Good afternoon, Bluffs Country. I'm Peggy Sweet and this is Belonging in the Bluffs, brought to you by the Iowa West Foundation. I'm joined in studio today with my good friend Susan. She is the president of the Carson Business Club. Welcome, Susan. Hello, Peggy. It's so good to see you again. It's great to have you back, too. It's good to see you, but it's great to have you back in here with me. I love uh having you in the studio. You always have great events and things that are happening over in Carson, and today's no exception. You've got some really fun stuff to talk about.
SPEAKER_00Last year we got to celebrate Zip Code Day. I remember that, yeah. It was on May 15, 2025, and it was a Thursday. And our number one comment we had was, why didn't you do this on Saturday? Why did you do it on Thursday? And we had to explain because it's zip code day. Yep. And anyway, by the way, Crescent is having zip code day on 51526. But anyway, we thought if we could follow up from Zip Code Day and plan something for a Saturday, and we brought back the Carson Jubilee. Okay. Back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, that was a big summertime event. Uh we had carnival rides, and it was just a fun time for the whole community. So we're bringing it back in a smaller scale, but we're bringing it in conjunction with the high school rodeo. Oh. So the Iowa State High School Rodeo Association has six rodeo events across the state, and they will be in the Carson Arena on May 29th, 30th, and 31st. And that will include a hundred, approximately a hundred high school students that participate. And Riverside has its own high school rodeo team. So we will have some local contestants and they do all of the normal rodeo events that you see in our August big rodeo that we have. So we'll have the rodeo down at the rodeo grounds, and then we are planning a car show on Broadway that afternoon from noon to three.
SPEAKER_01Everybody loves a car show.
SPEAKER_00Well, and this one's got trophies. It's not just a show and shine, it's it's trophies.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Then we've got kids' games and activities scheduled for three to six down at the park. So you can go to the rodeo for a while, you can walk down and have the kids play games, or you can divide the family up. It's all walking distance, and hopefully it'll be a beautiful spring day, and everybody will just get enjoy being outside. Um, some of the games that we have planned, we've got a smash car. If if you want to show your strength, then love swinging um sledgehammers. This is the event for you. Okay. Um, we've got a dunk tank coming in, and we've got some pretty important people that have agreed to sit up on the the dunk stand. So really well, give me a sneak peek or well, I I know the mayor's gonna be there for sure. Okay. That would that would be a good plan. Yeah, we're we're working on the high school principal. That's always a popular choice as well. I bet. And we've got corgi races. Really? So we did it for the first time last year and had such a great turnout, and it's all things corgi, and we just would encourage anybody who has one to come out and enter the race. And then we've got three-legged races. You remember way back when? And Peggy, maybe you'll be my partner. You'll have to come out and we will be our own little three-legged team. That sounds like a good idea. And see if we can outrun the rest of the competitors. How old are they? Are you gonna have age groups? Or or at least maybe we can um participate and not fall down and hurt ourselves. I think that's a good plan. That's a better plan. And then we've got carnival games that some of the locals are going to put together that will just entertain the kids and give everybody something to do in a small town on a Saturday afternoon. That's a lot. We've got um a dinner that night with live music, and we have Howling Harmonies, which are a lot of Riverside students that just love to share their talents and they will be singing. And then 7 30, we have our regular movie at the Dreamland Theater.
SPEAKER_01Well, Susan, you've got a spectacular day of fun planned. Corgi races, kids' games, three-legged race, live music, dinner, all of the things, car show. I mean, there's something for everybody.
SPEAKER_00And one of the really nice things about it too is with our Main Street Carson, there are businesses that are on Main Street. And while we've got the car show going on, you can go to the Judge Richards distillery.
SPEAKER_01Oh, we can go shopping or grab a drink or yeah.
SPEAKER_00And we've got other businesses on Main Street, and you can just Enjoy the day. Enjoy the day and see what Carson has to offer.
SPEAKER_01Which is a lot. You always bring me a lot of great things that you guys are doing here in the area. And Carson is just a hop, skip, and a jump.
SPEAKER_00And the important thing right now, this year, we've got bridge construction. The Highway 59 bridge has been removed and they are replacing it. And it has created a big detour. And it is, I think we're losing some people that used to do business in Carson because it's uncomfortable or it's out of their way to it.
SPEAKER_01It's not as convenient to get to.
SPEAKER_00So I just want to remind everybody that Carson is open for business and we still would love to see you. And this event on May 30th will just be a great opportunity to do that.
SPEAKER_01And if you'd like more information on this event happening May 30th with the Corgi races, the car show, all of the things, you can get that at CarsonGov.com. That is CarsonGov.com. All right, Susan, thank you so much for stopping by. I can't wait for this event. It's gonna be so much fun. It will be fun, Peggy. Thank you so much. We will see you there. All right. This has been Belonging in the Bluffs, brought to you by the Iowa West Foundation.
