never because everybody that ever gets murdered, they're always like, Oh, they lit up the room when they walked in. And this guy was like, I never want to be the person that lights up the room because I'm gonna get murdered. So, anyways.

Oh my god, that actually maybe I am thinking of this because the other day I did see a reel and it was like clips from someone like that was uh murdered or whatever, and at the top it was like what people say about me when I'm what my friends will say about me, or people will say about me when I'm dead. And it was like the first one cuts to like this older woman. You can tell she's like it's older looking footage. She's like, She was such a bitch, and it goes to the next lady. The next lady's like, she was so nasty, blah blah blah. And yeah, I don't want I don't want people to say that necessarily. Somewhere in the middle, somewhere in the middle, yeah, is good, but also like I don't know that like like you said, that feeling of heaviness, like, oh, they walked in the room and like I yeah, you like you're like you're you go down instead of up or whatever.

So yeah, yeah, and trusting that, but anyways, I digress. So um how did you feel after the photo session? Tell me all about it, tell me your point of view from this whole thing.

What I thought this morning was because you know, I've I mean I've dabbled in photography. My goal has like been like I'm gonna go do like drop everything my career, like, and just go do photography like that. I that's my goal to be a photographer.

But honestly, you have done headshots, you have done some weddings, you have done family photos. So, like, give yourself a little bit of credit. Like, you've done my family photos, I have one of them on my wall. So yeah, we should redo those.

You shouldn't let me anyways, but it'll take me 100 years to edit them. So I'll give them to your great-great-grandchildren.

Yeah, you have been getting cozy with somebody, but I don't Drew doesn't want to have kids. I don't think none of my kids want to have a kid.

Yeah, that's like what I mean. Like, that could be a whole topic because I've said this before. It's we only saw what we saw in our backyard growing up. Now everyone sees everything. And I literally think we have scared these young people and uh to not have children because of all the shit that's out there that they can like look into your household like on social media and be like and you know, parenting can look fun and rewarding, and those are really sweet, but then like I think they also see like this is exhausting, yes, yeah. Like are totally differing to either later in life or not at all, but that's all that's a whole thing. Yeah, um so anyway, so I was like, This is why you hire a professional. Remember when we were looking at the photos at the end and you were showing me like different ways you you were just showing me like, oh, I set you here so that this would be like in the background or whatever.

Like yeah, that's the one. That's what Shannon can I say, can I just describe it really quick? Yeah, um, there was one shot where I saw an American flag in the and I put Shannon kind of next to that shot because I thought maybe uh it'd be a great photo to use for her business Memorial Day, Fourth of July. Like it's patriotic, so it was just like a one-off shot. So, anyways, keep going.

Yeah, and it was like blurred in the background, like it wasn't like the main focus by any means. It wasn't like hosting and holding a flag, and I'm it's very Americana, Americana. Yeah, and it was downtown Baraboo, and but you had you pointed that out to me, and I'm like, yeah, uh my brain doesn't work. Like, and then just all the things you were kind of showing me, and I remembered that to that uh mural that was in the alleyway. And you were like, like, as I was walking towards it, you're like, okay, stop, turn around. Like, you won't, you don't need to go closer to that. My I don't do that, like, yeah, I would have been like, stand right up against that son of a gun. Like, get her right up there cozy, like that you know all those. The and then I was like, Well, yeah, like because you are a dedicated professional, you have put in the time and effort and the passion to like know and learn all these things, and then you have the eye for it. And whatever you didn't naturally have the eye for, you've you've I think you did always have like a natural eye, but like then you you keep learning, keep evolving, keep growing, and like you with lighting and stuff and all of that, obviously. And it's just like, yeah, you can hire or get a friend or whatever, like to do super cheap, whatever, and then your outcome isn't gonna look like stuff's work.

Yeah, I mean, I have almost 20 years experience, right? That's a long time to be perfecting a craft, you know. Like if you were a baker or uh whatever, right? Like 20 years in, you're gonna if you don't have a good fucking product after 20 years, like you're in the wrong business. You're just in the pump business.

Yes, man. I do agree, I do agree with that a hundred percent, but there are still and oh yeah, there are.

We don't need to be able to do that.

Well, I don't wanna no, I don't want to say like there are still people after 20 years that like that have been doing it for that aren't like good or don't know what they're doing, like by any means, but there are people who can say, Oh, I've been doing photography for 20 years, right? And maybe but but and I'm gonna say this like with no judgment at all, but like maybe this was but it was always a side gig. You know, so they the then then if they're doing whatever else on on their other half of the side that they ha live, they just haven't had that much time or compassion or like or or I should say passion, not compassion, to put into it. So I don't know. I I just I'm I thought that was cool how you showed me after, and I was like, yeah, I just don't my brain just doesn't work that way. And not that I was comparing, but more like that's so cool that you do those things and like they're natural. And like you said last night, you're like, yeah, I I don't you see me looking around and like checking where all the lighting is and da-da-da-da-da. And I will say that I'm sure there's photographers that have been doing it whatever, 10, 15, 20 years that don't there probably are some that do it, you know, do it exactly like not exactly, but like they do it similar, they do those that steps, and then there's some that don't, and then you know, so everyone falls in where they fall. But I I just loved seeing that.

It was funny when you were like, Oh, how'd you get the lighting so good?

You're like, and then and then you slapped me. I you stupid, like you're like, what do you I don't know. I'm still always like so impressed by that because it's hard to, yeah, yeah, it is an art. So I'll always be impressed, my artsy people or people with like craft like that, because um I I feel like I lack in some of that.

So it is also time of day, you know. We didn't go out till like we probably shot from like 7 30 to 8 30, something like that, you know. So there is something to be said about allowing the environment that you're shooting in to work for you. You know, if we would have done that at noon, there was for 11 or 10 or 5, like none of those times work. So, like you have to kind of like with everything, you have to have everything working for you so that you can have the best outcome. And so when it comes to I rely heavily on that part too.

I just I just well, no, because I want to have I want I want to have the best outcome I can, and and I appreciate and I can always tell if somebody trusts the process or they don't, but you know, it's so obvious when you know you just allowed me to do my work. I told you like the colors to wear, I I told you where to be and what time, and you just showed up. Like that's really that makes for a much easier shoot than if you're like, well, why? And I want to wear this, and I can't be there, I can only be there at 5 30 or whatever, you know, like it it's it's definitely an art that is it needs two people to create it.

So how do you that was gonna be my question? Like, how do you combat that or I shouldn't say like persuade people when they are being, you know, and I get it when people are like, yeah, the time just doesn't work from your whatever, you know, that's a whole well, but what what do you say, yeah? What do you do?

SPEAKER_02 17:25

Well, I'll tell you a little story that I've been sitting on since yesterday. I was at Aldi waiting in line to get my eggs, right? Because like there's always a million people just standing there staring at the egg area.

Yeah, and you're asking what the egg in the mills area, yeah.

So I'm like patiently waiting my turn to get my eggs, and somebody comes in from the other side and goes in front of me, right? She wouldn't look at me, nothing, like she just like wanted her eggs or her milk or whatever she grabbed, and I was just like staring at her, like waiting for her to like look at me, like you know, like but she wouldn't obviously because like she knew what she was doing was wrong on some level, but she was just so concerned about her own eggs and getting those eggs that she didn't care about anybody else in that process. So when I have somebody like that in my studio or in front of me, there's like nothing I can do to make them see. But if they give me like a little bit, if if she would have like given me a look or if she'd been like, I'm I'm in a hurry, I'm this, I'm that, something, yeah, like then I can work with it. But some people are just completely, you know, in their heads, in their zone, focused on like maybe what's next, or maybe what happened before, whatever, and and you can't get through. Not even with uh, you know, bone thugs in harmony or some sort of random song or whatever, you know. Like there's just some people you can't help everybody.

Um that's what that's all that was. I was I was very happy with everything, like obviously, yeah. I mean, I loved I you told me to wear yellow because I'm a Leo, and to let and I was thinking, and I'm not kidding, like when I first saw it, like obviously the people in the the photos that you shared to like get for the inspo were were were lovely and they're whatever. And I'm like, yellow, I don't know. Really?

I was like, I don't, yeah, I was I was like saw it and then thought about it in passing, and I'm like, Well, I do have like a yellow dress. I'm like, I don't know, like yellow, and then I have blonde hair. Like, is that I don't know. I just like was kind of thinking it through my head. Then I finally got down to my cloud and like put it on, and I go, oh, this is like fun. So yes, trust trust, trust in stuff we trust, like just that's what you need to put on your business card. Just freaking trust me. Like, I know about what I'm doing. Yes, yes.

So, how do you because uh you've done headshots for some realtors and realtors are hard to photograph. So, like, what do you do in that situation when they're just you know not willing to give you much?

SPEAKER_01 20:34

I don't I mean, I'm not like you or I tell I'm like just dressed and I, you know, I don't tell them what they should. You take the time, and I think you know, you obviously think about um I I just want to point out when I did when I do mine, they're they were for free. It was just me doing them. So they were paying me to like be a fantastic photographer. Let's just say that. Anyways, they um they paid you with their time though. I mean they I feel yes, and I feel like what they got was was an upgrade from what they had, if I can say that, I think. Um, but I think uh or I know like you take the time to like actually think about the person, which what I do that in marketing. So in the thing I'm like, I want to say like you could say I'm more invested in, right? I take the time yeah, yeah, like to think about when someone's like when a business owner is thinking about how do I reach these people or how do I get in front of the right people. I'm like very often business owners aren't actually thinking about the person they're trying to get in front of, they're thinking about their business. And know that I'm not offended. That is all that is just it's just the nature of the beast. Like you just can't help yourself but to think about your business. So you start thinking about like your product or your service or whatever that you provide. Versus who is this person? What are they doing right now? How would they start looking for me? What, you know, all of those things. They're their customer journey, their client journey. Um, and you do that in photography.

I mean, I do that in photography, but I don't do that in my marketing. Like, that's why you have to hire a marketing person.

Right. So there you go. We're perfect team. That's what I'm hearing. Perfect parent. We are. Yes.

Yeah. I mean, that's like that's again why I'm doing the workshop is because there's you can have the perfect product, the perfect. Like, I feel like my system works really well when I get somebody in front of my camera and I enjoy the process, but marketing is not my passion. And the hardest part is getting somebody, you know, to connect with me. So yeah, you have your own art form that like seems to be a different language for me and for most people, most business owners.

We'll say for like for photography too, and again, I'm not bashing there are so many freaking photographers in the world. You can't put any of them in one bucket or two buckets or ten buckets, like they all have their own blah blah blah craft um experience. But I will say I feel like a lot starting out, so say I'm talking like for first five years, they're like they're not so those they go to Pinterest, right? Love Pinterest for for this type of stuff. For sure. Hate hate the freaking ads. Um, anyways, but um Pinterest, like, and then they just start to see like kind of their style and what they're drawn to, I think, or like what's hit, what's in style right now, versus thinking, and maybe you did this in the first five years, right? Like, yeah, everyone has to learn and start somewhere. Um, you think about I think you think about the per now, me obviously no, that's different, a little different. Um, but you didn't have to take the time yesterday to be like, oh, should I like help Shannon out and tell it, like, you know, I have a million clothes. So but you think I think you think about like their skin tone and everything.

Yeah. What's gonna look like I mean, I'm what's gonna make them an analyst. But yeah, I'm not an analyst, but I do I do throw photos and it's a I suppose this is probably I should ask permission, but I've put photos of you and Claude and ask Claude as a color analyst. No, I'm I'm Nate even Claude, so it's not in color. Yeah, just your face, nothing else. No, yeah. Um, and I just think it's important because so many women think we need to be in black and white and blazers, and I thought that too for a long time. And we are not black and white people, and again, that goes back to AI, right? Obviously, all of a sudden everyone's doing these AI photos, and it's like, okay, we need to go back to who is this person, you know, and yeah, and AI when they do make them look good.

When had like when AI, if you ask AI to do like a headshot or something, like it does put you in that very like almost like 90s look. Do you know what I mean? Because it's yeah, it only can take it only can take what it knows from like the internet. And so if you Google like professional headshots, you that's the look you like often get. Yeah, but then there's the ones that are standing out that aren't necessarily that, and that's another reason to like not have your headshot go for five years and get it done prior be or sooner, because that was the you know, think of the standard in the 80s, like the freaking shoulder pads, like you know, like yeah, like it all keeps changing. Um, and then obviously I know you would say, like, and then just be true to yourself. Like when I first started at where I'm at right now at Remax, um, one of our broker owners, they were doing a lot of um kind of like points, point, and there's a green screen screen behind you, and then you can take that and use that in your social media and your marketing, whatever. And you're like pointing at a house or pointing at a sign. And one of the broker owners said, So they I said, Oh, someone said you need to get more of those, you need more of those photos, and I was just kind of like following suit, you know, because like you're new and you're just trying to like get a feel for everything. And she goes, Oh, I hate those. I go, Yeah, me too. I go, so don't do them. Like if you hate something, that's gonna show. So don't do that, you know, like uh if and especially if it's not like portraying you or your personality or whatever it is, like you said, people are wanting more authentic things now, so be authentic.

You know what Claude told me about you is that um the headshot in the dark in the dark blue shirt, the navy, um that I I love that headshot of you, but it said it wasn't a good color for you. So then I put a picture. Sorry. So then I put a picture of you. I'm realizing how wrong it is to like put pictures of you in Claude right now, and I apologize.

I mean, if it's like who's this I can hear you, can you hear me? Yeah, I guess. And I said if you if you if it said like you're an ugly bitch, like, oh, that's an ugly bitch, don't tell me it says that, but everything else is no it didn't say that so then I found another picture of you that I took um for Angels and Arrows, and you were in brown, it was a brown jumpsuit.

And like Claude was like, Yes, yes, girl slay, like this is her color. Um, and then when you actually put that brown outfit on, or that you know, like that same tone last night, it was like, Oh my god, she's a goddess. Like it it it really does, like that color analysis stuff is is super important, and um and it helps it's creative, and it like you said, it's authentic, and there's so many, so many beautiful colors out there. We shouldn't just be in black and white.

Yeah, I love it. I mean, like I said, I would have never been like, I'm gonna wear this bright ass yellow dress, and I but it's playing it pretty and I felt like yeah, and in light and flirty or whatever, and you know, so um, yeah, trust your process. Trust trust the professional that you're freaking hiring in any regard, like unless it's they're telling you something like really, really off the wall, or but like uh doctors telling you to take a drug you're allergic to. Don't trust that, you know what I mean? Like, but for the most part, trust because you're hiring a person.

I mean, in marketing though, we all want to be like experts now, yeah.

We yes, we do like everyone's an expert now because of AI, and it's like, but our but but but you're not necessarily like no, yeah, and do not take a lot of things. That's a whole AI ghosting making up shit.

Yeah, yeah, do not take relationship advice from AI. I I can't say this enough. Um, because AI is gonna side with you no matter what, whether you are a drunk person beating your wife, and it'll be like, oh well, she probably deserved it, or something like that. Like, like it's gonna side with you no matter what. So don't um I I mean that can we go back to trusting the process for just a second? Because I asked you about photography and clients and all that stuff, but you didn't like you have stories about clients and marketing, not trusting the process, and and the same thing happens, like you waste so much energy, it's it it sucks the life out of you, it sucks the creative energy, like between you and I yesterday, right? We had an energy between us creative, trusting, friendship, dancing, like life is good, and with marketing, it's the same way, right? Like you have that relationship with somebody, if they let you be the best person you can be for the job, it's amazing.

Yeah, I would honestly say there are some clients that I have that I have I want to say, like I knew that if they could just not be super involved, um, it would be for the best. Not all clients are like that, like they're all they're all different and their level of participation is different. But I knew for this one, like he like I just needed to be able to do what I needed to do. And that was gonna be the best. And that's like how I work with them is you know, some people are oh, let me, I have to like read through the blog you're gonna write for me, or I need to review those keywords. Or well, I probably wouldn't let anyone review all the keywords because that would be they just don't always know what um they fully need, but uh this particular client like he does not need to review this blog. Like, I need to do the whole, I need to do the blog and I need to get it on a site and I need to promote it, and that's that, you know. So uh obviously I'm gonna meet people where they are, but then I do you have to like guide them to the in a position that will uh help them like actually help them and sometimes they have to be willing to be involved that help helps them.

I loved my play. It was all like uh late 90s, early 2000s, like hip-hop, RB, for the most part, I would say is what it was.

Yeah. Well, I tried to do alternatives, but alternative music from the 90s is Stark AF. It's like yeah, that would have been a different feel. Yeah, so uh we were stuck with uh you know ice cube and but I mean that was sexual. Like, what do we grow up with? Like sex and sadness?
