it's three speeches where he goes through and a lot of it. 00:19:10.413 --> 00:19:29.969 You can get caught up in the details, but remember this as you're reading the point of the law, and I think the point that Moses is trying to make is what they should be focusing on is their relationship with God At this point should be focusing on is their relationship with God At this point. 00:19:29.969 --> 00:19:37.671 Their relationship was based on obedience to the law, and so he's calling them to keep the law a lot, but the focus on keeping the law is so they can be in relationship with God. 00:19:37.671 --> 00:19:43.534 God has said that I will be your God, you will be my people, if you keep this law, and so that's what he's doing. 00:19:43.534 --> 00:19:49.016 So he's telling them, but today I just wanted us to focus right in the middle of Deuteronomy 6. 00:19:51.066 --> 00:19:53.535 We know this is the Shema or Shema. 00:19:53.535 --> 00:19:59.012 People say it different ways, but here's what he says Deuteronomy 6, verse 1. 00:19:59.012 --> 00:20:05.473 Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the rules that the Lord, your God, commanded me to teach you. 00:20:05.473 --> 00:20:09.790 That you may do them in the land which you are going over to possess it. 00:20:09.790 --> 00:20:21.528 That you may fear the Lord, your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all these statutes and his commandments, which I command you all the days of your life. 00:20:21.528 --> 00:20:23.791 That your days may be long. 00:20:23.791 --> 00:20:35.593 Hear, therefore, o Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you and that you may multiply greatly, as the God of your fathers has promised you in a land flowing with milk and honey. 00:20:35.593 --> say it's the theme verse of Deuteronomy, because there's a bunch, but it is A. 00:21:33.352 --> 00:21:35.472 It is pointing to Israel. 00:21:35.472 --> 00:21:41.152 You have this covenant relationship with God and at this point it's two covenants. 00:21:41.152 --> 00:21:49.476 You have the Abrahamic covenant, where God has promised Abraham land, descendants and blessing the earth. 00:21:49.476 --> 00:21:56.729 So they're under that covenant. 00:21:56.729 --> 00:22:01.313 But they're also under the Mosaic covenant or the covenant of Mount Sinai, where he says I'm going to be your God, you're going to be my people, keep the law. 00:22:01.313 --> 00:22:12.417 And so he's calling them to do that, but he's pointing them to the focus of the law Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might and with all your strength. 00:22:13.105 --> 00:22:21.613 Now, for us, in the New Testament, it's a little bit different, because the law is still important to us, but we're not under the law, we're under grace. 00:22:21.613 --> 00:22:26.075 Jesus kept the law perfectly because we can't. 00:22:26.075 --> 00:22:38.505 Jesus kept the law perfectly because we can't and he applies that to us so that now, because Jesus has done that and because we've received mercy and grace from him, we can love the Lord, our God, with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. 00:22:38.505 --> 00:22:48.032 So as you read Deuteronomy, as you continue to go through this yes, I know you can get caught up in the detail and it just seems overwhelming. 00:22:48.032 --> 00:22:52.714 But remember, all of this is pointing us to, it was pointing Israel to. 00:22:52.815 --> 00:22:54.218 This is how you love God. 00:22:54.218 --> 00:22:57.230 This is focus on these things. 00:22:57.230 --> 00:23:04.050 This is how you love God and for us we can see okay, we are able to love God because Jesus did all this for us. 00:23:04.050 --> 00:23:06.433 He kept all of these laws for us. 00:23:06.433 --> 00:23:09.438 He did it perfectly and rightly so. 00:23:09.438 --> 00:23:11.540 We can be in relationship because of Jesus. 00:23:11.540 --> 00:23:13.571 But it doesn't do away with these things. 00:23:13.571 --> 00:23:25.883 Now what it does, instead of bringing us into relationship, and then it doesn't even keep us in relationship with God it just tells us this is how we can grow in our relationship with God. 00:23:26.565 --> 00:23:27.770 All right, a couple of questions. 00:23:27.770 --> 00:23:36.153 Okay, why did God issue, or why did they have, the law in the Old Testament when we don't have it in the New Testament? 00:23:36.153 --> 00:23:38.313 Why were they given the law in the first place? 00:23:38.566 --> 00:23:38.826 Okay. 00:23:38.826 --> 00:23:46.737 So Paul's going to say in Romans what the law does is help you recognize that you're a sinner. 00:23:46.737 --> 00:23:49.871 It's really what it does for us. 00:23:49.871 --> 00:23:52.614 In the Old Testament, they didn't view it that way. 00:23:52.614 --> 00:24:01.690 What it was is a covenant, is an agreement, right where you come in and there's stipulations I'm going to do this, you're going to do that. 00:24:01.690 --> 00:24:03.453 So that's the covenant. 00:24:03.453 --> 00:24:07.711 God says I'm going to be your God, I'm going to protect you, I'm going to take care of you. 00:24:07.711 --> 00:24:18.766 He even said in places in Exodus that he is going to send his angels ahead of them and as they just take over Canaan, the promised land, they're not going to have to. 00:24:18.766 --> 00:24:22.396 They really weren't going to have to fight If they would have just obeyed and trusted. 00:24:22.396 --> 00:24:24.109 God was going to take care of all of that. yes, that's one of them, but sacrifice is different from that, because sacrifice pointed to a Savior. 00:25:12.717 --> 00:25:31.699 We don't sacrifice because the Savior has come, but things like wearing clothes made of two kinds of material, not shaving the corners of your beard, I mean there are things like that that don't apply, because those are the things that just that was just
