In this episode, we explore Daniel 1:9–21, where a teenager’s small, courageous request for ten days of vegetables and water—trusting obedience over argument—sets a revolutionary example of wisdom, integrity, and health amid pressures from both the king and the Lord.
We discuss how Daniel’s measured, faith-filled plan leads to visible strength, clear minds, and divine insight, modeling a holistic approach to resilience that integrates body, soul, and spirit. Reflecting on nutrition and courage, we highlight how small faithful steps yield outsized results, supported by a listener story from the HealingStrong community. This conversation offers practical guidance for anyone seeking wisdom and habits that hold under pressure—encouraging listeners to ask for a test, trust God’s outcome, and let the fruit of their faith shine.

SPEAKER_00It says in the NIV translation, he gave them knowledge and understanding of all kinds of things, literature and learning. Yes. That's how you get favor in your life, in every area of your life, is trusting him, knowing what his word says, first of all, and then walking in what his word says and trusting that it will carry you through.

Daniel’s Resolve And The Test
SPEAKER_01Well, hi there. My name's Cheryl, and you're listening to Healing Strongs Around the Word. We're so glad to have you join us. We are a group of friends that love God's Word, and we love sitting around a table and discussing it. It's pretty fun. And we hope that you are having a good time listening in and learning something from it. You're gonna hear me read a Bible passage, and then after that, we'll discuss it. Today's passage is from the book of Daniel, chapter 1, verses 9 through 21, all from the NIV version of the Bible. So join us around the Word. Daniel chapter 1, verses 9 through 21. Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel. But the official told Daniel, I am afraid of my Lord the King, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you. Daniel then said to the guard, whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Please test your servants for ten days. Give us nothing but vegetable seed and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see. So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days. At the end of the ten days, they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead. To these four young men, God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the king's service. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom. And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus. Before we listen in on what Angie, Marin, and I learned around the word today, I want to share a little about Healing Strong Jumpstart. It's an online event designed to help people kick off or jumpstart their healing journey with practical guidance, emotional support, and spiritual encouragement, all focused on holistic health for the body, soul, and spirit. I say all that just so you know what this is because we got a note from a participant of Healing Strong Jumpstart, and I just wanted to tell it to you today. This participant from Kentucky says, I have so appreciated the Jumpstart courses, and since then, the support group I have joined. Thank you for your tireless investment in educating, supporting, encouraging, and praying for all of us. May some of the blessing you offer others turn right around and bless you back. And I say right back at that person too. Absolutely. Let's get back to the table and around the word. What's going on here in this passage?
SPEAKER_02Daniel is asking for permission to not eat the food that they're serving him. Um, and what I really want to point out at the beginning is the official told Daniel that he was afraid of the Lord, the king. Um he was afraid to not give him the food. And what if he didn't do as well as the others?
SPEAKER_01Um, this has nothing to do with Daniel, by the way. It's all about this guy trying to save his skin. Right. If you think about it, he's really not looking out for Daniel, he's looking out for himself. Right. He was scared of the king. But did you notice also it said God caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel? Who does that sound like that we've studied in the past? Joseph. Joseph, just a little uh advertisement for you guys that we've written a study called uh Trusting God's Plan in the Waiting, Life Lessons from Joseph. So uh that's also on the Bible app and um very similar story to Joseph, where he was in prison and the um prison officials were were showing him favor. So that's probably because Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Benigo were all trusting God in all of this.
Favor, Reverence, And God’s Reward
SPEAKER_00I think one of the things that stands out to me is, you know, yesterday we were talking about the resolve of Daniel. And I think today we're seeing the confidence of Daniel. Daniel then spoke up and said, Give me 10 days. And that that takes courage to stand in the face of governmental officials or whatever, you know, this was the king's um uh staff tell him we're gonna have you're gonna have to eat this. And Daniel had enough confidence in what the Lord had told him that he said, Nope, you just give us 10 days and let us eat what we want to eat and and we will show you. The results will speak for themselves. That's confidence.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's absolutely trusting God with your situation because he knew he didn't want to compromise. He couldn't compromise. That would have been worse for him.
SPEAKER_00And you mentioned that the official feared the king. Well, Daniel feared his king as well, but it's the uh totally different kind of fear. It was the awesome reverence of God um that he experienced. And that that's the fear of God that we should have is just be in awe and reverence of him, honor what he says, do what he says, believe it, um, have confidence in it.
SPEAKER_02And then because he trusted God, big G God, as you call him, Angie, um, because he trusted God, then he with his mind, his body, and his spirit, God blessed him in his mind, his spirit and his body.
SPEAKER_01Yes, because it says God gave knowledge and understanding. This is just they were just eating the right food, but it was way more than food. They were feeding their souls.
SPEAKER_00It's it says in the NIV translation, he gave them knowledge and understanding of all kinds of things, literature and learning. Yes. That's how you get favor in your life, in every area of your life, is trusting him, knowing what his word says, first of all, and then walking in what his word says and trusting that it will carry you through.
Closing Encouragement And Support
SPEAKER_01Lest we forget these young teenagers were in a foreign land, not knowing the language, not knowing the culture, everything, and they are learning it quickly. Again, just like Joseph did in Egypt, too. But um, and what happened after the 10 days, by the way? What did King, the king himself, King Nebuchadnezzar, see about these young men? Ten times better than everybody else. I love numbers. We've talked about this in other podcasts. They asked for 10 days, yeah, and they're 10 times better. 10 times better. They got better day by day. Fruit that came from obedience, standing firm on what God had told them, and then seeing what God was going to do. They didn't know the outcome, but they trusted God in the middle of it. And 10 days later, they look better, they feel better, and they're smarter. And I love that one of the results of this was God gave them great knowledge and learning way beyond their years, which completely impressed the king, by the way. So I that's a lesson for us today. Trust God, stand on his word, follow him. Don't follow your own guts, follow God. Do what he tells you to do. You will not be disappointed. And thank you so much for joining us for Healing Strongs Around the Word. We hope that you are encouraged to read and explore God's word and find out more awesome stories like the one that we're reading about Daniel. By the way, I think it's really cool. They gave him 10 days, and God made him 10 times bigger, better than everybody else. Again, so cool. We serve a very, very amazing God who is our Heavenly Father and cares about the details, even stuff like that. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed today's episode and the story that we're learning about with Daniel.
