Ep 17: Healing Through Nature: The Power of Australian Bush Flower Essences with Ian White
"If you communicate with nature, rather than trying to command and dominate, you'll get much better bounty." -Ian White
Ian White has been pioneering the use of native plants for healing since 1979. Growing up in a family of herbalists, he learned about the healing properties of native plants from his grandmother, whose mother practiced herbalism during Australia’s gold rush. Ian discusses how bush flower essences, which he created after a health crisis in India, have transformed lives, including helping his mother-in-law manage epilepsy without medication for over 30 years. He explains how these essences address both emotional and physical health, and expresses optimism for their future in meeting evolving societal needs.
Topics Covered:
- Ian's Childhood and Early Influences

- The story of Sydney Rose essence
- Using bush essences alongside other treatments
- Development of new essences over time

About my guest:
Ian White is the founder of Australian Bush Flower Essences and a 5th generation herbalist. With a Bachelor of Science from the University of NSW and degrees in Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine, and Homoeopathy, Ian has been a successful Naturopath since 1979. His deep connection to herbalism traces back to his great-great-grandmother, a herbalist during Australia’s Gold Rush in the 1850s, and his grandmother and great-grandmother, who were among the first to research and use Australian native plants for healing. Growing up in the bush, Ian spent much of his childhood with his grandmother, learning the healing properties of local plants and developing a lifelong respect for nature. Ian has built upon this family legacy by specializing in the emotional and spiritual aspects of Australian native plants, dedicating over 30 years to pioneering his range of Australian Bush Flower Essences. He is the author of five books and teaches workshops worldwide. Accompanied by his wife, Jane—who is also a skilled Flower Essences practitioner and principal harpist with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra—Ian continues his work globally. Their daughter Grace works in event management, though Ian jokingly doesn’t expect her to carry on the family herbalist tradition. Ian’s other passion is body surfing, which he enjoys whenever he can.
