repentance that we're going through. 00:16:57.533 --> 00:17:07.258 You know that keeps recurring in our student ministry and in my own personal life this theme of repentance keeps coming up, and so I want to keep with that. 00:17:07.258 --> 00:17:27.438 This morning we're going to be in Luke, chapter 5, starting in verse 27, and it's how Jesus calls Levi, and Levi was a tax collector, and so we're going to read that this morning and then we're going to kind of unpack a little bit of what it means. 00:17:27.438 --> 00:17:28.805 So in verse 27, chapter 5 of the Gospel of Luke. 00:17:28.805 --> table with him, and the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples saying why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? 00:17:54.199 --> 00:18:07.532 And Jesus answered them those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick I have not come to call the righteous, but the sinners to repentance, all right. 00:18:07.532 --> 00:18:11.719 So Jesus is give me a little extra, we'll call it good. 00:19:19.464 --> 00:19:39.228 And so they took bribes, and you could tell by their lavish lifestyle they were getting money from somewhere, and so the tax collectors were wealthy and what was important to them was money over, you know, allegiance to their nation allegiance to their people. 00:19:39.268 --> 00:19:46.769 Yeah, money was the most important, and so they were just generally seen and were corrupt people. 00:19:46.769 --> 00:19:54.519 But we see Jesus come on the scene and Jesus, as you know and as our listeners know, jesus changes everything. 00:19:54.519 --> 00:19:58.550 So Jesus, he calls Levi and says follow me. 00:19:58.550 --> 00:20:00.756 And it doesn't say anything else. 00:20:00.756 --> 00:20:07.565 All it simply says is Levi rose and followed Jesus, so he left everything. 00:20:07.565 --> 00:20:10.368 Levi left everything and followed him. 00:20:20.315 --> 00:20:22.503 And so when we see this moment of repentance in Levi's life, we have this definition of repentance. 00:20:22.503 --> 00:20:27.240 Is that you just like, oh yeah, just stop sinning, right, just stop sinning, repent, stop sinning. 00:20:27.240 --> 00:20:37.980 That is great if it is like, possible, right, if okay, like if I were to tell people you just got to stop sinning and then you're good. 00:20:37.980 --> 00:20:42.875 Well, stopping sinning is like a form of works. 00:20:42.875 --> 00:20:45.279 If we leave it there, all right. 00:20:45.279 --> 00:20:57.763 If we abstain from sinning, thinking that's what God wants, then it's going to leave you empty-handed and not known by Jesus, all right. 00:20:57.763 --> 00:21:04.058 And so what Jesus is doing is he's yes, he's calling Levi away from his old life. 00:21:04.058 --> 00:21:07.204 He's like calling him away from his corruptness, his sin. 00:21:07.204 --> 00:21:12.365 Say let go of that, let go of the world, let go of what entices you, Turn away from that. 00:21:12.365 --> 00:21:14.176 But he calls him to himself. 00:21:14.176 --> 00:21:15.940 All right. 00:21:15.940 --> 00:21:25.968 So if Jesus calls us to anything, you know, we kind of live in this culture where we mystify the calling of Jesus. 00:21:25.968 --> 00:21:31.296 Jesus, throughout his ministry he called people just to himself. 00:21:31.296 --> 00:21:35.397 And so that's what Jesus called Levi to. 00:21:35.397 --> 00:21:37.839 He said call, come and follow me. 00:21:37.839 --> 00:21:40.760 And Levi left everything in his repentance. 00:21:40.760 --> 00:21:44.262 We see that he left everything and followed Jesus. 00:21:44.262 --> 00:21:56.368 And then the next couple of lines said that Levi made him a great feast in his house and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with him. 00:21:56.429 --> 00:22:02.632 So we see not just Levi, the act of repentance, but we see the fruit of repentance. 00:22:02.632 --> 00:22:10.381 Like Jesus comes into his circle, jesus comes into his house. 00:22:10.381 --> 00:22:12.346 He invites Jesus into his most sacred space. 00:22:12.346 --> 00:22:12.988 It's his house. 00:22:12.988 --> 00:22:14.901 He invites Jesus in. 00:22:14.901 --> 00:22:18.241 And not only does he invite Jesus in, he invites everybody. 00:22:18.241 --> 00:22:19.926 He knows all the tax collectors. 00:22:19.926 --> 00:22:22.564 He's like man, I'm going to get all these people following Jesus. 00:22:22.564 --> 00:22:28.275 And so he invites his most corrupt acquaintances, his most corrupt connections. 00:22:28.275 --> 00:22:36.845 He invites the darkest sinners to come into his house to surround Jesus, in hopes that they are changed as well, that they can find new life. 00:22:36.845 --> 00:22:40.403 They don't have to be, you know, the armpit of society anymore. 00:22:40.403 --> 00:22:47.041 You know, they are the stink of society because of how they live their life and chose what to do. 00:22:47.041 --> 00:22:54.178 And Levi, who aka is Matthew, he's like come on, guys, we don't have to live like this anymore. 00:22:54.178 --> 00:22:59.237 I found Jesus and he changes everything, and so there's fruit in his repentance. 00:22:59.237 --> 00:23:11.368 It's not just this act I'm going to stop sinning, it's I'm letting, I'm turning away from my sin, I'm turning to Jesus, and the fruit of it is like I'm bringing people into the kingdom with me. 00:23:11.368 --> 00:23:16.606 And so we see the fruit of repentance in Levi's life. 00:23:17.755 --> 00:23:23.305 And so my question is what is true repentance? 00:23:23.305 --> 00:23:25.915 What is it Like? 00:23:25.915 --> 00:23:27.201 Is it just stopping sin? 00:23:27.201 --> 00:23:34.125 No, I think what true repentance is is an acknowledgement. 00:23:34.125 --> 00:23:35.829 It's an ownership. 00:23:35.829 --> 00:23:44.641 It's taking ownership of what you are Like I'm a sinner and there's nothing I can do in and of myself to change that about me. 00:23:44.641 --> 00:23:46.743 And so I'm going. 00:23:47.305 --> 00:23:54.298 True repentance is more so, not just a stopping of sin, but it's an acknowledgement and understanding of what I am. 00:23:54.298 --> 00:24:15.029 I'm a sinner, I'm a slave to sin, I'm powerless to save myself, and so repentance is, yes, realizing is acknowledging that, acknowledging what God already knows about you and turning to Him, turning to Jesus as central focal point in my life from here on out. 00:24:15.029 --> 00:24:23.387 Yes, I'm going to fall, yes, I'm going to stumble, but Jesus is the prize. 00:24:23.387 --> 00:24:29.167 And if we turn away from our sin, we have to turn towards something, and that something is Jesus. 00:24:29.167 --> 00:24:32.785 So Jesus is our focal point from here on out. 00:24:32.785 --> 00:24:40.175 So, with that said, if Jesus is the object of our repentance, we turn away from our sin, turn to Jesus. 00:24:43.041 --> 00:24:46.469 It's not just, we take repentance as just this one-time thing. 00:24:47.154 --> 00:24:49.180 Right, it's this one-time thing in our life. 00:24:49.279 --> 00:25:04.065 No, in Matthew 3, 8, john the Baptist, when he came baptizing people, he warned the Pharisees and the religious leaders, called them a brood of vipers and he said bear fruit in keeping with repentance, all right. 00:25:04.105 --> 00:25:19.044 So in my personal life and this is where we'll finish, and this is the challenge that I'm going to issue our listeners this morning is, in our life, true repentance is not a one-time thing, it is a daily thing. 00:25:19.044 --> 00:25:24.180 It is, you know, jesus tells us to take up our cross daily and follow him. 00:25:24.180 --> 00:25:33.748 And then in John the Baptist, he says he warns the Pharisees, he says you brood of vipers, and he warned them bear fruit in keeping with repentance. 00:25:33.748 --> 00:26:02.901 So in my life, when I'm living in the mountaintop or when I'm down in the valley, like the thing that brings me to reality of who I am, where I am, whose I am, is preaching the gospel to myself daily, reminding myself that Jesus, the Son of God, loved me, he lived the perfect life, he died a sinner's death, he was nailed to a cross, was in the ground for three days and rose from the dead. 00:26:02.901 --> 00:26:06.645 And that brings me back to reality. 00:26:06.645 --> 00:26:10.566 It's knowing Jesus, being known by Him. 00:26:10.566 --> 00:26:15.105 Preach the gospel to myself daily, follow Jesus. 00:26:24.215 --> 00:26:33.689 You know, we often listen to these stories in the Bible and sometimes I catch myself thinking of some of these stories as fiction. 00:26:33.689 --> 00:26:37.680 And you have to remind yourself these are things that really happened. 00:26:37.680 --> 00:26:50.125 Imagine a guy, a prophet, the son of man coming into your house and saying drop everything you're doing right now and just leave and come with me. 00:26:50.125 --> 00:26:55.733 How many of us would have the discipline to actually do that? 00:26:56.315 --> 00:26:56.454 Right. 00:26:56.474 --> 00:26:59.304 Because I can honestly say I don't know that I would. 00:26:59.684 --> 00:27:09.683 Yeah, and that's the kind of thing is like God activate whatever faith in my heart and mind, activate whatever faith it takes to do that, because man.
