In this special episode of The Transactional Analysis Podcast, hosts Matt and John pay tribute to Dr. Mark Widdowson, a highly respected Transactional Analyst and a great contributor to the field, who sadly passed away in August of this year.

Dr. Widdowson was a guest on one of our earlier episodes, where he shared his deep knowledge and passion for psychotherapy and Transactional Analysis (TA). His influence on both the TA community and on each of us personally cannot be overstated.

In this episode, we honour his legacy by sharing reflections on his impact and by revisiting his powerful Research Award acceptance speech at the 2017 WTAC (World TA Conference) in Berlin, where he was presented with an award for his research on the effectiveness of TA Psychotherapy.

Dr. Widdowson’s dedication to TA research, particularly in the area of depression, continues to shape the field. His work brought significant insights into evidence-based psychotherapy, and he was known for making complex theories accessible and practical for therapists. 

His energy, humour, and commitment to improving the lives of others were felt by all who knew him, and he has left an indelible mark on the TA community.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Widdowson speaks with his characteristic wit and passion, discussing the importance of research in TA, his journey in the field, and the future of TA as an evidence-based practice. Trudi Newton received the 2023 Eric Berne Memorial Award for her work in establishing a new metaperspective that reframes transactional analysis as positive psychology. For this episode, John and I had the privilege of travelling to Dublin for the ITAA and EATA international trainers meeting in July.  Our guest is Peter Rudolph, so we were very fortunate to meet Peter and record this fascinating conversation in person.

Peter is a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst in the Counselling field and works from his private office in Northwest Germany.

We talk about his work as a TA Counsellor, transforming the core of the 'I'm okay, you're okay' concept to a universal okayness, and shifting TA from a psychotherapeutic approach to a psychosocial health approach, integrating a political perspective.

In this episode, our panel discuss the question, "What Does the Future of TA Look Like Across the Four Fields?".

Our guests were: Deborah Robinson TSTA(O), Karen Minikin TSTA(P), Nicole Lenner PTSTA(C), and Paul Robinson PTSTA(E).

The discussion took place at the Annual UK Association for Transactional Analysis (UKATA) Conference and was recorded in front of a live audience of attendees (a first for us!). The theme of the conference was: Transactional Analysis! One theory applied in four fields.

Transactional Analysis, or TA, is a psychosocial model that covers much of the human experience. Though it was initially only applied only in Psychotherapy, TA now has four fields; these are Counselling, Educational, Organisational and Psychotherapy.
