HealingStrong's Around the Word

Episode 21 - The Joseph Series: Joseph's Legacy (Genesis 50:22-26, Exodus 13:19, Romans 6:23, John 3:16 NIV)

HealingStrong Episode 21

We conclude our study of Joseph's life by examining his final request to have his bones carried to the Promised Land—a powerful testament of faith that waited 400 years for fulfillment.

This quick episode covers:

• Joseph died at 110 years old but never lost sight of God's promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
• His request to carry his bones to Canaan demonstrated faith that transcended his lifetime
• Moses faithfully fulfilled Joseph's request during the Exodus (Exodus 13:19)
• Joseph's life teaches us about forgiveness, remembering who God is, and waiting patiently
• Like a seed planted in darkness, our waiting seasons are when God is often most at work
• Joseph's story parallels Jesus' redemption story—both used what was intended for harm to bring salvation
• God's promises are true and accessible, but we must know them through studying His Word
• Faith requires patience, diligence and endurance during seasons of waiting

If you've made a profession of faith or accepted Christ as your Savior, we'd love to hear from you at prayerrequest@healingstrong.org.

Speaker 1:

there's just so many lessons that we can take away from the story of Joseph. That is just so encouraging as we walk out our own life in Christ, knowing that his promises are true, that he is faithful and that he has this plan and a purpose for us in all things.

Speaker 2:

Hey, my name is Cheryl and you're listening to Healing Strong's Around the Word. We're friends sitting around the table who love the Lord and love digging deep into His Word. Each day you'll hear me read a Bible passage and then we'll chat about what we're learning from it. Today I'm reading from Genesis, chapter 50, verses 22 through 26. We'll read from Exodus 13, 19,. Romans 6, 23. That's a pretty popular verse and, of course, one of the most popular verses, john 3, 16. All of these from the NIV version of the Bible. So join us today around the word. Genesis, chapter 50, verses 22 through 26.

Speaker 2:

Joseph stayed in Egypt along with all his father's family. He lived 110 years and saw the third generation of Ephraim's children. Also, the children of Maker, son of Manasseh, were placed at birth on Joseph's knees. Then Joseph said to his brothers I'm about to die, but God will surely come to your aid and take you up to this land, to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, isaac and Jacob. And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said God will surely come to your aid and then you must carry my bones up from this place. So Joseph died at the age of 110, and after they embalmed him. He was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Speaker 2:

And now Exodus, chapter 13, verse 19. Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place. And now Romans 6, verse 23,. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord. And now a verse that many of you know John, chapter 3, verse 16. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. That was our Bible reading today. So now let's listen in on what Susie, angie Maren and I are saying about what we see around the word. Today is our last day with Joseph, so I want to put this question out to all of us what have you learned from the story of Joseph? Forgiveness.

Speaker 3:

He forgave his brothers. He knew God used it for good to remember who His God is. It's important for us to remember, always point back to God. Don't worry about what people do around you. Be forgiving of them, because we're all broken and we all sin, but God provides and he is everything we need.

Speaker 2:

For me it's just encouragement about waiting on God. You may not know what God is doing. In those dark times You're almost like a little seed that's been planted, it's covered in soil and you have, and it's very dark and scary. You just don't know what's going on. But that's when God's really at work and he's growing you as that seed and one day you will bloom where you're planted. So for me, I see the example of someone that just looked to God in all circumstances, good and bad, and God gave him much favor too, and people around him were blessed because he was obedient to God and put God first in everything.

Speaker 4:

And God keeps his promises. He keeps his promises to us and his word is full of their thousands of promises that he has made to us. But we cannot take advantage of them if we do not know them. So it's a call to be in study, to learn more, to be in His Word and find out for ourselves what he has promised. So I say to myself, angie, what has God promised you? And so if my life, when I look around and my reality, doesn't look like what he's promised me or what I've read in the Scripture, then just know that I am in the waiting. And during that waiting I have to be patient and diligent and endure, like Joseph. But those promises will come to pass.

Speaker 1:

I think for me it's just that we're all on this pilgrimage like Jacob talks about, and to even look at Joseph's life and how it all ended up that you know it was all. God used his life for so many good things to save the nation of Israel. But you know, we learn a great deal about waiting. We learn a great deal about believing the promises of God. We learn a great deal about believing the promises of God. We learn a great deal about trusting God, not turning your back on Him. There's just so many lessons that we can take away from the story of Joseph. That is just so encouraging as we walk out our own life in Christ, knowing that His promises are true, that he is faithful and that he has this plan and a purpose for us.

Speaker 2:

In all things, joseph's story is a great example of Jesus and what he's done for us. We don't want to ever end a Healing Strong Bible study without telling you about the best news out there, and that's that Jesus is our risen Savior. He died for your sins and mine. Romans 6.23 says that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord. And each of us is a sinner, but God made a way for us to reconnect us with the Heavenly Father, and that's through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for our sins. His blood that he bled for you and for me is the price that he paid for us.

Speaker 1:

There's a verse that says in Romans. It says, for you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the spirit of sonship, and by him we cry, Abba, father.

Speaker 4:

Romans, chapter 10, verses 9 and 10, promises that if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. So if you make this decision and you believe this in your heart, tell somebody, share it with somebody else, and we would love for you to share it with us. We'd like the opportunity to encourage you in your continued walk of faith.

Speaker 3:

So we have an email that you could send us a little message. We have a prayer team at Healing Strong, and so we would love to hear if you've made a profession of faith, if you've accepted Christ as your Savior, and we're at prayerrequestathealingstrongorg.

Speaker 2:

And if you are at that point where you know that you need Jesus in your heart, that you are a sinner, please say this prayer along with me Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. I believe you died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead. I trust you as my Lord and Savior. Please help me daily to surrender to your will In Jesus' name, amen.

Speaker 4:

Amen, amen Praise God.
