--> 00:19:26.588 This morning or this afternoon, I'm going to be talking a little bit about some things that I've been going over with our students in the student ministry. 00:19:26.588 --> So today I'm going to teach you a Greek word. 00:19:47.005 --> 00:19:48.768 Some of you probably already know that word. 00:19:48.768 --> 00:19:58.200 It's called oikos, the word oikos, and so I asked our students you know they were looking at me like what are you talking about? 00:19:58.200 --> 00:19:59.163 What does that mean? 00:19:59.163 --> 00:20:04.523 And I said well, it's not something that's found in your parents, in your refrigerator at home. 00:20:04.523 --> 00:20:06.892 Okay, that's the yogurt. 00:20:06.892 --> 00:20:08.516 I'm not talking about the yogurt. 00:20:08.516 --> 00:20:13.925 I'm talking about the Greek word oikos, which translates to household. 00:20:13.925 --> 00:20:19.938 Okay, it's a very important word that we see in Acts, chapter 16. 00:20:19.938 --> 00:20:31.143 So let me just paint a picture for you Paul and Silas in Acts, chapter 15, they are going and they are witnessing, they're sharing the gospel. 00:20:31.143 --> 00:20:34.417 Everywhere they go, they're meeting new people, people are coming to faith. 00:20:34.417 --> 00:20:44.065 They're starting churches wherever they go, and Paul and Silas are being faithful followers of Jesus in Philippi, All right. 00:20:44.065 --> 00:20:47.313 And so they meet this woman named Lydia. 00:20:47.313 --> 00:20:48.234 She gets saved. 00:20:48.234 --> 00:20:54.327 And then that's when you first see this word household I believe it's oikos household. 00:20:54.327 --> 00:20:59.896 Household, I believe it's oikos household. 00:20:59.896 --> 00:21:01.240 And you know, it's when somebody gets saved and then or not, oikos. 00:21:01.240 --> 00:21:06.897 What happens is they are talking to people and then the people turn around. 00:21:06.897 --> 00:21:14.058 They've trusted in Jesus, right, they have believed, repented and believed in the gospel for salvation. 00:21:14.058 --> 00:21:18.636 Then they take that message to their oikos, their household. 00:21:18.636 --> 00:21:21.222 We see that happen in Lydia's life. 00:21:21.222 --> 00:21:30.557 And then the place where we're going to be today, the passage that we're going to be in, starting in verse 25 through 34, we see the same thing happen to the jailer. 00:21:30.557 --> 00:21:34.003 So let's look in and see what happens with the jailer. 00:21:34.424 --> 00:21:57.436 At the end of chapter 16 in Acts, Starting in verse 25, of the prison were shaken and immediately all the doors were open and everyone's bonds were unfastened. 00:21:57.436 --> 00:22:06.622 When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 00:22:06.622 --> 00:22:11.280 But Paul cried with a loud voice do not harm yourself, for we are all here. 00:22:11.280 --> 00:22:13.787 And the jailer called for the lights and rushed. 00:22:13.787 --> 00:22:21.680 Called for lights and rushed in and, trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas. 00:22:21.680 --> 00:22:28.075 Then he brought them out and said, sirs, here's the key transition here in the jailer's life. 00:22:28.075 --> 00:22:32.218 Okay, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 00:22:32.218 --> 00:22:35.019 And they said believe in the Lord Jesus. 00:22:35.019 --> 00:22:37.520 And they said, he and all his family. 00:22:37.520 --> 00:23:07.421 Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them and he rejoiced, along with his entire household, oikos, that he had believed in God. 00:23:07.441 --> 00:23:08.242 Isn't that an incredible story. 00:23:08.242 --> 00:23:16.209 I am so excited to share this because Paul and Silas find themselves arrested and thrown into prison in Philippi. 00:23:16.209 --> 00:23:23.988 They were walking around and these two guys who had this slave girl, they were profiting off of the money of her services. 00:23:23.988 --> 00:23:46.183 She was using divination and trying to tell people's future and people would pay these men so that this girl would use her divination, her evil spirit of divination, on them in their lives to help project or foresee their future, or whatever it was. 00:23:46.183 --> 00:23:49.413 Whatever it was, people were buying into it, All right. 00:23:49.413 --> 00:23:57.670 So, Paul, she was pestering Paul and Silas and she kept saying hey, I know who you are, You're followers of Jesus, You're Paul, Like I know who you are. 00:23:57.670 --> 00:24:05.499 And so she, Paul, was like got fed up with her, you know, like she was nagging and annoying him. 00:24:05.499 --> 00:24:10.528 And he said and he turned around and cast the demon out of her and so the demon left. 00:24:10.528 --> 00:24:22.048 That's great for her, but it was bad for profits for the people, for the slave owner, and so that's why they were in jail. 00:24:22.048 --> 00:24:41.248 And so in my mind, like if I'm thinking according to you know the way David thinks in his mind, in his flesh, in his sinful ways, like I'm in jail and I'm like, wow, I was trying to be faithful and look at me now living it up in the jail house, and so that you know if I'm looking at it like that, like that's how David is seeing it. 00:24:41.248 --> 00:24:43.251 You know, look at me now. 00:24:44.233 --> 00:24:46.699 But what do we find Paul and Silas doing? 00:24:46.699 --> 00:24:53.478 We find Paul and Silas singing and praying and everybody in the prison is hearing them. 00:24:53.478 --> 00:25:03.551 They are hearing worship of the true and living God, Talk about sovereignty, Talk about trusting in God's sovereignty. 00:25:03.551 --> 00:25:11.577 In the situation that you're in, we typically sit back, pray that God will change our situation and then just sit back and wait until it happens. 00:25:11.577 --> 00:25:14.114 Whether it happens or not, that's what we're often doing. 00:25:14.114 --> 00:25:20.065 But we see Paul and Silas sitting and resting and trusting in the sovereignty of God in their situation. 00:25:20.065 --> 00:25:22.212 They are not living it up right now. 00:25:22.212 --> 00:25:31.490 They are in jail, suffering, They've been beaten, they're sore, they're hurting, but they're worshiping and praising God and praying to Him. 00:25:32.009 --> 00:25:35.875 And so, out of nowhere, the earth starts shaking. 00:25:35.875 --> 00:25:45.925 The shackles come off, everybody's ready to get out of there, like I'm sure. 00:25:45.925 --> 00:25:47.269 But the jailer comes in and he's like oh, I've made a mistake. 00:25:47.269 --> 00:25:47.971 I've let all these people go. 00:25:47.971 --> 00:25:48.815 These people were in my care. 00:25:48.815 --> 00:25:49.195 I've let them go. 00:25:49.195 --> 00:25:50.420 They escaped under my watch. 00:25:50.420 --> 00:25:58.818 I'm going to end it now, because what's coming from the kingdom or what's coming from the Roman rule is they are going to kill me anyway. 00:25:58.818 --> 00:26:01.913 So I might as well do it quick and painless as it can be. 00:26:02.757 --> 00:26:06.326 Paul says hey, no, Paul, remembering God's sovereignty. 00:26:06.326 --> 00:26:13.499 Hey, there's a reason why I'm here in this prison, there's a reason why I've been shackled, and maybe because it's this jailer. 00:26:13.499 --> 00:26:15.311 So he shares the gospel with them. 00:26:15.311 --> 00:26:17.472 The guy says what must I do to be saved? 00:26:17.472 --> 00:26:19.913 And they tell him believe in the Lord. 00:26:19.913 --> 00:26:22.944 Jesus Repent and believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved. 00:26:22.944 --> 00:26:27.211 They really just say believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and all your household. 00:26:27.211 --> 00:26:32.960 And so we see this moment where the man is at his wits end. 00:26:32.960 --> 00:26:35.404 He's literally at the end of his life. 00:26:35.404 --> 00:26:36.385 He trusts in Christ. 00:26:36.385 --> 00:26:40.188 Christ changes his future, he begins to follow Jesus. 00:26:40.188 --> 00:26:42.249 He takes this message back to his household. 00:26:42.249 --> 00:26:44.028 His household gets saved. 00:26:44.028 --> 00:26:52.173 And so this awesome word, oikos I want to challenge our listeners to think about your oikos. 00:26:52.993 --> 00:26:53.614 Who are they? 00:26:53.614 --> 00:26:59.517 And you know, we can always just say, yes, the people I live with, my household, the people that I live with. 00:26:59.517 --> 00:27:07.900 Well, it's really, if you're thinking about it, God has put you in places of influence. 00:27:07.900 --> 00:27:21.048 You have these relationships that you have influence over, and then you know, how do you want to influence these? 00:27:21.048 --> 00:27:23.354 Well, this lesson of oikos can be really applied to wherever you are in life. 00:27:23.374 --> 00:27:24.457 Your family, yes, but think about it. 00:27:24.457 --> 00:27:26.162 Your oikos goes out to your family. 00:27:26.162 --> 00:27:28.189 Your oikos can go out to your work. 00:27:28.189 --> 00:27:30.232 Your oikos is in your school. 00:27:30.232 --> 00:27:32.838 Your oikos is in your group of friends. 00:27:32.838 --> 00:27:37.093 This is your household and in our household. 00:27:37.093 --> 00:27:47.342 We need to identify, in our household, who are those that are far from God, and let's begin praying for those people. 00:27:47.342 --> 00:27:49.226 Let's begin praying for those people. 00:27:49.226 --> 00:27:56.416 Let's begin to ask God to work in their hearts and life and to use us to share the message of the gospel to these people.
