Longevity isn’t just about living longer, it’s about staying sharp, strong, and confident for as many decades as possible. We dig into a bold idea gaining traction in longevity medicine: “longevity escape velocity,” where near-future interventions could add 10 to 15 years to your lifespan if you’re prepared to use them. That single concept flips the script on midlife, because it forces a practical question: are you building a body and brain that can actually enjoy the extra time?

We also challenge the default retirement storyline. Retirement wasn’t designed around health span or human biology, it was shaped by economics and labor needs. We talk through research linking retirement to higher depression risk and a spike in chronic illness soon after leaving the workforce, then connect it to something more personal: purpose. Purpose, legacy, and a reason to get up every day can be as important as any longevity protocol.

You’ll get a simple mindset exercise that instantly changes how you see your future: pick the age you think you’ll die, then add 15 years. From there, we share practical habits that support healthy aging and preventative medicine, including curating your media diet, choosing positive people, and building the kind of optimism that helps you stay engaged with life. If you care about hormone optimization, longevity science, health span, and aging well, you’ll walk away with a clearer plan and a bigger vision. Subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review with the age you wrote down and what you’d do with 30 more healthy years.

Welcome to the Dr. 50 Something Podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Nicole Norris. Whether you are in the midst of midlife or you want to prevent the physical and mental signs of aging that occur in midlife, this is the podcast for you. This is a show where I share my knowledge, gleaned in family practice, preventative medicine, and aesthetic medicine to shed light on aging, or better yet, how not to feel or look like you are aging. We should be taking an active role in how we age from an early age. We should not settle with growing old gracefully or letting nature take its course. How we age directly affects our confidence, which impacts all of our relationships with those around us. The length of time in our lives that we feel really good in terms of energy, aches and pains, and thought clarity has a definite impact on the mark we can leave on this world. My wish for my listeners is to always be mistaken for being 50-something or less in mind, action, and appearance. Let's go. And it has a picture of me, Dr. 50 something, with my microphone and a pink background. It's very eye-catching, if I do say so myself. Even my 17-year-old son and his friends saw it and they wanted to know more. These days, men and women of all ages spend a lot of time listening to podcasts. Personally, I mostly listen to what you might consider pretty dry ones, longevity science, being an entrepreneur, of course, some self-improvement. My patients tell me about their addictions to podcasts like Crime Junkie, which I think I would like. I'm just not sure how it would improve my life. Some of my team members are hooked on podcasters who interview famous people and divulge their innermost thoughts and opinions, which can be very entertaining, but again, not sure that I really need that in my life. Of all of the podcasts that you can choose to spend your precious time listening to, I think the things I'm talking about on this podcast should be ranked toward the top in terms of life importance. Though extremely important information for everyone, the topics I have covered so far in this podcast are not taught in grade school, high school, or college, and they are barely mentioned in medical, nursing, or dental schools. There are actually very few places online or on social media for the average person to get an accurate amount of information about hormone-related issues, let alone replacement backed by actual good science. There are even fewer reputable resources to get an understanding of peptides, when to use them, and what they've actually been shown to do. And as far as longevity medicine, the resources to educate yourself on influencing the trajectory of your health span are slim to none. Okay, so what I'm going to say next is very important. And yes, it is my opinion, but it is also an opinion shared with many other scientists and researchers in the field of longevity medicine today. Many of you are going to hear what I'm gonna say and you're not really gonna believe it. Okay, here we go. In the next 10 to 15 years, based on the interventions that are currently available and the ones that I have heard that are coming, I predict that human longevity is going to hit escape velocity. What I mean by escape velocity is that there will be treatments available in the not so far off future that, if utilized, will immediately add on another 10 to 15 years to your life. You can either jump on that rocket or be left behind. This science now exists, you guys, to give you a path to a longer and more fruitful life than has really ever been possible. Even right now, without longevity escape velocity, babies born today will easily live to be over 100 years old. So what I'm educating about on this podcast actually does apply to everyone that sees that billboard. I really want as many people as possible to know that you can now significantly influence how long you will live and how productive you can be up until you die. You can now influence your health span, your mind span, how you look as you age, and honestly, how many careers you want to have. You really don't have to retire at 65, or I think now it's 67 for those born after 1960, unless you choose to. So let's talk a little more about the whole idea of retirement. Do you know the history of retirement? The concept of retirement was widely accepted in the United States after the Industrial Revolution. It really had to do with older workers on assembly lines earning the highest wages, but at the same time, those older workers also requiring more sick days and often being actually slower and not as good at their jobs. Setting a retirement age and providing them a pension was a way to make room for younger, more efficient workers who did not require as much pay. The U.S. Social Security Act of 1935 chose age 65 as the age you should retire and get your Social Security benefits. And the U.S. based their program on Germany's old age pension system, which was established by Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in the late 1800s. Younger Otto initially set the retirement age at 70. And then, when he turned 65, changed it to 65 and retired himself with his pension. I love history. It is so repetitive. Another government act created based on zero science, affecting health significantly, and was all about money. Did you know that today the act of retiring from the workforce increases the chances of suffering from clinical depression by around 40%? And leaving the workforce for good also increases a person's chances of having at least one diagnosed chronic illness by 60% in the year following retirement compared to those still working at the same age. I mentioned in my first podcast that my mom and dad are still farming. They have a small farm growing corn and soybeans here in Illinois. They are age 77 and 84, respectively. They don't act old or feel old. They both look pretty good for their age, and honestly, neither of them have ever taken me up on any significant aesthetic procedures, even though I have offered. They both have had their share of health problems, but they have gotten through them. So you might say to me, wow, it sounds like you have good long life genes. However, based on a 2018 analysis of 54 million person ancestry database, only about 7% of how long you live is based on your genetics. 7%. That means 93% of your lifespan is based on other factors. So my parents have only recently in the last two years optimized their hormones. And I, of course, did GI maps on both of them to get their gut health in order. And then I started them both on glutathione and a few other peptides to strengthen their immune system since they are both cancer survivors. But these are all very recent interventions. So what has been keeping my parents young for their age all of these years? I think the answer is their mindset. Neither one of them have ever considered retiring from the farm. They still have their jobs they have had for their whole adult lives on the farm. And now they are teaching my eldest son the ropes of farming. They have a reason to get up every day. They are active, they make their own income, and they don't depend on anybody else. And most importantly, they have a sense of purpose and they are driven to leave a legacy to the next generation. They both have what I would consider a very healthy longevity mindset. It's not something you are born with, though. You have to work at it. Now I'm going to ask you a very important question. Feel free to pause the podcast and think about it a little. I want you to think about a number and write it down or text it to yourself. Write down the age at which you think you're going to die. I want you to answer this spontaneously based on whatever number comes to mind. This number will likely be based on your experience of when others in your family have died, your own health, and your current beliefs about longevity. Okay, pause the podcast right now, as long as you're not driving and write it down or type it on your phone. Okay, next, I want you to do some math. I want you to add 15 years to that number. Remember what I said about longevity escape velocity? This is your new number. You're going to add your first number plus 15. This is your new number. When I did this exercise myself, my first number was actually 115 based on what I know is possible in longevity medicine currently. Then I added on 15 years due to longevity escape velocity that's coming soon. And that gave me 130 years old. I am currently 52, which means I have 78 more years to work on leaving my legacy. When you think of that new number and think how far away that is from today, it changes your mindset. You suddenly have more time and therefore more you can do in the world. That is, if you also have your muscle mass to get around and your brain for executive functioning. It is not if, it is when. We are going to hit longevity escape velocity and the ability to live longer. So if you want to be ready for it and still have your mobility in your brain, you have to prioritize hence. Repetition is the mother of learning, someone said. Hormone optimization, exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress management. Hens. Isn't it funny how I can work that into every podcast? Okay, so how are you feeling? I just gave you added years to your life in your mind. It feels like I just gave you a shot of hope and optimism, didn't I? You now have the beginning of a longevity mindset. Next, I want to discuss a few more habits that are key to further developing your longevity mindset. You need to seriously work on these. Number one, stay positive. There are good studies that optimists live 15% longer lives than pessimists. Think of your life like a swimming pool in your backyard. Only let positive, supportive people in your swimming pool. Only let positive experiences and positive media on the pool deck. If something or someone gives you that ick feeling, kick it to the curb. Don't let those negative Nellies pee in your pool. Number two, think about the media you are consuming. This is important. Our minds are constantly being shaped by what we see and hear. Are you reading the obituaries every day? Or are you listening to podcasts like this one? We are bombarded with messaging from all kinds of media every day. And they are all not only vying for our time, but also shaping our mindset. Consider who you follow on social media, which podcasts you listen to, what shows you watch, and what books you read. All of these things strongly influence your longevity mindset and therefore your health span. Number three, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If you are mostly hanging out with people your age or older who don't exercise, don't watch what they eat, are negative, and just talk about their health problems, you will become them. Consider spending more time with others who are interested in developing a longevity mindset. People who seem to have endless energy, and people who don't act their age. Get a close friend group who are the CEOs of their health, not destined to be sick. Number four, somewhere in our brain, we all have a will to live. Working in healthcare most of my life, I have heard countless stories of dying patients willing themselves to live until the last family member arrived at the bedside. Or stories of married couples dying within days to months of each other. Your will to live is fueled by your mindset, and key to this is having something to live for and look forward to. I'm going to throw in a little more history here. This is a cool story about the power of a longevity mindset, and two of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, signed the Declaration of Independence July 4th, 1776. They were, of course, passionate about seeing our country grow and maintain its independence from England. They both vowed to live to see our country celebrate 50 years as the United States of America. In an age when the average age of death was 44, these two men lived into their 80s and 90s and both died on July 4th, 1826, exactly 50 years after they signed the Declaration of Independence. A true testament of the will to live. So now that I have just added years onto your life by a simple mindset shift, you need to have a clear vision of what you can accomplish with that extra time. A thought-provoking question that can really help you with this and establishing your why is what would you do with an extra 30 years of health span? Health span implies you are mobile and your brain function is good right up until the end. I continually think about this question and I add more things, I change it. I have a pretty long list, I'm gonna share some with you. So far, my list includes wanting to be an active participant in my grandkids' and great-grandkids' lives. I would actually love for one of them to join my medical practice and take it over one day, kind of like my parents and their farm. I want to continue working as a longevity doctor and innovator and be a part of this monumental shift that is occurring in medicine. Patients now more than ever want to have control of their health. They are hungry for information to change the dialogue of medicine from not just treating sickness, but with more emphasis on the specifics of how sickness can be prevented. I want to make the science of longevity medicine available to as many people as possible before I die. I would also like to make the world a healthier place with fewer toxins, less chemicals, and better food. I hope to create a large-scale organic farm someday. I also plan to visit space. Truly, the sky is the limit with a longevity mindset. Take some time to create your vision of what you will do with an extra 30 years of health span. No vision is too big. When you do this exercise, you will be further solidifying a healthy longevity mindset. I hope this podcast has helped expose you to yet another secret to longevity. Honestly, though, the secrets to a long, fruitful life really shouldn't be a secret. Hence the billboard. Thank you for joining this episode of the Dr. 50 Something Show.
