Speaker 2:

In this episode we dive into Parcelpedia's secure shredding services and who really benefits from them. Welcome back everyone. I'm Sophia Yvette, co-host and producer. Back in the studio with owner of Parcelpedia, james Banks. James, how's it going today?

Speaker 3:

Hey Sophia, I'm doing well. How are you?

Speaker 2:

I'm also doing well and excited to get into the nitty gritty of shredding today.

Speaker 3:

So, james, Very good Rebecca.

Speaker 2:

Do you provide shredding services, and for whom?

Speaker 3:

Yes, here at Parcelpedia we definitely provide shredding services and it's really available for all. If you need to come in just shred one document, or if you have a whole truckload, we're here to help you. So we offer to personal use, business use, really anything you need we can help you with it. We do do it by a weight basis, so we charge 99 cents per pound on the shredding. If you do have a bulk amount, we always try to offer some assistance, some discounting. So if you get over 35 pounds we do drop it down to 88 cents just to give you a little bit savings right off the top there. And if you have less than a pound, then typically we may not charge you. We try to be pretty nice here so we won't make you fork over that dollar. But just as far as the process of how it goes, just so everyone's informed, we do use a secure lock box system, as you may see kind of across different companies as shredding.

Speaker 3:

So we have a shredding company that provides us a very large basically like a large trash can box with a very thin slit at the top that's locked down, and so the only thing that can get through that slot is paper, paper or like cards, notebooks, things of that nature that go there and that way nothing can come out. Once your information is in that box it's locked down until it's destroyed. But they come out to us, they shred it right here on site and we get a certificate of shredding. So we know it's been done and I can say with pride that over the 10 plus years I've been here we've never had any incident with the shredding. Nothing's ever leaked, nothing's ever been missing or gone. So they do a great job.

Speaker 3:

We trust them very well and we definitely invite you down to come try this out. You can always call us. You know. If you're not sure, we can go back over with you how we do things. If you're not really ready to shred but you want to see what you have, you can still come to us and we'll weigh it for you. Just so you have an idea. Not everyone has a scale at their house, so come by really for any questions. We're here to help you.

Speaker 2:

Now, what types of documents do most customers bring in for shredding?

Speaker 3:

So most customers bring in just like old receipts, some old personal documents that they may have gotten refreshed or updated old driver's license, old credit cards, things like that, things you just don't really have much use for. But if they get into the wrong hands you could be in some trouble. So they bring them to us and we're just happy to shred them. That way it's just a peace of mind for them and really low cost as well.

Speaker 2:

Now, do you offer onsite shredding, or is it collected and processed somewhere else?

Speaker 3:

Yes, so it is collected here on site but it is shred on site. So while we may not do the shredding right then and there, when the company comes to us to shred it, they do do it right here so they don't whisk it away somewhere where we don't know what they do with it. We literally watch them shred it and then they that's when they provide us that certificate to show that the entire bin has been destroyed and it's good. So one of the main parts is that once you bring it to us it doesn't go anywhere else other than the shredder. So once we get it and we put it into the lockbox, you watch us do that. So you watch it literally go into it basically a little safe that's not opened. And then when the shredding company comes, they do it all right in front of our eyes. So they unlock it with their key, they dump it into the machine and it's pretty cool.

Speaker 3:

It's a big machine built into the truck. They do it right in the parking lot. So if you ever want to come by while they're doing it, you're more than welcome to do that and see how it's done. But it's cool, it's just a big industrial shredder that, just you know, tears up that paper really fast and really easy and it's all. It's not in too many hands. You know it's with you, then it's with us than it's with the shredding and that's it.

Speaker 2:

Now, are there volume limits or minimums for shredding services?

Speaker 3:

Again, no, we've never assessed a minimum. We don't feel like we want to keep anyone away from coming by. If you feel like you just have a handful of papers, we'll still throw it on the scale and see, you may be surprised. You may have two, three pounds without realizing it. But there's no volume minimum and really no volume maximum. If you know you have a large amount, we typically ask customers just to give us a heads up, just so we can probably schedule the drivers to come that same day, just so you feel more at peace because you have such a large amount being destroyed right then and there you don't have to worry about it sitting or anything like that, and it just helps us coordinate everything, just so. It's much more seamless for the customer.

Speaker 2:

Now do you see more individuals or businesses using this service?

Speaker 3:

You know I would say it's a pretty even split. It's a pretty even split. A lot of people that are conscious of identity theft and trying to clear out their house. We get that on a more of a regular basis. But as far as the volume, for sure the businesses, you know they come through with the hundred of pounds 200 pounds, you know, and up. Yes, and it may seem like a lot, but it's pretty quick. I mean it's just paper getting torn up, so it works through it pretty fast and you get your, you know your receipt pretty quick. But yeah, I would say it's pretty even split between businesses and just personal use.

Speaker 2:

As far as the shredding services, but businesses take the cake for how much they bring for sure.

Speaker 3:

Now, what's the most surprising item someone has brought into Shred, you know? So I've actually had and we're looking into. We don't offer it just yet but we're looking into electronic shredding. So shredding the old hard drives, shredding the old, you know, vcr players, dvd players, things that you feel kind of nervous about throwing in the landfill, which you know you should. It's not good for the environment. So we're looking into ways to offer that service as well. So I've had people bring that to me. Just, they see shredding online. They come up like, hey, you can shred this right. I'm like no, not quite, not at the moment at least, but we're looking to that.

Speaker 3:

But little clip, but luckily the shredder we use, they use a very high strength industrial shredder so you can leave your paper clips. You can leave even your binder clips, those big black binder clips. They tear right through that. So even those are okay to be left on the document. Now you have a lot of them. They will add up and wait, so you may want to take them off and they're good to reuse, you know, just as far as recycling purposes. But it's a tough shredder so you don't have to worry about just bringing just straight paper. You can have paper clips, it's okay. You can even have CD-ROM drives. You know a lot of people have data on their DVDs or CD-ROMs show. They could actually, because it's a big truck, so they will know it's there.

Speaker 3:

It takes up about six spots. And yeah, they just pull up you know a little bucket of popcorn, some soda, you know a lawn chair and just get back and watch the shredding begin.

Speaker 2:

Thanks for watching. Thanks for walking us through the shred side of things, James. That's a wrap for today. I'll see you next time.

Speaker 3:

Alright, catch you next time.
