00:08:39.759 So we've been working through the covenants. 00:08:39.840 --> 00:08:50.399 Uh, we've looked at the Adamic covenant, we've looked at the Abrahamic covenant, and then um tonight or today we're gonna look at the Mosaic covenant. 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:53.919 Call it the Mosaic covenant because it was given to Moses. 00:08:54.320 --> 00:09:10.000 Um we find really that covenant in Exodus, Exodus chapters 19 through chapter 19 through chapter 24, uh, we see that covenant, and there's some the a few things that we see uh in this in this covenant. 00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:14.960 First, really in chapter 19 and 20, we see the ceremony of the covenant. 00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:26.559 In chapter 19, verses 1 through 6, he says, And on the third new moon, after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. 00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:30.159 They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai. 00:09:30.399 --> 00:09:34.080 They encamped in the wilderness, there Israel encamped before the mountain. 00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:37.759 Now in verse three, we kind of get into what the covenant is. 00:09:37.919 --> 00:09:52.960 While Moses went up to God, the Lord called out of the mountain, saying, Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel, you yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagle's wings and brought you to myself. 00:09:53.200 --> 00:10:08.799 Now, therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all of the earth is mine, and you shall be and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. 00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:12.639 These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel. 00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:25.360 So that's the covenant you really go through and see in the next few verses how Israel accepts the covenant, and then God consecrates the covenant uh by calling Moses up on the mountain. 00:10:25.519 --> 00:10:34.720 Um, and you see God descend on the mountain with thunder and lightning and clouds and all of those things, and you see Moses go in. 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:40.080 But when Moses first gets there, God says, Hold on, Moses, you need to go back down and warn the people. 00:10:40.240 --> 00:10:44.320 If they even just touch this mountain, they're gonna die because I'm a holy God. 00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:45.919 They can't come up right now. 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:52.480 And so he goes back and warns them, and then you enter into chapter 20, where God gives the Ten Commandments. 00:10:52.639 --> 00:11:17.519 Um, and then you see some um how the people are become terrified in chapter 20 because of all the things that are happening, and then God uh they give them the rest of the laws, and then there's a confirmation of this covenant at the in chapter 24, and you see Moses come down with the two the two tabnets, but tablets, but here's the here's the promise. 00:11:17.600 --> 00:11:19.919 And so he the God makes the covenant. 00:11:20.080 --> 00:11:24.720 If you obey this law, you here's what's gonna happen. 00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:26.720 And here's the promises that he makes. 00:11:26.799 --> 00:11:37.279 And we just read it, but just to remind you, in chapter 19, verse 5, he says, Therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my command commandments, here's the promise promise. 00:11:37.759 --> 00:11:45.919 You shall be my treasured possession, so they'll be his treasured possession among all peoples, for the earth is mine. 00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:50.720 You shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. 00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:54.240 These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel. 00:11:54.399 --> 00:11:59.840 So they're gonna be a prized possession, a royal priest, so meaning they're gonna have access to God. 00:11:59.919 --> 00:12:03.840 They're gonna be a holy nation set apart from all the other nations. 00:12:03.919 --> 00:12:14.559 So all and they're gonna be, because they're set apart from the other nations, as they're gonna be priests of the other nations, so the other nations should be able to look to them and say, This is how we worship God. 00:12:14.879 --> 00:12:20.879 Over on in chapter 23, he talks about he is gonna defend them from all their enemies and all of these things. 00:12:20.960 --> 00:12:23.360 So that's the old covenant, all right. 00:12:24.639 --> 00:12:28.320 So we see Christ really fulfilling this covenant. 00:12:28.399 --> 00:12:31.759 Last week, when we talked about the Abrahamic covenant, we went to Galatians. 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:39.360 We're really in the same passage of Galatians uh today to see how Christ fulfilled the old covenant. 00:12:39.519 --> 00:12:45.360 But in in Galatians chapter 3, verse 19, he says, Why then the law? 00:12:45.600 --> 00:12:57.039 It was added because of transgressions until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 00:12:57.200 --> 00:13:01.360 Now, an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one. 00:13:01.519 --> 00:13:02.480 Now, listen to this. 00:13:02.720 --> 00:13:05.600 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? 00:13:05.759 --> 00:13:06.960 Certainly not. 00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:13.679 For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:24.639 But the scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:37.440 So what the law did is it it was it imprisoned everybody to sin, so that those who believe in Jesus could be freed. 00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:41.120 Well, well, how does Jesus do that? 00:13:41.679 --> 00:13:54.960 Down in verse 27 for as many as you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 00:13:55.120 --> 00:13:59.679 And if you are Christ, then you're Abraham's offspring, heirs according to the promise. 00:13:59.840 --> 00:14:08.480 So what Christ does is he justifies us, and here's how he kept the law perfectly, he was the one who did that. 00:14:09.039 --> 00:14:17.440 He died on the cross, taking the punishment that deserved, that that our sins deserved, that we were imprisoned to. 00:14:17.840 --> 00:14:23.279 In the old covenant, he even set up ways because he knew they would disobey it, disobey it. 00:14:23.360 --> 00:14:30.639 He set up ways for them to um atone for their sins through the blood of bulls and goats and sacrifices. 00:14:30.799 --> 00:14:39.919 But we read on Easter Sunday how that never really accomplished justification for us because they had to keep offering them. 00:14:40.159 --> 00:14:49.840 But Christ, when he offered his sacrifice once and for all time, he sat down at the right hand of God because his sacrifice appeased the wrath of God. 00:14:50.080 --> 00:15:04.799 He took the punishment that we deserved, and then he places on us his righteousness, the righteousness that is given to those who believe, who have trusted him in faith and repentance. 00:15:04.879 --> 00:15:06.720 And so then here's the promise. 00:15:07.360 --> 00:15:13.039 Remember the promises of the old covenant: treasured possession, royal priesthood, holy nation. 00:15:13.360 --> 00:15:21.120 In first Peter chapter 2, verses 7 through 9, or actually just start in verse 9. 00:15:21.360 --> 00:15:26.080 Here's what Peter says about those who have believed in Christ. 00:15:26.320 --> 00:15:26.639 Okay. 00:15:27.600 --> 00:15:45.440 You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possess possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into this marvelous light. 00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:49.360 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people. 00:15:49.519 --> 00:15:54.559 Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 00:15:54.799 --> 00:16:05.279 And so what he is saying is those who have believed, you were not a people, you were, you were, um, you had not received mercy. 00:16:05.679 --> 00:16:13.120 But when you believe in Christ, you receive the mercy that he gives us on the cross, that he died for us, that he arose to save us. 00:16:13.840 --> 00:16:24.879 We become God's people, and in becoming God's people, we as those who believe become his treasured possession, his royal priesthood, a holy nation. 00:16:25.120 --> 00:16:38.320 That happens because Christ fulfilled the Mosaic law perfectly and justified us, gave us his righteousness, and so we see fulfillment of that old covenant in Jesus. 00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:56.080 And I don't want it to come across that way, but I'm curious about your thoughts. 00:16:56.879 --> 00:17:18.319 The children of Israel saw so many amazing things, and you mentioned uh in today that they were terrified, and yet it they still screwed up a lot and it's just puzzling for for the for a culture today that doesn't see some of the things uh visually that they saw. 00:17:18.720 --> 00:17:32.960 Yeah, we don't see those things, but but at the same time, Mark, I mean we don't we maybe we don't see God come on the mountain and give the covenant, but we see God do some incredible things. 00:17:33.680 --> 00:17:45.119 I mean, the the the act of salvation that is a miracle in and of itself that God would take us and and redeem us. 00:17:45.599 --> 00:17:52.720 It's it's a it's an act of God, and and sometimes you even see those testimonies of people who had reached the lowest of lows, right? 00:17:52.799 --> 00:17:54.000 And then God saved them. 00:17:54.079 --> 00:18:12.799 But even for those who didn't like I used to think I didn't have a testimony because I didn't drink and do all the things, but but he took me a sinner and saved me, and it becomes a thing, God, but what have you done for me lately? 00:18:34.160 --> 00:18:37.839 And yeah, I give the Israelites a hard time, I really do. 00:18:38.079 --> 00:18:45.039 But when we're honest, when we're honest with ourselves, though, like we we do a lot of the same things. 00:18:45.440 --> 00:18:48.960 They saw some terrifying things in the old testament. 00:18:49.279 --> 00:18:59.519 I mean, even the things that God allowed to happen in Egypt, they were witnessing it, they knew what was going on. 00:19:00.079 --> 00:19:18.720 And if you walked through the sea and then saw the water swallow up the pursuers, and then Moses goes up on the mountain and you build a bunch of idols, you're toying with something you've seen firsthand you should not be toying with. mean, well, I just I just think we we don't recognize the depravity of ourselves. 00:19:34.319 --> 00:19:39.680 Um I don't think they recognize it in themselves, but I don't think we do either. 00:19:39.839 --> 00:19:46.880 How how easily we turn from God um at the slightest little go wrong. 00:19:46.960 --> 00:19:52.000 And and and for them, I mean the the the go-wrong wasn't long. 00:19:52.079 --> 00:19:57.440 I mean, so from the Red Sea to Mount Sinai, they estimate about three months. 00:19:57.599 --> 00:20:07.599 And in that three months, like I know one time at least they didn't have water and they cried out and said, God, we we should have just Moses, why'd you lead us out here to die? 00:20:07.680 --> 00:20:08.720 We should have died in Egypt. 00:20:08.799 --> 00:20:10.480 Well, God brings them water, right? 00:20:10.640 --> 00:20:16.000 And then they they're hungry and they cry out for food and they say, We should have just died in Egypt. 00:20:16.079 --> 00:20:17.680 Why'd you bring us out here to die? 00:20:17.759 --> 00:20:29.279 And man, all that happened in less than three months, and so now they're at they're out at Sinai and going, Oh my stars, give us a God that we can worship, and we'll say he's the God that brought us out of Egypt. 00:20:44.000 --> 00:20:51.680 So you we think that wasn't very long, but and I'm not even gonna speak into anybody else's life, I'll speak in mine. 00:20:53.359 --> 00:21:11.599 I have gone from mountaintop experience with God to almost the next day my truck breaks down, and I'm mad at God because how dare than we want to go, keep us longer than we want to pay, and make us pay more than we want to pay. 00:21:27.680 --> 00:21:37.359 And it it blinds our eyes to the goodness of God and and what he can do.
