HealingStrong's Around the Word

Episode 16 - The Joseph Series: Joseph's Tears (Genesis 45 NIV)

HealingStrong Episode 16

Genesis 45 reveals the heart of God's redemption story as Joseph finally discloses his identity to his brothers who once betrayed him. This powerful narrative parallels Christ's forgiveness and redemption, showing how God transforms human betrayal into divine purpose to restore His people.

This quick episode covers:

• Joseph's emotional revelation to his brothers demonstrates vulnerability and forgiveness
• Joseph recognizes God's sovereign plan in his suffering: "It was not you who sent me here, but God"
• His forgiveness mirrors Christ's words on the cross: "Forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing"
• Joseph provides abundantly for his family just as Jesus intercedes for believers before the Father
• The instructions "don't quarrel on the way" remind us to leave blame behind and focus on redemption
• Jacob's initial disbelief followed by revival parallels our journey of faith in God's promises
• The story demonstrates how God used Joseph to preserve Israel, ultimately bringing forth Jesus

Speaker 1:

All we're to do is accept the gift of redemption and forgiveness, and that's what Joseph was saying here to these brothers Just you're forgiven.

Speaker 2:

Hi there, my name is Cheryl and you're listening to Healing Strong's Around the Word. We're friends sitting around the table who love the Lord and we love digging deep into His Word. Each day in the podcast you'll hear me reading from a Bible passage and then we'll chat about what we're learning from it. I'll be reading Genesis chapter 45 today from the NIV version of the Bible. So join us around the Word. Genesis, chapter 45.

Speaker 2:

Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all his attendants and he cried out have everyone leave my presence. So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers and he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him and Pharaoh's household heard about it. Joseph said to his brothers I am Joseph, is my father still living? But his brothers were not able to answer him because they were terrified at his presence. Then Joseph said to his brothers come close to me. When they had done so, he said I am your brother, joseph, the one you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. Now hurry back to my father and say to him this is what your son, joseph says God has made me Lord of all Egypt. Come down to me, don't delay. You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me. Verse 2. You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that it is really I who am speaking to you. Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt and about everything you have seen, and bring my father down here quickly. Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping, and he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him.

Speaker 2:

When the news reached Pharaoh's palace that Joseph's brothers had come, pharaoh and all his officials were pleased. Pharaoh said to Joseph Tell your brothers, do this, load your animals and return to the land of Canaan and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you can enjoy the fat of the land. You are also directed to tell them do this take some carts from Egypt for your children and your wives and get your father and come. So the sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them carts, as Pharaoh had commanded, and he also gave them provisions for their journey. To each of them he gave new clothing, but to Benjamin he gave 300 shekels of silver and five sets of clothes. And this is what he sent to his father ten donkeys loaded with the best things of Egypt and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other provisions for his journey. Then he sent his brothers away and as they were leaving he said to them Don't quarrel on the way.

Speaker 2:

So they went up out of Egypt and came to their father Jacob, in the land of Canaan. They told him Joseph is still alive. In fact he is ruler of all Egypt. Jacob was stunned. He did not believe them. But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them and when they saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father, jacob, revived and Israel said I'm convinced my son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die. That was our Bible reading passage for today. So now let's listen in on what Susie Angie Maren and myself are learning around the word this is such a good story, and you know why it's such a good story.

Speaker 1:

This is the story, the story of redemption, the story of restoring the children to the Father, children to the father. And Joseph said come, family, come, bring all that you have and live in the land of Goshen. The very best there is. Because I've interceded and I've gone to the king and I've asked the king for this for you, and he will grant it to you because I am his favored one and I have asked it and he has granted it. And that's what we're doing. We're allowed to go to the king and be given the very best, because Jesus has interceded for us. He's our Joseph in a way, and he's interceded for us. He's our Joseph, in a way, and he's interceded and asked the Father for the best and the Father has granted it, and it's all we have to do is believe it and walk in it.

Speaker 3:

That's the little extra. That's the little extra that people need to walk away with. Is that it's about God's redemption, it's about the nation of Israel. It's about what God is doing through the nation of Israel to redeem the rest of us. That is it.

Speaker 4:

These are the things that Joseph did, that Jesus also did. Let's parallel them as we go through here. Joseph, then he wept aloud. His sobs could be heard throughout the palace and the news was quickly carried to Pharaoh's palace. He wept because of the sin.

Speaker 1:

And then he said forgive them. I forgive you because you didn't know what you were doing. What did Jesus say on the cross? Forgive them, father. They don't know what you were doing. What did Jesus say on the cross? Forgive them, father. They don't know what they're doing.

Speaker 4:

He said I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. But don't be angry with yourselves. God tells us that all the time. Don't be angry with yourselves. And then he goes on to say that you don't be angry with yourselves, that you did this to me, for God did it, god. God, let Jesus go through that for us.

Speaker 1:

All we're to do is accept the gift of redemption and forgiveness, and that's what Joseph was saying here to these brothers Just, you're forgiven and you're going to have the best at the king's table.

Speaker 4:

So Joseph tells them to hurry return home, and then I love the words. As they're leaving, he says don't quarrel among yourselves.

Speaker 3:

If we were to all be found out and walking away, I can just imagine just the story, the quarreling that could happen. You know the temptation to draw up Well, you're the one who did this and you're the one who did that, and you're the one that exchanged the money, and, ruben, you ran away. You weren't even there. So we had to make a decision, and you know all this stuff. But Joseph's so beautiful and our Lord does that for us. Don't quarrel, don't look back. God had a plan in this, and what the enemy meant for harm, god meant for good and is using it for good, to restore the nation of Israel, which ultimately, jesus comes from. So it's just so beautiful.

Speaker 2:

Didn't you guys just love listening to the discussion today? Because it's the heart of the story. It's the best part of the story. It's Joseph getting back with his brothers, it's redemption and we love it. Anyway, thank you so much for joining us for Healing Strong's Around the Word podcast.
