In this episode, we explore how the heart drifts toward compromise by examining Exodus 20 alongside Daniel 1, revealing how a people called to exclusive allegiance slowly replace the living God with “little g” gods—good things like work, family, or comfort—that take first place and lead to exile.

Viewing the first commandment through the lens of rescue reframes obedience as a grateful response rather than duty, illustrated by Babylon’s siege and the desecration of temple treasures. Daniel and his friends model quiet resolve and firm boundaries amid pressure, challenging us to confront our own misplaced loves. We offer practical steps for a heart audit to identify idols, uncover fears, and reorder love through fasting, Scripture, Sabbath rhythms, and supportive friendships. This journey isn’t about shame but freedom—putting God first steadies life, fostering courage and lasting joy.

Setting The Spiritual Focus

SPEAKER_02

For me, most of the time when I find myself um in a taking a wrong path is because my focus is off of him and being his and searching for something else that's in this world. And that's an idol. And he tells us if you're mine and I'm gonna give all these great things to you, you're gonna have to stay with me.

Reading Exodus And Daniel

HealingStrong Mission Story

Linking Commandments To Exile

SPEAKER_01

Well, hi there. My name's Cheryl, and you are listening to Healing Strong's Around the Word. We are a group of friends sitting around the table that love God's word and we love digging deep into it. So each day you're gonna hear me reading a Bible passage, and then you're gonna hear us discussing it, and we hope you feel like you are at the table too. Today we are actually jumping into the book of Daniel, but we're doing a little history too, and we're starting with Exodus chapter 20, verses 1 through 4. Then we'll go to Daniel chapter 1, verses 1 through 2. So join us around the Word. Exodus 20, verses 1 through 4. And God spoke all these words. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above, or on the earth beneath, or in the waters below. And now Daniel chapter 1, verses 1 through 2. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his God in Babylonia and put in the treasure house of his God. And that was the reading of God's word for today. It was setting the stage for our story of our heroes. Before we listen in on what Angie, Marin, and I discovered around the word today, I just want to share a little bit about who we are. That's Healing Strong, in case you're new here. Healing Strong's a community-supported nonprofit. Our mission is to connect, support, and educate individuals facing cancer and other diseases through strategies that help rebuild the body, renew the soul, and refresh the spirit. We get messages all the time from people who've been encouraged by our mission. One that stood out came from Gerard and Michelle, a couple who've been part of the Healing Strong community. In fact, here's what Gerard had to say. I want to personally thank you for the impact Healing Strong has had on my life and my family. It has truly given us a new perspective on healing and God's purpose. My wife and I feel so encouraged, and for the first time in a long time, we are confident that we are on the path God has prepared for us. I love it when people are encouraged. Anyway, it's time we get back to the table and around the word. So you have to know a little bit about what God said to them early on, back with the Ten Commandments, which we all know, and then where we are today in the story. What did you guys see in that passage in Exodus?

SPEAKER_02

The 20th chapter begins by, I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. So the children of Israel, the man named Israel, had been in slavery for over 400 years, and he had brought them out through his servant Moses into the promised land.

SPEAKER_00

God saying, I am your God, I'm the one who brought you out of Egypt. You shall have no other idols. All these places have other gods that they bow down to. And he's telling them, I have brought you out of Egypt. You are to have no other gods.

Modern Idols And Self-Examination

SPEAKER_02

I think one of the things that we're seeing here too is that he he tells us all these great things. You know, I've called you, you're mine, I've summoned you, I am your God. But because of that, you know, he's going to do great things for us, but we've got to do our part. There, we have responsibility. He said, When when I'm your God, you should not have any other idols. You should not make any other gods. You should not worship other things. You should not be devoted to other things. And so usually, uh well, for me, most of the time when I find myself um in a taking a wrong path is because my focus is off of him and being his and searching for something else that's in this world. And that's an idol. And he tells us, if you're mine and I'm gonna give all these great things to you, you're gonna have to stay with me and not get off into the other um, the worldly things that we we often make idols, our jobs or our uh our family can be an idol.

SPEAKER_01

They God told them from the get-go, you're not gonna have any more gods before me. But as time got on and they kind of got a little further and further away from their their faith, they started allowing idols in. Distractions. They had distractions and they start little, small little things that they said, this is not a big deal here, this is not a big deal here. And they started doing it until finally they're putting up these poles, a sharehold poles, to Baal and other gods. And that's where we kind of entered the story now is that because they allowed all these idols in, God allowed them to be taken away from their homeland. They had an invading army come in and take them away. Right. And so that's where we see uh Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They were just teenagers that um were living in a society that had just kind of gone amok, had turned away from God, and then what happens? An invading army comes in and takes them away.

SPEAKER_02

When you stay constant, when you stay reminded that he is my God and I'm gonna follow in his path, you turn out like these four. When you get distracted and you start bringing in other idols, idols in your life to other little gods, you end up like the rest of the people as a slave.

SPEAKER_01

And that's why he's saying he draws us back. I am your God, Marin. I am your God, Cheryl, I am your God, Angie. You are mine.

SPEAKER_02

Um looking at this, the last sentence of in Daniel chapter one, verse one. Well, I guess this is verse two now. This phrase keeps jumping out at me. These he carried off to the temple of his God. And I was thinking about what is the temple of my God? And it's a little g. You have to be careful to maintain the big G God as your forefront. And when you start to get these little G gods in your in your daily life, they can become a temple, and you're bringing things, you're bringing your time, you're bringing your energy, you're bringing your gifts to that temple of the little God.

Closing And Next Steps

SPEAKER_01

That's food for thought. Thinking about what could be an idol that you put in your life. I mean, just think about it right now. In your day-to-day life, is it a spouse, your kids? Is it a job? Is it fame, fortune? Is there something that you're putting in your life that you've elevated above God? Like it is the end-all be all. Honestly, I can say that I realized that I was making a job of mine an idol in my life, that my worth and everything was found in that job. And it wasn't until I was put in the fire that I realized uh that that could go away just like that. And it was a big wake-up call for me. So I do challenge you, listener, to just think about what's in your life that maybe you're putting ahead of God and then go to God and just talk to him about it. Because he's a loving God, but he also wants to be number one in your life. So I hope you'll take that to heart. Anyway, thank you so much for joining us for Healing Strongs Around the Word. Hope you like our podcast. Hope you click subscribe. Hope you tell your friends. And we'll see you next time as we actually start meeting Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in hearing about how awesome these young men were. So remember, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
