Podcast Episode 4 Description: "Aligning Purpose with Strategy"

In this episode of The Purpose and Profit Podcast, Dr. Ty Wenglar dives into the critical topic of strategic alignment—where purpose meets execution. Dr. Wenglar explores how aligning your organization’s goals, operations, and culture with its purpose can foster collaboration, improve decision-making, and drive long-term success. Featuring real-world examples from companies like Patagonia, Ikea, and Unilever, this episode offers actionable insights and five practical steps to align purpose with strategy: clarifying purpose, integrating it into strategic goals, aligning operations, fostering a culture of alignment, and measuring progress.

If your organization struggles with silos, inefficiency, or a disconnect between rhetoric and reality, this episode will guide you toward creating a cohesive, purpose-driven strategy.

Welcome back to the Purpose and Profit Podcast. I'm Dr. Ty Wenglar, your host, and I'm so glad you're joining me again as we explore the transformative power of purpose driven leadership. We talked about the foundations of purpose driven leadership, clarity, ethics, and long term impact. These pillars are what set great leaders apart and create the foundation for meaningful change.

Today we're going to go a step further and explore how to align your purpose with your strategy. Because here's the thing, having a clear company purpose simply isn't enough. If your actions, goals, and processes aren't aligned with that purpose, it will remain just words on a page. Basically, nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

Let me start with a question to you. Have you ever worked in an organization where every department or division seemed to have their own [00:01:00] agenda or their own mission, leaving all of those supporting those departments like accounting, IT, leaving them wondering which way to turn. That's what happens when there's a lack of strategic alignment within an organization.

Strategic alignment is about ensuring that everything an organization does, everything you do, every decision, every project, every team, supports your organization's purpose. Without alignment, even the best purpose will falter. So what exactly is strategic alignment? And why is it so important? In simple terms, strategic alignment is the process of ensuring that every aspect of your organization, your goals, your operations, your culture, are aligned with your overarching purpose, your company's mission.

It's the bridge between your vision [00:02:00] and the way you actually execute it. And here's why it matters. First, it improves decision making. When everyone understands the purpose, they can evaluate their actions and decisions through that lens, a common lens among all people. Second, it fosters collaboration.

Teams and departments know how their work contributes to the larger mission. This helps to break down silos and encourage cohesion. And finally, it drives long term success. When your strategy is aligned with your purpose, you create a sustainable path forward, one that resonates with employees, customers, and stakeholders alike.

Let me give you an example. Patagonia is a company that's synonymous with strategic alignment. Their purpose is clear. We're in business, To save our home planet, that purpose drives [00:03:00] everything they do, from designing sustainable products, to encouraging customers to repair and reuse their gear instead of buying new.

Whether you agree with that mission or not, it's hard to argue with the results. Because this alignment hasn't just built a strong brand, it has fostered a loyal customer base and made Patagonia a leader in environmental activism. Every decision they make reflects their purpose, and this is seen by their customers and their fans.

Alucentra. We help organizations achieve this same kind of alignment. We work with leaders to connect the dots between their purpose and their day to day strategies, ensuring that everyone is rowing in the same direction, so to speak. So now let's talk about what happens When this alignment is missing within an organization.

First, departments start working in a silo. [00:04:00] This wastes time and resources as well as duplicating effort between departments. Next, inefficiency increases as it's caused by unclear priorities and competing goals. Disengagement among employees who don't understand how their work fits into the bigger picture begins to increase.

And most importantly, a lack of alignment can erode trust with customers and stakeholders. Think about organizations that have a strong mission statement but fail to deliver on them. As I've said in a previous podcast, where their rhetoric does not match their reality. That disconnect damages credibility and reputation.

Now, on the flip side, when alignment is present, everything changes. Productivity increases because teams know exactly what to focus on and [00:05:00] why. Employees feel motivated and engaged because their work has meaning. It has purpose. Customers see consistency and more importantly, authenticity. This builds trust.

And loyalty. Let's think back to our last podcast and take Unilever as an example. Their sustainable living plan aligns their business strategy with their purpose, to make sustainable living commonplace. By embedding this purpose into their operations, they've reduced their environmental impact, improved global health and grown their brand reputation all at the same time.

This kind of alignment isn't just about doing good. It's also good business. So how do you achieve strategic alignment within your organization? Well, Here are five practical steps to at least get started. [00:06:00] First, step one, clarify your purpose. Everything begins with a clear, compelling purpose. If your purpose is vague or outdated, it's time to revisit it.

Make sure it is something that is actionable. Ask yourself, does my mission statement truly reflect why we exist? Is it clear enough to guide decisions? At Lucentra, when we work with organizations, we often start by facilitating leadership workshops to refine an organization's purpose. This creates clarity and buy in at the top, which then cascades through the organization.

Moving to our second step. Integrate purpose into strategic goals. Once your purpose is clear, it needs to inform your strategic objectives. Every goal should reflect your mission. For example, Google's mission is [00:07:00] to, quote, Organize the world's information and make it universally accessible. and useful.

This purpose guides everything they do, from search engine innovation to their advancements in AI and cloud computing. The key is to connect the dots between your purpose and your measurable goals. Step three, align operations with purpose. Your purpose isn't just about what you say, it's also about what you do.

From supply chains to customer service, Every process should align with your company's mission. Take Ikea, for example, their commitment to sustainability. Isn't just a marketing message through their quote people and planet positive quote strategy. They've committed to using renewable. energy, outsourcing sustainable materials, and helping customers live more eco [00:08:00] friendly lives.

In other words, they are doing what they are saying. Step four, foster a culture of alignment. Culture is the glue that holds alignment together. Without it, even the best strategies will fall apart. To foster a culture of alignment, reinforce your purpose in everything you do. From hiring practices to internal communication.

Zappos is a great example of this. Their purpose of delivering happiness is reflected not just in their customer service, but in how they treat their employees. This brings us to step five. Measure and adjust. Finally, alignment is an ongoing process. It is not a switch to turn on and be done with. Use Key Performance Indicators, [00:09:00] KPIs, to track your progress and adjust as needed.

For instance, Novo Nordisk uses a triple bottom line approach. They evaluate their success not just in financial terms, but also in social and environmental outcomes. This keeps their purpose front and center while ensuring accountability. So let's recap some key questions to help you align your purpose with your strategy.

First, clarity. Is your organization's purpose and mission clear? And is it reflected in your mission statement? Integration. Are your strategic goals aligned with that mission? And last, Culture. Does your organization's culture reinforce its purpose or are there gaps? Start small. Maybe it's something as [00:10:00] simple as conducting a purpose audit to identify areas of misalignment within the organization.

Or maybe it's holding a cross functional meeting to ensure everyone is on the same page. Strategic alignment isn't a one time event. As I said earlier, it is not a switch you simply flip, it is a journey. However, strategic alignment is the key to turning purpose into action. It ensures that every part of your organization is working together to achieve a shared mission and a shared vision.

So here's my challenge to you this week. Take one step to align your purpose with your strategy. Start with a conversation, revisit your goals, or simply look for ways to embed your mission into your daily operations. And I'd love to hear about it.
