Welcome back to another episode of the lethal library. We're happy if you are still here and listening. We have a really good case for you. According to Dani. if you're new here, this is a true crime podcast. We focus on death row cases in the Pacific Northwest. And we also like to have a cocktail while we do this. So we like to chat about it. Dani does a ton of research, finds a ton of details that we don't usually see put elsewhere, and she's going to tell us about this case.
DaniI'm going to be telling you, about Azad Abdullah, he was capitalizing on some unfortunate things happening in America. after 9 11, and, trying to justify his crimes, uh, and, and it's heartbreaking. He, he, it's, it's a heartbreaking story, um, so let's, let's get into it. Let's
Stephanieget into this.
Dani2002 in Boise, Idaho. On October 5th, the home of Angie and Azad Abdullah was consumed by fire. Angie, 37, and four children were in the home when the fire broke out. Her neighbor, 71 year old Ed Kirchensteiner, yes, did that. Ed had kicked in the door and entered the home to rescue their three week old son, Malik. He struggled through the smoke following the cries of the baby. Another neighbor had joined Ed in the rescue. Brian Wright. Brian had taken the baby from Ed, and Ed re entered the house. Ed was screaming out Angie's name, but was unable to locate her. He had to leave the home due to heavy smoke. He was in there just He
Stephaniereally tried.
DaniA 71 year old, and he was a pastor or a minister of his local church. He was
StephanieAnd just shouting for her. That is so heartbreaking.
DaniAnd, uh, knew the family well, and knew that there was children In that home, the firefighters later found 19 month old Naeem in the backyard wrapped in a blanket.
StephanieWhoa. Okay.
DaniThe neighbors had been woken by Angie's 9 year old daughter Alyssa at 2 a. m. She and her friend, who had been staying the night, rang the doorbell. When the neighbors answered, she told them her house was on fire and I've got, quote, I've got to get my mommy out. Oh my god, dude.
StephanieCan you imagine? No, I cannot imagine. At nine? And what a stud Ed
Daniis.
StephanieHe kicked in the
Danifricking back door. He kicked in the French doors.
StephanieEd and Brian trying.
DaniStellar neighbors. Let me tell you a little bit about Angie. Angie Abdullah had converted to Islam around 1999 after her first husband had passed away. She was working at the Boise Refuge Center helping refugees get, get settled here. She was drawn to the religion because of their focus on family. She even traveled to Turkey and researched the religion by reading and speaking with others before making her decision to convert. Wow. Yeah, so she, she was, she was in it. She was curious, and to travel over there and, and spend her, she knew, you know, she really wanted to make sure this was the right choice for her, and, and, she really was happy with, with that religion, yeah.
StephanieWell, and she clearly worked a lot in the community. There's a huge refugee population from all over in Idaho, so that's really cool that she also is giving back to the community. Yeah.
DaniYeah, and then to travel over there and not just speak to the refugees that are here, but also speak to people that are, you know, practicing that religion in other parts of the world to get a better rounded understanding about it. Angie and her husband, Azad Abdullah, were very, very prominent in the Muslim community here.
StephanieReally?
DaniSo much so that they had spoken with the Boise Airport officers after 9 11. Sensitivity training that was requested by the airport police chief. The couple went and shared their experiences after 9 11 and, and spoke with the airport police about what was appropriate, what was, okay for them to, how to search a woman appropriately, meaning like she could remove her head, her head, wrap if requested, head dress if they requested, but her husband needed to be present and just to be, you know, just to understand that that's how that religion is. And so it was a really good thing. and they were, awarded the spirit of Idaho award by Senator Mike Crapo, in the spring of 2002 for just teaching the community about their religion.
StephanieWell, and I'm sure you and I remember well, I mean around here and all across the country, it was not a fun environment at all for anyone who even appeared to be, following the Muslim religion or wearing like a hijab or anything that looked like that. There was cases everywhere of people just being disrespected and discriminated against a lot of
Danidiscrimination for that after 9 11 Yeah, there was a lot of fear and Really, and I believe unfounded fear. It was just all directed So I think it's awesome that they They were trying to do
Stephanietheir part. Right.
DaniTrying to do their part so everybody could understand. Because if I was, if something in my religion was not okay, and I was being asked by the police to do something, I would have a really, how disrespectful. Like, So I think it's good, they're just teaching, especially, you know, the airport, they're seeing all different kinds of people coming in and out, how to be respectful of people. So, kudos to them.
StephanieYeah, 100%.
DaniWell, fuck Abdullah.
StephanieFor a while, kudos. And clearly, I know this is going a place. So kudos to Angie. good job, Angie.
Daniinvestigators believe the fire started in the garage. The home was 90 percent consumed when the fire crews arrived. A friend of the family. Yeah, it was done. a friend of the family, Farquan Mahmood, said Angie's bedroom was close to the back door of the home. He didn't understand why she didn't get out of the fire. He's like, her bedroom was in the back, she could have easily gotten out. Uh, Farquan said that he could not think of another woman who had done more for the Muslim community here in Boise.
StephanieOh, my God.
DaniHe also stated, like I said, like it would have been easy for Angie to leave through the back door, but she was probably looking for her Children.
StephanieWell, now that kind of makes a little bit more sense with maybe the baby to me. Now I'm thinking maybe she tried to put the baby out and go back in. I'm just spiraling on this.
DaniHe and his family had had dinner with Angie and her Children on Thursday, just two nights before the fire. Angie's husband, Azad Abdullah, was out of town to Salt Lake City, Utah. He and his five year old son, Radir, made the trip to purchase kosher meat. So, I'm telling you, 25 years ago, they were not finding any kosher meat. Oh,
Stephanieno. Here. No.
DaniSo, it's very reasonable, that they would have to drive five hours away.
StephanieWow.
DaniTo go get some, to go buy, kosher meat. The police were calling the fire suspicious. And there's things that they're saying is suspicious, but wasn't released to the public why they thought it was suspicious.
StephanieSure. Because a lot of times they don't release all the details because that helps them know if someone confesses, if they really did it, or just if someone knows a certain detail that was never released and they said they weren't there. It's a good way to catch them
Daniand they will. The fire was only one week after someone threw two bricks through the windows of the Boise Islamic Center. And Farquan, the center's education director received a threatening call just the day before the fire. Other threats were made at the mosque where a man yelled racial slurs as they were leaving prayer service. Police are not ruling out a hate crime. Within a few days of the incident, the police announced someone had murdered Angie before setting the house on fire, trying to conceal the crime.
StephanieOh my gosh.
DaniSo they're two days out, they're like, uh, nope, this isn't right. She did not smoke, because at first they thought it was smoke inhalation. Right. Um, there were reports that they thought that she had succumbed to the smoke inhalation looking for her children. Right. Which absolutely would make sense. She's a devoted mother But within a couple of days her body
Stephanietold the truth.
DaniThe body Absolutely told the truth. Police chief Schnebly I do
Stephanielike that name.
DaniStated that Angie was killed in In a bedroom, but it was not her bedroom. It was one of the children's bedroom that her body was found in. There were no signs of forced entry or a struggle. Investigators had determined that gas was used as an accelerant in the garage and a gas can was found in the home's driveway. Sus.
StephanieOopsie. I feel like, what, no matter who's committing the crime, they'd probably take that with you if you're got your wits about ya, but anyway.
DaniSome people apparently don't have their murdering wits about them.
StephanieNo, not at all.
DaniAnd the police determined that no evidence had been linked to the previous threats. Made to the Islamic Center. So they, they looked at all that and was like, no, no, this is not panning out. Oh, and there's a gas can in the driveway.
StephanieWell, and I'm sure that there were threats. Like, I remember that time and I think I remember hearing about the bricks and stuff now that you've said it. I feel like I remember hearing about that.
DaniOh, I'm not saying that those things didn't happen. I, they absolutely were happening. Unfortunately. The climate was
Stephanieout of
Danicontrol. Yeah, the Yes, a lot of unfortunate discrimination, um, going on. And so, at first glance, seems reasonable. It
Stephaniedoes.
DaniIt does seem like that would be a possibility. Abdullah declined to comment on his wife's death, but released a statement stating that, quote, Angie was a great mother, a great wife, a great American, and a great Muslim. He asked for privacy, but appreciated the love and support from the community. He said, quote, For the person or persons responsible for my wife's murder, I hope that I and my children witness your fate in this life.
StephanieWhich all sounds very much like, a devoted husband putting together a statement that is trying to be calm and professional, yet also A loving husband should also be like, we're going to find out who did this.
DaniWe're going to get you. And I hope you're miserable.
StephanieSo all seeming somewhat on the outside, like this is what that could be.
DaniThe police brought Abdullah in to interview him. The police requested the 25 year olds DNA sample and to examine his body. Abdullah stated he was in Utah when the fire occurred, but the police have been unable to confirm his alibi. They told him, they are trying to exclude him. And this was just a routine procedure. I just have to say my two cents here. Tell me. Do not talk to the cops. I mean, in this case, it's good, but still, if a police person tells me it's a routine procedure, I'm like, you're a fat mouth.
StephanieAnd there's millions of cases that show that that's true. Right. Right.
DaniRight.
StephanieYeah.
Daniwitnesses Abdullah in Salt Lake City, Saturday afternoon, but the police can't confirm if he was there on Saturday morning. Friends stated that Abdullah had left the Boise area on Friday. So just to kind of give you, for people who aren't familiar with this area, it's a five and a half, six hour drive. Yeah. From Boise to Salt Lake. Yeah, I'd say. Maybe even shorter if you're hitting those prime 80 mile an hour stretches across the desert. If you've got a little bit of a lead foot, you could cut some minutes off that for sure. Yeah, well, we do a solid 85. Well, and it is the speed limit is 80. So it's like a smidge over. 84 and a half officer. two weeks, about two weeks later on October 18th, Abdullah was arrested on charges of first degree murder, arson, and attempted murder. Oof. Remember, there was four children in that house. Yeah. So he One wasn't even his. It was his daughter's friend. Well, his stepdaughter's friend.
StephanieOkay, thank you for clearing that up because I, I remembered you saying that his son went with him.
DaniSo they, Angie and Abdullah had, there was four children between them. Alyssa, the nine year old, was hers from a previous marriage before her husband passed. He had a five year old son, Reardon, that had went to Salt Lake. They had a 19 month old son. and a three week old son. Oh my gosh. Okay, so, but the reason there was four children in the house is because Alyssa Because it's a
Stephaniefriend. on
Dania,
Stephanieon a Friday night had a friend stay the night. And I think you said that, but I just needed that recap. But it just, it's a lot
Danito, so I think it was a good clarifying point just to kind of lay the children out. during the investigation, they discover receipts. Receipts? Literally. Children with receipts. Literal receipts. One month before Angie died, she had met with an attorney to discuss a divorce. She also had hired a private investigator in 2000 to follow Abdullah because she believed he was having an affair. Angie had told the attorney she feared her husband would try to take the children out of the country if she asked him for a divorce.
StephanieWhich is a very real fear. It's a
Danivery scary thing. I was like, oh, yeah, that is definitely a thing. I have, I remember seeing cases about that.
Stephaniea really popular one is Jonas and is it Sophie Turner? Yes. So there's, I mean, that's of course a very rich and famous couple, but now they have to split custody. Over the Atlantic Ocean.
DaniMm hmm.
StephanieI mean, sometimes it's tough getting your kid to your spouse's house the next town over. Could you imagine? Yeah, so it's A very real fear. Yeah, a real threat. Or disappearing in the other country.
DaniAnd just, because people will Because, you know, she was from America, probably bad, whatever story that he had decided to tell his family and friends and they would have just hid them, gone. So, a real, a
Stephaniereal fear. Of course. A real fear. So, she was already planning and with a private investigator, I'm proud of her for making that leap because,
DaniA lot of women don't and they'll just sit there and consume themselves with doubt and worry and worry and like oh, no Oh, maybe oh, no Yeah, and so have a
Stephanieprofessional get it done Absolutely That's their job. Stimulate the local economy, folks.
DaniGet a PI. So, Abdullah is, this is his alibi to the police. Okay. He said he left the Boise area on Friday and arrived in Salt Lake around 4 in the afternoon along with his son, Radir.
StephanieOkay.
DaniHe checked into his motel, went to a local mosque to pray, purchased some gas, Drove around Salt Lake for about 90 minutes and then returned to his hotel. He stated he was in bed by 9 9 30 and woke up the next morning around 7. The police said Abdullah did leave the Boise area on Friday. They concur. Cool. And arrived in Salt Lake in the afternoon. They also agreed. He checked in, when he checked into a motel, a witness saw Abdullah with a small boy. His son, a woman, and a small girl. Interesting. After he checked in, credit card receipts showed he purchased a Dracula cape and an Undertaker mask at the local costume store.
StephanieI mean, we're, we're around Halloween, but why are we purchasing this there? Mmmmm. This is suspicious. This is suspicious.
DaniUh huh. He then purchased two gas cans from another store. Uh huh. I love that you left that part for the last. Okay. Cliffhanger. around 8 o'clock on Friday night, Abdullah bought 22. 8 gallons of gas. The police noted that his vehicle only had a 20 gallon gas tank. Where's the gas going? Are we in a
Stephaniegas fight? Like, um Probably in those brand new gas cans he bought. Shiny. Ready, ready for
Danigas anytime. Another witness saw Abdullah in Mountain Home, Idaho around 12. 30am, Saturday morning. Mmm. Mmm. And just to give you an idea, Mountain Home is probably 25, 30 minute drive, 35 maybe? From Boise.
StephanieIf the traffic's good, yeah. I mean, depending on where in Mountain Home, but yeah, you could do it. I'm telling you, this was a stage stop. I'm telling you. That's like the most popular. It's the stage
Danistop. Okay, I'm assuming. It was at
Stephaniethe stage stop. We don't know for a fact, but we know.
DaniCause that's where everybody stops to get gas! Yeah. so he was not, he was sighted not far out of Boise. A little short commute. Yeah. At 1230am.
StephanieCause there's nothing but a quick, there's not many towns between. So the freeway is just, it's the 80 mile an hour. It's fucking desert. Zoom, zoom, zoom. Desert and sagebrush, baby. And a solar farm now, but.
DaniYes there is. And the um, uh.
StephanieWind farms.
DaniThere, there's the wind farms, but there's the, the, the dump out there.
StephanieI don't even know about that.
DaniReally? There's a dump out there.
StephanieSo, as you can see, a very scenic drive. Not really. It's one of the, one of the most boring drives you can have in Idaho. I know that, especially if someone's driving. Some of y'all aren't from here, you might not know, but it's a dull, dull drive. A lot of people take this route to go to Jackpot, which is in Nevada, in the closest gambling town. And it is a dull drive, so, but it's quick, because you can go 80 or 85,
Daniif you're feeling 84 and a half, officer. Yeah. We have a lot of beautiful country in this state.
StephanieThat ain't it. That's not part of it. Mm mm. Nope. It's not. It's, it's a point A to point B situation. For sure.
DaniHe was seen in Salt Lake around 7 a. m. Saturday morning. So he was seen in Mountain Home, Idaho at 1230 a. m. on Saturday morning. Early, early. Early, early. And then back. But he was also seen in in Salt Lake City again at 7 o'clock on Saturday morning, which is Definitely enough time. It's definitely enough time. So
Stephanieinteresting,
Danihe purchased some more gas around 11 a. m. In Salt Lake. He's big gas bill He and his son flew back to Idaho after learning about the fire because family and friends told him he should not drive back You know You just learned that your wife has passed away, your house is burned down, we do not want you driving while you're upset with your son.
StephanieOne, unbeknownst to them, he was probably already very tired from the cross interstate trip that has been going on. Exactly.
DaniBut I mean it makes sense, like his friends and family are like, do not drive back, just get on the soonest plane, just go. Even though it's a five, probably took more time to get through the plane. You know, airport. But still, he should not have been driving his child upset. relax. Yeah, meanwhile we have four Four children without any parent because he's been arrested at this point. So there's four children that have no parent Alyssa's Angie's nine year old daughter From her previous marriage was with Angie's mother. Like that was one and done. Abdullah's five year old son from a previous marriage and the couple's two small sons are in state custody. The Health and Welfare Department stated the goal was to place the boys in the care of Abdullah's parents. This was in the paper. Health and Welfare made a statement. To this fact, Meanwhile, Dua has been arrested for her murder. Mm hmm. I don't understand why Health and Welfare would be like, but we're gonna place all the boys with his family. Okay, the five year old that was from his previous marriage. Yeah. I could, okay, that has nothing to do. Even though Angie had been a stepmom and you know, he knew the family here. I get legally, but the two other boys the two youngest ones One to be still in state custody when there's family fighting for them,
Stephanieright? And I'm sure that this was a tough one for them because, him having one that wasn't Angie's and then them having two together. I know that they always do, or they say that they try to keep kids together, but I can understand how it would be hard having one that wasn't Angie's actual son going to her mom, just because you don't know how all of that situation played out, but I can't imagine just giving them all to his parents, or like, just waiting, especially if a flight risk is a danger, I feel like that is an important factor here. So, this is. And I don't know how I would, if someone tried to put this decision up to me, I don't know.
DaniAnd I also think that, this was never stated anywhere, but I also think that possibly they were taking the religion into account because Angie's family was not Muslim. Yeah. And so they were thinking maybe, I mean, I'm just trying to give it, No, that makes sense. I'm just trying to be gracious. If that's how the
Stephanieboys are being raised and, But I'm still
Danitelling you this is bullshit because you know why? Tell me why. Well, Angie's family was completely outraged and made it publicly known that they were appalled by the department's statement. They were just like, how could you put this in the fucking paper? Like we're trying to get these kids, like, we're trying to work this out as a family. We're trying to figure
Stephaniethings out for the, like, what are we doing with these kids? Our
Danisister, our daughter is dead. We're trying, these kids are hers, a three week old baby?
StephanieYes. I can't believe that she was so. Newly postpartum that is so tragic.
DaniIt'll take nearly three years for the relatives to gain custody of Angie's two younger sons
StephanieReally?
DaniAsinine three fucking years. Yeah, they made statements like I Believe it was Angie's cousin that ended up getting custody of these these boys And you know, she's just like it shouldn't have taken this long. Like they were with great foster parents
StephanieThank goodness, because we know
Danihow hard it can be. They were great people, but why should it take three? Their father is in jail for murdering a family member. Why are those boys in state custody in foster care? Three years. Three fucking years. It's too much.
StephanieThat's way too much.
DaniToo much fucking red tape. Get your shit together, Health and Welfare. It pisses me off when I
Stephanieread that. Health and Welfare either does way too much in the wrong circumstances. Or does completely not enough in the correct circumstances. And I know it's not always. But these are the things that we hear and see and, It's just, this is one of those things where when you get it wrong, it's so incredibly impactful to so many people, children, relatives, parents. When you get it wrong, it's just a, like a ton of bricks.
DaniWell, and when I was researching this, I'm like, I see all this stuff going back and forth, you know, on, on this foster care and I see all this stuff and I'm like, I don't I'm like, well, surely I'm gonna, I'm gonna come up on something where there's some resolution for these children.
StephanieMm hmm.
DaniI was appalled for it to come up three years later. That's a very long time. So, anyway, I was like, what happened to the, like, am I gonna Where are these kids? Yeah, I'm like, am I gonna have to do a way deep, deep, like, deep dive and, and see what I can find? And then all of a sudden it was there three years later in an article. I That they finally got, her family finally got those kids. Anyways, so rant over. It pissed me off.
StephanieIt pisses me off too. And there's great
Danifoster parents and all this stuff. If a family, a blood family, anyway, I'm going to stop. That has a relationship, no, 100%. They should have got those kids ASAP. They should have been like, let's come over and look at your house, let's do a check. Oh, your house is clean and you have food and you're good people, yeah. You can have these children.
StephanieThis is awful.
Daniwell, we, we're in 2004. Two years later, right? Yeah. finally. Justice system is taking its time on this one. So two years later, on September 27th in 2004, the trial finally begins. Abdullah is facing a possible death sentence. The prosecutors claim Abdullah gave Angie a lethal dose of Prozac and then suffocated her. Fun fact, I didn't even think you could overdose on Prozac. I did
Stephanienot know that. I
Danireally had no idea.
StephanieMaybe it just inebriated her or incapacitated her enough to then smother. That is, I don't, you don't hear that one often folks.
Daniprosecutors also said that Abdullah stood to benefit financially from the fire by collection of the insurance money and he had planned to leave the country. That's weird. Angie already knew that. Women are so intuitive. She knew. She, ugh, she, she. And she had already
Stephanietaken so many actions because she knew.
DaniShe knew. Intuition. Women's intuition.
StephanieDon't doubt it.
Danijust two months before the fire, he had taken out an insurance policy on some vending machines in his garage for 50, 000. He's like,
Stephanieactually, I could also get, not just the wife, but these vending machines are guaranteed. Yeah, let's go. Let's up this insurance on these vending machines. How callous and just weird, dude.
DaniWell, let me just tell you what even makes it more weird. Most of the time, when you purchase extra insurance on things that your household insurance does not cover, i. e. your fridge, your clothes, like your personal, standard norm, vending machines would be way outside of that line, right? Oh, for sure. Uh, your, your jewelry is way outside, most of the time is outside of those lines. Those are, so those are things that you would place on a, on a policy that's just for those items. And it's usually for theft and fire. Yeah. And some other, some other causes. But this, this one was just for fire.
StephanieYou're joking. No. And Dani is the insurance queen over here, so she knows about these things and the policies.
DaniSo he's like, no, uh, Mr. Insurance man, I only need this policy
Stephanieif they burn. If someone steals it, I mean, props to them. I'm okay with that. They got me. They got me. They caught me slipping. But if my house burns, which is so rare.
DaniI want paid for those, motherfucker.
StephanieBut yeah, if someone steals them, then that's, that's probably my fault. Probably.
DaniI left the garage open.
StephanieI left my gas can out front.
DaniWhoops. So, it's a very weird policy to have, most of the time you get it, most of the time you're concerned for theft. Mm hmm. And I think vending machines would be hard to lift, but you're thinking like theft of jewelry, theft of guns, like some of those big ticket items that your normal household uh, homeowner's insurance doesn't cover, but now he's like, no, no, no.
StephanieOnly if it burns.
DaniOnly if it burns. Thank you. So, it's proving that he was a cheapskate as well. Yeah. I'm sorry. Don't be suspicious. Don't
Stephaniebudget your murder plot. Like, I'm not trying to give advice to people. I hope you guys understand that when I say shit like this. Is like, I'm not trying to tell you how to do it. It's just so flabbergasting. My flabbers are gasted. That someone will be like, I'm so smart. Let's take out an extra insurance policy only for fire. And for vending machines where he's like, this is this is where I'm gonna get my cash. This is, this is the the big ticket for me. Stop it.
DaniEven the insurance agent was like, the insurance agent was like, thought it was a little weird, but Okay, are you sure you don't want that? They need
Stephanieto be mandatory reporters.
DaniI'm not sure. Truly.
StephanieThis is immediately a red flag.
DaniI mean, the whole point of an insurance guy is to sell. He is a salesman, don't get it wrong.
StephanieTell him, Dani.
DaniUm, but, he did, he even got up, this poor guy, he's like, I thought I was strange. He probably feels like an ass. But, what do you
Stephaniedo? I, this is something where you can't really, like, You would never imagine,
Daniyou would never, this is, if somebody come in and was like, Like, wanting to buy, I don't even know how this would, but somebody wanted to buy insurance. I wouldn't question them about it. That's not, that's not. My job, my job is to make sure that you have appropriate coverage. Yeah. And you know, maybe I could, honestly, I could see this
Stephanielike.
DaniWho's gonna
Stephaniesteal a Atari machine?
DaniExactly. The snack machine.
StephanieWho's stealing that? Tell that to my grandpa who they stole his side by side that was not on a trailer out of his garage. They'll find a way. But, and a safe. I mean, they'll find a way. Where there's a
Daniwill, those damn criminals.
StephanieWell,
Danithere's
Stephaniea will, there's a way. It's like they always only think halfway or for the majority of the time. They're like, they have some concepts of a plan and then they, sorry, it's like this looks good.
Daniyou want a break?
StephanieI think so. I need to refill anyway. I
Daniknow. We've refreshed. Cheers. Vodka, vodka. Dingle, dingle. I saw, I saw, I have to fucking tell you this, I saw, I saw a tiktok and it said a DJ's worst nightmare. Some drunk girl was up dancing on the DJ thing and pulled all of his equipment over, her fucking drunk ass pulled it all over. I'd never go out
Stephanieagain. I'd become a nun.
DaniThat's Prosecutors claimed Abdullah had told a friend that he was moving to South Africa and had urged Angie to put their home on the market just days before the fire. And he did. He really, they had a real estate friend, there was no contract signed and the friend testified, um, that it wasn't ethical but very common to go ahead and just put that for sale sign out in the yard without a contract. Mmm. Then you know, well, especially if you're friends, I'd be like, you know, just do
Stephanieit
Daniwe're gonna sell and Angie was like We're not selling.
StephanieOh
DaniSo there's some contention there,
Stephanieespecially with her the month prior being like Something's fishy. and also the extra woman. Who is she is what I'm excited to find out.
DaniYou're gonna be disappointed.
StephanieOkay. I hope you're ready for nothing.
DaniThe defense is claiming Angie may have committed suicide or died from an accidental overdose.
StephanieBullshit. Women don't choose Prozac as their overdose.
DaniI was a three week old baby. Shut the fuck, shut the fuck up.
StephanieI know postpartum is a thing but if she already, if we've already got the receipts for the private investigator and the thinking that there's an affair. And she
Daniwasn't depressed. She was probably stressed out because she knew her husband was a fucking dirtbag. But she was still very involved in her community. She just went over to family friends and had dinner.
StephanieYeah,
Daniher daughter was having a friend's birthday. friends day, the night there was no, there was no, I'm just saying, when I'm not feeling, up to par mentally, there's no
Stephanieguess. We're not having the friends over. We're not
Danihaving friends over, kiddo. I'm not
Stephaniegoing to a neighbor dinner. No. I am being a hermit recluse. You won't hear from me.
DaniFuck that defense. Fuck that defense. I just hate when they cop out like that and try to make somebody Something that they absolutely were not. Absolutely. I do not. Very frustrating. Do not believe that that was the case at all. No. I think she was nervous and scared and knew that this dirty motherfucker was going to try to steal her children, and had been sleeping with God knows who. And, that is so, right, like, their religion, like, you're
StephanieNo, that's not okay. It's a
Danibad no no for Uh, to have an affair. Yes?
StephanieA hundred percent.
DaniIt's like totally I'm not
Stephaniean expert, but I know a bit. And it's not like it's okay.
Danidivorce. Like he's gonna steal my children. I know that had to be your biggest fear. I just know it. Yes, Divorce is a big deal.
StephanieYes. On the first day of
Danithe trial, Angie's 11 year old daughter testified. So she was nine at the time of the fire. The evening of the fire, she and her friend had been watching movies and fell asleep around midnight. Don't you remember that? Like, dude, come stay the night. Mom's like, just pass out in the front room, watch movies. Yeah, have your little time. Alyssa said her mom went to sleep in her bedroom. She watched her mom go to bed. they heard the phone ring around midnight and Angie had answered it. Melissa stated that her and her friend had woke up surrounded by fire and that they had to run out through the garage because the whole house was engulfed in flames. How scary. Fireman testified that they found Angie's body in one of the children's bedroom. She was badly burnt, face down on the bed. And another stated he had found a black cape near the driveway.
StephanieOh.
DaniAnd put it in the fire truck. And this fireman thought that maybe somebody had dropped it out of, like, he really didn't think of it as evidence at that time. This is crazy. Like, this should not be here. So maybe one of my dudes had it.
StephanieAnd it is around Halloween, so you're like, maybe some kid lost their little cape or whatever. Good for him for keeping it at least and being like, God, this is not right.
DaniAbdullah tried to get a friend to help mislead the investigation. Mokhtar Bah told the jury Abdullah had called him and asked if he would call the leader of the mosque in Salt Lake City To put into two new gas tanks in his abandoned car because remember he had left his vehicle in Salt Lake.
StephanieUh huh
DaniMok Tar Ba refused to help when this all happened, it was a lot of detail. It was like, okay, go tell your friend, the leader of this mosque, to go buy two new gas cans and then fill them with gas and then dump out the gas and then place them in my car.
Stephaniegrasping at straws and Trying to strategize after the game is already over.
DaniYes, he's like, Oh,
Stephanieshit! I did leave that gas can in the driveway.
DaniWhat the fuck happened to the cape?! Son of a bitch! Where is that gush darn cape? Failed, fucker. You failed. Stop being a dipshit. You were not prepared. And I just, really, can we just go back to that for a second? What did, was he like doing like this alter ego for him? Why was he needing to get a, a cape? I think that that would have been a hindrance starting a fire. Oh, oh, shit, oh, wait, oh, matches, wait. Oh, I've got to put my,
StephanieMaybe he was trying to, here's my thoughts, because I feel like this could go a million different ways. Is he trying to disguise himself as an early trick or treater menace from the neighborhood? I'm a child, I'm lighting a fire. I don't think it was that smart. I don't think so either. Or did it accidentally fall out when he was hurriedly trying to do this and get back to Salt Lake for his alibi and he had a whoopsie? I think he was fucking wearing them. Then that would even be more dipshittery. Because. That's
Daniwhat I'm saying. He, he's a fucking idiot. It was like some alter ego. I'm gonna hide my. It's one thing to wear a mask. Okay. A
Stephaniecape? Even in superhero movies they say don't. We don't do the cape really. We don't do capes. It's not our, it's not the way.
DaniI, I would just. It's. It's. I mean, I have started a few fires in my life. Not
Stephaniearson. Not arson.
DaniYou
Stephanieknow, I did a few arsons.
DaniI've started a few fires. Camp fires. At the cabin, I've started a few fires. I would not want the hindrance of a cape wrapped around my body while I am pouring gas. And I don't even use gasoline. Jesus Christ.
StephaniePoof. If you want your eyebrows, Ladies, protect the brows.
DaniThis was a well thought out plan. I'm, well, well thought out plan. I'm gonna go get an undertaker mask and a cape. Nobody will know it's me. I'm in disguise. Jesus. Abdullah claimed he threw the newly purchased gas cans away when his son complained about the smell. Actually, I, that's a very, that's a good excuse. It's a very good excuse. Cause we've all smelled, go down and get a little gas for the lawnmower. Yeah, or if you've
Stephaniegot a toy hauler, the smell always gets into the main.
DaniIt's disgusting. So, good call, but, oh, I left one in the driveway. Fuck! I forgot my gas can! Dammit! Where's the cape? Uh huh. Receipts, the prosecution has them. For the gas can, for the costume. The owner of the store where the cape was purchased testified she remembered Abdullah because he had negotiated a discount.
StephanieOh, we don't cause a scene.
DaniWe don't, we, we do a
Stephanieregular, un, we do a regular forgettable transaction. What were we thinking here? Not very demure. Would you take 14. 99? She's like, uh, at a retail store as well, like, you don't get discounts at a retail store. Like, listen, I'm one, I'm one for haggling and for a bargain, but my grandmother used to make me do this at yard sales where they'd have like a, I remember a specific, a journal, an unused journal that I was like, I'd love a journal, a cute little notebook, um, and it was marked at like 60 cents or something. And she's like, Offer him a nickel. And she had my little like coin purse That had my yard sale money in it so that I could make my little like toy purchases or whatever And she held it and she gave me a nickel and was like, yeah, take it up there. This is all I have no this and so i'm like Grandma, I mean We're being a little excessive here, but I have a dollar
Dani79. I can definitely afford the 60 cents
StephanieI did get it for the nickel though, so she was overall right, but you don't do that at a retail store because they're like, I don't make, I don't, I just work here. This is a Wendy's, ma'am.
DaniI'm gonna try to, I should have haggled for my panda today.
StephanieHey, I know DoorDash, you're here for 14, but I will give you six. I'm gonna try to, I should have haggled for my panda today, but I will give you six. It just doesn't work that way, but remember me now, bitch. Should not have made it a memorable experience, you dickwad.
DaniAlthough not disclosed to the jury, Adula did admit to having an affair. How was it not disclosed to the jury? The jury was taken out. They discussed it because
StephanieIt's one of those things that could complicate a trial based on whatever factor. And I'm all about
Danithat. If something I shouldn't say as silly as an affair. That was not, I, I really don't believe that was his motivation. You're gonna hear his motivation. Okay. Yeah, the hotel employee in Salt Lake testified that Abdullah had a woman with him when he checked in. So they did hear that testimony, right? But. So they
Stephanieknow.
DaniThey know. Angie's autopsy also showed the remnants of a plastic bag on her face and around her neck.
StephanieNo.
DaniYeah, that's how that shit went down. He thought it was
Stephaniegonna all be burnt up. Plastic doesn't burn well. Bodies don't burn well. No, they don't. You gotta have an incredibly high temperature for that. He's not watching Dateline. Sir, if you would have ever had Talk to Keith Morrison about it, because you're being a dumbass.
DaniDumbass!
StephanieI'm taking the dog! Sorry.
DaniIt's just, I shouldn't laugh. It really isn't
Stephaniefunny, but it's just like He's so
Danistupid, like, does he really think that the whole It's gonna burn a whole body? People burn bodies for days and they don't disappear. It's just not happening. The autopsy also showed the fatal dose of Prozac was administered between 10 p. m. and midnight on the Friday night before the fire.
StephanieInteresting.
DaniAnd there was no evidence of capsules in her stomach.
StephanieOh, because now you really fucked up. Now you've really fucked up. I mean, that one, that one I don't know if I would have thought about that, so. That's probably the only fucking smart thing he did. But, I don't think it was smart. I think it was for ease. If it was a capsule with a powder, it was probably put in a drink or something. So it wasn't for smartness. It was for convenience.
DaniIt was likely administered by putting it in a drink. That's what they said. That's why I was giggling at you. We
Stephaniecan't even give him any props. And listen, no props are going to be given, but these idiots, it just blows your mind.
DaniLike, did they, did he think, oh, well, they might not see that she swallowed 15, no, she didn't. There was, you know, that little gel covering, it sits.
StephanieMm hmm. It should still be a while to
Daniprocess. Yeah, so the prosecution said it was likely Administered by putting it in a drink when the police arrested Abdullah burnt hair was removed from both of his arms.
StephanieOh So you kept your eyebrows, but lost your arm hair Interesting
Dania forensic scientist mask.
StephanieThat's why the mask
DaniProtected his eyebrows Forensic scientists testified the hare had been exposed to a temperature of at least 347 degrees.
StephanieThat's Pacific.
DaniSo fucking Pacific.
StephanieNot Atlantic.
DaniSpecific. Did I say that fucking? You said Pacific.
StephanieIt's very Pacific, folks. It's very Pacific. Pacificly, 347 degrees.
DaniDegrass. That's okay. I was very passionate about it, and so it can be Pacificly done.
StephaniePacificly, it was 347 degrees, folks.
DaniOh, Lord. I, I don't have this written down, but he was making some excuse that he like shaved his arms or some bullshit. With
Stephaniefire? Everyone knows what burnt hair looks, smells, and feels like. And if you don't, props, but.
Danialright, well back to the, the trial here. There, gentleman, Stephen Bankhead, he's an inmate at the Idaho State Prison. He contacted the police in 2003. He testified while Abdullah was teaching a class on Islam at the prison in 2000. They met. Because remember, these guys were, they were very prominent figures. Yes, and they were out there supporting the community that we had here. And it
Stephaniewas truly needed, given the climate. It absolutely
Daniwas. And so, you know, these guys were out here, Angie and Shithead were out here. But he's
Stephanieslipping back into that role in prison, which is very interesting to me.
DaniSo, before Angie died, Right, he was out there. They were doing their thing in the community, for Islam, and, and, he had met Stephen Bankhead while he was teaching a class, out at the Idaho State Prison. Angie was six months pregnant when Abdullah asked Bankhead to drug and kill his wife.
StephanieI'm sorry, if Silent gasp! I shook my fist into the sky for, for those, you know, for audio, but
DaniHe gave Bankhead a thousand dollars a knife, gloves, and a liquid that was supposed to knock her out when mixed with a beverage. Abdullah told Bankhead his wife was not a good Muslim because she would not wear her headdress and ate pork.
StephanieNow. As I've said before, I'm not an expert on, Islam. However, what I do, what I have heard, from what I do know, is that wearing a scarf or a hijab It isn't compulsory. It's supposed to be part of the woman's journey and their choice. This is what I have been told. So once again, not an expert, did a little research. I have people that have talked to me about this, but it, it is, it isn't supposed to be a command from someone else. It's supposed to be, if that's how they want to express their faith. And that's how they want to practice. So. And
Danisurely, should not be a reason.
StephanieTo kill someone? To hire
Dania hitman.
StephanieI don't care what the issue is with the hijab. Like.
DaniWe don't murder. I'm pretty sure that that, that is, I mean, I don't know very much about. I'm sure it's not okay to murder your wife.
StephanieMm hmm.
DaniOkay. Well, it's just, it's not okay. Abdullah had instructed Bankhead to go to the house and ask Angie to borrow a book. Angie would offer him tea as it was custom for Islam. He's like, just go over. So she's
Stephaniepracticing in so many other ways and advocating for the community. And this is the reason that he's given a hitman that was willing to take a thousand dollars. I know that this was in oh two or oh one, wherever
Daniin 2000.
StephanieAre we getting, I mean, team, team who didn't exist back then, but I feel like this is a hitman off sheen. Like what? I wouldn't trust paying a thousand dollars to anyone to do something this serious. Well, this
Daniis just how stupid he is because you're get, obviously he didn't do it. He's like a thousand bucks. This is how stupid Abdullah is. Like, he's like, Oh, I got this in the bag.
StephanieAnd then he went for the DIY, which was
Daniprobably even worse. Here's the knife. Here's the drugs. Got you a set of gloves too, bro. Seriously? Get a fucking life.
StephanieHe made a DIY kit. He's like knife, gloves, liquid, thousand dollars. I've put it in a gift basket for you.
DaniAbdullah told Bankhead after she lost consciousness, To rape her and slit her throat.
StephanieThe fuck?
DaniThe violence.
Stephaniebut what is even the point of that? That's his
Danifucking wife! Mmm, I'm starkless. He then told Bankhead he was to call 9 1 1 and whisper. Wow,
Stephanievery genius plan, yes.
DaniYou know why I like Bankhead? He threw the knife, gloves, and liquid away and he spent the thousand dollars on meth and I love Tim. He said,
Stephaniethank you, I'll be methin around, but, um, best wishes to whatever the fuck you got going on, you weirdo. When the meth head is like, um, that's dumb. That's
Dania little much, bro.
StephanieBro, that's fucking dumb. Um, peace though. I'm gonna head to jackpot. Anyway, bye. Peace. I'm so glad he got fucking scammed. Oh my god. Isn't that the best? Scam these dumb ass
Danibitches. Oh my god. Bankhead did get hold, before the trial, when he heard all of this had went down, kudos to him for going like, yeah, I blew a thousand dollars on meth. He went to the police and told the story, so.
StephanieSo Methhead, Bankhead, it would have been better if you maybe just put an anonymous tip in before you went to jackpot or wherever you went.
DaniSomebody gave me a thousand dollars and some knives and gloves. Find
Stephaniea way, write a letter do agree with that. I know that you were probably busy with the whole meth, meth, mething around, um, so, lesson learned, meth head bankman.
DaniI wonder how pissed Abdullah was that he got ripped off for a thousand bucks.
StephanieHe consulted a crackhead? That's your first mistake, idiot. Fuck. I know a local crackhead. He'll do it. He'll get the job done. Through my charity work or through my church's work. We know a couple crackheads. They'll do anything. We
Danigot it done.
StephanieA thousand bucks is like a million to this guy. He's like, this guy's so fucking dumb.
DaniI bet you he's so fucking mad because I just picture him as like being this overly I mean, he's incompetent as a man, but he thinks he's a man. Because remember, Angie's 37 and he's 25 and all this goes down.
StephanieThat is so crazy. Right? So he probably thinks he's
Dani10 times the man he could ever be. Oh yeah. And so he's like, I got this. Brilliant!
StephanieJust hire a crackhead for it. You don't hire a crackhead for anything except maybe, like, protection on your block because they will ride for you if you pay them. Like, but you don't let them around your electronics or your car or give them a thousand dollars and a knife and say, I, I bet he was honestly disappointed. I bet he thought, this guy's going to pay me to be a hitman. I'm going to get. 300, 000. And then he comes with a grand and he's like,
Danioh, I'm not doing this shit. But anyways, I'll take the money. He didn't say that. He's like, this is not happening, but I'll take what you got. You got a VCR. You got a DVD player.
StephanieI'd love to take it apart. Sorry, guys, this is just too much.
DaniThe defense presented witnesses that of course stated Abdullah was a good husband. Yeah, higher in the meth head. And I'm sorry, Mr. Bank, you probably, you, we know you did.
StephanieI'm so glad that you came forward. So thank you. Yeah.
DaniI'm not trying to bash you.
StephanieMethin for Jesus. I'm not trying
Danito bash you. You said You said The defense presented witnesses to say that Abdullah was a good husband and was excited about the birth of their new son right before the murder.
StephanieReally? Faking it? Maybe for the son, sure. Oh yeah. He's like, yeah,
Daniget that kid out of there. Yeah, let's go. Abdullah did not testify in his own defense. That's weird. in closing argument, arguments Abdullah's attorneys admitted that he had repeatedly lied about his alibi to save face, but maintained he did not kill his wife. His attorney stated, I would fucking love to see this on in a video. I would love to see his attorney say this with a fucking straight face. I'm not kidding.
StephanieI'm so excited.
DaniOh, Abdul's attorney admitted that he had, drove back to Boise on the night of the fifth, but did not go to the house. How do you even fucking say that with a straight face? You fat mouth mother fucking liar. And just,
Stephanieum, cause you can say that witnesses. Eyewitness testimony, who knows who they saw, why would you ever be like, yeah, he did, you know, do, he went to Salt Lake and then did a quick trip back in the middle of the night, on the same
Daninight. They gave no explanation. You know, that whore that he was with, that whore he was with, at the fucking hotel, kept his kid. The whole, the gas tanks, the gas can, oh Jesus, I cannot get it straight. The gas cans that he said his son, No, you did not take your son. You left him with your mistress in a hotel And drove back to Boise and started your house on fire with your wife You killed your wife and then started the fire with your fucking children inside you
StephanieFucking and just dirt bag hoping that they'll make it out except for the one tiny. No, he did carry
DaniHe did carry that 19 month old out Really? Yeah. He was wrapped in a blanket in the backyard. He was specifically taken out of the house. Not sure why he didn't take the three week old baby, the old three, but to leave Angie's daughter and her friend. Go fuck yourself, Abdullah.
StephanieHe was basically like, maybe odds be in your favor. Sayonara. You want to drop my cape. Let's drive away. Oh shit.
DaniLeft the gas can. Fuck this guy. Okay. Those two. Look, we've covered shit. To murder somebody is a horrible thing. To start a fucking fire with children in a fucking house. Your
Stephanieown children rot, you motherfucker.
DaniSo of course, this asshole defends Also said the only one could've, that could've started the fire was Angie. They implied, yeah. They implied that Angie and Abdullah planned the fire together for insurance money.
StephanieFuckin fat nuts. A woman is better at planning. I'm sorry. Thank you. This is literal science. I'm just saying that, but I think that most people know. There's a reason that women are behind all of the PTA meetings and the wrestling academies and the fundraisers because. It's tied
Daniup nicely.
StephanieWith a bow. To plan it and then to accidentally die in it is just. So with a plastic bag around her head, yeah, fuck that, you know, and then I decided at, you know, 1152, I would put a bag around my head for aesthetic purposes because it helps with your skin
Daniand let my children die. What? She was a devoted mother
Stephaniethat she planned this and somehow had a bag around her head. I hate
Danidefense teams like this. It's like if, if it's not gonna make sense, just shut the fuck up. Yeah,
Stephaniedon't, don't even address it or find a better story. Get creative.
DaniHe was crazy. That's what everybody goes with. Yeah. It only took the jury eight hours to find him guilty of first degree murder. And the jury sentenced him to death because Idaho got their shit together, and it's not having judges hand down the death sentence.
StephanieBecause even, that has been a problem in Idaho, is Idaho tried to, Be like, I'm doing my own thing, which you can't really do, like there is federal things you have to follow. But Idaho wanted to just be like, look what I can do. And they, then the federal government was like, but you can't. And that's why so many of these, these death row, Went back and forth for years. Well, but we're
Danistill back and forth for years because in 2005, Appeals, appeals, appeals. And in 2015, the Idaho Supreme Court upheld the death sentence for Abdullah despite his 15 post conviction challenges. There's still more appeals. And he's still sitting on fucking death row almost 10 years later. I just don't know how you
Stephaniecan appeal that many times. Like I thought you had to have, I don't understand everything about death row appeals, but I thought you had to have like some certain. Like, is he just attacking a certain thing and eat throughout the case? No,
Danithe first, in 2015, he had 15 post conviction challenges, so he like put all of these
StephanieOkay, I thought each one was a case. No,
Danihe put these all forward, but he's still just sitting there. Go fuck yourself, and I hope your children are happy and healthy, and don't know you.
StephanieSorry. So, overall, this was something that someone thought would be a slam dunk, because the climate It was truly bad here. I remember it vividly and I wasn't even being, you know, I'm not the one that was going to be assumed to be of any type of like a Muslim religion or anything.
DaniNo, but to try to take advantage of the climate. Right of the hostility and the discrimination because it was happening. It was happening
Stephaniea lot
DaniDefinitely happening to take advantage of that to try to blame that on for the death of your wife
Stephaniea heinous
DaniYou fucking coward and which also just builds into the hate Like he was he because
Stephaniethen that gives other people an excuse the other people you We'll latch on to that and then think that every hate crime is made up, which we know isn't true. But
DaniI mean there's definitely hate crimes, but to blame your wife's murder on that and do you remember he said, I hope my children and I Get to see, you know, your downfall, that's not exactly what it is, but your downfall. Guess you're
Stephanieseeing it.
DaniWe're seeing it. Look
Stephaniein the mirror.
DaniHmm.
