HealingStrong's Around the Word

Episode 5 - The Joseph Series: Prison Cell to Position of Trust (Genesis 39:20-23, Colossians 3:23-24 NIV)

HealingStrong Episode 5

Joseph's unwavering faith during his imprisonment demonstrates how God's favor can transform our most difficult circumstances. Even in prison, Joseph was given extraordinary responsibility and found success because the Lord was with him.

This quick episode covers:

• The jailer gave Joseph complete responsibility over all prisoners and operations
• God granted Joseph favor with the jailer, showing His presence even in dire situations
• Joseph's unjust imprisonment in the king's prison (rather than execution) was part of God's strategic plan
• Many people experience "prison moments" in their jobs, marriages, or health challenges
• Joseph's excellent work ethic reflected the principle of working "as for the Lord" described in Colossians
• Potiphar likely didn't believe his wife's accusations since he chose imprisonment over execution
• God's strategic positioning placed Joseph exactly where he needed to be for his future elevation

Speaker 1:

It said. But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison too and was kind to him by granting him favor with the jailer.

Speaker 2:

Well, hey there, my name is Cheryl and you are listening to Healing Strong's Around the Word. We are a group of friends sitting around a table who love God and we love digging deep into His Word. Each day on the podcast, you'll hear me reading a Bible passage and then we'll chat into His Word. Each day on the podcast, you'll hear me reading a Bible passage and then we'll chat about what we're learning from it. I'll be reading Genesis, chapter 39, verses 20 through 23,. And from Colossians 3, verses 23 through 24, all from the NIV version of the Bible. So join us Around the Word. Genesis 39, 20-23.

Speaker 2:

Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him. He showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison and he was made responsible for all that was done there. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did. And now Colossians 3, 23 through 24. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord, christ, you are serving. That was our Bible reading for today, so now let's listen in on what Angie, susie Maren and myself are finding in God's Word the jailer gives everything over to Joseph, so that all the prisoners were.

Speaker 1:

He was responsible for everything. The chief jailer had no worries because Joseph took care of everything.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, who gets to do that at prison? I mean, I've heard of prisoners having good behavior, so they get to do a few more things.

Speaker 1:

Because it said but the Lord was with Joseph in the prison too and was kind to him by granting him favor with the jailer.

Speaker 3:

And we need to pray for the Lord's favor, don't we? I mean no matter where. I think about the jail, like not everyone goes to jail, but many people feel like their job is a jail, their marriage is a jail. There's just things in their life that they are feeling like, that they're not happy, yeah, their cancer. Here is Joseph just walking with the Lord, no matter what. I just think that his story as we walk through this, from Potiphar's home now into prison and just seeing these lessons of Joseph's life and we know what happens in the end.

Speaker 2:

I think it's neat neat too that potiphar could have thrown. Well, first of all he could have killed him. I mean, these were pretty strong accusations that he made, um, the wife made against joseph. So you would think, you know, a slave would have just been killed. But no, he puts him in the prison of the Pharaoh's officials. So this makes it sound like there's a different prison for other people. And can't you just see the Lord's hand? Obviously the Lord's favor was on him, but his direction and guidance too. Just like getting sold to Potiphar, potiphar happens to buy him out of all the slaves he could have bought. He gets put in this prison which, later on we'll see, has some divine reasons and purposes in his path.

Speaker 1:

I don't think Potiphar believed his wife, because if he had believed that it really happened he would have killed him. But Potiphar had watched Joseph carry on his business in his household and live his life living under the principles described clearly in this book. Then we do have that favor, we walk in favor and other people see it, and then we've got other good things come to us because of that life we've lived.

Speaker 2:

And that was the end of our discussion. Don't you just love reading and learning about Joseph and his character? My goodness, he was thrown so many bad things early on in life, and look what God did through him, and we're gonna see later on how God was preparing him.
